Brittany Haas is widely regarded as one of the most influential fiddlers of her generation. In this wide-ranging conversation you'll be hearing about her early career, touring with Darol Anger at age 14, the bands Croooked Still, Hawktail and Punch Brothers with Chris Thile. She reflected on the challenges and thrill of a touring life, the Nashville scene, her teaching through Artistworks, and dynamics of being a woman in Bluegrass. We talked about mentors Bruce Molsky and Tony Trishka, her time at Princeton studying Evolutionary Biology, and the need for self-care and boundaries. We are featuring music from several of her albums, including her recent projects with sister Natalie and the Swedish musician Lena Jonsson. This week I'm joined by bluegrass legend Bryan Sutton for a very special episode to benefit the IBMA Trust Fund and help people suffering the devastation of Hurricane Helene. In the run up to recording the episode we asked for questions for Bryan for Bluegrass Jam Along listeners - in this interview you'll hear me put those questions to him. We talk about growing up in Asheville and how important that community was to Bryan's musical development; about his relationship with Doc Watson and the time he got to spend with him; about how he goes about learning complex music and his thoughts on practice; why learning more than one instrument is a good thing...and his admiration for Metallica's James Hetfield. We cover a lot of ground!Everyone who asked a question donated to our GoFundMe fundraiser, which remains open after the episode goes out. If you're able to, please do consider donating whatever you can. As you'll hear from Bryan in the interview, there are people in desperate need of help as they rebuild their homes, lives and communities.Having grown up in Asheville, one of the areas hit hardest by the hurricane, Bryan knows just how important community is at times like this. The relief effort will take months or, in some cases, over a year, so every penny donated will be incredibly important to the ongoing efforts. All the proceeds from this episode will go to the IBMA Trust Fund so please do donate what you can via the GoFundMe campaign. If you can't donate, or have already donated to other fundraisers, please do share this episode with anyone you think would enjoy it and help spread the word. Thanks to the team at IBMA for all their help putting this together and getting the word out and thanks to the team at ArtistWorks for an incredibly generous donation to get things moving. Thank you to everyone who submitted a question and everyone who's donated already (and thanks in advance to those of you who donate after hearing this!)Here's the link again - https://www.gofundme.com/f/bluegrass-jam-along-helene-fundraiserAnd thanks, of course, to Bryan for taking part in this very special episode of Bluegrass Jam Along.Enjoy the interview and happy picking,MattSend a message to Bluegrass Jam Along! This week's episode is a selection of interviews I carried out at IBMA World of Bluegrass in Raleigh, North Carolina last week.It was the last IBMA in Raleigh before the event moves to Chattanooga in 2025, and was an amazing week, full of great conversations, events, music, instruments, picking and people. I had a fantastic time and can't tell you how much it means to me to feel so welcomed by the bluegrass and string band community. But it was also a devastating week for the people of western North Carolina and East Tennessee, as hurricane Helene devastated the area. In Raleigh we were lucky to escape with some rain and minor delays to the street festival - others were nowhere near so lucky. There's a desperate need for help and resources in the area so, if you'd like to donate something (however small), there's a list here of places you can go to do that. OK, on with the interviews. In this episode you'll hear from:IBMA executive director Ken White, on IBMA WOB's move to Chattanooga next yearChristopher Howard-Williams from IBMA, EBMA and Bluegrass in La Roche, on the international bluegrass scene and some of the challenges it facesPatricia Butler, co-founder of ArtistWorks, on receiving a Distinguished Achievement AwardSteve Nall (Nully) of Collings Guitars, on why their new Hill Country series is a radical departure for Collings and why bringing them to IBMA is so valuable in terms of feedbackBrenna MacMillan, on her brand new record Dear Life, and finding community amongst her fellow musiciansChris Eaton, UK dobro player, on coming to IBMA for the very first timeThanks to everyone I met out in Raleigh. Back next week with another IBMA interview - in the meantime have a great week and happy picking.MattSend a message to Bluegrass Jam Along! (Don't forget to include your name so I know who you are!) The word “developer” has always been evolving, from assembly to systems, operations, and beyond. The term “Developer Relations” has traditionally meant we're engaging with people who consider themselves full-time professional developers. However, over the past few years, the term “developer” has expanded to encompass more than this professional developer persona. These days, some DevRel teams advocate for, evangelize to, and create communities for SREs, Enterprise Architects, students, or decision-makers in early-stage startups, in addition to low-code or citizen developers. While these people may fall outside of the traditional developer persona, many DevRel teams are looking to support these people who are using our technology for one-off solutions to their problems. We're interested in learning more about whether this changes the scope of DevRel, and if so, how. About the San Francisco Mime Troupe The mission of the San Francisco Mime Troupe is to create and produce theater that presents a working-class analysis of the events that shape our society, that exposes social and economic injustice, that demands revolutionary change on behalf of working people, and to present this analysis before the broadest possible audience with artistry and humor. The collective of the San Francisco Mime Troupe exists not only to create this activist art but also to embody our ideals of combating the fragmentation of the working class: we are a democratically run, multi-ethnic, multi-generational, multi-cultural, gender-balanced theater of social justice that by its very existence sustains a vision of community governance of, by, and for the people. Music is beyond experiencing what's on the surface, beyond what is written, it is beyond hearing alone. When you are able to embody music to who you really are is art itself, being able to experience it with personal insights and experiences makes music even more meaningful and authentic. There are so many tools and theories out there to help you connect with music, but these tools and theories can not really connect you in depth with what the music is all about. But there is also a wonderful way to share your art and music with others through certain platforms where you can be genuinely listened to. In today's episode, we are joined by Owen Grover. He is the CEO of TrueFire Studios, one of the biggest music education brands out there, with 4 main brands: Artistworks.com: an online music platform focused on making learning affordable and easy. The platform has over 50k lessons, 35+ teachers, and has taught tens of thousands of students in 80+ countries. TrueFire: a digital guitar lessons platform that has collaborated with 300+ top artists and educators, and has over 40k video lessons available. FaderPro: an online music education platform focused on electronic dance music that has teamed up with big names like Nicky Romero. JamPlay: a leading resource for learning to play the guitar and bass online that has over 500k customers and 300k followers across social media.Owen also helped produce the Concert for Sandy Relief at Madison Square Garden, which raised over $55 million for victims of Hurricane Sandy. 063: Mike BlockGood morning! This is Play It Like It’s Music. I’m Trevor, thanks for listening. On Wednesday, November 4th of 2020, MORE THAN EVER Music is not content, it’s connection.I’m recording this on Tuesday afternoon, so the voice you’re listening to right now is still on the previous side of whatever corner has been turned by the time you’re hearing this. So you know something I don’t. Or maybe you don’t. But at least things are moving somewhere.Today we have the one and only Mike Block on the show. He’s a good friend, a world renowned cellist and teacher and also a songwriter and bandleader who puts out an astonishing amount of records. His work ethic just won't quit. He's also Yo Yo Ma's go-to arranger, a role which has developed in the wake of his long association with the Silk Road ensemble. We get into that. He’s got a new album out this month called The Edge Of The Atmosphere and you can find links to it (and all of his music) in the shownotes [below].Yes that’s right, we are doing a two week run of great cellists with great new albums. Last week’s interview with Nesrine was a real joy, and this one with Mike is another - if you’re into cellists. He’s truly industrious: In 2010 he founded the Mike Block String Camp. Mike is also the founding Director of Silkroad’s Global Musician Workshop (GMW), designed to foster a community of globally minded musicians. He teaches hundreds of cello students online through his Multi-Style Cello School at ArtistWorks.com, he’s an Associate Professor at the Berklee College of Music, and in 2018 also joined the faculty of New England Conservatory through the Contemporary Improvisation program. BUT that’s not all. As an innovator, Mike is among the first wave of cellists to adopt a strap in order to stand and move while playing. He patented an original design, The Block Strap, and then became the first standing cellist to perform at Carnegie Hall. The NY Times characterized the performance as, "Breathless ... Half dance, half dare." So yeah, he’s a complete badass. But also a humble and generous dude with a great heart. Today on the podcast I speak with Pianist, techie, author, teacher and entrepreneur Hugh Sung, who has been described as a modern day “renaissance man”. As a pianist, Hugh served on the faculty of The Curtis Institute of Music for 19 years and has recorded over a dozen albums and collaborated with some of the world's leading musicians and orchestras. As a techie, he pioneered the use of digital sheet music and co-founded AirTurn, a company that makes wireless pedals for turning iPad and computer pages hands free. Hugh leverages his love of technology to teach hundreds of students around the world through his Online Popular Piano School at ArtistWorks, and is also the host of a popular weekly podcast, “A Musical Life”, a show where he shares stories about making music and the things that move our souls. Through his online Mastermind group at “A Musical Life Mastermind”, Hugh empowers musicians to gain entrepreneurial skills to help them achieve their musical and financial dreams. In his free time, Hugh loves to cook and is currently obsessed with the joy of making Indian flatbreads. We discuss Hugh's successful podcast and mastermind, his recent interview with none other than the famous cellist Yo-yo ma, being a digital paperless musician, the AirTurn, online teaching, and working as, and with, collaborative pianists. The giveaway for today's episode of the podcast is a lifetime subscription to the “A Musical Life Mastermind” with Hugh sung which is just an amazing opportunity. At the end of my interview with classical music radio host Jill Pasternak, we decided to have a bit of fun and turn the tables where Jill interviewed - me! How strange to have a show where I'm my own guest! So - here's my "official" bio: Pianist Hugh Sung started to learn to play the piano with his mother at the age of 3. At the age of 13, Hugh entered The Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Eleanor Sokoloff, Jorge Bolet, and Seymour Lipkin. Hugh teaches piano to hundreds of students online through ArtistWorks, a website that features video lessons from some of the world's leading musicians. His passion for technology led to him co-founding AirTurn, a company that creates digital accessories for musicians like the DUO page turning pedals for tablets and computers.
