The fifth installment of our Ask Me Anything sessions begins with the inevitable volatility of the stock market as we urge investors to remain calm amidst recent US stock declines. Similarly, we unpack the historical resilience of stock markets and offer advice for dealing with market crashes before discussing why bonds are not the best strategy for boosting returns. We examine the proposed Alberta Pension Plan, the Rational Reminder Podcast guests whose impact still ripples across PWL, how to be a PWL-style advisor, and we revisit the DFA versus Vanguard debate. We also explain why spending rules aren't for us at PWL, the relationship between the amount to withdraw and the stock/bond allocation, and alternatives for short-term horizon investing, saving, and equities. To end, we hear feedback from Atti Ilmanen as well as reviews from listeners, but before all that, Mark McGrath shares bittersweet news! Stay tuned for an episode full of reflection, strategy, and insight. Key Points From This Episode: (0:01:13) The inevitability of market volatility and the historical resilience of stock markets. As Alberta Premier Danielle Smith takes over the federal job of policing the Alberta border with the US, and finds instant stardom on Fox News, she appears to be having the time of her life. Meanwhile, Alberta is booming and thousands of people are moving in from other parts of Canada every month. There are problems, but they look like the problems of growth. However, problems are problems. What does it look like from the Western Standard's legislative gallery in Edmonton? In tonight's episode of Hannaford, Nigel Hannaford asks newly appointed Western Standard legislative correspondent James Snell, himself a former political operative, how things look to him. Specifically, does Smith have a spending problem? Some people say she does. Will the Alberta Pension Plan ever happen? Do Albertans even want it? And how does it look like things are going? Snell, who once worked the Canadian Energy Centre, otherwise known as the 'War Room,' and staffed Energy Minister Brian Jean says Smith is doing ok, but has some definite ideas about spending and pensions. Check out what he has to say, above. Hannaford airs at seven o clock, MT. ORIGINAL AIR DATE: 06 Jan 2025, westernstandard.news

We don't know much about what an Alberta Pension Plan would actually look like. Up for debate: the amount Alberta could pull out of the national plan, whether or not contributions and draws would actually be higher or lower than with the CPP, who would influence where the funds would be invested, and how long the province's demographics would sustain an Alberta pension advantage. The Canada Pension Plan is a world-renowned fund that controls hundreds of billions of dollars earmarked for our retirements. Let's talk Alberta Pension Plan! And other things. The provincial government just released a report regarding what an Alberta Pension Plan would look like for Alberta. An AB pension plan is one of the things I want to see, an area of jurisdiction in which we have a constitutional right to, brought back to Alberta. You hear the word "sovereignty" a lot these days. That word means the ability to chart your own course. Alberta needs that as we are severely underrepresented in Ottawa and our values are not respected within Confederation.Sept 26, 2023

Is leaving the Canada Pension Plan in the best interest of all Albertans – and do most of us event want to leave the safety of the CPP for the unknown of a Provincial Pension Plan? We asked Bradley Lafortune, Executive Director of Public Interest Alberta for his take on the controversial numbers and the response he's getting from Albertans. Continuing the conversation on the proposed APP, or Alberta Pension Plan, we asked for the thoughts of Mount Royal University political scientist Lori Williams.
