If you're a motorcyclist living and riding in the U.S., Nick Haris works for you. Even more so if you're one of the more than 200,000 members of the American Motorcyclist Association, whose tagline is “Rights, Riding, and Racing.” Haris leads a team of six who comprise the AMA's government-relations department. Their job is to protect your rights as a motorcyclist in the halls of government. In the second of two interviews with Haris, “Driven to Ride” host Mark Long digs into significant issues facing 21st-century motorcyclists, such as autonomous vehicles. “If this technology cannot recognize and respond correctly to other road users,” states Haris, “and I don't care if it is a pedestrian, a bicyclist, a motorcycle, or another car, it shouldn't be allowed on public roads.”Haris sheds light on other hot-button subjects, like alternative energy, helmet laws, land management, and lane filtering. “I often say, ‘Ten percent of the world has an opinion about motorcycling. They're in favor of it—you and I. Ten percent have some reason they don't like it. And then, 80% don't care.' So, let's not move them into the, ‘I don't like motorcycling category,' by doing something stupid.'” Connect with Us:Website: www.driventoridepodcast.comInstagram: www.Instagram.com/driventoridepodcastFacebook: www.facebook.com/driventorideEmail:hello@driventoridepodcast.com
Motorcycling and politics don't mix, right? They do for Nick Haris. In college, the Washington state native was an economics major and worked at a motorcycle shop. Degree in hand, he applied for his dream job: a government-relations role at the American Motorcyclist Association. “It was just kind of a natural combination of that interest in politics and that love for motorcycling,” he says.In 2023, after more than 20 years on the job, Haris was made director of the AMA's Government Relations department. In the first of two interviews with “Driven to Ride” host Mark Long, Haris reiterates something we all know, that motorcyclists are a relatively small portion of the U.S. population. “If we look for reasons to divide ourselves,” he says, “we're not going to have a lot of success.”Spending long, memorable days in the saddle gives Haris time to think about the future of our country. “Reality is,” he says, “it's the city council that makes the decision or the board of supervisors that sets the zoning rule that really probably affects you more on a daily basis than anything that Congress is going to do. Day to day, it's the locals that you really need to get to know.” Good advice. Since 2006, CHARGE has served clients including Honda, Acura, NASCAR, the Los Angeles Dodgers, NBA Players Association, American Motorcyclist Association, and over fifty professional athletes in the NFL, NASCAR, and INDYCAR. He's also the author of Sponsorship Strategy and our guest this week on the On Brand podcast. About Ken Ungar Ken Ungar is a sponsorship marketing consultant, as well as an attorney with certifications including Player Contract Advisor from the NFL Players Association and Professional Certified Marketer from the American Marketing Association. He has published two books on marketing, including his most recent, Sponsorship Strategy: Practical Approaches to Powerful Sponsorships. Ungar has worked with marquis brands on sports sponsorships and endorsements, including Bridgestone-Firestone, Coca-Cola, Disney, General Motors, Honda, Microsoft, Nissan, Pepsi, Tag-Heuer, Toyota, Sirius-XM Satellite Radio, and more. Episode Highlights We don't talk about sponsorship strategy enough. Luckily Ken has a book for us to help remedy that. In Sponsorship Strategy, Ken wanted to provide tools and best practices for brands looking to grow through sponsorship. “You have to start at the customer demographic. Ask yourself, do you see your customers in the audience of XYZ event?” The biggest mistakes to avoid in sponsorship. Ken detailed some of the biggest traps in sponsorship strategy: Mismatch between sponsor and the audience. Paying so much for the sponsorship itself you don't have anything left to leverage the sponsorship through additional supporting promotion. Not starting with the end in mind—what will success look like? How will you measure that success? Personal branding for athletes. As a sponsorship consultant to numerous professional athletes, Ken shared how these brands are developed and cultivated. “Many athletes think that the only brand they have is their performance brand—what they do on the field. That's only part of it.” Ken shared how their work helps athletes develop their brand purpose. What brand has made Ken smile recently? “In full disclosure it's (client) Acura,” Ken shared, detailing their recent anime short film telling a story about racing. “I kept begging them to make a feature-length movie!” Always leave the audience wanting more! Leslie Porterfield is the fastest woman in the world, and that’s on a motorcycle! Let that sink in. She went 232.522 miles per hour on the Bonneville Salt Flats, and thus became a member of the very exclusive “Bonneville 200 MPH Club” and its first woman member. She has also been named Racing Female Rider of the Year by the American Motorcyclist Association. Leslie actually holds three land-speed records and she’s been profiled in Time Magazine and featured in a documentary entitled “Chasing Speed: Leslie Porterfield.” We first met at a Chicago International Motorcycle event a few years ago where she was doing a presentation, and I have to say I was really moved by her accomplishments. In this episode we discuss what first got her into motorcycles, when she started in racing, and how her parents felt about it. We also talk about her being featured in the documentary “Chasing Speed: Leslie Porterfield,” her work as an entrepreneur and business owner, recruiting racing sponsors, We go deep into the nuts-and-bolts (sorry) of land speed racing in general, and bike design and engineering for setting records, in particular. She talks frankly about a high-speed crash that did marked damage to both her and her bike, and her comeback, as well as being tapped to race in the machine that sadly Jessi Combs was killed in during a recent high speed run. She gives some great advice about battling stereotypes and biases, setting priorities once becoming the mother of twins, resilience, and evolving one’s career as life changes. She also talked about her philanthropic and humanitarian work via her involvement in Racers Who Care, and doing inspirational talks. Leslie demonstrates, and in this episode, deconstructs how we can all live a life in full.

A chance viewing of a short news story prompted Peter A. Cline to create a life-changing charity for veterans injured on the battlefield. VETMotorsports, Inc., provides wounded veterans struggling to re-assimilate to the civilian world the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with professional motorcycle and auto racing teams. The charity has helped more than 130 veterans since 2012. “I saw an opportunity after watching a TV short on BBC America about how injured warfighters were using motorsports to recover from battlefield injuries,” Cline said. “I asked myself why someone was not providing a ‘hands-on’ opportunity for veterans. From that point on, it was a matter of doing research and having some discussions with sponsors and friends to work out the details.” Cline, a former professional motorcycle racer, spends time attending and facilitating race experiences all across the U.S. during the racing season, while focusing on fundraising and outreach to strategic partners during the off season. Cline volunteers his time as executive director of VETMotorsports while working full-time as Traffic Safety Specialist at Motorcycle Ohio. “VETMotorsports has allowed me to take 12 plus years of relationships and create this thing where the sum of the parts make a huge difference to those veterans participating,” Cline said. “The program is about creating a culture where injured warfighters are welcome, where we can provide them an outlet that shows them their self-worth and hopefully creates an opportunity for them to succeed outside the program.” Cline, who lives in Upper Arlington, Ohio, was presented the 2015 Hazel Kolb Brighter Image Award from the American Motorcyclist Association for his contributions to the motorcycle racing community.
Bikers face the challenge of ethanol-blended fuels every time they pull into a gas station to fill up their tank. Two of the organizations that have weighed in on the ethanol-blended fuel debate are the Renewable Fuels Association and the American Motorcyclist Association. The organizations have publicly disagreed on how ethanol-blended fuel is sold in gas stations and exactly how much should be allowed into the marketplace. For the first time ever, representatives from both organizations come together to discuss, debate and clarify the topic of ethanol-blended fuels and more importantly, explain why their viewpoint makes the most motorcycle-sense. Peter terHorst and Rick Podliska represent the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Robert White represents the Renewable Fuels Association In this edition of Another Motorcycle Podcast we discuss; What are ethanol-blended fuels? How do they get to local gas stations? Which should be used in a motorcycle? Brandon Parrish of RiderSurance joins us for Part III of our three-part series on rider safety. Do you have adequate insurance protection if you go down? Does your company cover life flight? Do you know, for sure, that there are no exclusions in your policy for racing and riding motorcycles? Brandon is a racer's racer who has seen plenty of crashes and injuries. He found himself in the insurance business quite by accident, but now that he is in it, he is truly in it. RiderSurance is also now associated with the American Motorcyclist Association. Part I featured Chuck Koro of Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys. Part II starred Nick Ientasch and Scott Russell on how not to crash. Now, in Part III, we discuss the importance of the decisions we make before we race or ride motorcycles. GO HERE FOR THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER WEBSITE ==> http://www.lawabidingbiker.com PODCAST-Get ready for this episode as we dive right into the very heated topic of "motorcycle only checkpoints" (MOC's). We break it down for the law abiding biker community and whether or not this really affects you as a motorcycle rider. Should this be something of great or little concern and is it going to take place in you area? There is a lot of incorrect information on this issue and we get to the bottom of things here on the Law Abiding Biker Podcast. We bring it to you from a balanced perspective with nothing to gain or lose on the matter, unlike many others reporting on it. This is quite a discussion and you just need to listen in to get the whole scoop. The American Motorcycle Association has been at the forefront of the battle against motorcycle only checkpoints. Although they make some good arguments, they also say some things that I don't necessarily agree with. They say things like: "We hope to see laws enacted to end the discriminatory and harmful law enforcement practice of targeting motorcyclists for stops that do nothing to improve the safety of our roads." I dissent and believe the AMA is uneducated by blaming motorcycle only checkpoints on "law enforcement". If the American Motorcycle Association did proper homework they would understand that these sorts of programs are developed well outside law enforcement agencies power and are trickled down to them. In fact, I think it would be fair to say that an overwhelming majority of law enforcement officers that ride motorcycles off duty are totally against motorcycle only checkpoints. Don't get me wrong, I support the AMA, but at times they speak before they completely understand certain matters and make statements like this. We agree that motorcycle only checkpoints do nothing to improve the safety of our roads, however just don't jump to conclusions and blame it on law enforcement. Properly blame it on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), who comes up with some of these ridiculous traffic safety programs and then gives out money to have it carried out by many that don't even believe in it. The NHTSA does have many good traffic safety programs that are very successful, but I believe they need to terminate motorcycle only checkpoints and put our tax money to better use. For the most part I agree with the American Motorcycle Associations stance and that motorcycle only checkpoints should not occur. However, the AMA has put a lot of hype on the issue to get more members. They are constantly running FaceBook and other social media ads referencing "stop motorcycle only checkpoints" and "sign up now". Again, I am totally against motorcycle only checkpoints & they are discriminatory, but don't use it to scare people and run a ton of paid FaceBook ads to try to get more members. Here is an article directly from the AMA about what has been spent, however you must keep it in perspective to the extremely large budget and what NHTSA funds. Again, I don't believe a penny of our tax money should be spent on this program, but please don't make it look worse than it is. The fact of the matter and in the scheme of the overall NHTSA budget, very little money has actually went into conducting motorcycle only checkpoints since 2007. And I do believe that is because the AMA has been right in their face about the matter, which is awesome. Hopefully the NHTSA will see the writing on the wall and stop motorcycle only checkpoints for good. In fact, Alaska, Idaho, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon, Rhode Island, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming -- have prohibited checkpoints by statute and/or judicial action. Four states have since outlawed the practice, which are California, Missouri, North Carolina, Virginia. Illinois and New Hampshire have prohibited the use of federal dollars for MOC's. The point is to make sure you know your facts about motorcycle only checkpoints and look at things from an unbiased position. Then you can form an educated position and make an informed decision. We strongly encourage you to oppose motorcycle only checkpoints and you can help doing so by signing the AMA's petition against them. OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER PODCAST ==> http://www.lawabidingbiker.com PODCAST-In this episode we cut through all the smoke, mirrors, politics, and money involved with the rising controversy about whether or not E15 ethanol fuel, also called renewable fuel, is safe to be used in motorcycles, ATV's, and small engines. We have a very heated discussion and really break it down on this biker podcast episode for all the bikers/motorcyclists out there, who have a right to know whether E15 fuel is safe to use. Biker/motorcyclists should know that if you use E15 in your motorcycle it will likely VOID YOUR WARRANTY. Read your motorcycle owner's manual and paperwork, as it likely states in there somewhere that using E15 fuel will void your motorcycle's warranty. It is in the Harley Davidson manual for certain, so beware. Also know that the EPA is pushing E15 fuel and you may get confused and use the fuel in your motorcycle by mistake from blender pumps that are already in service around the country. Be very cautious when fueling your motorcycle and read the labels. You really must listen to this podcast episode to get all the details! Alcohol in E15 fuel is mainly made from corn and contains less combustible energy than gasoline. E15 fuel first became available at gas stations in 2013. E15 is currently offered in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. It is thought, but not proved, to be the cause of some engine failures that motorcyclists have experienced and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) can not prove otherwise at this point. In fact, the EPA has approved E15 use only in 2001-and-newer light-duty vehicles, which include cars, light-duty trucks and medium-duty passenger vehicles. The EPA has not approved its use in any motorcycles or ATVs. The EPA said, "Nearly all gasoline sold in the U.S. is now E10," which is fuel with up to 10 percent ethanol. E15 is a fuel blend of 15 percent ethanol and 85 percent gasoline. Accidental use of E15 by bikers/motorcyclists has led in some cases to void motorcycle warranties and in some extreme cases motorcycle engine failure. The federal Renewable Fuel Standards program, which the EPA administers, requires that 18.15 billion gallons of renewable fuels such as ethanol be blended into gasoline and diesel fuel in 2014. The standards ensure that transportation fuel sold in the United States contains a minimum volume of renewable fuel as required by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. Federal law also gives the EPA administrator flexibility to reduce the required volume of renewable fuels in any year. EPA Administrator Regina "Gina" McCarthy took advantage of that flexibility by recognizing the "blend wall" and proposed reducing the amount of renewable fuels to be blended in 2014 from 18.15 billion gallons to a proposed range of 15.0 to 15.52 billion gallons, with a recommendation of 15.21 billion gallons. On March 4, 2013, President Barack Obama nominated Regina "Gina" McCarthy to replace Lisa Jackson as head of the EPA. Production of renewable fuels has been growing rapidly in recent years. However, at the same time, advances in vehicle fuel economy and other economic factors have pushed gasoline consumption far lower than what was expected when Congress passed the Renewable Fuel Standard in 2007. As a result, we are now at the 'E10 blend wall,' the point at which the E10 fuel pool is saturated with ethanol." American Motorcycle Association (AMA) Vice President for Government Relations Wayne Allard says, "We're glad to see that the EPA is taking this action today, though this is not a long-term solution for motorcyclists who worry that the use of E15 fuel could damage their engines and void their warranties," The American Motorcyclist Association remains committed to AMA members-and all motorcyclists-as we continue to support legislation that prohibits E15 fuel." Video-Secret, Dirty Cost of Obama's Green Power Push: There is some good happening in all this. President Obama has signed into law recently a provision to stop the future distribution of E15 fuels across the U.S. It prohibits the use of grant money by the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) to purchase and install ethanol blender pumps to dispense E15 at retail gas stations. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack had intended to use REAP funding to install a further 10,000 blender pumps in the U.S. by 2016. The AMA said that it considers this farm-bill provision a major victory for the owners and riders of the estimated 22 million motorcycles and ATVs currently in operation in the U.S. Since 2011, the AMA has campaigned to prevent the distribution of E15 fuels, seeking independent scientific tests on their effect on motorcycle and all-terrain vehicle engines and fuel systems. After the introduction of E15 into the marketplace, the AMA fought its spread, because of concerns about people using the fuel by mistake from blender pumps. “It is gratifying to see our efforts on behalf of U.S. motorcyclists and ATV riders achieve this level of success,” said Wayne Allard, AMA vice president for government relations. “We plan to continue to monitor the E15 issue, including the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal to reduce the 2014 requirements under its Renewable Fuel Standard.” The bottom line," said Allard, "is that this decision certainly slows the unnecessary rush on bringing E15 fuels to market for at least the next year, but it doesn't address the central issue that real-world motorcyclists face, and that is that no motorcycle currently on the road is approved for E15 use, and the risk of inadvertent misfueling is tremendous once it is available at the pump. The below video is of a Science Committee Hearing: "Strengthening Transparency and Accountability within the Environmental Protection Agency". In this video Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner questions Gina McCarthy about E15 fuel and the lack of testing that has been done in regards to its use in motorcycle motors. Needless to say, Gina McCarthy looks like a babbling idiot and has no real answers, which should make you even more concerned about the underlying reasons the EPA is trying to push E15 fuel on the motorcycling community.
