Hello everybody and welcome to the thirty seventh episode of BXB’s Bits and Bobs! A bi-weekly podcast where we talk about whatever we damn well please! This week we talk longer than we expected about a lot of stuff, including Battlerite, Battlestar Galactica Deadlock, Skyrim and Fallout 4's Xbox One X patches, Super Mario Odyssey, Dota and PUBG, and then spend a lot of time with some of your letters.
This episode is an artifact of a simpler time. Buried in the ground for mere days, when you excavate it now, you barely understand what is discussed. "Why aren't they talking about the new Mario game for half this episode?" you wonder, your brain unable to see what is right before you. Eventually you settle in and enjoy what you have and are a better person for it, but only because you listen to the episode while playing Mario. Discussed: the past, Cuphead, Battlestar Galactica Deadlock, Super Mario Odyssey, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, video game curricula, [Half-Life 2:] Epistle 3, Marc Laidlaw, Mike Laidlaw, Laidlaw & Laidlaw, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Rob, Rowan, and Kotaku's Luke Plunkett pull up a space chair and talk about Battlestar Galactica Deadlock. In addition to the admirable lack of colons in the title, Deadlock manages to take a licensed IP and turn it into a faithful and satisfying gaming experience. If the term "broadsides in space" gets your solar sails at half mast, this may be an episode for you.
Idle Weekend is back! After a too-long lapse where PAX happened and we all worked too much, Rob and Danielle return to what they know best: talking about Star Trek, Farscape, and immersive sims. After a riveting discussion of criminally under-utilized licenses in games and the new Dishonored, they open a heavy mailbag and an especially exciting discussion of weekend projects. Discussed: Battlestar Galactica Deadlock, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek (TOS), Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Farscape, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, Guy Fieri, Wonder Woman, Vienna Blood: A Max Lieberman novel, The Sheriff of Babylon, Starfighter (comic)
No heavy topics this time, just enjoyable discussions! Pinball: We launch our 2017 System 11 Tournament. Vote for your favorite System 11 pinball games (see link below). Then, we have a discussion about licenses in pinball during the 1990s, comparing the efforts of Premier/Gottlieb, Bally/Williams, and Data East/Sega. Video Games: We mention Destiny 2 (really, we do hardly anything else regarding it). Then, Tony spends a lot of time on Battlestar Galactica Deadlock. Finally, we catch everyone up on Overwatch updates. Pinball: Dennis and Tony cover Stern Pinball's manual indicating ghosting on inserts is normal, the finalized details of Spooky Pinball's Total Nuclear Annihilation, Dennis' acquisition of Sharkey's Shootout, a ranking poll the guys are running on the best billiards-themed pinball machine (solid state and later only), and they end the segment with more thoughts on Star Wars. Video Games: A few games are up for discussion this time. Tony starts off with Navalia. After that, there's a bit more on Overwatch's new character Doomfist, followed by Dishonored 2, Reigns, Crypt of the Necrodancer, and Jotun. Tony also brings up Battlestar Galactica Deadlock and Cold Waters. Tabletop: Tony and Dennis got a chance to play the Munchkin card game, and so now they talk about it (amazing)! Tony also provides an update on Planet Mercenaries and Threadbare RPG. Paul Turbett and Anthony Sweet from Black Lab Games who are based right here in Perth talk to us about their latest project Battlestar Galactica Deadlock and we asked what it is like to be responsible for the new game adaptation of one of the most beloved science fiction series ever and how to write a game in an established universe With subscription services like Netflix making it much easier to access bold and unique shows, new services like Jump are looking to fill in the gap in the gaming market and help indie studios who are struggling for exposure. Will a games on demand style service help this problem or is it only going to be a short term fix as more games appear, and it's harder to stand out from the crowd. Finally we had a look at different ways of playing games, sometimes we can be tempted to use that one wall breach or use quick save to avoid making the wrong story decision. However is this in the spirit of what the developer intended?
