Jay Cassario is the photographer every known photographer knows. He's been around for long enough to see the industry eb and flow and has this remakably simple outlook on life. A Leica Ambassador with a decade of weddings under his belt Jay didn't come into the wedding industry until long into his adult life. A career that left him feeling unfulfilled gave way to an opportunity to get back to doing what his mom did when he was a kid. Wedding photography was literally in his blood however this simple desire to live authentically, raise his son on the farm he grew up on in southern New Jersey, and photograph weddings from a place of intentionality is all his. Jay has this magnetic composure to him. A larger than life guy with a million stories who has maintained a posture of humility and kindness despite incredible success. We're excited to share with the world the Jay so many photographers know and call friend. The normal dude with a big laugh behind some absolutely remarkable images. https://www.jaycassario.com/ Check here for Jay's website or find him on instagram https://www.instagram.com/jaycassario/ This episode mentions our new partnership with Narrative Edit - the one place where you can cull, ship, and curate Ai edited images right through Adobe Lightroom with our very own color science applied. https://narrative.so/edit for more information and make sure you try the Iconic Color Style by Miles Witt Boyer. It's 2024. The landscape of instagram and tik-tok (RIP?) and X (twitter?) and Facebook (is that still a thing?) is exhausting. It's a daily shift of what is trending and how to utilize the right audio, the right format, the right hashtags at the right times so that people even (gasp) see the work. If you're exhausted with even trying to wander through the darkness of social media you're not in the minority. The fact of the matter is the days of posting a photo, a super deep quote, and sitting back and watching clients roll in are over and catchy reels seem to be here to stay for awhile. Before you spend hours designing reels in Adobe or downloading some horrible tacky app that Instagram lowkey penalizes you for using anyway we're bringing in the expert in Instagram Reels to walk us through the future. Angela isn't JUST the founder and CEO of Social Templates, she's also a really talented photographer with a long history of taking beautiful images and getting those images into the hands of the right couples. This chat is all about the practicality of the future and how important being intentional with social media can be. This in depth conversation is all about the growth of this idea. How Angela went from being an educator at WPPI to being a brand on the tradeshow floor and how you as a photographer can benefit from utilizing better instagram strategies in 2024 to reach the clients you're searching for. Momtogs you're doing a good job! I'm not just talking to the hobby shooters (though you're doing a great job too) but to the huge population of wildly talented, super busy, keep all the balls in the air kids to school lunches prepped laundry folded while also shooting editing and absolutely slaying the photography world women out there. This episode was supposed to be for you - and then, April started talking and I realized... --We all need to hear this stuff.-- An episode full of truth and totally relatable stories and struggles and tiny wins from April Payne, a Houston based wedding and portrait photographer who is as humble as she is talented. So many people in this industry come to the end of fall and absolutely collapse from exhaustion. We burn ourselves out every year trying to strike while the irons hot in our minds but this episode really opens up the truth of how quickly success can show up when you just keep moving the needle forward a little at a time and surround yourself with people who believe in you. April's perspectives here are absolutely powerful. "I can do the scary stuff" is a mantra that has taken her from a brand new photographer to a completely in demand brand in only a few years all while managing to keep her marriage, her home, and her family front of mind. This interview is a great chance to reset our priorities coming into the holidays and a slower season for most of the photo industry and audit our goals and who we're surrounding ourselves with for support. She is a force. Vanessa Joy is everywhere. Canon Explorer of Light. The founder of The Photo Insiders. Prolific speaker, personality, educator. Sought after wedding photographer. Vanessa Joy is a pretty remarkable brand but behind all of that she is this really approachable, humble, beautiful human finding her way through success and failure in the most relatable way. We set off in this conversation with her to take a break from some of the more tip intensive episodes or heavy high level interviews to just unplug with Vanessa. To chat about her challenges, her wins, and how she juggles being a mom and a wife and a friend with big dreams and so many eyes watching. I know Jared and I walked away with a refreshed perspective on how both human and super human Vanessa Joy really is. This is the come back tour. The episode where we talk through what Jared and I have been up to over the last few months as we've taken a short break from this podcast and tackled a project we've been dreaming up for years. It's a cool look into the world of color science, what quality editing looks like for photographers in 2023 and how we partnered with one of the coolest brands to design what we truly feel like are the most versatile and beautiful Lightroom presets on the market and the best part? They're not even available for another week which means that listeners of this episode will be a few of the first to get their hands on them. Don't call him a street photographer. Derek Fahsbender is a legend in the Bronx and a familiar smile on the other side of the street in neighborhoods all over New York City. His bold approach to shooting the faces and the spaces of the city he calls home has shaped not only his own portfolio but the work of countless other shooters who call the streets of New York home. Close friends with icons of the genre like Phil Penman and Rinzi Ruiz what makes Derek's work unique is a truly intentional approach to his composition and an unbelievable ability to make people comfortable with him in pretty uncomfortable situations. He has a bold opinion about success, an unapologetic perspective on how to push your own work forward, and the backing of a few of the most known brands and retailers on earth standing right behind him and if that isn't enough to convince you that this conversation is worth hearing I can personally promise you, his vulnerability and humility will. One of my closest friends in the photography industry this was a chat I've been waiting to have publicly for a long time. Typically held over a whiskey at a tiny bar in New York or tucked away from the crowds over dinner at WPPI in Las Vegas my friendship with Derek has been filled with these conversations from the very beginning and I'm pretty excited to be able to share a deeper side of Derek with the world. "I never thought I would live to see 42" Alison's story is one of ultimate perspective. In her first episode on this podcast we dived into a story filled with creative perspective and intentional, thought provoking heart. Before Alison found her wedding photography on the covers of major magazines like Martha Stewart Weddings chalking up awards and international attention from a few of the largest photography brands on earth she was a grieving teenager processing the loss of her mom at 42 years old by learning to develop old film negatives of her alongside her dad in a makeshift darkroom in their house. At 13 she found out she carried the same genetic heart disorder and what she thought would be an inevitable expiration date ticked closer and closer this last year. We interview Alison on a "bonus day" in the 200's. That's 2/3 of a year after she survived the unthinkable, setting her camera aside and undergoing a full heart transplant after her heart hit nearly 100% failure. Perspective is a powerful thing. Sitting down with Alison for this interview felt altogether different and yet somehow familiar. This is still the brilliant artist with the big smile and remarkable purpose behind her work but now with literally a new heart beating inside of her chest. Don't miss this opportunity to hear her story, to lean into the lessons she's learned about how important the photos of the people we love are, and to simply listen to her process her own story and learn to accept that this new lease on life is one she never knew she would have. She is a Fujifilm X Photographer and her work can be seen here https://www.alisonconklin.com/ or via her Fujifilm profile page here https://fujifilm-x.com/en-us/photographers/alison-conklin/ She can also be found over in the large group for the Photographic Collective, a community packed with positive, purpose filled photographers from around the globe. Let's get down to it. Hustle is not appreciated nearly enough. Sitting down in this interview with Chris from LVL13 Wedding Films based in New Jersey to simply appreciate what hard work turns into. Chris' story is really interesting and his work is some of my favorite I've ever seen in the wedding video industry but it's his humility, his work ethic, and his character that show up in this conversation. We're flooded with big egos in the photo/video world these days. There's a general approach to success that says that you don't need to make it if you can convincingly fake it for long enough and Chris is a refreshing answer to that. He's a successful guy but it's not the success that drives him. Creating work he's proud of along side close friends for clients he connects with all so that he can provide for a family that he loves; this dude has his head on straight and this conversation could easily serve as a clear reminder that there really are some remarkable names out there you may not have heard of yet. She's like the wizard of oz of the wedding industry. The founder of Junebug Weddings and the Worlds Best Wedding Photographers. She has helped shape and curate some of the most iconic portfolios in our industry. She is Meryl Streep from the Devil Wears Prada, a bold mind that has shaped the look and feel of wedding photography for over a decade and yet somehow she is still so approachable, kind, humble, generous. This chat with Blair deLaubenfels and Miles is eye opening as they talk through the importance of curation, community, collaboration, and consistency. If you've ever wondered how to approach getting your wedding photography published, how to better curate your portfolio to speak directly to the clients you're hoping to reach, how important having a consistent look and feel to your images is, or simply what it's like to be on the consulting end of the photo/video industry this episode is going to answer so many questions for you. Curate. It's that word that people don't want to hear, but need to. The challenge here is simple : are you showing work that communicates your value to the right people, in the right ways, at the right times? Are you leaving your best work on the editing floor or including too much? Are your processes for editing and post production stuck in the early 2000's? Are you actually getting any better or is every Uncle Joe snagging a camera at Cost Co catching up to you? Before you get all down on yourself consider this : maybe as a photographer you're best work just isn't being found hidden down deep amongst the most obvious stuff. Maybe just like your favorite band ever, it's the deep cuts that say the most about you as an artist. Sitting on this episode with two absolute legends. James Broadbent founded Narrative to solve the problems that photographers all over the world are facing. From the headaches of blogging to managing the culling and cataloging process outside of Lightroom this is a dude with incredible vision and insight and right along side him we bring in Kyle Wilson, wedding photographer, artist, and Narrative team member to spit ball together the way curating work can elevate it's value. This chat is filled with so many nuggets of wisdom and perspective we should probably charge for it, but instead we're going to give it away for free and then ask you to do a few things with this info! From documentary photography on the other side of the world to high fives with President Obama, mountain biking adventures to working with the press Garrett has chased down the stories of humans all over the world. His eye for photography shaped early on influenced by a love for culture and an education from one of the world's most prestigious photography schools Garrett's story comes alive as he starts to talk about finding his place in the world. We asked Garrett to be a part of this podcast because of just a sliver of his story. Leaving the Washington DC area to move closer to a place where his passion for mountain biking and the outdoors could be a more prominent part of his family's life but what we got out of him was more than Jared and I could possibly have expected. A story of intentionality, willingness to learn, humility, and so many amazing successes along the way. The simple fact is that Garrett Hubbard as a photographer, a film maker, a director, a father, and a husband is a man that we can all learn from as he so calmly describes his craft through the vein of it's value to sharing the stories of other people - to other people. I walked away from this interview with a keen appreciation for the talent and the accomplishments of the people who quietly drive our industry forward always more focused on doing a good job than getting praise for it. Perhaps what strikes the hardest about this interview with Garrett is his willingness to give credit to the people from all over the country that have simply opened doors for him to walk through. Community is a critical element to success and Garrett Hubbard is absolutely willing to share his success with the people who have contributed to it. https://www.garretthubbard.com/ PhotoCo and the Photographic Collective Podcast are productions of The Photographic Collective LLC ©2023. It is a big task trying to cast vision for something that can affect the industry as a whole and these are the voices of a few of the people who are looking to do just that. If you're looking for a business coach, an accountability team, an editing workflow, a marketing strategy, or just a friend in the imaging industry we're discussing today something being built simply to serve you. This conversation with UK educator Tom Wright, US based film maker and director Brandon Buccheri, Architectural and portrait photographer, producer, and musician Jared Mark Fincher and Fujifilm Global Ambassador and wedding photographer Miles Witt Boyer is a candid, organic, raw approach to casing that vision. Everybody has heard of GPresets. Like everybody. These Lightroom presets are stylistic and edgy and as if the signature packs aren't rad enough they've somebody partnered with a few of the coolest photographers in the world to match and sell their color science as well. This episode isn't about G though, at least not directly. It's about Greg. The guy behind GPresets. Greg is this brilliant musician turned photographer turned entrepreneur in Northern California who has spent the last several years simply helping photographers get more out of their images. This chat was really laid back and unplugged just getting to know Greg and talking through what the industry has been like through a different perspective over the last few years and though we didn't pack this thing with actionable tips on ways you can get better as photographer if you listen closely you'll soak up some really powerful knowledge from a guy who has conquered a lot of the wedding and photography world on his journey to the top. It was a year filled with absolute growth. The photo industry boomed coming out of the Covid hole and somehow riding that wave Jared convinced me to start this little podcast that would end up growing into a bit of a movement. Here we are so many seasons in with the who's who of guests behind us and we couldn't think of a better way to kick off 2023 than to rehash last year. Our favorite guests, photographers, film makers, and industry professionals. Our favorite moments, quotes, and tid bits. Our favorite memories jumping head first into the world of educations, community coordinators, and obviously podcasters. This episode was a blast to record and a chance to really expose our listeners to the guy behind so much of the magic at PhotoCo. Jared will be helping to host more often moving forward as well as helping me shape the way the PhotoCo community, small group trainings, workshops, and courses come together! A huge start to the year and a huge opportunity to share what we're most excited about as this humbling, exciting, and wild ride continues beneath us! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mwbpodcast/support
Ben Hartley you guys. The most dynamic, most interesting, most energy packed educator in the photography space shows up in a real way in this episode. I asked Ben to have this chat with me to talk about how he has shifted his social media focus to a much more community minded approach over the last several years but what I got instead was, true to form, an intense purpose filled conversation with a brilliant mind that went much deeper. Ben is absolutely hilarious but his comedy only aids his perspective that when we show up as our best selves, when we are intentional about lifting up the communities and friends and people right around us, and when we act with integrity the results are always positive. Whether you've found Ben because of the Six Figure Photography Podcast, or his Mastermind Group, or the Booked Solid workshop series, or Abundance, or heard him on a platform stage at WPPI, or this is your first experience diving into the mind of this amazing friend of mine let me tell you directly : Ben is one of the most authentically kind people I know. This conversation all centers around his perspectives on the "long game", showing up every day in an industry that you love with your best work, your best intentions, and your most positive outlook. You'll hear throughout this chat a general perspective that is pretty counter cultural to the wedding / portrait photography industry these days that says, more than likely you already have all that you need baked into you to succeed. Ben's vision as a coach is just to help you navigate through the garbage standing in your way and that perspective is as bold as it is beautiful. Grab a coffee for this one, a notebook, and prepare to just be filled up with some goodness. https://sleek.bio/benhartley The Photographic Collective Podcast is a production of PhotoCo, hosted by Arkansas based Photography team Miles Witt Boyer and Jared Mark Fincher. A very special 50th episode featuring special guest Joe Torres. Joe is a wedding photographer and videographer based in New York City who has taken a straight forward, simple approach to selling his services to couples all over the tri state area and has an impressive rate of conversions. His intentional approach to building relationships and establishing trust with clients before discussing cost allows him to convey himself more as an "assistant buyer" than the seller. Through that lens Joe walks us through a sales process as well as gives some great tactics and tidbits on how he has scaled a small photo and video company into a full time job in almost no time with an army of happy clients behind him. Joe is a member of the Photographic Collective Community, a free to join creative group that exists simply to scale the value of the voices inside of it. This conversation is a perfect example of the kind of chat that happens weekly inside the community with the intent on building more legacy minded, service oriented creatives. If you're struggling with how to price your photography, building packages, understanding sales, client workflow, or simply want a refresher on how simple it can be to close the deal with your ideal client when you know how to communicate your value to them : this conversation is for you. https://josephtorresphotography.com/ The Photographic Collective Podcast is hosted by Arkansas based Wedding Photographer Miles Witt Boyer with sound by Jared Mark Fincher. Photographer. Bike Mechanic. Real Estate Agent. Scuba Instructor? Aaron Anderson has lived ten lives not stumbling into photography until he had chased a few other rabbits in his life. The one thing that hit me the hardest in this episode though was his intentionality. Over the last three years Aaron and his wife Joy have sold almost everything they owned, including their home and moved into an RV with their 3 kids to simply invest in time and experiences together as a family. Initially I asked Aaron to be on the show because of his keen sense of light and his remarkably creative eye but what come to the surface in this chat with him was how important the elements of his life that inform that creativity are to him. Aaron is a commercial freelance photographer currently living in an RV park outside of the Dallas, Texas area - but that's just been for the last few weeks or so. Before that it was in LA, and who knows before that. His family's deep desire to pursue experiences together and share in those experiences has clearly permeated into his work. As a commercial shooter Aaron's photography is at the top of the industry. With a refined eye for retouching and finished product and a rolodex of big name clients and olympic athletes along side a formal sponsorship by Fujifilm this this an artist who has earned a little bit of ego and yet you'll hear in this episode he has absolutely none. Quick to defer success to the teams of people around him. Quick to see his role on set as a person who has the opportunity to show respect and love and appreciation to everybody else who is helping him do his job well. Quick to get home in time to tuck his kids in bed. Aaron jumped in this one interview from one of my personal favorite photographers to a man, a dad, and a husband I really look up to. www.andersonvisuals.com IG: @aaronandersonvisuals Twitter: @a2foto We're hosting a whole conversation after the publishing of this episode over in the Photographic Collective Forums. She directed, shot, and edited a feature length documentary in 9 countries, in 9 languages all about coffee. If I don't have you hooked there I don't know what will. Today's guest is Brooke Bierhaus. She's done documentary film and photo work in 18 countries with an extreme and somehow gentle passion towards telling the stories of the humans in the places she travels. She's bold, assertive, strong, and somehow filled with so much grace and compassion for the world around her. This is a story filled with courage. From war torn countries to small mid western towns in the US Brooke's story is filled with nuggets of home and kindness and throughout the last year of getting to know her I will say that her passion for story comes only second to her love of relationship. This is a special episode. Not only is Brooke a friend right here in my home town of Bentonville, Arkansas, she was also a client of mine on the other end of my camera at her wedding earlier this year. Getting to know her, drink coffee and eat the most delicious coffee cake at her home, hang out with her husband, and now offer a platform to help tell her story has been an absolute honor. Tell better stories. That's a mantra every photographer and film maker should strive to repeat. The live a life filled with the curiosity of the human experience is a special thing and to be a full time story teller is a job title reserved for a pretty select few creatives. Today's episode is with my friend Varina Shaughnessy. Let me start by saying Varina is brilliant. Her ability to understand, to observe, to empathize has been shaped over a decade spent watching stories come to life. Whether as a film maker, an interviewer, or a wanderer Varina's own story has been filled with intentionality and opportunity. This chat with her is packed full of nuggets of wisdom she has picked up along the way as well as moments that have shaped her. From meeting her husband who was a journalist in Uganda, to being hired by one of the world most foremost imaging companies to help tell their brand story Varina has lived an amazing life that I can't wait to share. Fer Juaristi is one of the most creative wedding photographers in the world today, and most humble. His work has permeated and affected the industry at a global level mixing wild cinematic movement and composition with quirky design and tons of energy. From his home in Monterey, Mexico to the corners of the world Fer's photographic journey has left him with a really unique and special perspective on his family, his priorities, and why this job matters so much. This sit down with Fer was all about maximizing our creative ceiling. Seeing things in new ways, pursuing personal growth over business success, and building a strong community of like minded friends are just a few of the topics that we covered on our way through Fer's story. Fer says it best in this interview. For years the wedding photography industry has been consumed by people quick to niche themselves into a style or micro genre. Documentary shooters. The Looks Like Film people. The Fearless Photographers. Often what we end up seeing when these communities arise is a level of insecurity towards the way other people are doing things. Fer's perspective on pulling little ideas, concepts, creative tactics from as many sources as possible and allowing all art to permeate into his work may be the reason that his photography is so creatively compelling. It really is a great conversation with one of my very favorite shooters in the world today. Are you spending more of your life running towards something or away from something? Most of us are doing one or the other. For the vast majority of the world, perhaps especially the photography and creative industry at large the idea of the hustle, the grind, the no days off mindset takes us on a constant rollercoaster of brief moments of inspiration and near total burn out. Creative fatigue lurks behind every corner because we confuse two key things. Busyness and productivity. Today's episode is all about breaking down the fallacy of the hustle. Listen, after 15 years running a successful photography business I can certainly say I've spent more weeks working over 50 hours than I have under but what I've learned is this : I waste as much time as I spend and I can't get any of it back. The reason so many creatives lose their passion, their focus, and their relevance isn't creative evaporation, it's constant fatigue and you know what we need? A break. The grace to step away from the camera, our inboxes, social media, networking events, education and plug into our families and friends. The intentionality to dive head first into a life lived with purpose and careers spent fulfilling a passion that reflects that purpose rather than just perpetual busyness. The scarcity is in your head. The fear is holding you back. The answer may not be more work but more intentional play. If you're a photographer in 2022 you're likely living a bit of a double life. The one on social media where you're a refined playful sudo-influencer with a cool big brimmed hat and the cutest latte's and then the one where you've got stacks of past due bills and tax statements you don't quite understand along side memory cards you think are backed up on your desk at home. Sound familiar? Ok, maybe I'm exaggerating both ends a bit but you get the idea. In this day and age being an active photographer for some reasons makes us want to hide the mistakes that make us the most human and yet, if you'll listen to this story you might just hear about a mistake that I made recently and how it actually brought me closer to the people on the other end of my camera. Being a wedding photographer or portrait photographer doesn't have to mean we live perfect lives, nor does it mean that our goal for our work should be perfection. I'm Miles Witt Boyer, I'm just a normal dad and husband living in middle America. I get to go to a few really cool places with a few really awesome people and in the middle of all of that stuff, I also make mistakes, get tired, eat chips and queso instead of chicken and asparagus, and forget to call my friends back. So how about we do this thing : 23 minutes of me just being... me. Bored yet? That's ok too - maybe behind it all I'm a little boring. You'll have to listen to find out. What happens to your career when you become more focused on being successful than serving your clients? Sometimes we need to remember that every time we're told no it doesn't mean we're on the wrong path. Sometimes a disappointing result can be the catalyst for enormous opportunity. This episode we're sitting down with UK based portrait and commercial photographer and videographer Tom Wright. Tom is no stranger to success though you may not have heard of him as a prolific voice in the industry. He's been the creative mind in the shadows of some absolutely remarkable work but his perspective and humility have grown him not only a remarkably positive reputation amongst the photography industry, but a loyal customer base that trusts him to solve their problems creatively. Aside from a radical perspective filled with empathy toward his clients and a refreshing approach to success in general what makes Tom Wright's perspective worth a listen is simple. He is no stranger to No but his response to it has been a catalyst to enormous opportunities. Over the course of the last few years starting really in the height of the Covid-19 pandemic I've had the opportunity to get to know Tom on a personal level as a friend. His photography and videography, usage of lighting, color theory, editing, and even objective perspective towards coaching and mentoring other creatives has permeated into so many areas of my business. PART 2! Jai Long has a story that has been told countless times, but not like this. This is a guy who's backstory has informed and prepared him to become one of the most sought after and prolific educators, podcasters, and personalities in the photography world today and yet for as often as he is interviewed people miss the magic that makes Jai so special. This episode is all about finding that magic. Understanding the way a kid from Australia who has been homeless several times, in and out of government housing with no formal education can not only beat the odds but turn his life into something so remarkable forever changed the way I look at all Jai has accomplished. He's brilliant, creative, kind, and bold. Not one to raise his hand when he has a question, not one to wait in line to be served, not one to follow social standards that get in the way of pursuing dreams, Jai's life has been a series of courageous, unrealistic goals turned into reality. We took some time in this episode to understand the origins of the Six Figure Business Map, the Wedding Summit, Free the Bird Photography, NoSkin Clothing, and so many of Jai's other businesses and ideas and what I learned was that Jai simply refuses to separate himself from his work but also refuses to separate his work from his joy. He goes all in on his success and his relationships simultaneously making sure that wherever he shows up he is at his best. One of the best interviews I've heard him give, though clearly I'm a bit biased, and I'm eager to see the world see Jai Long through a new lens. The art of saying "No" and the way it increases the value of your Yes. If you only listen to one podcast episode this week in the entire world of podcasts, whether you're a photographer, film maker, designer, creative, or just curious entrepreneur this episode should be it. The vulnerability that Brandon Buccheri takes into this chat to talk about how important those two little letters are is amazing. There's a misconception in business that we become more valuable when we solve every problem that comes our way but the truth that Brandon discusses with me in this episode is that we have to know which problems to solve, which clients to take on, which paths to take, and which future we want to embrace as professionals. It is in learning to say "no" to opportunities that will dilute or distract from our goals that we increase the value of the problems we choose to say yes to. Mindset coaching like this can be a subtle and yet powerful way to realign yourself to your goals. In The Collective we're not simply empowering creativity, we're creating community. Encouraging creatives to make more intentional decisions for their families, their industries, and their businesses that translate into more purpose filled lives and more joy. Brandon Buccheri is an original member of the Photographic Collective, an active admin in our free to join Facebook Group, and the cofounder of a production company based in the Dallas/Fort Worth area called Evoko Films. His compassion for his industry and passion for telling stories with films has opened the door to a remarkably wise and mature perspective on business. They say it's in the eye of the beholder but what does that even mean? Is it possible that we've all gotten a little off track with what we think is beautiful? Is it possible that in a world of insights and photoshop and social influence the very idea of something being beautiful doesn't mean what it used to? In this episode with Michigan based wedding and portrait photographer David Kovacs we're digging into this very topic. How can we reset out mindset to be more sensitive, more inspired, and more surrounded with beauty as artists? How can we allow the smallest details in life to permeate into our art and our work in truly beautiful ways? This episode continues on our season three goal of taking our podcast deeper in to the mind and motivation of all creatives, not just photographers and videographers and helping us to form more healthy, more complete, and more empowered habits. This episode is an absolute must listen and a foundational conversation with a good friend that I can't wait to be able to really share. "I just want to use my imagination and make money with it." We couldn't have picked a more bold start to season 3. Jay Worsley is not only one of the most talented and recognized film makers in the industry his perspective and purpose is absolutely inspirational. The future of film making and photography isn't measured in insights and metrics of likes and follows and Jay explains to us why our mindset and our purpose has to be bigger. Your creative mindset has to rise above surface level concepts of success in order to leave a lasting mark on the world around you and this episode absolutely was a challenging and also relatable reminder of the battles creative entrepreneurs face today. From Jay Worsley "I'm one of those crazy passionate people. I find something I'm passionate about and my head just explodes with ideas, opportunities, and memories.I have this idea that there is an insane amount of beauty in the world. Whether in the deep forest, the sandy beaches, or even in the people surrounding us. This idea that there is endless story and beauty every where you look. That is what I pour into my films and any project I am lucky to be a part of.I create story driven films meant to evoke emotion while at the same time showcasing a brand's message or product." sonderstorytelling.com instagram.com/jayworsley The Photographic Collective is a free community of creatives powered by Miles Witt Boyer along side a few of the most influential names in the photography and film making world today. SEO is this mythical monster that either exists to bring us endless numbers of new opportunities or to keep the world from seeing our work. At least that was my impression leading up to this call. The truth is that Search Engine Optimization is this theoretical process that so many of us in the photographic world pretend to understand and fail at so miserably. Enter Dylan Howell. Dylan is an incredible wedding photographer from Portland that saw the influence that having a visible website on Google had on his business and instead of simply keeping all of that information to himself he decided to teach it to anybody that would listen. If you're struggling with keywords, blogging, layout, alt tags, load times, or simply finding your website on the 78th page of Google this episode is for you. It's a refreshingly simple and positive perspective on a few things we can do to turn the momentum of SEO in our favor as well as a few stories and lessons Dylan has learned along the way. Who you are as a photographer, an artist, and an entrepreneur comes down to a sum of your experiences, your opportunities, and your God given talents. The world around us seems hell bent on compartmentalizing everything and yet the stories of photographers like Max Grubb's who grew up on a tiny island on the other side of the world and picked up a camera as a way to try and capture and make sense of all of the changes in his life that were coming right along side growing up shows us just how similar we all are. We all have this desire to express ourselves and to organize the world around us. We all have a back story. We all have faced challenges and people who didn't look like us, think like us, or believe what we do and yet when the camera becomes an outlet to learning and understanding the stories of the people around you the color and beauty of their lives bleeds into yours. Max Grubb is a wedding photographer based in Northwest Arkansas with a story that starts on the other side of the world. His eye for light and moment is empowered by a deep desire to serve and understand the stories that he is asked to capture and the work that is produced through his camera is some of the best I've ever seen. In this episode we dig deep into Max's upbringing but quickly get into the secrets to his success as a photographer and how building relationships and humanizing his subjects has allowed him unrestricted access to more authentic, more intentional, and more creative imagery. If you'd like to see Max's work check out his website or simply connect with him directly through his instagram page. The Photographic Collective is powered by Miles Witt Boyer Photography. From the moment Rebecca Bradley starts talking on this episode with her cool New Zealand accent her obvious passion for people takes over. She's an artist with a fascination in humanity and it has lead her to not only be an incredibly successful and connected wedding photographer on the other side of the world from us here in the PHOTOCO headquarters but also connected her with one of my very favorite software companies. Rebecca's art, alongside her job with NARRATIVE is all geared around serving people and this conversation with her is such a beautiful authentic exploration of where all of that started for her along with a few key lessons and things she's learned along the way. You can't expect yourself to power through week after week without fatigue. You can't be all things to all people. You can't perfect a process professionally and not expect it to affect how present you are personally. You can't grow without rest. This week's episode is all about your health. We're taking a mental health break from loads of amazing advice from a few of the world's most affluent artists and photographers to bring it all back to center for a moment. We all know that we are the most vulnerable to impostor syndrome, insecurity, fear, and ultimately failure when we're stretching ourselves too thin and diluting the magic that makes our work special in the first place. So this week I'm alone just talking through some of the lessons I've learned lately. What it's like to take time to hear my kids giggle, to see my wife smile, and to spend a little of the money I work so hard to earn. We've got to find balance and community if we want to grow healthy businesses that empower us to live bold, intentional lives. Join me for a quick 20 minute episode this week with a challenge at the end of it and then jump over to the Photographic Collective Facebook Group and share with us about the lessons you've learned. This is where it all started. In the middle of 2020 I joined into a little app called clubhouse and found myself somehow thrust on stage moderating a group of a few thousand speakers right along side these two gentleman from the UK. We've never met in person but the bond was instant because while we were speaking to photographers and with photographers we were talking about things that carry so much more depth and just camera settings and compositional rules. Over the course of the next few months the three of us became unlikely friends bonding over how important having a positive mindset can be and how critical community is. As the masks came off Clubhouse faded away and yet Igor Demba, Tom Wright, and myself - Miles Witt Boyer somehow were left with this happy memory of what it felt like to shake the industry up a bit. It was the beginning of this hunger for me to serve and give and really the precursor for this podcast that Jared Fincher and I started so it only feels right to bring these two remarkable artists and visionaries and friends onto the podcast to talk about pursuing purpose as a photographer. Igor Demba is world renowned as one of the absolute biggest and best names in the wedding industry. From being recognized as one of the world's best by Harper's Bazaar to being published and featured in every major publication globally Igor's work has connected with millions of photographers and yet his humility, his big laugh, and his genuine joy is what leads the way for him. A fun and involved dad and a passionate and present husband Igor is absolutely an example of priorities well placed. Tom Wright is a UK photographer with a background in weddings and portraiture that left to pursue commercial work several years ago. Tom has a keen eye for cinematic and beautiful sculpted light, a rare ability to story tell both for brands as well as individuals and an insatiable appetite for knowledge. He is as composed as he is brilliant, humble and approachable while being the talent behind some remarkable work. Over the last two years Igor and Tom have partnered in a number of projects the most recent being a training program that Igor is producing and that entire relationship grew from these chats. Sit back and soak up some joy in this episode from three friends scattered across the globe as we talk about how we came together, where our lives are going, and how important community, purpose, and positivity are in shaping future success as a photographer. Nadia Meli needs no introduction. She is this brilliant, bold, beautiful soul that is simultaneously deep and approachable. Her sense of compassion for the humanity around her along side an innate ability to create organic and intentional imagery rose her to the top of the industry both in Europe and globally very quickly but it really is finding "home" for her that seems like it matters most. An early adopter of a photographic style that not is so trendy and popular Nadia's work is filled with emotion and movement. As a Nikon ambassador, an educator, a podcaster, and a brand representative for a number of large names Nadia's work has been seen worldwide and yet she has this calm grace and balance to her that shows what is in my opinion the most beautiful characteristic to her as an artist - her humanity. I've had the pleasure to chat a bit with Nadia back and forth over the last year but this podcast interview was the longest we've spent in conversation and my hope is that as a listener you walk away as inspired to find intentionality and purpose and balance in your life as I was. An Italian born in Germany and now living in London pursuing editorial and fashion portraiture with a rich history and long list of awards as a wedding photographer Nadia Meli is not only an inspiration, she's a beautiful soul. He's one of the biggest names in mindset and business coaching in the photographic industry. Ben Hartley has not only elevated his own career as a photographer to continually new heights over the last ten years, he has spent most of it intentionally inviting people to join him and to be frank - his ideas are a bit radical. Showing up every day and giving free education, free mindset tips, free perspective to thousands of people in his mastermind group, managing a booming workshop and mentor training program, continuing to run what is widely recognized as one of the top wedding photography studios in the world, and being an incredibly involved dad and husband sounds like a lot, but Ben is just really hitting his stride. This guy's energy, positivity, and perspective are filled with purpose and intentionally and in this talk we chat through not only a bit of his backstory but how he found the courage to really pursue success at this level. I found Ben through the Six Figure Photography Podcast years ago and long before I ever even dreamed of being on the other end of the microphone I knew I wanted to build a relationship with this guy to better understand him. Here we are years later, close friends and I now get the opportunity to share a bit of his wisdom, his big laugh, and his joy with our listeners. Part one of this interview was one of our most listened to episodes ever. No surprise there because while it's always tempting for podcasts to focus on things like how amazing photographer's shoot or where they've been this conversation with Jonas Peterson is all about the why. It's a lesson that Jonas has learned and a process he has refined over a career filled with adventures and awards. In fact, the more acclaim Jonas receives the more he attempts to sidestep the limelight in the name of authenticity for his clients. Part One of the Jonas Peterson interview by Miles really dug into Jonas' origin story coming from the advertising world and being named one of the top photographers in the world in his first year as a full time shooter. This part of the interview focuses more into what comes next for Jonas, how he sees the future of the industry, and ways that we can all be more mindful, more intentional, more authentic photographers. For all of the time so many of us in the photography community spend educating at workshops, creating content on YOUTUBE, mentoring, shooting, training, editing, training associates, selling albums (and the list goes on and on)... The truth is that most of us can trace some part of how we do what we do back to the influence that Jonas Peterson has had on the industry. His friendships with names like Fer Juarsiti, Gabe McClintock, Jose Villa, etc are a perfect example of the level of work Jonas has created and yet for as accomplished as he is perhaps what we can learn the most from this conversation with him is how important it is to approach every client, every wedding with the humility to see them as the heros in their own story. No matter how famous Jonas has become his approach has always been to serve and love his couples and it shows perhaps most in his most recent work as he pairs Super8 video, expired Polaroid Film, and remarkable imagery into this art that is uniquely him. To see more of Jonas Peterson's work check out his website https://jonaspeterson.com/ The Photographic Collective is a creative community moderated by photographers and friends from all over the world and powered by Miles Witt Boyer.
