The story of Fantastic Negrito is one of those stranger-than-fiction tales – born Xavier Dphrepaulezz and raised in a strict Muslim home, he had an aborted career as an R&B star under the name Xavier, a near-fatal car accident, a seven year break from music, and then came roaring back with what he called “Black roots music for Everyone.” As Fantastic Negrito, he won the first NPR Tiny Desk Concert and then three Grammys for his stomping, blues-rockin' albums. But the story has taken another unexpected twist, and that has led to Fantastic Negrito's new album, Son Of A Broken Man. During the quarantine part of the pandemic, Fantastic Negrito dug into his family's past on one of the ancestry sites. He'd found that he was the son of a “yarn-spinning” father who claimed roots in East Africa, but whose lineage actually went back several generations to a tobacco plantation in Virginia. Between the large number of siblings and the “punk rock story” of mixed marriage in his family, he uncovered a lot of inconsistencies with the stories of the past, and a whole lot of loving. Fantastic Negrito “hides behind the flashy jacket” and turns his trauma into art, playing some of his blues-stomp-and-roll music for everyone, in-studio. - Caryn Havlik Set list: 1. Devil In My Pocket 2. Crooked Road 3. I Hope Somebody's Loving You 4. Son of a Broken Man
Mark Deutsch is a brilliant and unique musician who has devoted the last 3 decades of his life to his instrument the Bazantar, which is unique to him. There is only one Bazantar, which is a double bass hybrid with elements of the sitar: it has 6 main strings, 4 drone strings, and 29 sympathetic strings. Mark grew up as a multi-instrumentalist, but primarily a classical, jazz and rock bass player, and gave up a successful career as a performer to devote himself to the Bazantar. While studying sitar with Ustad Imrat Khan, Mark begin delving into the universal fundamentals of music and its underlying frequency structures. The nonlinear mathematical patterns that exist in sound are found universally in the natural world, includeng seashells, and Mark goes into some of the math of the overtone series in some detail, as well as fascinating specifics of how the Bazantar and his playing of it have evolved. You'll hear Mark talk about how he developed his patented engineering solution to construct a separate housing for the sympathetic strings. In this episode, Mark demonstrated live, and also is sharing not only excerpts from previously released recordings, but a preview from an upcoming album. Viel Spaß in Amerika!

It's rivalry week here on The PantherPod, and Ethan Berger (Ferrum) and Tyler Wetterings (Emory & Henry) duke it out in studio before the panthers take the field on Saturday November 13, 2021
This conversation took place at just the right time. The Crooked Road 24 Hour Ultra is upon us with Ricky as race director. He and Sharon are well known in the local running community as two in the group of founding members of the Crooked Road Running Club. They have run countless long distance races and are excellent positive influencers in the running community. Ricky is a cancer survivor and is not slowing down. Sharon fell in love with running as well and these are two of the kindest people around. Enjoy!

Details, credits, errata: This week Sam and Alissa talk about The Maltese Falcon, one of Sam’s favorite films, with our terrific guest Jamelle Bouie of the New York Times. It’s a great flick we recommend highly do you—one of the all-time great movies ever made by any standard, and a great introduction to film noir. The movie is available to stream on HBO Max and also to rent or buy through various outlets but Sam hates the degraded quality you get with streaming and recommends the Warner Archive blu-ray that came out a couple of years ago, which has very nice blacks and no noticeable artifacts on the print.Jamelle, Sam and Alissa talk a bit about developing a Noir Syllabus; here’s everything the three of us mentioned, plus a couple of others added in to fill in some gaps by Sam after the fact:Laura (1944, Otto Preminger)Double Indemnity (1944, Billy Wilder)Murder, My Sweet (1944, Edward Dmytryk)The Big Sleep (1946, Howard Hawks)T-Men (1947, Anthony Mann)Out of the Past (1947, Jacques Tourneur)The Lady From Shanghai (1947, Orson Welles)Blood on the Moon (1948, Robert Wise)Key Largo (1948, John Huston)Raw Deal (1948, Anthony Mann)Stray Dog (1949, Akira Kurosawa)DOA (1949, Rudolph Maté)The Asphalt Jungle (1950, John Huston)The Third Man (1950, Carol Reed)In a Lonely Place (1950, Nicholas Ray)The Big Heat (1953, Fritz Lang)Drive a Crooked Road (1954, Richard Quine)Killer’s Kiss (1955, Stanley Kubrick)Kiss Me Deadly (1955, Robert Aldrich)Rififi (1955, Jules Dassin)Night of the Hunter (1955, Charles Laughton)The Killing (1956, Stanley Kubrick)Sweet Smell of Success (1957, Alexander Mackendrick)Extra Credit: Raw Deal, Miami ViceSam said that The Killing is only about 65 minutes long; he was thinking of Killer’s Kiss, which is 67 minutes. The Killing isn’t a huge time commitment, either, at 85 minutes. Our episode art is Stanley Kubrick’s 1949 photo “Commuters in Train Station, Chicago,” a beautiful picture made freely available by the Library of Congress through Wikimedia. Our theme song is Louis Armstrong and His Hot 5’s Muskrat Ramble, made freely available by the Boston Public Library and audio engineering shop George Blood, LP through the Internet Archive. Acts 9:19-22 19 And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus. 20 And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. 21 But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests? 22 But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.
A new original that I wrote for Emy's rendition of Darrell Scott's "Crooked Road". It's called "The Crooked Road To Buffalo", and is built on Buffalo Gals. A nod to the great recording Bill Monroe's Uncle Pen, with all the stately marches & stuff. Ethan Setiawan, Emy Phelps, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes & Nathan Sabat played on it as well.
Tom and Jesse discuss Human Desire, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, The Highwaymen, Story of a Prostitute, The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Annihilation, The Line-Up, Little Big Man, Alita: Battle Angel, Drive a Crooked Road, Henri-Georges Clozout's Inferno, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, Operation Pacific, The Legend of Cocaine Island, The Swimmer, The Curse of La Llorona, Hellboy (2019)

Pastor Jeff Smith preaches on Psalm 16, "Crooked Road."
On April 14, 2011, Nelson D. Lankford delivered a Banner Lecture entitled "The Crooked Road to Civil War." When Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated in March 1861, Virginia remained a loyal state within the Union. In the convention that met in Richmond to consider the commonwealth's relationship to the national government, union men held a strong majority. But as events unfolded, their loyalty wavered. Nelson Lankford recounts the dramatic events of that spring, when no one could foretell the future of the country, seemingly poised on the brink of dissolution. Dr. Lankford is vice president for programs at the Virginia Historical Society and author of "Cry Havoc! The Crooked Road to Civil War, 1861." This lecture is cosponsored with the Richmond National Battlefield Park. (Introduction by Paul A. Levengood) The content and opinions expressed in these presentations are solely those of the speaker and not necessarily of the Virginia Museum of History & Culture.
Hearing Bluegrass music in the hills of Appalachia is an experience that is almost impossible to describe. In this weeks episode I revisit the Crooked Road, Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail. This time however, I brought my recorder and captured some music, dancing and a conversation with luthier Larry Hicks. Larry makes the best acoustic guitars … Continue reading →
WOPI in Bristol, Tennessee has been broadcasting since 1929. It plays a critical role in the region and it now resides in a giant, three-story guitar. That's only part of story. The building and station are tied to a man named Joe Morrell. Joe Morrell, a musician in Curly King and the Tennessee Hilltoppers, made Guitars for bluegrass players on The Crooked Road, or Virginia's Heritage Music Trail. Emile Klein of You're U.S. shares the story of a man who helped cement Bristol's title of "The Birthplace of Country Music." and whose contributions are still supporting the region's rich musical heritage today. Special thanks to Emile Klein from @Youre-US for his help with this episode.
Traveling on the Crooked Road is an incredible American experience. Most people outside of the communities within it dont know what it is. For 300 miles in western Virginia, there is a stretch of road that is littered with music venues, luthiers and thousands of people who are dedicated to the preservation of Appalachian music. Bluegrass … Continue reading →

We bring you some brand new conversations with several authors including award-winning songwriter Neil Sedaka. He joins Cathy Lewis for a delightful conversation about his iconic music career, his hit number one hit song "Breaking Up is Hard to Do", and his latest venture, a children's book entitled "Waking Up Is Hard To Do." We'll also talk with author Joe Tennis as he takes readers on both sides of the Blue Ridge to explore the ghostly tales of Appalachia and the Crooked Road in his new book "Haunts of Virginia's Blue Ridge Highlands." And local author Waverley Traylor explores the rich and colorful stories of the Great Dismal Swamp in "The Great Dismal Swamp in Myth and Legend."
DARRELL SCOTT is a songwriter, acclaimed performer and recording artist. As a songwriter, he's contributed a string of hits that reads like a list of the best modern country music has to offer. There's the Grammy Award winning "Long Time Gone" and "Heartbreak Town," both top hits for the Dixie Chicks. "Great Day to be Alive" helped Travis Tritt complete his comeback; "Born to Fly" was a No. 1 hit for Sara Evans, while "Family Tree" was successful for Darryl Worley and "When No One's Around" extended Garth Brooks' run. Darrell returns to WoodSongs with a brand new double CD "A Crooked Road" before he hits the road for a string of dates with Robert Plant (yes, the Led Zepplin guy). EVIE LADIN plays old-time banjo. Listen and you can hear the whomp and jive of the genre's Appalachian heritage. You also hear the instrument's African roots. Now listen to Evie's genteel voice and lyrics and you hear the push and pull of life, you hear real, contemporary stories. Evie is known to music fans as a driving force behind San Francisco's all-gal old-time group the Stairwell Sisters. Based in Oakland, CA, is has just released her debut CD "Float Downstream."

I might start using this road myself instead of the train which took 5 hours last Saturday to get there from Belfast. This is yet another popular reel which I hadn't remembered until now.
