Continuing our art from the heart and fruits of the spirit series, this talk looks at self-control through two paintings: JMW Turner's painting “Rain, Steam and Speed – The Great Western Railway” and Ben Hartley's, “Devon Lane, Westlake.”These paintings invite us to meditate on technology, development, infrastructure and housing and how these impact nature. We pause to consider how self-control in consumerism could help slow down climate change. The talk finished by looking at how we could bring new self-control practices into Lent.
The wettest April day on record, the warmest May on record, a summer that never really got going and a battering from Storm Darragh, we've certainly witnessed a variety of weather throughout 2024.Ben Hartley and Senior Forecaster at Ronaldsway Met Office Kirsty Pendlebury look back at the big weather events of the last 12 months.
This week, Rev. Ben Hartley joins us at Bothell. Rev. Hartley preaches from Acts 8:26-40 and connects the story of how Philip the Apostle's journey (or roadtrip) and his conversations with the Ethiopian eunuch on way to Samaria has an impacts on the world today.

The much-loved Peel Beach Mission is 60 years old this year. In conversation with Anglican Priest Rev'd Paul Lewis - a key member of the present team - we reflect on this summer outreach which aims to offer something to everyone of any age, and we celebrate the life of charismatic Michael Clarkson who led the mission from its start, until 2021. Sadly Michael passed away in September last year but his wife Pam continues to be part of the team. The Cathedral will close its doors this weekend - and is not expected to re-open until next Easter at the earliest - the Dean, the Very Rev'd Nigel Godfrey explains why - and in the Cathedral grounds, lay reader Rosemary Clarke tells Ben Hartley all about Stride and Ride - a treasure hunt involving 69 churches around the Island. Download the map at https://rideandstride.online/ then use any means of transport you wish, to visit the churches, spot the symbols, and have a chance to win a £100 Steam Packet travel voucher. Entry forms costing £5 each are available from participating churches, and from The Welcome Centre in Douglas. There's music too - and our usual notice board news. Over the coming days the weather is looking excellent, but when conditions are less favourable, how difficult is it to predict the weather at TT? With a course over 37 miles in length, that ranges from practically sea level to the highest points of the Island. In this extended podcast, Ben Hartley takes a trip to the Ronaldsway Met Office to find out what life is like for the team during TT fortnight, when the eyes and ears of the Island (and beyond!) are firmly fixed on what the weather is doing.
This week, we welcome Rev. Ben Hartley, associate professor at Seattle Pacific University and ordained deacon in the United Methodist Church preaching from John 4.
Ben Hartley you guys. The most dynamic, most interesting, most energy packed educator in the photography space shows up in a real way in this episode. I asked Ben to have this chat with me to talk about how he has shifted his social media focus to a much more community minded approach over the last several years but what I got instead was, true to form, an intense purpose filled conversation with a brilliant mind that went much deeper. Ben is absolutely hilarious but his comedy only aids his perspective that when we show up as our best selves, when we are intentional about lifting up the communities and friends and people right around us, and when we act with integrity the results are always positive. Whether you've found Ben because of the Six Figure Photography Podcast, or his Mastermind Group, or the Booked Solid workshop series, or Abundance, or heard him on a platform stage at WPPI, or this is your first experience diving into the mind of this amazing friend of mine let me tell you directly : Ben is one of the most authentically kind people I know. This conversation all centers around his perspectives on the "long game", showing up every day in an industry that you love with your best work, your best intentions, and your most positive outlook. You'll hear throughout this chat a general perspective that is pretty counter cultural to the wedding / portrait photography industry these days that says, more than likely you already have all that you need baked into you to succeed. Ben's vision as a coach is just to help you navigate through the garbage standing in your way and that perspective is as bold as it is beautiful. Grab a coffee for this one, a notebook, and prepare to just be filled up with some goodness. https://sleek.bio/benhartley The Photographic Collective Podcast is a production of PhotoCo, hosted by Arkansas based Photography team Miles Witt Boyer and Jared Mark Fincher. Ben is a wedding photographer and business coach based in Ohio and soon to be Tampa, FL. He hosts the Six Figure Photography Podcast and offers meaningful business coaching every week in his Facebook group. I've wanted to have Ben on the podcast for a while because I greatly how he coaches. He tends to swim again the stream and focus more on your mindset and how you treat others rather than shallow statistics to boost sales. Today we're talking about Chain Reaction Marketing and how you can maximize your marketing efforts by being mindful of these chain reactions. This episode is sponsored by Freedom Edits. Get 30% off your first order by going to https://www.lightdarkco.com/freedom (lightdarkco.com/freedom) Be patient and give time for new marketing techniques to work. Keep showing up, but show up where you want to belong. If the marketing effort is unilateral, it's either inefficient or not thought through. It's a single domino falling be itself. Each marketing effort should compound with the next. Nothing should be done in isolation. The things in your business that are going to get to you to what you say you want - the things that are going to make the difference in your life - they are most likely the things that are important but not urgent. How is the marketing you're about to do going to move you closer to goal you have for your life? Set an aim for what you're moving toward and then think of marketing efforts that will move you toward that goal. Welcome back to SEASON TWO of FOCUS & FACETS! In this episode, I am so, so excited to chat with my longtime brilliant friend, Ben Hartley. We're talking chain reaction marketing and how to intentionally think through your marketing efforts and strategies in a way that creates a domino effect that positively drives traffic and exposure back to your business. Note: *All episodes of this season were recorded between May 2021 to November 2021. Some references and conversations might reflect past tense events.* Takeaways from this episode: Create the vision for your business, and be sure that all that you do serves your vision If your marketing strategy is unilateral - it needs to be thought of as a chain reaction. Think domino effect. Each step should amplify the next. Value is found within connection. 028. In August, I had the opportunity to attend WPPI—a photography conference in Vegas. I learned a lot and had a great time with my good friend Jasmine Norris. But, since attending this conference and specifically Ben Hartley's “Work Hard on Your Business, Make a Salary. They like to think about it, they like to read about it, and then they go to the next book and they listen to the next podcast, and they attend the next workshop, and they talk and they talk about what they’re going to do. But then they don’t ever get around to doing nothin’.” [19:10] As creatives, a lot of us struggle to move into the launch or action phase of our pursuits. Like Ben Hartley, today’s guest says, we think and talk and plan but often fail to pull the trigger. Well, if you need some motivation, Ben might just be your guy. Ben is the founder of Style and Story Creative, an award winning wedding photography and commercial videography agency that has been featured on Creative Live, The Today Show, The Huffington Post and more. He also runs the Six Figure Photography Podcast and blog aimed at helping photographers achieve success in their business, but in a way that complements their ideal lifestyle. Before all this success however, Ben was a restaurant server with a degree in oil painting who just happened to hear about a job opening at a local video production studio. With no experience in video, through determination and action, Ben found a way to get that job, ultimately leading to a long and successful career in video and photography. After hearing Ben’s story, you’ll be hard pressed to come up with excuses about why the time isn’t right to pursue this project, or why you can’t achieve that goal.
