This week on the Auto Action RevLimiter we reflect on the career of Daniel Ricciardo, who deserved a lot more respect than Red Bull showed him. We also look at Renault shutting down its engine program and what that may mean for the Alpine team. And what about the anti-trust? Does this all open the door for Andretti? What is happening with the Ford engines for Bathurst? When did we all go there for the first time, and what has changed since then, aside from many more potholes on the road?   Plus, we've got the latest news from NASCAR, World Rally, and Speedway, which is ramping up again now that the weather is better. And we also look at the life of an all-round good bloke and great racer Peter Fitzgerald. We've got a little bit of NASCAR and SVG, along with the World Rally Championship and more on the latest edition of the Auto Action RevLimiter. Mitsubishi Galant VR4 Part 1 - The Rodney Dangerfield of Street Legal Rally Cars

Better Than New

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 19, 2022 26:41

00:00 - Intro - Mitsubishi Galant VR4 - Part 1I love the concept of street legal rally cars because of their performance capabilities… especially in all types of weather conditions, and I have been fortunate to own a couple over the years, including a Toyota Celica Alltrac Turbo (known as the GT4 in Europe) and one from Mitsubishi that I refer to as the Rodney Dangerfield of rally homologation specials because it doesn't seem to get the respect it deserves. 01:30 - The Mitsubishi Galant VR4: the Rodney Dangerfield of Street Rally SpecialsRally homologation specials are halo cars for manufacturers and typically highlight go-fast technology that showcases their ability to build a winning racecar. While these were not the actual rally racing cars, they were the street-legal platform upon which the rally cars were built. In the case of the Galant VR4, they had to meet the Group-A World Rally Championship parameters, meaning they had to be 4WD with a 2.0-liter turbocharged motor and at least 5000 had to be built for worldwide sales to the public. For the US market, Mitsubishi imported a limited edition series of 2000 badged and numbered Galant VR4s in 1991 and similar limited edition of 1000 VR4s in 1992 with only some slight differences in 1992. There were an additional 9 unbadged cars brought into the US, presumably for magazine tests and for Mitsubishi executives to drive. So 3009 total were brought to the US. The rest of the VR4s built on the 6th generation Galant chassis were sold in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and some other pacific rim countries, with the key difference being they were all right-hand drive models. 03:00 - History of the Mitsubishi Galant VR4The Galant name has been on a Mitsubishi car in Japan since the late 1960s and was first seen in the US in the 1970s but it wasn't called the Galant. Instead it was brought here as the Dodge Colt. Chrysler and Mitsubishi had a long-standing relationship with Mitsubishi rebadging cars within their line-up to help Chrysler fill the gap of small, fuel efficient cars that they needed in their line-up. The two companies eventually teamed up to form a 50-50 venture known as Diamond Star Motors to build DSM cars at a new plant in Normal, Illinois. DSM cars included the Mitsubishi Eclipse, The Eagle Talon and the Plymouth Laser. The highest performing versions of these cars had essentially the same 4G63 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive system found on the Galant VR4, so many assume the VR4 is a DSM car. But the Galant VR4 was built solely in Japan for model years 1987-1992, while the DSM factory wasn't even completed until 1988. However, the VR4 version of the 6th generation Galant does owe its existence specifically to Mitsubishi's rally racing efforts. 04:00 - Rally HeritageAfter Mitsubishi's success racing in the Paris-Dakar rally raid events in the 1980s (the Mitsubishi's Pajero Evolution won the event outright a record 12-times between 1985 and 2007), the car maker then set their sights on the World Rally Championship by attempting a run at the Group B open class with a 4WD version of their Starion Turbo sports car. Unfortunately before the Starion was fully developed, a couple of devastating Group B racing incidents happened that killed spectators and drivers, effectively ending the Group B class permanently. That made Group A the top class in World Rally, so Mitsubishi put the turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive system from the Starion Turbo into the 6th Generation Galant sedan to create the Galant VR4 Rally Car. Mitsubishi contested the WRC for 6-years from 1987 to 1992 with the Galant VR4 and won some notable events outright, including the 1000 Lakes Rally and the Lombard RAC rally, before replacing it with the first of...

Or was Max let off? Let us know in the comments below! Also, what do you think of the new format? Friday qualifying, Saturday Sprint race and then of course the main event. Not forgetting the F2 supporting, W Series and the GT race. Next week, not a lot coming up. Formula E at London Exel, British GT at Spa and British Superbikes at Brands.

Welcome to Episode 9 of Lovecars on the Grid the global motosport roundup podcast, where we're looking back at a weekend of Indycar, MotoGP plus some sportscar news in the mix and looking forward to a momentous motorsport moment this weekend – and no we don't mean the Monaco Grand Prix! First up Indycar, with Roman Grosjean sticking it on pole position! Not a great weekend for Britain's Jack Harvey, but plenty of action including Reenus Veekay, whi seems to be Indycar's version of Max Verstappen! Indylights featured Brit Toby Sowery, and other single seater news included Guiliano Aleso who won the Japanese Super Formula in chaotic wet conditions! Also plenty of rain for the MotoGP in Le Mans (not Tiff's favourite circuit layout! with over 100 crashes and one of those that came down to earth with a bump was Suzi Perry's new love Pedro Acosta, but a man who didn't crash for first time this year was Scotland's John McPhee with a solid 4th. In Moto2 Sam Lowes Q10 to crash, Jake Dixon Q26 to 19th. MotoGP included another win for Jack Miller in dry/wet race on his trusty Ducati, in a race that was briefly led by Marc Marquez, with the French coming in 2nd and 3rd. ELMS sportscars in Austria … rain again … Robert Kubica wins again … best Brits 7th but Matt Bell part of winning LMP3 team. Dry in USA where Oli Jarvis and Harry Tinknell picked up a 3rd for Mazda at Mid-Ohio … William Byron won the Drydene 400 NASCAR race and this weekend the big brutes head to Circuit of Americas for the Echod Park Texas Grand Prix – on a Grand Prix track. But the big event this weekend is of course the Monaco Grand Prix which sees brilliant Gulf liveried McLarens - also World Rally in Portugal - British GT at Brands - and the Caterham Academy at Mallory Park!

It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   POLESTAR 2 EPA RANGE RATING "The official range rating for the 2021 Polestar 2 is 233 miles (375 km), using a 78 kWh battery, which is far below our expectations." says InsideEVs: "Several months ago, Polestar's website showed a target of 275 miles (442 km), while the European WLTP rating was 470 km (292 miles). As we can see, the final EPA result is 20% lower than the WLTP."   Bjorn Nyland published his Polestar 2 range test on 21st August.  18 degrees c, 19" tyres. 90kmh it went 270 miles/435km (vs Model 3 Perf on 18" tyres 324miles/521km). 75mph/120kmh it did 305km/189 miles (vs Model 3 Perf 243 miles/391 km). The recall does not affect any cars in North America." says Green Car Reports: "After customers reported the issue, the electrified brand from Volvo Cars and Geely started a recall of roughly 2,200 cars currently in customer hands. United States deliveries hadn't quite started yet, and that cars for this market will be given a software update prior to delivery to correct the problem."   Polestar said: ""We issued a voluntary safety recall for Polestar 2 after we investigated, verified and developed a solution for an issue reported by a small number of customers"   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1129845_polestar-2-recall-for-europe-won-t-affect-us-cars-first-deliveries-soon   MERCEDES-BENZ EQE AND EQS CONFIRMED "The three new EQ models, confirmed by Mercedes in an investor conference on Tuesday, have been conceived around the German manufacturer's dedicated Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA). This is the structure that underpins the upcoming EQS luxury saloon, which is currently undergoing the final phase of development ahead of a planned UK introduction during the second half of 2021" writes Autocar: "During the investor conference, Mercedes released a marketing video of prototype versions of the EQS saloon, EQE saloon and EQS SUV undergoing testing in the Black Forest region of Germany. In the video , Mercedes' vice president of electric vehicle architecture and EQ vehicles, Christoph Starzynski, described the EQE saloon, which is planned for launch in 2022, as a “business limousine of the future” that's “slightly smaller than the EQS”. Mercedes says its new entry level EQ model, the GLA-based EQA, is planned to make production before the end of the year. Drivers from sports cars, Formula One, Formula E, and World Rally were on hand to test the new Spark Technologies Odyssey 21 E-SUV chassis and motor setup. The list of drivers was largely kept quiet, but we know Mercedes F1 number two Valtteri Bottas was among them." reports Jalopnik: "reports indicating some WRC and FIA World RallyX drivers took part. Among the drivers we do know participated were series co-founder/team owner and former Formula E champion Jean-Eric Vergne, as well as double-amputee Billy Monger, and confirmed Andretti/United Autosport driver Timmy Hansen."   https://jalopnik.com/extreme-es-six-day-shakedown-test-went-extremely-well-f-1845279964   TESLA FINALLY LAUNCHES TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION "Tesla has finally launched its two-factor authentication feature to better secure customer accounts." says Electrek: "Musk has been talking about Tesla implementing two-factor authentication in order to secure accounts. Earlier this year, the CEO said that Tesla is going to soon push two-factor authentication after an ’embarrassing delay,’. A few months later, Tesla has now officially released its two-factor authentication feature to owners."   User Haggy online explains more: "Once you set it up, both the app and web access will need the code. But you can also add a second device. If you have multiple drivers or devices, when it asks for the code, it will ask you which of your devices you want to get the code from. That's good, but if you have more than two drivers, then you will need to set up MFA for each one with a different email address. I tried that for my wife, and was able to authorize that email address for each car, but I couldn't find a way to do it for the Powerwall. So I set it back to my email address, which is now safer to share since there's MFA. It's also a PITA the way they implemented it, because many sites require the code but let you register the computer, and then don't prompt you again for a period of time if you elect that. Tesla doesn't seem to allow that."   https://electrek.co/2020/10/06/tesla-launches-two-factor-authentication-protect-customers/   TESLA MODEL S PLAID WILL USE 4680 BATTERY CELLS WITH STRUCTURAL PACK "During Battery Day, Tesla unveiled a completely new structural battery pack consisting of new 4680 lithium-ion tabless cells. It also unveiled the new Model S Plaid, which the company's CEO Elon Musk has been talking about for a long time. And now we know that the new Model S Plaid will feature the all-new structural battery pack." says Tesmanian: "520+ miles range, 1100 horsepower, acceleration from 0-60 mph in less than 2 seconds, and top speed of 200 mph. The new type of 4680 lithium-ion cells will have five times more energy, 16% more range, and six times more power. In addition, the cells will be packaged in a new way within the car. Tesla will use its structural approach to integrate cells into the vehicle's structure."   https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-model-s-plaid-will-use-4680-battery-cells-with-structural-pack   MG ELECTRIC CAR IS A THIRD OF SALES Britain’s fastest-growing car brand and rapidly expanding EV marque is marking its best-ever month in the UK, having racked up 3,668 sales in September 2020. with almost a third of the volume attributed to the zero-emissions MG ZS EV. It's a four man weave this week as The Producer and Pies are joined by Erik and Mendy to discuss all the sports that are in addition to our core range. Major League Baseball is close to the playoff stage. Erik breaks down the structure of the playoffs and where the series will be played. We've got California Bubbles and Texas Bubbles. And a surprise host of the World Series. Australia concluded the T20 & ODI tour of England winning the ODI series 2-1 after going down 1-2 in the T20 matches. Both series were a case of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Plus we have a very cursory glance at the upcoming tests with Afghanistan and India supposedly touring this Summer. More bubbles and quarantine in play, and a test series less than 24 months removed from the last in Australia. The NFL kicked off and has had two weeks of action. Tom Brady and the Bucs are taking a little while to acquaint themselves. While the NFC West looks like a murderer's row of the NFL. NBA Conference Finals are under way. Boston vs Miami and LA Lakers vs Denver. Both series are intriguing considering the Disney Bubble has been in effect for a couple of months now. Who can hold on to take out the title? Tadej Pogacar won the Tour de France after a scintillating Time Trial. Fellow Slovenian Primoz Roglic led going into the penultimate stage but lost 2 minutes on the time trial. Richie Porte fulfilled his wife's wish and he finished on the podium. Pies has backed a winner in the Horse Racing. It might be too late to find some value but follow along with Rothfire's Spring, Plus there's heaps of motorsport to cover. F1, Supercars, MotoGP, Superbikes, NASCAR and World Rally. Mendy has been watching it all. Finally we whip around the world of sport with some Darts, US Open Golf, NHL, Super Netball, Tennis and UFC. It's a bumper edition of the extra sports we watch. Fortunately he survived and went on to meet Jimmy Cornell shortly after, offering to get involved in newly created World Rally for Cruisers. He joined the WCC in 1991 and helped launch and run the inaugural 16-month WRC for 35 yachts. If you are interested in joining a cruising rally, Andrew discusses the benefits that WCC cruising couples have found most valuable. Alexandra Legouix is a podcaster, singer, yoga teacher and tv presenter who has worked in Formula One, World Rally and World Touring Car Championship. We discuss her unconventional route into presenting from acting school to Miss Great Britain, being a child interviewer, going back to basics through teaching presenting and our mutual love for podcasts. She’s probably best known as the face and pitlane reporter of Eurosport and FOX Sport’s live coverage of the FIA WTCR World Touring Car Cup. A competition that has seen her visit many countries including Macau this weekend just gone. Alex has determination in spades as she has shown by completing a Wingwalk for charity and taking part in a 6 day endurance rally across the Sahara desert in Morocco. And from her beginnings as an up and coming horse rider to an aspiring actor and singer, then becoming a regular face on TV it’s been a roller coaster journey which means she has so much experience for us to tap into and she doesn't disappoint. The stories of WCTR driver Yvan Muller shows the different ways in which to approach people and how another interviewer was ruthlessly cut down by him. And how Joanna Lumley is as lovely as we all hope she is whilst Nicole Scherzinger offered up one of the most moments in her career. She has not one but two podcasts, with her most recent one called Mindset Unfiltered with the likes of the aforementioned Yvan Muller, which launched after our chat (some inspirational words must have been exchanged when we met!) . The other, and one we talked about in the podcast, is Girl on Girl. Thanks Alex for her time and to you for listening. Journalist's Passion Leads to High Profile Digital Platform A motor racing broadcaster, commentator and journalist, Will Buxton has had the rare pleasure of turning his great passion into something resembling work for the better part of 20 years. His career has taken him around the world countless times to report on everything from Formula 1 to World Rally to Indycar. Show #502   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 16th  June 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   WRC RULES OFFICIALLY SWITCH TO HYBRID POWER FOR 2022 SEASON "The World Rally Championship’s highest class will move to incorporate hybrid electric drive in two seasons time. The rule change will initially feature what the rulemakers are calling a “supplementary hybrid system” with spec components and software as a transitional stage from 2022 to 2025. Following that, regulations will open up for more electric power assist options." says Jalopnik: "The current aim of the move to hybrid is to provide the cars an ability to run in full EV while driving through transit stages through cities, and provide an as-yet-undefined power boost on special stages."   https://jalopnik.com/wrc-rules-officially-switch-to-hybrid-power-for-2022-se-1835543291   SEVERAL STATES WANT TO USE CREDIT CARDS AT EV STATIONS "A number of states across the U.S. are proposing to install magnetic stripe credit card readers at publicly-funded electric vehicle charging stations – and that’s causing concern among security experts." reports CarScoops: "Tech Crunch reports that most current EV charging station rely on a credit card linked through an app or contactless payments with RFID-enabled credit cards or a driver’s smartphone or smartwatch. Not only are contactless payments easy, but they are also very secure and reduce the chance of cards being cloned or having data skimmed. Despite this, states including Arizona, California, Nevada, Vermont, and those in New England may introduce more traditional card readers."   https://www.carscoops.com/2019/06/several-states-want-to-use-credit-cards-at-ev-stations-security-concerns-arise/   FORMULA E CALENDAR 2019/20 The Express reports: "There will be added interest in the all-electric championship next season when manufacturing giants Porsche and Mercedes join the fray, giving an indication of the momentum behind Electric Vehicle Technology. Regulation changes include an increase in power that drivers will have available during Attack Mode, while they will not be able to activate the boost under a full-course yellow or safety car conditions Therefore, they will have to move off the racing line and activate Attack Mode while under normal racing conditions and run the risk of losing positions."   https://www.express.co.uk/sport/f1-autosport/1140789/Formula-E-calendar-2019-20220-London-Seoul-revealed-14-race-schedule             FRENCH EV SALES UP 34% IN MAY 2019 The French plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market scored 4,051 registrations in May, up 34% year over year (YoY), with fully electric cars (+36%) growing faster than plug-in hybrids (30%). All-electric cars (BEVs) represented 71% of all plug-in sales." writes CleanTechica today: "This growth is even more significant when we realize that the overall auto market remained stagnant (+1%). This result placed the 2019 PEV share (so far) at 2.5%, with BEVs alone having 1.8% share. Renault Zoe’s sales were up 23%, hitting 1,331 units, an impressive performance. This is especially notable considering the heavily revised Zoe Neo is just a couple of months away, as are the electric versions of the Peugeot 208 and Opel Corsa, while the much hyped VW ID.3 is not that far away either. Elsewhere, the Tesla Model 3 recovered its natural place in the French market, the runner-up spot, with 321 deliveries, but what people really want to know is — will the Tesla sports sedan be able to reach another 1,000+/month performance in June or were the 1,153 units of March a freak event?"   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/15/french-ev-sales-up-34-in-may-2019/   HONDA'S NEW EV COULD BE A REAL WORLD-BEATER "Engineered from the ground up for battery power (instead of adapted to the purpose after the fact), the new architecture will integrate a 35.5-kWh water-cooled lithium-ion battery pack placed down low within the wheelbase for ideal balance. The electric motor will drive the rear wheels, riding on an independent suspension made (in part) out of forged aluminum with the wheels pushed out to the extremities for agility." says CarBuzz: Honda says the vehicle will be able to travel over 125 miles on a charge"   https://carbuzz.com/news/honda-s-new-ev-could-be-a-real-world-beater   THE AUDI E-TRON IS AN EV FOR BEGINNERS From BMWBlog: "The Audi e-tron sports a 95 kWh battery pack and is capable of charging at 150 kW. More importantly, it’s capable of sustaining that charge speed for almost its entire charge cycle. From about 10-percent to almost 80-percent, the e-tron can charge at 150 kW. That gives it the broadest band of fast charging of any EV on the market. That’s more important than a lot of critics might claim."   They says "Some prototype Tesla Model 3s can charge at 250 kW "   "Audi intended for the e-tron to be the car that brought traditional Audi customers over to electric mobility. After spending some time with it, I think Audi nailed its intended objective, for better or worse. If you’re looking for something funky and weird, something with a whoopee cushion mode in its main touchscreen, the e-tron is probably not for you."   https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/06/15/first-drive-the-audi-e-tron-is-an-ev-for-beginners/   UNITED STATES SPEND TEN TIMES MORE ON FOSSIL FUEL SUBSIDIES THAN EDUCATION "A new International Monetary Fund (IMF) study shows that USD$5.2 trillion was spent globally on fossil fuel subsidies in 2017. The equivalent of over 6.5% of global GDP of that year, it also represented a half-trillion dollar increase since 2015 when China ($1.4 trillion), the United States ($649 billion) and Russia ($551 billion) were the largest subsidizers." according to Forbes: "US spend on these subsidies in 2015 is more than the country’s defense budget and 10 times the federal spending for education"   https://www.forbes.com/sites/jamesellsmoor/2019/06/15/united-states-spend-ten-times-more-on-fossil-fuel-subsidies-than-education   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
