Welcome to a new, mysteriously named, Patreon Producer N FROM CANADA HONDA'S CEO SAYS TOYOTA'S HYDROGEN CARS PLAN IS FLAWED - Toshihiro Mibe has said that Toyota's commitment and proposals towards hydrogen powertrains are flawed. He said that Honda had pursued the technology a decade ago and deemed it untenable for cars, but that hasn't resulted in the Japanese giant completely abandoning the technology. - "We have conducted research into every possibility that's out there. As for hydrogen engines, we see some quite difficult technological challenges. So, about 10 years ago, we decided this would not become mainstream," - But Honda has a more balanced view of the situation - where Mibe believes for personal mobility the electric powertrains will be the way to go. However, when it comes to the future of aircraft, Honda Motors also has a jet engines subsidiary that is working on hydrogen. The coming transformation of cars was in some ways similar to how information technology turned phones into smartphones, he added. - So far, Sony has built two EV "Vision" prototypes with a factory in Austria owned by Canadian auto parts maker Magna International (MG.TO), which also makes cars for firms including BMW , Mercedes Benz and Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) . - Other members of its Europe-based project include German auto parts maker Bosch, French automotive technology company Valeo SE and Hungarian autonomous vehicle start-up AImotive. The station was also supposed to include the automaker's 1950s restaurant, but now it's not clear if the diner is still in the plans. - Last year, we reported on construction plans revealing that Tesla was planning a large, 62-stall Supercharger V3 station at the location. When the project was approved in April 2021, Musk again said that Tesla still was aiming to build a 1950s diner at the location. - The reader noted that construction is happening fast. The location was only a dirt lot only a few weeks ago. The company has already poured concrete and installed quite a few Supercharger stalls. According to reports Giga Austin has started test production of the Y, meaning first customer cars should be ready by the end of Q1 2022. - Only a small number of Texas-built Model Ys will be ready this quarter, but it paves the way for a serious production ramp up through the rest of 2022. Crucially, Giga Austin Model Ys will be the first to feature Tesla's new structural battery pack and 4680 battery cells. The car is made by a joint venture between Geely and Lifan. Geely is also Lifan's largest shareholder. The Maple Leaf 60S is expected to be launched within February this year. - the new car uses a permanent magnet synchronous motor, with a maximum power of 136 hp (100 kW) - The 60S uses a battery pack made by Guoxuan Technology, good for an NEDC range of 415 kilometers. In addition, the 60S is “rechargeable and exchangeable.” This means that driver can charge the 60S in the standard (rechargeable). Meanwhile, the battery can be swapped (exchangeable). Two options for users: a 30-minute DC fast charging mode a 60-second battery swapping mode. - Maple Leaf 60S is primarily a car for taxi and ride-hailing companies. JAN TORE FROM EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM I understand that Tesla-owners want to have the SCs for themselves, but from a broader point of view, opening up will help speed up the transition to electric cars even more. But there are still a lot of questions to be answered before we get the whole picture. First of all, we need to know if the chargers are 100 % CCS compliant? The easy part is to get it to work; the hard thing is safely handling faults. CCS is much more than the plug and the communication. Many safety features are built into the electrical hardware of a CCS charger; do we find all of this in an SC? If not, how will take have the reasonability if something goes wrong? For the US and Canada, we need to know if they will need to have CCS plugs. Will they do this with an adaptor or adding CCS cables to the chargers. I really hope they go for the latter; adding an adaptor is adding risk and problems. I do not like adaptors, especially from a safety point of view. I hope Tesla understand this, even if Elon did indicate an adaptor solution in the Earnings Call. One added benefit of going for a separate CCS cable is that it can be longer. Tesla has until now made it easy for themself by only charging their own cars also when it comes to the layout of the charging site. It is much harder to build a good charging site when you have to consider that the cars do not have a standardized location of the charge port. After many years of deployment of charging infrastructure, I know that this significantly limits the layout, especially for larger charging sites. This will also be a problem for Europe, even if we already have CCS on the SuperChargers. Maybe Tesla needs to allocate some of the charging stalls for other brands and equip them with longer cables and more space. ADRIAN BOND If Tesla are going to allow others onto their network, I really can't see it being a free-for-all. We already know that CCS isn't always reliable due to the laughable 'standard' and many manufactures, and TESLA is the opposite. So are we going to end up with an Apple iStore type experience where you have to meet high standards before they'll let you on? It's going to take a lot before TESLA allow you into their system. PETE GLASS One word - inevitable! :) RAJEEV NARAYAN As a non-Tesla EV owner, it would be great if Tesla opened their network to all, that being said, I can understand if some Tesla owners, who have helped pay for the network, are unhappy. Personally I can see Tesla doing this in places like Norway and perhaps other places where they are given government incentives to open their network, or public charging infrastructure is already pretty advanced. As for the U.S. I cannot see them opening their supercharger network any time soon as the supercharger network remains a huge competitive advantage here. DOUG VOWLES, CANADA As a Tesla owner, I'm not happy with the prospect of having to fight off the great unwashed hordes in order to charge, but as an EV enthusiast I'm in favor of whatever increases EV adoption rates. But the whole thing would be much fairer if Tesla would put out a CCS adapter that it's current fleet could use on other networks. Currently there is only the CHAdeMO; it's always backordered and will be going away over time. I'm surprised there hasn't been more mention of CCS reciprocity in the many discussions I've heard. PETE BREMY The supercharger network was a major influence in my purchase of my Model 3. I readily admit from a selfish point of view, I am a bit disappointed in the Musk announcement. However, as an EV advocate, I think it is good news. I do think Tesla owners should be given priority, however. My suggestion how to do that is by computer. If all stalls are busy, make them only available to Tesla owners until a certain minimum number of stalls are free. I think this could be easily and automatically software controlled, and status could be displayed on the app just as it is now on Tesla vehicle screens. The app could say, for example, “Station “X” - stalls 1a, 1b, [or more if most stalls available] universally available.” Or, “Station ‘X' currently experiencing high volume, no stations universally available at this time,” as the other extreme. All info could be available on the app, even possibly with notifications sent if one station is a selected as the destination. This should keep Tesla owners happy. I don't think this should be a difficult programming solution. Hopefully this won't be an issue, and Tesla can keep ahead by installing more stations. On a side note, I honestly would be willing to consider another EV as my next car, Mach-E? Ioniq 5? …as my next car if I can access the supercharger network. I hope it doesn't blow up in Elon's face. JOSHUA PRITT Having owned a 2018 Leaf and now a Tesla Model Y with one 1400 mile road trip of experience I can give a little insight. The Leaf only had a 150 mile range so it would have to stop at almost every supercharger along a route. The Model Y with twice the Leaf's range could skip superchargers (and we did). So in the beginning when they open up the supercharger stations they will almost all have a queue. They will need to install new stations at the smaller places like the one in Ocala, FL. That one was full of teslas the whole time we were there and another took our spot as soon as we pulled out. I can imagine there would have been a much longer wait if there we're also other brand EVs in line.. BILL BURGAR as a 2016 Model S driver with free super charging I'm all in favour of it being opened up. I'm confident that Tesla will deploy sufficient charging infrastructure that we won't have unacceptable queuing. I think it's a very sensible move for Tesla to establish itself as the biggest global charging network. Using pricing to encourage people to only take what charge they need to get to their next destination is a sensible idea. We need to get away from the ICE refuelling model where people expect fill the tank to full and move to what I call the Bjorn Nyland refuelling model where you get just enough to get you to your next stop. It's far more efficient from your personal point of view and also better for everyone else as it minimises time at chargers and maximises turn over. There are occasions where you do need to get to 100% but those occasions are reducing significantly as charging is more generally available. Maybe there could be an exception for say 4 times a year, where you don't get charged a ramp up rate for the last 20%. That would limit people abusing it but would be fair for when you really do need the extra charge. MARKUS JUNGWIRTH The biggest asset and argument for driving a Tesla is gone. Everyone has immediately pictures in his mind with full Supercharging stations and long queues of waiting EVs… and Tesla Owners who are having a deep red head and kicking against their car because of they are totally frustrated… Making fotos of totally overfilled stations and sending them via Twitter to Elon by putting hundred of angry smilies behind… :-) BUT - Long term view, I guess we all will benefit from. First of all, Tesla will have a much better utilization of their network. I'm pretty sure that the network does not have a very high occupancy today. With more charging customers, they will make more money, which they will reinvest in expanding significantly the network according to the last Earnings Call. And overall it will bring down the costs. Would I buy again a Tesla by having the Supercharger Network open for all EVs? A clear YES. Without being completely Telsa blind. There are really nice and interesting EVs on the market now or coming soon ROBERT GRACE I think that opening the Tesla Supercharger network to non-Tesla's is a good idea, if done properly. It would increase the speed of EV acceptance, at least in the US, where the non-Tesla network is still lacking, especially if you aren't on interstate highways. It could be positive for the Tesla company, as they could tout this change--correctly--as a benefit to society. Further, as the years go on, and the non-Tesla network expands to the point that it is bigger than the Supercharger network, Tesla owners would feel welcome sharing the non-Tesla network. But for it to work, there are several things that might be implemented. First, there should be complete transparency as to who is using the Superchargers, for how long, and how often that people have to wait to get a charger. Second, the non-Tesla users should pay a premium--perhaps 20%-30% more than they pay at Electrify America--for the power. Finally, to avoid Tesla owners having to wait in line to charge because the Supercharger lot was full, there should be a reservation system. ANDREW ZAHRA As a Tesla owner in Australia, opening up the supercharger network. It's good for the entire EV industry to eliminate range anxiety so people won't be afraid to switch to an EV. A lot of country towns have only a single charger other than the superchargers, so you're stuffed if it is not working. Given Tesla's focus on transitioning the world to sustainable energy, it makes sense for them to help people get over the hurdle of range anxiety, whatever the brand of vehicle they are considering. I also doubt it will have a big impact on occupancy since the vast majority of EVs in Australia are Tesla's anyway. So probably a big PR win without much of a drawback. KESTER SANDBACH My perspective here is as a Tesla driver, but also as someone who is more concerned with the big picture and the long term. So from that perspective, Tesla opening up the supercharger network to others can only be a good thing for all of us. It's such a high profile infrastructure that it can only encourage more people to change to EVs. As we see Gridserve whipping the Electric Highway into shape in the UK, I really do not have any concerns over being able to get access to good quality charging. It's also interesting that on the Tesla Q2 call, Zach said that higher utilisation of the supercharger network makes it more profitable, which feeds back into more superchargers, so again it's a win win. MARK GARNETT > I think it has to be done in a way that doesn't inconvenience TESLA owners too much, and a different price might be the easiest lever to pull, say 80p per kWh. This ensures all competitor chargers continue to receive traffic and income (the last thing we want is to slow down other charger deployments), but gives the busy exec or road tripping driver the assurance of reliable/quick charging. > I would happily pay 80p (most of my consumption is still 5p but time is money once I've used up my home electrons), but most won't so avoids being overwhelmed. > > Plus keeps the nice smug factor for TESLA owners, and when the rest of us see the benefit of a reliable network, would likely help Tesla vehicle sales too. PETE GORTON No, except in dire emergency - when non-TSLA CCS2 owners should be charged 2 x or 3x the TSLA Rate. Even before I bought my 3LR, and was driving my beloved BMW i3 BEV, I felt that TSLA Chargers are paid for by a far-sighted company, and its customers. Other manufacturers could have done this, but didn't (although Ionity/EA is achieving it accidentally, due to VW ...Gate). Now that I have my Model 3, I feel that I paid extra to have access to the Supercharger network, and I'd be cross if I couldn't charge because a non-TSLA was hogging all the stalls. OLLI In the grand scheme of things any kind of sandboxing is bad for the overall EV-adoption. Optimally every EV would have the same type of plug socket on and all chargers would be open for everyone. If we're lucky that might happen within a couple of decades, but despite the periodic contents of the Twittersphere I don't expect the SuperCharger network to go open any time soon. MARK ORRICO it would be great! I am sure a phone app and a adapter would do the trick to give all EVs access to the current hardware. As for the politics of it, I will stay out of that. QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What's the ideal location for a charging port on any EV? Petrol filler caps are usually in the same location and forecourts all the look the same. Is it time we encouraged EV makers and charging suppliers to standardize socket location and charger design? Email me your thoughts and I'll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com

Earlier this year, the CEO said that Tesla is going to soon push two-factor authentication after an ’embarrassing delay,’. A few months later, Tesla has now officially released its two-factor authentication feature to owners." User Haggy online explains more: "Once you set it up, both the app and web access will need the code. But you can also add a second device. If you have multiple drivers or devices, when it asks for the code, it will ask you which of your devices you want to get the code from. That's good, but if you have more than two drivers, then you will need to set up MFA for each one with a different email address. I tried that for my wife, and was able to authorize that email address for each car, but I couldn't find a way to do it for the Powerwall. So I set it back to my email address, which is now safer to share since there's MFA. It's also a PITA the way they implemented it, because many sites require the code but let you register the computer, and then don't prompt you again for a period of time if you elect that. Tesla doesn't seem to allow that." https://electrek.co/2020/10/06/tesla-launches-two-factor-authentication-protect-customers/ TESLA MODEL S PLAID WILL USE 4680 BATTERY CELLS WITH STRUCTURAL PACK "During Battery Day, Tesla unveiled a completely new structural battery pack consisting of new 4680 lithium-ion tabless cells. And now we know that the new Model S Plaid will feature the all-new structural battery pack." says Tesmanian: "520+ miles range, 1100 horsepower, acceleration from 0-60 mph in less than 2 seconds, and top speed of 200 mph. The new type of 4680 lithium-ion cells will have five times more energy, 16% more range, and six times more power. In addition, the cells will be packaged in a new way within the car. Show #881 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 2nd September 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Welcome to a new PATREON PARTNER RAJEEV NARAYAN Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. LUCID MOTORS CLAIMS ITS FIRST EV COVERS A QUARTER MILE IN 9.9 SECONDS "One week ahead of its big reveal event, Lucid Motors is ready to brag about how fast its all-electric luxury sedan is. In a video shared today, Lucid Motors shows its Lucid Air covering a quarter mile of racetrack in just 9.9 seconds. According to the company, the EV is “the world’s quickest production sedan.”" writes Engadget: "Lucid Air’s 1,080-horsepower powertrain allows the vehicle to reach 60 MPH in under 2.5 seconds, Autoblog points out. Lucid explained today that the EV comes with two electric drive units. Each packs over 650 horsepower and is small enough to fit inside a standard airplane carry-on." https://www.engadget.com/lucid-motors-air-ev-quarter-mile-99-seconds-142151709.html NISSAN DELIVERED ITS 500,000TH LEAF "Nissan celebrates today the delivery of 500,000th LEAF (since December 2010) to a customer in Norway - one of the biggest markets for the LEAF. Since there is no press release yet, let's take a look at Bjorn Nyland's report. With about 44,000 sales, Norway took almost 9% of the total LEAF volume, and we are aware that thousands of more used LEAFs were imported to Norway, so there might now be well over 10% of all LEAFs ever made located somewhere in Norway." says InsideEVs: "Nissan LEAF was the all-time #1 for a long time, even through 2019/2020, when LEAF was at about 450,000. Then, Model 3 overtook LEAF and it will not change, as the Model 3 is selling at a level higher" https://insideevs.com/news/442006/nissan-leaf-500000th-delivered TESLA’S BATTERY STRATEGY HAS “NO ADVANTAGE,” FORD CEO SAYS "Tesla’s battery strategy will not be adopted by legacy automotive company Ford, because Jim Hackett, the company’s CEO, says there is “no advantage” in migrating capital into owning a cell manufacturing facility. During Ford’s Q2 2020 Earnings Call in late July, Morgan Stanley’s Adam Jonas asked about the company’s strategy to produce EV batteries in-house, as opposed to sourcing the cells from third-party companies like Panasonic and LG Chem." picks up TEslarati: "Hackett, who elected to retire from his post as head of Ford earlier this year, stated that his team did a “deep dive” on whether it was advantageous to create its own battery cells. It proved not to be advantageous for Ford. Instead, the company will continue to go the path that it is now, which requires sourcing batteries from third-party suppliers instead of researching and improving on cells within the company’s facilities across the world." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-battery-strategy-ford-no-advantage/ TESLA (TSLA) ANNOUNCES $5 BILLION CAPITAL RAISE "Tesla (TSLA) today announced a $5 billion capital raise to take advantage of the stock price’s meteoric rise. While Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously said that the company wasn’t interested in a new capital raise as it believed it was capable to finance its ambitious growth through its operations, it looks like they couldn’t resist following the stock price increase" reports Electrek today: "It’s Tesla’s second capital raise in 2020. The automaker raised $2 billion in February. Like with the last capital raise, Tesla doesn’t specify any use of the proceed other than “strengthening the balance sheet”. The sale of $5 billion new shares is going to put some pressure on the incredible run of Tesla’s stock price over the last month and it is already feeling the effect." https://electrek.co/2020/09/01/tesla-tsla-5-billion-capital-raise/ NEW VOLKSWAGEN ID 3: FIRST EXAMPLES OF EV HIT BRITISH SHORES "Volkswagen's pivotal EV, the ID 3, has finally reached British shores as the first customer examples roll off the ship at Grimsby port. Earmarked for customers that pre-booked First Edition examples earlier this year, the fully-loaded models will be delivered over the next month. Volkswagen claims that the entire production and delivery process is carbon neutral, even including the shipping" says James Atwood at Autocar: "The limited-run First Edition models are priced from £38,880 and were offered only to people who previously placed a £750 deposit. First Edition versions of the ID 3 will feature the mid-size 'Pro' battery offering a claimed range of 260 miles. General sales of the ID 3 are due to begin in the UK in the coming weeks, and the model will eventually be offered in seven main variants, with three different battery capacities and two power outputs. The first machines that have arrived in Britain will be without some of the App Connect, but those who take delivery of them will be given membership of a 'First Movers' club, which will include an eventual software update to install the software. Those leasing cars also won't pay any rates for the first three months." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-volkswagen-id-3-first-examples-ev-hit-british-shores EVS AND HYBRIDS GET AN EXTENSION TO MEET US NOISE-MAKING REQUIREMENTS " Automakers will get at least six more months to meet new federal requirements for noise-making devices on electric cars and hybrids, Reuters reported Friday. The extension is being granted due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The so-called "quiet car" rule requires electrified vehicles to emit noises at speeds up to 18.6 mph as a warning to pedestrians and cyclists. Lack of exhaust noise makes cars harder to hear at these speeds, but tire noise, wind buffeting, and other sounds pick up at higher speeds, regulators have said." says Green Car Repotrs. https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1129448_evs-and-hybrids-get-an-extension-to-meet-us-noise-making-requirements VOLKSWAGEN ID.R ELECTRIC RACE CAR RETURNS TO GOODWOOD Welcome back, Volkswagen ID.R! 411 days after the record-breaking drive up Tianmen Mountain in China, the fully-electric race car returns to action at Goodwood SpeedWeek (16.–18.10.2020). After the coronavirus pandemic caused the cancellation of both the Goodwood Festival of Speed (FoS) and the Goodwood Revival, the organisers have launched a new event: Goodwood SpeedWeek, at which historic race cars meet present vehicles and visions of the future. As the three-day automotive festival will take place behind closed doors, there will be extensive digital reporting, including multiple livestreams. Having taken victory at the Festival of Speed for the past two years with the 500-kW (680-PS) ID.R, Volkswagen Motorsport travels to the south of England with a new challenge: SpeedWeek is not taking place on Goodwood Hill, but at the 3.809-kilometre Goodwood Motor Circuit. NORWAY IN AUGUST — OVER 70% EV MARKET SHARE AND HEADING HIGHER "Clean transport transition leader Norway hit a huge 70.2% plugin passenger vehicle market share in August, up from 49% a year ago. Pure battery electrics alone took 53% of the market. September is already showing signs of being a record breaking month with the Tesla Model 3, VW ID.3, and Polestar 2 all showing up in volume." according to Dr Max Holland in CleanTechnica: "The top selling BEVs in August were the mostly the recent usual suspects, but the Polestar 2 started it’s deliveries in earnest, and jumped in to a very creditable #4 spot. The Mercedes Benz EQC has showed up in decent numbers again in August, as it did in July" https://cleantechnica.com/2020/09/02/norway-in-august-over-70-ev-market-share-and-heading-higher/ You can listen to all 880 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Show #686 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 3rd February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to three new Patrons! A new PRODUCER ROB SHAW A new PRODUCER WESLEY ELLIS A new PRODUCER LEO KUYUNZHI And an even bigger ‘thank you’ to those who have ended their support for now, Barry Peniston and Zack Hurst from EV-Resource.com HUMMER ELECTRIC PICKUP TRUCK: EVERYTHING WE KNOW "The GMC Hummer EV electric pickup truck will officially debut this May, but we already have a fair amount of info on the electric truck. Here are the details released thus far on what's likely to be General Motors' first production electric truck." says Eric at InsideEVs: "GMC says that it will fully debut the Hummer electric pickup truck on May 20, 2020. Not all specs are known though. The specs that GMC did release include: 1,000 HP, 11,500 pound-feet of torque, 0 to 60 in 3 seconds. The first deliveries of the Hummer electric pickup truck are set for Fall 2021. This is likely a moving timeline though, as electric vehicle production often seems to get tied up with some sort of constraints or setbacks." https://insideevs.com/reviews/396368/hummer-electric-truck-specs-debut/ RENAULT ZOE CURRENT FASTEST SELLING USED CAR The Renault ZOE has retained its title as the fastest selling used car in the UK, with the 2016 variant taking the top spot in the first review of the Auto Trader Fastest Selling Index of the year. The result adds further weight to the prediction from automotive analysts that 2020 is set to be the year of the electric car. The latest figures showed that the French city car has the potential to leave forecourts in just 25 days. RENAULT ZOE HAD RECORD SALES IN JANUARY "Last month in France the Renault ZOE was the third best selling car with 5.331 units delivered, only behind the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) cars PEUGEOT 208 and Renault Clio." reports Pedro at PushEVs: "To the 5.331 units sold to private buyers, we can add 140 more that were sold to companies, making a total of 5.471 new Renault ZOE units sold in France last month. Last year Renault sold more than 46.000 units of the ZOE worldwide, but didn’t reach the full production capacity of 60.000 units. However, due to more stricter EU emission standards starting this year, Renault expects to incrementally increase annual production capacity until reaching 120.000 units by 2022" Also 2,537 Peugeot e-208's we sold (1,187 demo cars and 732 private sales), that's 1 in 4 Peugeot 208's. Of the 5,331 Zoe's sold in January, 2,803 were to private buyers. https://pushevs.com/2020/02/03/renault-zoe-record-sales-in-january/ TESLA MODEL S PLAID VERSUS PORSCHE TAYCAN: MATCHUP EXPECTED NEXT WEEK "Rumors suggest that the Tesla Model S Plaid will go up against the Porsche Taycan as soon as next week. Motor Trend will conduct the testing of the matchup we've all been waiting for. Will the hottest Tesla ever come out on top? Or will it be the Taycan that triumphs?" says InsideEVs: "The specs for the Plaid version of the Model S are unknown, but what we do know is that Tesla will actually offer this hot Model S to the public starting in October or November 2020. Ahead of that, it seems Tesla wants to show just how capable the car is and, as such, is sending one to Motor Trend to pit it up against the Taycan (presumably the Turbo S variant). Tesla says the Plaid Model S will get a bigger battery than the other versions of the Model S, so perhaps its range will still be quite high." I think the NORDSCHLEIFE reopens on Saturday 7th March. That's not to say it couldn't be booked for a special event but it's currently clsoed. HOW TO ACTIVATE TESLA DYNO MODE "Tesla Dyno Mode can be activated in three easy steps for owners looking to test performance of their all-electric vehicle on a dynamometer and in a controlled setting. Tesla owner and Drag Times YouTuber Brooks Weisblat posted a video on how to turn on the Dyno Mode on a Model 3 and see how the secret mode affected the car’s performance." reports Teslarati: "With the Dyno Mode on the vehicle’s traction control is disabled, stability control is disabled, as well as automatic emergency braking." https://www.teslarati.com/how-to-activate-tesla-dyno-mode-3-steps/ Bjorn Nyland: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vx_MR9fjmjw GLOBAL EV SALES FOR 2019 NOW IN: TESLA MODEL 3 TOTALLY DOMINATED According to the EV Sales Blog, some over 279,000 plug-in cars were sold in December, 4% less than a year ago. While the last couple of months were challenging due to significant drops in China, the overall result for 2019 is positive: almost 2,210,000 (up 10% year-over-year). Moreover, the average plug-in market share improved from 2.1% to 2.5% (or 1 in 40 new cars). Most of the volume comes from all-electric cars (74%!), which also improved its position by 5% year-over-year, while plug-in hybrids (26%) declined. The Tesla Model 3 set new all-time sales records: 53,742 for a single month and over 300,000 for the year (300,885 according to Tesla). The second-best last year (111,047), with also a personal monthly record of 21,963, is the BAIC EU-Series - the first non-Tesla model to exceed 20,000 in a single month." https://insideevs.com/news/396177/global-ev-sales-december-2019/ PORSCHE TAYCAN NOW AVAILABLE WITH EXCLUSIVE MANUFAKTUR OPTIONS "As if Porsche didn't already offer enough options for the new electric Taycan, it's now applied the Exclusive Manufaktur treatment as it does with its more iconic petrol-powered models. New options can be had both inside and out, helping buyers to make their Taycan stand out without a sports exhaust system specify. " writes evo.co.uk: "The most significant option of the 90 available is the new Sport Design package, available in either gloss black, or carbon fibre. The package tweaks both front and rear bumpers for a more aggressive look, and will cost up to £3282 for the carbon fibre option on the range-topping Taycan Turbo S. If you’d like to see your initials every time you step in or out of your Taycan, £1900 will afford you customised, carbon fibre sill plates (also available in aluminium for marginally less). Although power increases have been offered for previous models, none are yet to be launched for the all-electric Taycan. With its over-the-air updates, Tesla has proven that EVs can see such upgrades, however, so perhaps it’s something we might see in time." https://www.evo.co.uk/saloons/202188/porsche-taycan-now-available-with-exclusive-manufaktur-options WRIGHT ELECTRIC WORKS ON LARGE ELECTRIC PASSENGER PLANE "The electric aircraft start-up Wright Electric has started to develop the electric propulsion system for a 186-seat electric aircraft called Wright 1. Specifically, this involves a 1.5 MW electric motor and a 3-kilovolt inverter." reports electrive.com: "Designs haven’t been finalised, but the Wright 1 airliner will use distributed electric propulsion. The company is now starting to design and test about a dozen of the 1.5-megawatt motors. Wright is planning initial ground tests for 2021 and initial flight tests for 2023. The company expects Wright 1 to be ready for regular operation in 2030." https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/02/wright-electric-works-on-large-electric-passenger-plane/ https://www.aviationtoday.com/2020/01/30/wright-electric-begins-1-5-mw-engine-development-program-186-seat-commercial-airliner/ TESLA NOW COVERS DEGRADATION IN MODEL S/X WARRANTY "Tesla has updated their warranty coverage for Model S and X cars, and it’s a mixed bag for owners. The warranty now explicitly covers battery degradation and capacity loss, guaranteeing that the battery will retain 70% capacity through the warranty period. But Tesla also removed their famous “infinite mile warranty” for battery and drive unit and replaced it with a limit of 150,000 miles — still plenty high for most (but not all) scenarios, but not “infinite.”" reports Electrek today: "Tesla explicitly stated that “changes to the performance of the battery due to software updates are NOT covered” under warranty." https://electrek.co/2020/02/02/tesla-model-s-x-warranty-70-capacity-150k-mile/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… On a scale on 1-10, (1 being not at all, 10 being completely) how much does/did environment come into your love of EVs? Show #500 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 14th June 2019. For show 500 I welcome two new Patreon supporters. New PRODUCER BILL CLISHAM and new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER ROB HERMANS. "I’ve been listening to your excellent podcast for a few months and it’s better than sliced bread! I’ve learned SO much and really feel in touch with all of the most recent developments in EV land, thanks to you. With your 500th episode coming up, I have decided to become a patron and help you keep up this amazing effort. More power (clean, electric power!) to you, my friend!" My weekend watch recommendation is Bjorn Nyland taking his Model 3 Performance on the German Autobahn at 233kmh. RHD TESLA MODEL 3'S ARRIVE IN UK From R Symons: "Trucks now heading from Dover to London with the first RHD’s for delivery next week. Next Thursday 20/06/19 is D day for my model 3 performance! First UK batch must have been on Grand Dahlia." The white option for interior is back in the design studio. And finally the least important part of the show...the Supercharger Route Planner still only gives you option to plan a route for a Model S or X. ELECTRIC VEHICLES HAVE SAVED 3.6 BILLION LITRES OF FUEL IN THE US The transition to electric vehicles has saved 3.6 billion litres of fuel in the US, with a third of that saved in 2018 alone, new figures from the US Department of Energy have shown." reports Bridie for driven.io: "With more than 1.2 million light plug-in (PHEV) and battery electric vehicles (BEV) now sold in the US alone, amounting to 25 billion miles (40 billion kilometres) driven by PHEVs and BEVs since 2010, fuel consumption by light vehicles has been reduced by 0.23 per cent, the report says. Electric vehicles are still more efficient, even when powered by coal-sourced electricity. But even so, the source of that electricity may bear consideration. In California, 40 per cent of electricity generation is consumed by the transport sector, according to the EIA using data from 2017 – making it the biggest consumer of electricity." https://thedriven.io/2019/06/14/electric-vehicles-have-saved-3-6-billion-litres-of-fuel-in-the-us/ PORSCHE TAYCAN SPIED DURING TIRE-SCREECHING TEST AT THE 'RING More video online of the Porsche Taycan: "Confirmed for a September reveal, the company’s very first EV has been caught for the umpteenth time at the Nürburgring flaunting those hilarious “exhausts” to prove the Germans do have a sense of humor." writes Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com: "You might be tempted to say the zero-emissions sedan was not wearing any camouflage, but as it approaches a roundabout at the 1:11 mark, we can see it had quite a lot of black tape on the body and also stickers masking the lights. Later in the video, around the 4:15 mark, the prototype is seen in traffic passing by a gas station to reveal its deceiving body-colored camouflage also used by other future members of the Volkswagen Group family." https://www.motor1.com/news/354516/porsche-taycan-spy-video-nurburgring/ FCA SIGNS PARTNERSHIPS WITH ENEL X AND ENGIE GROUP Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has signed two agreements for new e-Mobility solutions to support the production and distribution of the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and full-electric (BEV) models rolling out as part of the Group’s 2018-2022 business plan. Through these agreements, FCA dealers will be able to offer innovative charging solutions and services to retail and business customers. This initiative also includes research and testing of new technologies to reduce the total cost of ownership of electrified vehicles. Mike Manley, Chief Executive Officer, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles said: “These partnerships build on the e-mobility strategy we announced last year as part of our five-year business plan We are assembling an eco-system of partners, products and services across multiple markets to meet and exceed the rapidly evolving expectations of our customers for electrified vehicles.” The primary objective of the two partnerships is to offer private and public charging solutions to support sales of FCA’s forthcoming electric vehicle line-up including the soon-to-be-launched Fiat 5oo BEV and Jeep Renegade PHEV. . This includes offering customers the option of installing a home charging point (or “wallbox”) suited to their specific requirements, including charging optimization and smart management. Each partner will support FCA customers with the preliminary feasibility assessment and installation of the wallbox, as well as ongoing management and maintenance throughout the life of the customer vehicle and wallbox. In addition to home charging points, customers will also be offered cost-efficient and convenient access to public charging solutions. FCA and its partners will collaborate on the development of apps that will enable customers to locate public charging points, as well as book and pay for charging services via their vehicle’s integrated connectivity capability. 2019 JAGUAR I-PACE EV400 HSE REVIEW Brandon Turkus at Motor1 has driven the Jaguar I-PACE and written his review: "With 394 horsepower and 512 pound-feet of torque, the I-Pace’s twin electric motors sit neatly between the E-Tron (355 hp and 414 lb-ft of torque, boosted to 402 hp and 490 lb-ft in Boost Mode) and EQC (402 hp and 561 lb-ft). And yet, the Jag is quicker than both its German rivals, taking just 4.5 seconds to hit 60 compared to 5.5 in the Audi and 4.8 in the EQC. The way the Jag gets to that speed, though, is very similar to the Germans. This is an electric car, and its two motors dole out torque-rich performance in big, immediately available lumps. Part of that is down to the single-speed automatic transmission. It’s quick to engage, so there’s hardly any waiting while the torque gets to the ground. But the I-Pace’s handling differs from its rivals. This is a charming dance partner, tipping the scales at a light (for the segment) 4,784 pounds. Its lower center of gravity – the I-Pace is only 61.3 inches tall, over two inches lower than the next closest rival, the 63.9-inch EQC – and more aggressive air suspension deliver a sharper, flatter handling character. You want to toss the I-Pace around and have some fun with it; take advantage of the quick steering and the darty way it can change directions. It’s quite a change of pace from taller, heavier rivals that focus on ride comfort." https://www.motor1.com/reviews/354870/2019-jaguar-i-pace-ev400-hse-review/ VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R RETURNS TO GOODWOOD WITH SPECIAL SPRINT VERSION "Volkswagen announced the return of the I.D. R to the Goodwood Festival of Speed (4 to 7 July) to defend its record EV time of 43.86 seconds from 2018." says InsideEVs.com: "While a year ago the German manufacturer simply used the same technical configuration as at the much longer and more demanding Pikes Peak hill climb, this year Volkswagen developed a special sprint version of the I.D. R. It will be equipped with smaller and lighter, high-power battery pack just for the 1.86-kilometer route, which gives hope to not only improve the record but maybe set an all-time record for the track (41.6 by Nick Heidfeld in McLaren MP4/13 Formula One car in 1999)." https://insideevs.com/news/354805/volkswagen-id-r-returns-goodwood-sprint-version/ FUEL CELL FERRY WATER GO ROUND FINDS FLEET INVESTMENT "The hydrogen ferry Water Go Round currently under construction in the US has found new funding for setting up an entire fleet. SW/TCH Maritime, an investment platform for all kinds of electric maritime vessels is now on board." says electrive.com: "A first unit of the 84-passenger ferry powered by fuel cells is currently under construction at the Bay Ship & Yacht shipyard in California and set for completion this September. The next step will be a three-month trial in the San Francisco Bay, also to act as a flagship for SW/TCH’s future fleet. The tanks will hold up to 264 kg of hydrogen, which is enough to run the ferry for two days straight, according to the manufacturers. For refilling the tanks, SW/TCH is partnering with Clean Marine Energy (CME) to develop electric charging and hydrogen fueling infrastructure onshore." https://www.electrive.com/2019/06/13/fuel-cell-ferry-water-go-round-finds-fleet-investment/ TESLA IS DELIVERING 1,000 CARS A DAY EN ROUTE TO RECORD QUARTER "Electrek has learned that Tesla is currently delivering cars at a rate of approximately 1,000 a day. As we reported earlier this month, Tesla aims to deliver between 33,000 and 36,000 vehicles in June in North America to break its delivery record." says Fred Lambert: "According to sources familiar with the matter, Tesla has been delivering cars at a rate of approximately 1,000 a day in North America so far this month. Furthermore, there are almost 7,000 more deliveries planned over the next 7 days and even more last-minute deliveries are expected over the last week of the quarter as buyers try to get deliveries before the now $3,750 federal tax credit on Tesla vehicles goes down again. It’s important to keep in mind that even if Tesla doesn’t achieve this record, they are still delivering all-electric vehicles at a higher pace than any other automaker at this point. By a huge margin. In North America, Tesla is delivering more EVs in 3 days than GM is delivering in a whole month." https://electrek.co/2019/06/14/tesla-delivering-1000-cars-day-record-quarter/ HYUNDAI KONA EV #1 IN NETHERLANDS IN MAY "The Dutch plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market had another positive month in May, with 2,688 plug-in vehicle registrations — up 193% year over year (YoY). That translated into a PEV share of 7.3% on the broader auto market. The year-to-date (YTD) count is now up to 15,537 units, with the 2019 PEV share at 8.3%, well above the 6% of last year." reports CleanTechnica: "If we only consider fully electric vehicles (BEVs), the EV share last month was 6.3%, with the 2019 share being 7%. A bit surprisingly, the VW e-Golf was 4th, with 227 units, a meritable performance for a model that is less than a year from being replaced by the much more competitive VW ID.3. I guess name recognition is a strong point here." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/14/hyundai-kona-ev-1-in-netherlands-in-may-tesla-model-3-still-1-in-2019/ RIVIAN'S USED BATTERIES WILL HELP SUPPORT "Now, we have an idea of what Rivian wants to do with its batteries once they're no longer usable in its vehicles." says Roadshow by CNET: "Rivian announced this week that it has teamed up with the Honnold Foundation, which funds solar power initiatives, for a future project that will use Rivian's "second-life" batteries, also known as a used EV battery that's already done its time in an electric vehicle. The project will see these batteries as gateways to energy independence and renewable power generation, and it'll kick off in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico. Using the 135-kilowatt-hour battery packs from its development vehicles, Rivian will take these batteries and move them into small modules that can collect power from solar panels or other sources, reducing reliance on the grid." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/rivian-used-batteries-energy-independence-project/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Welcome to episode one of EV Musings. A podcast about EVs and things that are interesting to EV owners (and potential owners) The podcast is created by Gary Comerford and Simon Roe, two UK-based EV owners (but most of what they talk about applies everywhere EVs are currently being driven.) In this show we discuss those annoying myths that always seem to get banded about when people try to persuade you that an EV is not the right thing to buy. We'll be covering things such as : Where does the energy come from to fuel them? The batteries need replacing regularly and cost a fortune, right? The batteries need precious minerals to be mined to create them don't they? You can't drive them in the rain! .. plus others that always seem to be thrown around on comment section and Twitter/Facebook posts. NISSAN UPDATES LEAF SOFTWARE FOR ALL AFTER #RAPIDGATE First up a public service announcement, following all of Nissans troubles over the last 12months. We first heard about a software fix from Bjorn Nyland who tested a newer LEAF 40, and it took a higher charge speed whilst being pretty hot. He raised questions over the long term health of the battery, but it was an anecdotal story of someone contacting their dealer for the fix, and being turned away which concerned me. If I were Nissan I would be on a PR offensive to superserve my customers. Well now we have more details on the story thanks to Electrive.com: "Nissan is now offering a software update for Leaf models with a 40 kWh battery to correct the significant reduction of the DC charging power that occurred under the so-called Rapidgate." says an article today: "A Nissan spokesman told electrive that they would offer the for all Leaf models produced between 8 December 2017 and 9 May 2018. Electric vehicles with a later production date already have the current software version." I was never able to test it, so i never commented on it at the time, despite a fair few complaints and people saying I was ignoring it because I was in Nissan's pocket. I like to think of it as not defaming a company for something I had no personal proof over, but hey, you feel free to get yourself sued. However as time went on there was a general reluctance from Nissan to hold their hands up and say it was a fault, but instead they recognised the issue and it was expected behiviour. However Electrive did test it themselves: "Our editors put this to the test and could confirm the problem. According to the Japanese carmaker, the Leaf has “safety precautions” to protect the battery during repeated rapid charging processes. These are important for the service life of the powerpack, not least due to a lack of thermal management." And of course the Nissan warranty is unaffected. Is that good enough, LEAF drivers? What else would Nissan realistically do? Should the LEAF be thought of a town car, with very occasional long drives, if this problem rears up on the 62kWh car? And if so, why carry around such a heavy battery on a town car, when a lighter car would be more efficient? https://www.electrive.com/2019/01/22/nissan-updates-leaf-software-after-rapidgate/ TOYOTA AND PANASONIC CONFIRM JV FOR EV BATTERIES "Toyota Motor Corp and Panasonic Corp said on Tuesday they will launch a joint venture next year to make electric vehicle (EV) batteries, leveraging the heft of one of the world’s largest automakers and battery makers to expand their EV push." confirmed Reurters today: "Toyota will own 51 percent of the joint venture, and Panasonic the rest, the two companies said in a joint statement, confirming previous reports." https://www.reuters.com/article/toyota-panasonic/toyota-panasonic-announce-jv-for-ev-batteries-idUST9N1CC01D PEUGEOT 2008 COMING AS A FULL EV "Peugeot will follow up the imminent launch of its new 208 supermini with a new 2008 crossover, due to be revealed in the autumn." reports Autocar: "The most significant change brought about by the new platform is that Peugeot will offer the 2008 as a fully electric model for the first time. Expected to be launched in early 2020, not long after the conventional petrol and diesel variants, the electric version follows on from the platform-sharing 208 and will adapt that car's electric motor and lithium ion battery pack. Details of the electric 2008's range and performance haven't yet been revealed." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-peugeot-2008-be-offered-all-electric-variant PEUGEOT WARNS UK DEALERS TO READY FOR EV REVOLUTION "Peugeot has told its UK dealer network to prepare themselves for the coming EV revolution. During its 2019 National Dealer Conference at the NEC in Birmingham, the carmaker spelled out how its sees the growth of EV adoption will change the face of dealership service required by consumers." according to today's report by Paul Myles for TU Automotive: "David Peel, managing director of Peugeot UK, told dealers to ‘be prepared’ for the energy transition especially with the brand committing to electrifying its entire product range over the next five years." https://www.tu-auto.com/peugeot-warns-uk-dealers-to-ready-for-ev-revolution/ TESLA SAYS IT RECEIVED BATTERY QUOTES FROM LISHEN BUT NO DEAL AGREED "Tesla Inc said on Tuesday it had received quotes from Tianjin Lishen to supply batteries for its new Shanghai electric car factory but had not signed any agreement with the Chinese firm." according to Business Report: "Reuters earlier on Tuesday reported, citing two sources with direct knowledge of the matter, that Tesla and Lishen had signed a preliminary agreement and were working on the details." https://www.iol.co.za/business-report/international/tesla-says-it-received-battery-quotes-from-lishen-but-no-deal-agreed-18905698 HONDA TEASES NEW EV PROTOTYPE AHEAD OF GENEVA DEBUT Yesterday I talked how the Honda Urban EV won the Readers Vote for the What Car? Car Of The Year Awards, despite still being a prototype. Well today, "Honda confirms the rumors about the world premiere of a new EV prototype at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. The Japanese manufacturer revealed a design sketch of the prototype and said that the production version will go on sale later this year." https://insideevs.com/honda-teases-new-ev-prototype/amp/ VW: SMALL ELECTRIC CARS MAY BE UNAFFORDABLE FOR SOME This is a strange story next. Let me give you basics and we'll work out what it means. "The move to electric vehicles will make cars significantly more expensive, meaning they may become unaffordable for people on low incomes in the future, the chairman of Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) said in an interview published on Sunday." according to Reuters. Hans-Dieter Poetsch told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper: "We have the clear goal of making electromobility accessible to a broad section of the population, that is to make it affordable. The current price level cannot stay the same if these cars are equipped with electric motors. Therefore, it will inevitably lead to significant price increases in the small car segment.” And then: "Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess warned that the European Union’s proposed emissions target for 2030 is too demanding and the resulting push to EVs could make motoring too expensive for some consumers." which was picked up by Automotive News Europe: "Diess said VW Group will be able to comply with the EU's average fleet carbon dioxide emissions of around 60 grams per km by 2030 by boosting sales of its full-electric cars to between 45 percent to 50 percent of the group's total volume. But he warned: "I am not sure how many customers could afford it." As examples, Diess said the retail price of a VW Up minicar that could rise in price by about 3,500 euros to 14,500 euros to be compliant with the 2030 emissions target. The price for the small Polo model could rise by 4,000 euros, he said." So this is where I'm at a loss. Europe has very stringent emissions rules coming in for 2030, it's based on the total fleet of cars you sell and it's CO2 they're measuring. VW say they're going to be an electgric leader and will be making enough EVs by then not be affected by the rules. The first point about EVs being more expensive than piston cars is something you can't comment on unless you have access to VW finances. But a 40kWh pack would add $4,000 dollars when prices come down to $100/kWh. So for a VW Up that size battery would be overkill. Maybe add $1,000 dollars for the motor and ancillaries, so you start at $5,000 and have to build the car on top of that. But this is by 2030 - and remember can't compare 100 year old piston technology to battery technology, in the last 10 years alone the cost of battery's has come down from roughly $1,000 to $150 per kWh. Imagine what tech will be like in 11 years! Remember CEO's don't say things like this for no reason, they have a game plan. And when you're so high up the food chain, pretty much every public comment you make will be politically driven to influence someone. As for the comment that emissions regulations will mean small cars get more expensive to meet those demands. But hang on, aren't we always being told VW will make so many EVs by 2030, the way I see it, that will easily offset the total fleet emissions. So sell a bunch of EVs and which allows you to keep selling the last few piston cars. Final thought – 11 years ago you had never heard of Tesla. The automotive industry relies on stability, and to them it’s natural to talk with certainty about 2030. At best it’s a projection, at worst it’s fantasy guesswork. Truth is, nobody knows what the car industry will be like 2030 and which incumbents have long since gone bust because they didn’t move to EV quick enough. https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-volkswagen-electric-vehicles/small-electric-cars-may-be-unaffordable-for-some-vw-chairman-to-newspaper-idUKKCN1PE0EJ https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vws-diess-warns-emissions-push-could-make-cars-too-expensive-some-consumers INNOGY EMOBILITY UK APPOINTS NISSAN’S KARL ANDERS AS MANAGING DIRECTOR "Former Nissan Fleet national EV manager Karl Anders has been appointed as managing director of innogy eMobility UK." says FleetNews: "Innogy eMobility UK acts as a technology and service provider with an eMobility hardware and software portfolio. Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Friday 27th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. FRIDAY FACTS "Chinas Electric Buses Are Hurting the Oil Industry to the tune of About 279,000 barrels of fuel a day and adds 9500 zero emision #EV buses every 5 weeks." From Greg Wester @gwestr "Tesla lets software engineers on the factory floor to join the line and turn wrenches so they can automate the work and retool the line for speed" UPDATE ON KONA BATTERY CHARGING "Thanks for mentioning my recent Kona article on cleantechnica. The charging power info that you were not confident about is actually referenced (link through) in the article at the point where I make the 80 kW statement". ...and my reply: "Hi Max,I think the confusion here is on the Hyundai press materials it says “when connected to a 100kW charger”. I wonder if everyone has seen that, assumed that’s the charge rate, and ran with it? If you search for “Hyundai Kona EV 100kW” which is what I did before that show, you get countless articles all saying it has 100kW charge speed. And if you want the 2hour video review from Bjorn Nyland, who had one from Hyundai for a test, he says he’s been told it will charge up to 100kW. So I think I’ve just heard that number a lot from people who also know a lot about it. But saying all that, I agree that you (and John) are working from the most reliable ‘first hand’ information. i.e. the engineers. I was wrong to trust those other sources. I’ve attached the datasheet from Hyundai North America which confirms the pack is 356v nominal. If it’s using the same LG Chem pack as the Bolt, the consensus seems to be a configuration of 3.7V * 60Ah * 288 cells = 64kWh and 3.7V * 96 cell triplets = 355.2V. If the engineers were being specific with max current of 200amps, at that voltage, that’s 71.6kW which is in the ball park of the IONIQ. Also I have a feeling the maximum current you can put through the CCS connector is 200A. JAGUAR DELAYS SOME I-PACE ALL-ELECTRIC SUV DELIVERIES Electrek says they have heard from some disappointed owners that some are seeing their deliveries being pushed back by several months. Fred Lambert says: "Dealers say it is due to “manufacturing issues” while Jaguar says it is “prioritizing” orders." "We contacted Jaguar over the issue and the automaker says that it still plans for customer production to start “late this summer”, but it confirmed that some customers are experiencing delays due to “prioritization”: “In some instances individual customers may have been informed of a delay regarding their order. This will be due to prioritisation of market specific orders to best meet the exceptional demand.”" "A source familiar with the matter told Electrek that Jaguar’s supply of Matrix LED headlights are actually limited and the company might be pushing orders of non-First Edition vehicles in order to focus on the First Edition vehicles which need to be 2019 model year." https://electrek.co/2018/07/26/jaguar-i-pace-delay/ EV CONNECT CLOSES $8-MILLION FINANCING ROUND "EV Connect, a provider of charging solutions including a cloud-based network management platform, has closed an $8-million financing round, led by Ecosystem Integrity Fund" reports Charged EVs: "The company will use the new funds to accelerate the deployment of its EV Cloud management platform in the US, advance its integration with utility grid systems and expand into new global markets." https://chargedevs.com/newswire/ev-connect-closes-8-million-financing-round/ MITSUBISHI OUTLANDERS ARRIVE IN THE UK In preparation for the launch of the new 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which goes on sale in the UK on August 1, the first shipment of vehicles has arrived in the UK at Bristol’s Royal Portbury Docks, with more shipments set to dock in the following weeks" according to Electric Cars Report: "The new 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been engineered to meet the latest emissions regulations and comfortably qualifies for the government plug-in car grant thanks to its WLTP emissions of 46g/km and EV range of 28 miles, while also attracting the lowest possible BIK rate of 13 percent." The first batch of 200 will soon be followed by another 2000. https://electriccarsreport.com/2018/07/first-shipment-of-2019-mitsubishi-outlander-phev-arrives-in-the-uk/ DAIMLER TO BUILD BATTERY FACTORIES IN SINDELFINGEN, UNTERTUERKHEIM "Daimler AG on Wednesday said it will add battery manufacturing capabilities to its Mercedes-Benz plants in Sindelfingen and Untertuerkheim, as the carmaker seeks to transition from combustion to electric cars." reports an Autoblog article: "The battery deal is part of a 1.5 billion euro ($1.75 billion) transformation plan to retool Mercedes-Benz plants to build zero-emission and autonomous vehicles, the carmaker said." https://www.autoblog.com/2018/07/25/daimler-battery-factory-sindelfingen-untertuerkheim-germany/?guccounter=1 BARBADOS EMBRACES EVS Crippled with public debt and dogged by rising oil prices, the island's new government wants to make its bus network electric, and eventually switch all government transport too." reports Reuters: "Increased state investment in electric buses would help upgrade transport systems, while cutting climate-changing emissions and paving the way for consumers to follow. Plug-in vehicles could also "piggy-back" on a push to inject more power into the grid from renewables like solar, wind and hydro. Costs are high, however, and on some islands, import duties for electric vehicles are higher than on combustion-engine cars." COMMUNITY Battery On Board Stickers! Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Thursday 26th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. Firstly, Sergio Marchionne has passed away following complications after shoulder surgery. The 66 year old had been admitted to Zurich University Hospital for a routine procedure but passed away on Wednesday morning. The tribute from EVO: “Marchionne joined Fiat in 2003 when the ailing Italian carmaker was on the verge of bankruptcy after posting a loss of €6 billion. Within two years he had turned the loss into a profit. In 2009 he orchestrated the deal to take control of the Chrysler, saving it from bankruptcy and giving Fiat and Alfa Romeo a foothold in the United States”. All our thoughts are with his family and friends. VARIETY OF KONA REVIEWS OFFER POSITIVE VERDICTS Occasionally you see a handful of publications all release a review of a car at the same time, often literally at midnight, as the press office embargo they agreed to adhere to in order to obtain the review is lifted. And so it was today with the Hyundai Kona EV, although in fairness I knew this one was coming, because the awesome Bjorn Nyland (who i love for his haphazard but incredibly in depth reviews) made a video saying it was coming. Bjorn posted almost two hours of video today on his YouTube channel. I do wish sometimes he's make a hot take edit, for those in a hurry, but please do have a look. Bjorn's channel is excellent for both its content and frequency of videos he's producing now. So after the reviews I'll talk about how to buy one, and some of the confusion we've had recently, with the online sales vs dealer sales. Plus an email from a listener to this show from someone who has one on order. Pocket-Lint: "The everyman's EV is a near-perfect crossover. The Kona looks like a future vehicle, just different enough from its petrol/diesel Kona cousins thanks to that closed front grille. It's comfortable too, with cushy seats that are both heated and cooled up front, ensuring temperature matching whatever the weather is outside. Electrically adjustable seats are a wink and a nod to this all-electric car's image, not to mention a feature usually reserved for premium options packs. There's adaptive cruise control with auto-braking, there's lane keep assist, blind spot warning, a reversing camera, and high beam assist. As the car can fully stop without using the brake pedal (the left paddle can be used as the fourth level, to control the brake, if you want), it's like a one pedal driving experience. Tom Ford for TopGear: "I drove this car for 200+ miles and it still said it had 125 miles left in it. Probably because we were in EV-charming conditions in Norway, but more likely because this car is tested against the newer Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) - calculated on real driving data. With the current virus-quality proliferation of charge points across the UK, this is starting to be one of those tipping point moments when excuses to dismiss the BEV get thin on the ground. Yes, there will inevitably be some getting used to be done, and horror stories about charge points being unavailable, but in reality this is a relatively cheap, eminently useable EV. My usage pattern consists of regular 200-mile roundtrips to airports (where leaving it on a charge point for a week is probably rude), and this car wouldn’t need a top-up. Eco mode shuts down the aircon, mutes the throttle response and seriously increases potential range, Sport does the opposite. This top-spec long range gets a head-up display, 7-inch ‘supervision cluster’, 8-inch LCD nav and cameras, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a bigger Krell audio system, power/heat/cool leather front seats and a heated steering wheel, LED headlamps and smart regenerative braking" And onto the subject of how to buy one. Click To Buy is available from 2nd August even though dealers had taken deposits. All orders will be reviewed equally. https://www.pocket-lint.com/cars/reviews/hyundai/145111-hyundai-kona-electric-review-suv-ev FORD FORMS A NEW COMPANY TO CONSOLIDATE SELF-DRIVING AND EV BUSINESSES Kyle Hyatt for CNET reports: "Ford just created a new subsidiary company called Ford Autonomous Vehicles LLC which will house all of its self-driving car efforts including Ford's self-driving systems integration, autonomous vehicle research and advanced engineering, AV transportation-as-a-service network development, user experience, business strategy and business development teams." The new company will be helmed by Sherif Marakby, currently vice president of autonomous vehicles and electrification for Ford. https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/ford-new-autonomous-self-driving-car-mobility-company/ MODEL 3 DELIVERY WINDOWS MOVING BACK "Tesla is now pushing back delivery windows on new orders for the Performance version and the rear-wheel-drive version of the new electric vehicle." writes Fred Lambert for Electrek: "Two weeks ago, Tesla cut those delivery windows down to just 1-3 months for the Performance version and the rear-wheel-drive Long Range battery pack version, according to a new update on their website. Now the company has updated its online design studio and Model 3 page with 2-4 months delivery windows for all versions of the vehicle" One of the comments from a User called 'Change' sums it up quite succinctly: "We know Tesla prioritise the delivery of their higher gross margin models so if they now despite of that cannot deliver them faster than the other versions of Model 3 I read this as evidence Tesla is selling a ton of the P3Ds which is good news with regard to Tesla getting profitable by Q3 or Q4. Also with 4 months as max delivery date and 20k production per month Tesla could have logged about 80,000 confirmed orders for Model 3." https://electrek.co/2018/07/24/tesla-model-3-delay-delivery-windows-new-orders/ ROADSIDE TECHNICIANS AND EMERGENCY SERVICES 'NEED' EV EDUCATION "The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) says it is vital that training and accreditation is extended to those dealing with electric vehicles (EVs) at the roadside" according to Fleet News: "Recent reports of a Tesla Model X, which caught fire after it had been recovered by emergency services, underline the need for industry-led accreditations and qualifications for roadside technicians and emergency services personnel working on EV and hybrid vehicles, it said. The IMI’s recommendations to implement a ‘Licence to Practise’ for those working on electric and hybrid vehicles now form part of the Government’s ‘Road to Zero’ strategy. The IMI is urging roadside and emergency services to ensure their workforces are equally well prepared." NOMADS NEW WIRELESS CHARGERS "Nomads Tesla Model 3 Wireless Charger is a wireless charging pad that’s been specifically designed to plug into the USB ports beneath the centre console on a Model 3. So instead of dealing with wires and plugs, you’ll be able to place up to two phones down on the pad to charge while on the go." according to The Verge: "The Tesla Model 3 Wireless Charger offers two 7.5W coils (so you can fast wireless charge two iPhones at once). Cleverly, the Wireless Charger also features an integrated 6,000mAh battery that can store power when you’re not actively charging phones and allow the chargers to boost power output from 1A to 2A for speedier power delivery." https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2018/7/24/17605164/nomad-wireless-charger-tesla-model-3-upgrade-phone CHINESE EV START-UP DEARCC RAISES $294M PRE-A ROUND "Chinese electronic vehicle maker Dearcc (or Dianka in Chinese), announced that it has raised a RMB2 billion (US$294 million) pre-A round from undisclosed institutional investors, an automobile industrial fund and companies in the automobile supply chain." ENTERPRISE AND GREENWICH PARTNER FOR EV CAR CLUB "Greenwich council and car rental firm Enterprise have partnered to trial an electric car club in the borough." according to Air Quality News: " Car-sharing provider Enterprise will offer its members in Greenwich access to one of two Nissan Leaf fully electric cars located in the Neighbourhood, and a further five electric vehicles will soon become available at fixed charging bays" https://www.airqualitynews.com/2018/07/24/enterprise-and-greenwich-partner-for-ev-car-club/ COMMUNITY Post from Bill Pollack You can listen to all previous 191 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.
