Sem palavras, os olhares no rosto de Pedro e João e a posição de suas mãos expressam muito, convidando os espectadores a tomar o lugar deles e a compartilhar suas emoções. A pintura retrata os dois correndo na direção do sepulcro vazio de Jesus (JOÃO 20:4). A obra-prima captura a intensidade do conflito emocional deles. Embora naquela conjuntura a fé que tinham não estivesse totalmente formada, eles corriam na direção certa, e mais tarde o Jesus ressurreto revelou-se a eles (vv.19-29). A busca dos discípulos não foi diferente da busca de pessoas por Jesus pelos séculos.
