POPULARITY
As you know, dear listeners, I love music. We start each podcast with a song in part to shift the frame, taking people out of their academic selves and into a more informal conversation. Well, today's guests love music at least as much if not more than me, and they each make a strong case for music as medicine. Jenny Chen is a palliative care fellow at Yale who regularly sings for her seriously ill patients. Look for Jenny to potentially appear on the show America's Got Talent (no lie). Tyler Jorgensen not only plays music for his patients, starting out with just pulling up a tune on his iPhone, he and others at UT Austin and Dell med now wheel a record player into patients rooms and play vinyl, taking patients back to the sounds and routines - think taking the record out of the sleeve, placing the needle in the groove - of younger days. You can here Tyler and I having a great time singing together and sharing stories around his podcast My Medical Mixtape. And Theresa Allison is a geriatrician and ethnomusicologist who studies the role of music for people with dementia. The ability to appreciate, recognize, and engage with music is preserved even until late stages of dementia, and Theresa is examining how music can be useful from the time of diagnosis, not only for the person with dementia, but their caregivers. Many links today, including: -Alive Inside Movie and Music and Memory movement -Music and Creativity in Healthcare Settings - book by Hilary Moss -Tyler Jorgensen's article on Bringing Music to patients at the Bedside in JGIM -Tyler's reflection/story comparing palliative medicine to jazz - something I arrived at independently and tell all new trainees! This is not highly scripted orchestral music, people, it's Jazz. -Systematic review of music (and prognosis) in palliative care -Review of music and dementia interventions (Theresa Allison author) -Theresa Allison's paper on Music Engagement in Dementia Caregiver Relationships in Gerontologist -Jenny Chen's YouTube channel.

“I hated it, hated it with a passion.” — George Ramsay When George looks back on music lessons of his youth, he remembers only misery. Stuffy piano teachers, monotonous scales, and the dread of upcoming recitals made faking sickness a weekly occurrence. Music lessons were the enemy, and he'd do anything to miss them. But watching a high school friend learn from a teacher who taught improvisation & the rock music he loved changed his perspective. Music instruction could bring students alive, not just “make them better.” It could be FUN! He picked up the guitar with that teacher in mind and fell in love. Then he knew, “I just had to do something in music.” Together with his business partner, George has turned in-home music instruction on its ear. Equally as important, his business model provides a level of financial security for gig workers (his instructors) unheard of in the industry. People, passion, perspective. It's all here! Jessica Craft, Founder and CEO of Rock to the Future discussed this original program that supports positive youth development and economic empowerment through free, student-driven music programs for Philadelphia youth. Operating in areas that are underserved with enrichment opportunities, Rock to the Future works with the community and the youth participating to create programming that is compelling and fun for them. Thanks to donations and grants hundreds of students participate annually in-school, after school, and during the summer in schools, community locations, and now, in the re-entry programming, within juvenile justice facilities. She described the basics, there is no cost for students to participate, they receive an instrument and supplies, transportation to and from the classes and meals. No auditions required and beginners are welcome. The program is student-driven - youth lead their creation and collaborations and are included in decision-making and taught by trauma informed professional musicians. With a focus on original songwriting, peer collaboration, and live performance the program offers pathways to professional careers as well as mentoring, academic, college and grades readiness, paid internship and skill development opportunities. Students gain self-confidence, a sense of accomplishment, cooperation and patience, abilities they will be able to apply to their studies now and their goals in the future. Programs are provided in English and Spanish. Rock to the Future also addresses the needs of the students at home, with support for family through connections with resources like health, housing, and food security. Starting from 1,200 to 10,000 people on site with gross revenue of $3.5 million in 2020 which was eightfold higher than in 2015. They have a mission to keep the organization expanding in terms of people coming into the events. With the onset of the current pandemic, they have continued innovating to tackle covid restrictions being one of the few event organizers. Regardless of what Vibestown provides to the people of Tasmania, Ryan has a piece of advice to everyone: “Make sure you make decisions not on excitement but on strategy.” This means you have to make time and assess the situation before giving out your decision. This Cast Covers: Organizing music, art, and cultural festivals to bring excitement to the people of Tasmania. Nationally renowned Party in the Paddock, attracting the people in the country. Welcome to Musicians Tip Jar where we talk about musicians and money. We believe repetition works for remembering things, because by repeating things you're more likely to remember them and that is why we repeat things. I'm your host Chris Webb joined by my co-host and the musician who repeats all his best jokes, Dave Tamkin. Quote: “At the end, someone or something always gives up. It is either you give up and quit or the obstacle or failure gives up and makes way for your success to come through.”-Idowu Koyenikan (Author of the book; wealth for all Africans) So excited to have a chance today to reflect and highlight the year. We will review some of our favorite concepts and principles from season one, highlight a few of the best opportunities at musicianstipjar.com and give a bit of what's coming next for MTJ in season 2In 2010, Steve Blatt was hosting a classical music program for Colorado Public Radio. The station celebrated some of the most beautiful music ever composed, even as the news frequently reported cuts to school budgets which reduced or eliminated funding to local arts programs. Steve proposed asking his listeners to share their love of music with our state's children in a most tangible way. Soon, the first instrument drive was launched, requesting gently used band and orchestra instruments which could be refurbished and awarded to low income students.Donors understand that they are giving more than a violin or flute. They're sharing the sense of belonging to a community and pride in accomplishment which they felt. They frequently leave notes tucked in instrument cases, hinting at fun to be had, encouraging practice and thanking the young learners who will give their cherished instruments a new life.Bringing Music to Life conservatively estimates that 17,000 children have benefitted from the more than 5,500 instruments donated over the last decade. https://www.bringingmusictolife.org(Do's and Donuts)Do listen back to these episodes and let them service as motivation or a way to refocus when you need it.Do make having a financial plan a big pillar in your business.Don't give up your dreams and ignore your calling.Action:Leave us a comment or send us an email about what you would love to see In Season 2Connect with us at: https://www.musicianstipjar.com/ or send an email to musicianstipjar@gmail.com Intro & Outro Music Donated by: The Magi https://www.themagimusic.com Intro Read by: David “DJ” Lee of The Magi https://soundcloud.com/rockababyrock Picture by: Kit Chalberg https://kitchalberg.com/https://www.musicianstipjar.com/

GIFs. Poems. Tweets. Burnt Banksy prints. Anything can be turned into an NFT. The NFT space has helped traditional artists crossover into the digital world and make millions. However, one group of artists is still lagging: photographers. But artists like Judy Lindsey are making an effort to change all of that. Looking at it from a commercial perspective, NFT and photography are a match made in heaven. For years, digital photographers have had difficulties selling their work due to the number of photographers and protecting their intellectual rights. NFTs can solve all of these problems. They provide a perfect opportunity for photographers to make a hefty sum just from selling a single photo. Just ask Kate Woodman, who recently sold her “Always Coca Cola” image for more than $20,000. A photographer like Judy can now make a comfortable living selling minted photos. Of course, that's not the only thing about. Judy has struggled with mental issues all of her life, so the pandemic was especially rough on her. But NFTs kept her going. Judy and I talk about how art has saved our lives, her love for horses, her radio career, how she helped her brother transition into the NFT space, and everything in between. Key points discussed Introduction (00:00) How the NFT photography community started (01:53) Judy's mindset of loving-kindness, her soulmate horse, and mental health (08:16) Who was Judy at 12 years old, artistic upbringing, and living with anxiety (19:37) How anxiety affects Judy's art, working with BLM, and receiving death threats (28:57) Art education, being a gifted child, and helping her brother transition into NFT (34:08) Judy's radio show, Spotify playlists, and bringing music into the NFT space (43:39) Foundation fee, the flexibility of Open Sea, and BLVD ST (49:23) Additional Resources If you want to stay updated on Judy's work, you can follow her on Twitter. You can also follow the NFT Photo Art as well. To see her work, check her out on Open Sea and Foundation. Last but not least, check out Judy's radio show on KBCS 91.3. In today's episode, I wanted to celebrate 50 episodes in style by bringing someone who's work has had a profound impact on generations of musicians: bass player and author of The Inner Game of Music, Barry Green. I'm very happy and honored that Barry accepted to be on the show to have this very, very important conversation with me because his authentic approach to music-making has inspired and influenced thousands of musicians and redefined careers throughout the years. In today's conversation, Barry talks about some principles of the Inner Game, including what we should focus on, why we need to “Turn Up the Music” and how this simple act can transform our playing and change our life, how we can reach a state of relaxed concentration, how effective experience-lead learning is, and how to set effective goals. He expands further on: How “When you are playing the inner game, the quality of your experience becomes just as important as your actual success.” How the only game we have control over is doing what we do best How putting our focus on the things that we can control means that we can experience what we're doing fully How we can reach the state of relaxed concentration using: Awareness techniques (what we see, hear, feel, etc.) Commitment techniques (how well we prepare) Trust skills (physical memory and advanced preparation) Experience-lead learning: “Do” instructions VS “Awareness” instructions Having more fun and accomplishing more while practicing Setting productive and effective goals It was a true honor to have Barry on the show and I hope you enjoy his wisdom as much as I did and walk away inspired and motivated! Jazz and classical artists interviewed include Dave Brubeck, Bobby McFerrin, Joshua Bell, Frederica von Stade, Christopher Parkening, Evelyn Glennie, Gary Karr, Jeffrey Kahane and many more. Green's most recent book (and DVD) is called Bringing Music to Life and was published by GIA Music. The book is exploring three techniques of breath, pulse and movement that allow the musician to channel expression through their bodies. This work is based on exploring creativity and inspiration through collaboration with the great improvisation cellist David Darling and his organization called Music for People. The career of Anna MacDonald, a London-based musician and doctor, changed when she visited an orphanage in Iraq in 2014. The experience compelled her and colleague Alyson Frazier to establish a charity called Play for Progress, which helps children and young people who have made it to the UK as a single refugees, without family or support. Play for Progress gives them the opportunity to immerse themselves in music, play instruments and learn to compose. It’s a wonderful outlet for children who, in many cases, have been through highly traumatic experiences and can sometimes struggle to express themselves. Anna tells the story behind Play for Progress as well as her other organisation, the Association for Exiled Scots. Interviewed by Fraser Allen of White Light Media in the Caledonian Club, London.

SUMMER SPECIAL! Belvy Klein, Co-Founder of Riis Park Beach Bazaar and Brooklyn Night Bazaar, steps on to the New York Launch Pod to discuss what it’s like to bring music, food, drink, vendors, and fun to the beach and at its famous night market. After winning a request for proposal (RFP) late spring of 2015, Belvy Klein and his co-founder Aaron Broudo did not have a lot of time to invigorate the sleepy Rockaway Beach with life. But armed with the out-of-the-box thinking that Brooklyn Bazaar LLC, the parent company, is known for, Belvy and Aaron were able to transform Riis Park into a tourist destination that caught the eye of the New York Post as the number one item on its summer bucket list and the second best beach in America as rated by Yahoo! Travel. Rather than selling traditional food on the beach, Riis Park Beach Bazaar draws in visitors with an exciting mix of local food, vendors, free live music, and programming on a daily basis. With a unique location that captures the benefits of a beautiful beach and the vistas of Manhattan, New Yorkers have been flocking by car, bus, train, ferry, and bicycle. The result for the first season of the Riis Park Beach Bazaar was a 140% increase in attendance over the previous year. Belvy also talks about the forthcoming return of the Brooklyn Bazaar to the former Polonaise Terrace and the many exciting new features that his company is bringing to the former wedding venue. After starting at the DeKalb Market in Downtown Brooklyn and moving to Williamsburg then to Greenpoint this will be the fourth iteration of the popular Night Bazaar that utilizes the company’s recipe of live music, food, drink, vendors, and fun. In the episode, Belvy also talks about how the company has grown, how the Bazaar has been a springboard for its vendors, what it is like to be an independent concert venue in New York City and what it was like to lose the former space on Banker Street to BMW. Listen to the episode to get an inside look at what it is like to do business at the beach with the unpredictability of mother nature, and how Riis Park Beach Bazaar was able to gain the support of the local community by having a year round presence, and hear Belvy address criticism that his company is gentrifying the beach.
