Audio recordingSermon manuscript:Our Gospel reading is appropriate as we approach the celebration of the birth of Jesus. Our Gospel reading describes something that happened not long before Jesus was born. Mary, Jesus's mother, visited her relative, Elizabeth. Both Mary and Elizabeth were pregnant with very special babies. Mary had been visited by the angel Gabriel who told her that she would conceive and bear a son. She was to name him Jesus because he would be the Savior. Elizabeth's pregnancy was also unusual. Elizabeth and her husband Zechariah were old and had not been given any children. Zechariah had also been visited by Gabriel who told him that he and his wife would conceive in their old age. The child was to be named John. Zechariah and Elizabeth did conceive about six months before Gabriel went to Mary. So in our reading today Mary was pregnant with Jesus and Elizabeth was pregnant with John the Baptist. Luke says that Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She is filled with joy, and she speaks several blessings. She blesses Mary: “Blessed are you among women.” She blesses Jesus: “Blessed is the fruit of Mary's womb.” She blesses herself. She rhetorically asks: “Why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” Her thoughts turn to her son. She comments on how her baby leaped for joy at Mary's greeting. Finally, Elizabeth blesses Mary for her faith. Perhaps Elizabeth's thoughts turned to what it might have been like when Mary heard Gabriel's message. Elizabeth said, “Blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.” Not every woman would believe that she could conceive while remaining a virgin simply because the Lord said so. Mary did. She said to God: “Let it be done to me according to your Word.” Elizabeth moves from one blessing to the next. Everyone is blessed. All are exceedingly happy. What I'd like to consider today is why they are so happy. I'd also like to pay attention to our own happiness. Happiness is important to us. We all would like to be happy. So, in fact, before we consider what makes these women happy, I think it would be beneficial first to consider what makes us happy. We can then be on the lookout for what might be different with these women. There are a lot of things that can make us happy. Hunger being satisfied with food makes us happy; thirst, with drink. We have many desires and needs. We want and need affection, comfort, entertainment. We like to be right. We like to be the best. We like making progress. Getting richer is better than getting poorer. Getting stronger is better than getting weaker. There are so many ways to be happy, and we like them all. The more, the better; the more, the happier. Now let's consider these women's happiness. What makes them happy doesn't exactly fit the pattern we've sketched out. They aren't getting stronger, richer, better. Elizabeth's life didn't get easier with her pregnancy in old age. Mary's life was thrown into turmoil to a much greater degree. Mary became pregnant when she wasn't married. Everyone would have assumed that the pregnancy was the result of fornication. Joseph, her fiancé, had no other choice but to assume that she had been unfaithful. An angel had to intervene to tell him otherwise. Mary would have had a hard time of it because most would not believe what sounds like a far-fetched story—that Mary was pregnant with the Son of God by the power of the Holy Spirit. Consider, additionally, the several clues about Mary and Joseph's poverty and powerlessness. When they came to Bethlehem they couldn't get a room. If they had more money, they could have compelled someone to provide for them. Later, when the sacrifices were made in the Temple, the cheaper option of two pigeons was offered instead of the more expensive lamb. These clues indicate that Mary and Joseph were poor. The baby was born into poverty: “No crib for a bed” to lay down his sweet head. If we place ourselves into Mary's shoes, we can see how she lacked things that we regard as essential for happiness. So how can she be happy? How can Elizabeth be happy for her when trouble is on every side? She even makes the audacious claim that Mary is blessed over and above all others. The only explanation is that they were focused on things that aren't often looked to for happiness. We might sum up all that they were feeling by saying: They were happy because the kingdom of God was coming upon the earth. What is the kingdom of God, and why is it a good thing? We can't hardly talk about a kingdom without talking about the king. Something you might keep an ear open for the next couple days is how often Christmas carols will sing about Jesus being the king, or the Lord: “Joy to the world, the Lord has come.” Or: “Come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn king.” The good news of great joy that is for all people is, as the angel declared on Christmas night, that unto us a Savior has been born who is Christ the Lord. The work of Christ the King in his kingdom is made plain in the Gospels. Jesus did several things. He taught the Word of God that has always been calling people away from evil, away from the devil, towards that which is good and true—life giving and life protecting. Jesus taught people to believe in the only true God instead of the various false gods. Jesus acted with power, performing miracles. His many cleansings, healings, and restorations to life were a foreshadowing of the greater work he will do when he resurrects the dead. Over and above all these things, but also at the very root of them, Jesus suffered and died. As our epistle reading mentions, he offered his body once for all. My favorite line of all the Christmas carols is the one where it says: “Nails, spear shall piece him through. The cross be borne for me, for you. Hail, hail the Word made flesh, the babe, the Son of Mary.” The king sacrificed himself. The result is forgiveness, righteousness, and life for everyone. So if we return to the happiness and joy of Elizabeth and Mary, we can see that it is outside of them. The kingdom of God is coming. Happiness depends on the king, not on themselves. So long as their faith in this king doesn't fail, nothing can take their happiness away. Whatever sadnesses might come, they cannot undo the march of progress the kingdom of God will make. You can see this in both their lives. Both Elizabeth's and Mary's unborn baby boys would eventually be killed at the hands of evil men. Simeon prophesied to Mary in the temple: “A sword will pass through your heart.” Mary mourned at the death of her Son, but God will turn all mourning into gladness. Jesus died, but then he rose. Then his kingdom only entered a new phase, the song swelled to an even higher pitch. Joy will grow, even if, in the meantime, we pass through the valley of the shadow of death. This joy is available to each and every one of you. All that is needed is to be like Elizabeth and Mary: Believe in Jesus's kingdom. To believe is not some great challenge or a puzzle you have to figure out. It is only a matter of believing the testimony that is given about Jesus, and testimonies abound! Elizabeth gave her testimony in our reading. The angel gave his testimony on Christmas night. The apostles, evangelists, prophets, prophetesses, deacons, and deaconesses all gave their testimony, and they all say the same thing: Jesus Christ is Lord. He does all things well. He sets all things right. This is good news, which comes to us from the outside. It does not place any demands upon us. It does not require any preparation. Think of all those people in the Gospels whom Jesus helped. Did the blind man have to start improving himself before Jesus would give him sight? No. The blind man remained as blind as a bat. The deaf man remained as deaf as a stone, until Jesus made them otherwise. The only thing that happened to them prior to their healings was that they were given hope in Jesus the king by the good news that was told them. The same thing is true for us today. We have problems. We might have a bad reputation. We might be poor. We might be blind, deaf, lame, demon possessed. Believe in Jesus. And let's apply this to sin. One of the most frustrating parts about being a Christian is that we end up falling into sin, even though we really don't want to—or at least a part of us doesn't want to. What do we do with that? We almost can't help thinking that we must clean ourselves up in order to become acceptable before God. That seems right. To do otherwise can make it seem as though sin doesn't matter. We have to take our sin very seriously. These are not altogether bad thoughts, but they can make us lose sight of the one thing that makes all the difference—the one thing that makes us happy with a happiness that no one can take away: Jesus is the king. He saves sinners. He baptizes you, you don't baptize yourself. He forgives you, you don't forgive yourself. The kingdom of God is on a roll with the preaching of the Word that Jesus is the Savior. What is asked of us is not a great burden: Stick with the king. Listen to his Word. Jesus will do everything he has promised. Jesus is going to win. So you, like Elizabeth and Mary, may fully embrace the goodness of the kingdom of God that made them so happy that blessings were flying all over the place. The kingdom of God is the best, because Jesus is the best. No matter what is going on, no matter how disappointed you might be in yourself or in others, Jesus Christ is Lord. “Come Thou long-expected Jesus, born to set Thy people free.” Amen.
Chapter 1:Summary of Book Pride and prejudice"Pride and Prejudice," a novel by Jane Austen first published in 1813, is a romantic story set in the early 19th century in rural England. It centers on the Bennett family, particularly the second eldest daughter, Elizabeth. The main plot revolves around the complex relationship between Elizabeth and the wealthy, aloof Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy. The story begins with the arrival of a wealthy and eligible bachelor, Mr. Charles Bingley, in the neighborhood, exciting the local families, including the Bennetts, who have five unmarried daughters. Mr. Bingley soon takes a liking to the eldest Bennett daughter, Jane. Meanwhile, Mr. Darcy initially appears proud and dismissive, particularly towards Elizabeth, whose lively spirit and sharp wit contrast with his more reserved nature.Central to the novel is the theme of misjudgments and the difficulties of understanding someone's true character. Both Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy make poor judgments about each other and those around them. Elizabeth's prejudice against Darcy stems from her initial perceptions and is fueled by misleading information, while Darcy's pride in his social status leads him initially to scorn the environment of the Bennett family. As the story unfolds, various family and social dramas emerge, including scandalous elopements, failed proposals, and misinterpreted intentions. Both Elizabeth and Darcy undergo personal growth. Elizabeth recognizes her predisposition to hastily judge others, while Darcy becomes more self-aware and learns humility, ultimately shedding his veneer of pride.Their mutual evolution paves the way for romance between Elizabeth and Darcy, challenging societal norms and personal pride. Throughout the novel, Jane Austen explores themes of love, reputation, and class, and provides social commentary on the status of women and the dependence on marriage for social standing."Pride and Prejudice" ends with various resolutions of family and romantic entanglements, including the marriages of Elizabeth to Mr. Darcy and Jane to Mr. Bingley, suggesting themes of reconciliation and social harmony.Chapter 2:The Theme of Book Pride and prejudice"Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen is a novel rich in themes, character development, and essential plot points. During this stay, Elizabeth observes the behavior of Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley, developing her impressions.4. Mr. Collins' Proposal: The ludicrous Mr. Collins proposes to Elizabeth, who refuses him. #37 - ADHD in our Workplace, in our Kids, and US - with Elizabeth Baker Today's conversation is real and raw and I couldn't be more thankful for the vulnerability and honest conversation. My guest today is the wonderful Elizabeth Baker. She is a friend that I met through a mastermind group I belong to. Elizabeth is married with 5 kiddos with ages ranging from 12 to 4! Woah! She's busy! She grew up on the Canadian prairie in a town of 300 people. She earned a bachelor's degree from BYU -Idaho in Social Studies Education. She was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 36 and has been trying to share her story ever since in hopes she can help others on their own journey. Elizabeth is very passionate about speaking out in favor of being curious about ADHD. Today we dive in on these topics: The shame of feeling like there is constantly “something wrong with us” What neurodivergent means How to channel those “why can't I focus” thoughts Behaviors and character traits of someone who has ADHD Signs that someone on your work team may be struggling with ADHD Understanding how ADHD shows up for and in our kids. ADHD is a real struggle for a lot of working women in the world right now and is still underdiagnosed. In 2018, the CDC reported an increase of 344% in women seeking medication for ADHD, while Google searches in the U.S. related to ADHD in women more than doubled between March 2021 and March 2022. The workplace is where many women with ADHD struggle the most, whether it's attempting to work the same way as their neurotypical team members, navigating the social scene, living up to expectations, or, notably, finding the confidence to ask for help - all while trying to show up positively for their spouses and children. Many women are trying to mask their symptoms or blame themselves in order to conform with, which we know is so not healthy! Today's conversation is all about trying to help you if you struggle with ADHD. Both Elizabeth and I get real about how this has affected our own lives and how we think we and you…. are fabulous for it! A huge part of our human condition is going to work. Let's face it — for most of us, we spend more time with our colleagues and co-workers than our families. But, what if we imagined a better way?A non-traditional wellness company based in Nashville, Tenn. called TRILUNA, is doing just that. Co-founders and Co-CEOs Elizabeth Moore and Ashley Brooke James started TRILUNA after hustle culture literally made them sick. Both Elizabeth and Ashley met while obtaining health coaching and yoga certifications after quitting their corporate jobs. Now, you can often find them leading workshops, hosting festivals, speaking at conferences, and executing panels about the power of stress management and self-care to prevent burnout.Typically, Ashley joins Elizabeth in these types of discussions, but we did record this episode during a particularly stressful point during the Omicron surge here in Tennessee. So, today on Human Amplified, you'll be hearing from a solo Elizabeth Moore. This episode is for you if hustle culture just isn't cutting it anymore and you want to educate yourself on how to say no to it. In other words, if you're going through the motions of the grind day in and day out and it's detracting from your life — as it is for so many others as evidenced by The Great Resignation — listen in as guest Elizabeth Moore empowers us to renegotiate our relationship to wellness, failure, work, our work environment, and our co-workers.She explains the impacts of chronic stress and burnout on our bodies and our communities, including our work communities. From this episode, you'll learn: -What an unhealthy or sick environment is-How to recognize stress in your body-How to know when stress turns to burnout-When to set boundaries around your times of diminished capacity to produce-How to use vulnerability to change culture-And, what the hard conversations are that need to occur so we can start shifting expectations around stress and burn out at workTRIGGER WARNING: This episode does come with a trigger warning. To get the full context of why a non-traditional approach to wellness can be needed to foster healthier change, we discuss Elizabeth's journey with body dysmorphia and an eating disorder in detail.***************Support for this podcast comes from Bed of Nails. We are captivated by stories of the ‘suddenly' of the scriptures. We often think of God's intervention as immediate and instant. But we forget the longer work of preparation. What took place before the suddenly. How can our faithfulness to what God asks us to do, which seems ordinary, be a place of Divine connection? The seemingly long and boring obedience of our lives can be the perfect place and the right preparation for God to move. Both Elizabeth and Zechariah are committed and faithful to their faith and practice, despite seeing evidence of their prayers being answered. It's in that long obedience that God shows up.Support the show (http://www.clarksburgchurch.com)
This week, I spoke with the Spiritual Investor, Elizabeth Ralph. We dive right into a big topic - scarcity and abundance and what it means to be in the energy of money. This episode gets into the nitty gritty of money mindset, and what it takes to get out of the scarcity and lack mentality and lean into more ease. We initially met Elizabeth Jolly at our second ever race at the 2018 24 Hours of Lemons race in Thompson CT. We then listened to her on the first few Shifting Points podcast. Then we met her at our recent skid pad and autocross event at Lime Rock Park with the SCDA group. It was at this point, we realized that these three ladies were all the same person. We could say we were overwhelmed at our second race; we could also say that we didn't recognize her since she was in her “Flo” costume, but it was great to meet her in person for the second time. On this episode, we catch up with Elizabeth on her thoughts about the SCDA event, her new E30 race car and then we talk through how to learn to work on a car from a starting point of near zero skills, experience, and tools. Both Elizabeth and Vicki have both progressed far in the past few years and maybe someday Bill will as well. Lol. On this episode’s Dominating with Dawson, we go into Ben’s extensive karting experience and discuss the various types of karts and kart racing available. Karting can definitely help your driving and racing, most things translate, and it is a great way to practice for relatively low cost. We do try to go into the parts of karting that translate and what doesn’t translate directly due to the difference in car geometry and suspension. While Ben is pulled away for his daddy duties, we take a slight detour into cake baking and decorating from our resident cake decorating expert, Miss Jen. Our first ever partial WOOT DwD episode. Even Ben came to the table with a Coca Cola cake, recipe tbd, lol. They are a great system and truly invaluable in safely increasing your speed on track and/or autocross etc. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights from this episode include: 1) Bill herds/hosts this episode. Vicki and Jen, as always, are so excited to have a fellow lady racing driver. 2) Elizabeth races autocross and endurance racing and almost all other forms of driving she can try. She started with a quick purchase of a 944 that then several other soon to be race cars. Her latest purchase is her new BMW E30 prepped race car. It even has a bit of history and we are sure Elizabeth will add to it as well. 3) Elizabeth and Jen commiserate about the wonderful weather at their first Lemons event. It was a downpour and the humidity hit a point where nearly all glass surfaces fogged making visibility even worse. We then go into the importance of seating position and the effect it can have on the driver’s ability to see as well. 4) Bill starts a plan. Nothing good can come of this. It's looking like a girls race weekend is upcoming. Bill is bringing palm fronds and a butler outfit for the ladies. 5) The discussion on beginning to learn about working on cars from scratch begins around 28:30 or so. Some great information that should help others go from garage zero to Garage Hero. See what we did there, lol. It was too easy to resist. 6) To the surprise of no one, Vicki relates the car to her past arts and crafts projects. The analogy does hold some merit from a material perspective. Elizabeth has even gone into the area of the electrical system and wiring of her 944’s. 7) The ladies provide a ton of tips and tricks that they have learned along the way. UNEXPLAINED MYSTERIES with bestselling author and researcher Steph Young
In the elevator, Elisa Lam wore a red hoodie and a white shirt. In the elevator of the Cecil Hotel, we can see she is wearing this outfit. Very strangely, this is identical to the outfit a character called ‘Cecilia,’ wore in the horror movie ‘Dark Water’, where a woman ends up dead in a water tower on the roof of a building. There is also a very creepy elevator scene in the movie, with a young woman dressed identical to Elisa Lam in the elevator. What happened to Elisa Lam is almost identical to this horror movie; yet the movie was made before Elisa’s death. Elisa died in 2013. The movie was released in 2005. It is a remake of a Japanese horror movie made in 2002, and the story originates from a book by Koji Suzuki who also wrote ‘The Rings.’ The American version of ‘Dark Water’ stars Jennifer Connelly as ‘Dahlia,’ who has a young daughter called ‘Cecilia.’ They move into a run-down apartment. Not long after they move in, water begins to drip from their bedroom ceiling. The elevator in the building is prone to malfunctioning, like Elisa’s elevator. Cecilia sneaks up to the roof one day and finds a back-pack sitting next to the water tower. In time, Cecilia and Dahlia cannot help but notice the dark water which starts to run out of their taps and toilet. Dahlia goes up to the roof and to her horror, she finds a girl’s dead body floating in the water tower; just like the real-life case of Elisa Lam at the Cecil hotel. How can it be that a movie released before Elisa vanished, seems to mimic so precisely the last known hours of Elisa’s life; even down to the exact outfit she is wearing in an old elevator that malfunctions just like the elevator in the movie? Naming one character ‘Cecilia,’ and the other ‘Dahlia,’ we also cannot but help think of the infamous ‘Black Dahlia’ case in LA, and indeed there seems to be many similarities between Elisa Lam and the ‘Black Dahlia’ victim, Elizabeth Short. Many believe that the Cecil Hotel where Elisa vanished was the last place Elizabeth Short was seen. Elizabeth Short was a young aspiring actress who was found mutilated in January 1947. Her face was carved into a ‘Glasgow Smile’, her body drained of blood, and cut in half, then washed in gasoline. When a local resident happened across her body, at first, they thought it was a store mannequin. Her body was left on display, deliberately to be found and seen. The notorious case of ‘The Black Dahlia,’ as Elizabeth Short came to be known, is an as yet still-unsolved murder-mystery that has beguiled so many. Elisa was ‘washed clean’ by the water, and some believe she too had been drained of blood, because there was so little blood left in her body that it was not even possible to carry out many of the necessary forensic tests. There are other striking and unsettling similarities between Elisa Lam and Elizabeth Short, whose severed body was found on Leimont Park. Both Elizabeth and Elisa were petite, brunette, and pretty, both were called names that derive from Elizabeth, both were in their twenties, and both sadly suffered from depression. Both were known to travel alone and both had travelled from San Diego to downtown LA just prior to their deaths. Both Elisa and the Black Dahlia vanished after last being seen in a downtown hotel, and many say this was the Cecil Hotel. Both were not reported missing for a number of days before their bodies were found, and both died horrifying, inexplicable deaths that would become notorious. Both appear to have been drained of blood. Both cases ‘went viral.’ Newspapers around the world and armchair detectives have been fascinated with the mystery of who killed ‘The Black Dahlia’ for decades, and now Elisa too. Notably as already said, the movie ‘Dark Water’ has a central character called ‘Dahlia,’ and ‘Dahlia’s young daughter is called ‘Cecilia’; so similar to the word ‘Cecil,’ Elisa’s Hotel. It would almost seem as though this movie ties the Black Dahlia and Elisa Lam together in a way that is impossib...
"With Christ entering the desert for 40 days of temptation we will transition from our celebration of His epiphany into the celebration of Lent. Song: O God of Earth and Altar (Prayer for the Nation) Passage: Joel 2:12-19 A Simple Church Year Catechism - Lent & Easter Hello everyone and Welcome to episode #8 of the Anno Domini Podcast. A podcast dedicated to the supremacy of Christ over all things including our days, weeks, and months. Join me as we explore how Christ is revealed through the cyclical life of the church calendar year. We'll discover how this calendar once structured culture and how it can again. We'll also discuss practical ways to observe and celebrate these holy days in our quest to glorify God and live the good life in the midst of all good He has given us. Welcome back! My name for those just joining us is Joe Stout and the last few weeks have been extremely eventful in the Stout household. We welcomed with joy the birth of our 5th daughter, Ruthie Jane. Both Elizabeth and baby Ruthie are doing wonderfully well, God be praised. It's been a little over 7 weeks since our last podcast. So In that episode I introduced the season of Epiphany in which we celebrate the manifestation or revealing of Christ to the world. He is revealed on Epiphany to the Magi, revealed to the world through His public baptism, revealed at the temple to Simeon, revealed to His inner circle on the mountain through His transfiguration and finally, His manifestation culminates as Christ goes into the desert and reveals Himself to Satan where he does battle for 40 days. With Christ entering the desert for 40 days of temptation we will transition from our celebration of His epiphany into the celebration of Lent. As the days lengthen and spring approaches we will daily be reminded that Easter is on the move and the days of the power of sin over God's people has ended. As a quick reminder we will look at for different segments, we generally start with the practical ways of celebrating a holiday or season of time, we then examine the biblical rationale for the holiday, then we look at how the holiday has been celebrated in history and finish with a hymn or psalm of music that we examine and listen to together. So let's get started Practical Starting with the practical side, In the Stout house, we have never observed Lent or Ash Wednesday for that matter. This is due really to a combination of reasons the biggest one being that observing this time wasn't a part of our families upbringing. We tend to emulate the way we were raised and that is a design feature not a bug. Kids turning out like their parents is how God made the world. It shouldn't surprise us. Personally, this is an area of huge blessing for both Elizabeth and I as we had and still have righteous parents who raised us in the fear and admonition of the Lord. In fact in many cases we also had righteous grandparents going back several generations. We ought to go in the ways of our Father when our father's go in the ways of the Lord. As GK Chesterton once observed, “these are the days when the Christian is expected to praise every creed except his own.” Christians shouldn't fall into that temptation. We ought to feel a deep comfort in following the paths our father's have laid for us provided those paths were honoring to God law. I say this because I have no paths to follow on this one; no prior experience to hearken back to. On the plus side, Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent have no sentimental or nostalgic value for me or my wife that could cloud God's voice. On the negative

This is due really to a combination of reasons the biggest one being that observing this time wasn’t a part of our families upbringing. We tend to emulate the way we were raised and that is a design feature not a bug. Kids turning out like their parents is how God made the world. It shouldn’t surprise us. We ought to feel a deep comfort in following the paths our father’s have laid for us provided those paths were honoring to God law. I say this because I have no paths to follow on this one; no prior experience to hearken back to. On the plus side, Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent have no sentimental or nostalgic value for me or my wife that could cloud God’s voice. On the negative side, it has none of the familiarities that for many Christians they have come to expect and naturally are held accountable too. With that in mind what should Christians do during Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent? Let’s take a look at the historical practice of the church and then answer that question. HistoricalAsh Wednesday and the season of Lent precedes Easter by 40 days. As we stated earlier, In the gospel, Jesus fasts and does battle with Satan for 40 days in the desert. 40 days is a common number in Scripture and indicates a period of fullness or a complete cycle of time. Because the time of lent precedes the victory of Christ on the cross, we know that the suffering Christ experienced led ultimately to His glorification. Just as God’s promise to us is that if we humble ourselves, He will lift us up, so Jesus was tempted for 40 days and and beyond, was humbled to the point of death on a cross (a cursed tree) and during all of this faithfully obeyed His Father in Heaven. Because He was faithful in this, God raised Him up to glory and Christ calls us to follow the same path. Now if you check the math you will see that Wednesday February 26th 2020 is actually 46 days before Easter on April 12th. This apparent inconsistency is actually proof of a point I’ve tried to make every episode thus far on the Anno Domini podcast. And that point is this: The church calendar is not a binding requirement for Christians. However, the Lord’s Day each week is the one day that Christians are bound to observe. It is literally one of the 10 commandments so ignoring it is not an option. Therefore 40 days of Lent don’t include Sundays since those Sundays are the Lord’s Days and are ALWAYS and I do mean always, a day of Feasting, Celebrating, and Joyfully giving God glory by setting the day aside for Him. If we are in a season of penance, and I will define that in a moment, than we set that discipline aside on the Lord’s Day to give Him the glory due Him by feasting. Bottom line: The Lord’s Day is not a day for fasting. So what is Lent and what is Ash Wednesday?Lent comes from the Middle English word Lente (with an e on the end) which simply means “spring.” It also comes from an Old English word Lengten which means to lengthen, referring of course to the lengthening of days leading up to Spring and Easter morning.Lent is similar to Advent in that during lent, we are anticipating something coming that is well worth the wait. Just like in Advent, we patiently and eagerly anticipate the coming of the Messiah. During Lent we are anticipating and waiting on the victory of Christ over sin, the devil, and death itself.Ash Wednesday has historically been the day that Christian get an ashen cross drawn on their foreheads to remind them of that primeval curse pronounced at the fall that “dust you are, and to dust you shall return.” We are mortal and the dust or ashes signify this. Abraham seems to understand this truth while speaking to God in Genesis 18:27 when he remarks. “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes,” and God certainly knows this seeing that he formed man from the dust of the ground and Psalm 103:14 promises us that He hasn’t forgot this either “for He knows our frame; He is mindful that we are dust.” So the point of Ash Wednesday is to remind us that we are as frail as dust. Not that man is as lowly as dirt…nothing more than a worm. No we are not being reminded of this but rather the question which James 4:14 asks and answers “What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.”This is the point of Ash Wednesday, to set the tone for the weeks to follow which is that of penance. Now what do I mean by penance? This is important to define because in the Catholic church penance is an actual sacrament and I believe one of the chief ways in which Catholics wrongly follow a path toward what amounts to self justification. If I do enough penance I will be worthy. This is totally anti-gospel. We are not penitent so that we can become worthy, we are penitent because we’ve been made worthy by the blood of Christ and our only logical response to this kindness of God is a spirit of penance as defined in 1828 by Noah Webster as simply repentance. Lent ought to be a season, and certainly not the only time, in which we take careful notice of the gargantuan gulf separating sinful man from the Holy God. Christians often minimize the distance between the holiness of God and the lowliness of our own spiritual state. But our natural spiritual state is antithetical to the station of God in heaven. Without the blood of Christ making us worthy, no amount of penance could ever be “enough” to bridge the gulf. We are helpless and dead in our sin and only the empowering work of the Holy Spirit through gospel can change this. Therefore during the time of Lent we should use it as an opportunity to pay careful attention this empowering work of the Spirit. In Ezekiel 37, the Lord tells the prophet to preach the gospel to the valley of dry bones and both flesh and breath enters the bones and they are seen as a great army. This is a picture of the gospel. The breath of life entering and bringing life to a corpse so dead all that is left are a heap dry bones.During Lent we are reminded of our need to examine ourselves in the light of the gospel. What patterns in our life are inconsistent with a life of victory over sin?Practical Things to do during Lent:Devote your time to others. Give to those who cannot repay. Visit nursing homes, the sick, or shut-ins.Pray for the Spirit to reveal hidden sins and then confess them to God remembering that He is faithful to forgive them. Also remember that repentance and self hatred are at odds with one another. We are made in God’s image and only Satan hates that we never should. We can face our sin and repent of it without self loathing.Fasting from food, not just one or two things but actually experiencing times of fasting. Fasting works like a spiritual alarm clock, protecting you from the complacency found with a full belly.Devote yourself with other to times of prayer for specific requests and mark these times by fasting from food. But never on the Lord’s DaySeek community and unity during this time. While personal times of devotion to God are important we are the ONE bride of Christ. There won’t be any empty seats that table of supper of the lamb. We will be one body for eternity so we should act like we are now.A quick word on fasting which at this point is the main thing that Lent is associated with. In the law there is only one prescribed day of fasting which is called the Day of Atonement. However there are literally weeks and weeks of prescribed feast days. This seems to indicate that feasting is either more important or at least AS important as fasting. However Peter Leithart notices that as the scriptures progresses fasting becomes more common. He speculates that this could indicate that with maturity comes patience in waiting for the good things to come. You don’t expect nursing infants and little kids to fast but as they grow in maturity you expect them to grow in the discipline of waiting for good things. Fasting provides an opportunity for this. However don’t give things up simply for the sake of giving something up. Give something up in order that you can be a more useful servant for the Cross of Christ. Will we be celebrating Ash Wednesday by receiving an ashen cross on our heads? No. While I know that Catholics and Lutherans know about the teaching of Christ and His express prohibition on outward signs of fasting, I feel, at least at this point, that going and getting smudged with ashes so that the world knows I am now fasting is in direct opposition to the teaching of Christ when He said “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” This “anointing your head and washing your face” seems to indicate the greater feast that is to come and so the outward sign of an unwashed face seems to miss that point. While I won’t be getting a visible outward sign on Ash Wednesday I will be attempting to follow, in secret, the practical ideas listed above. Also, I will include a link to a wonderful little catechism that is excellent to use during Lent for yourself or your little ones too. Biblical Joel 2:12-19Our biblical passage today is from the Old Testament lectionary reading in Joel. I’m not going to give any commentary on it but just read it and you will see what an apropos passage it is for Ash Wednesday and the days of Lent to come. The Gospel as throughout this passage. God is full of lovingkindness toward those who humble themselves before Him.“Now, therefore,” says the Lord,“Turn to Me with all your heart,With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.”So rend your heart, and not your garments;Return to the Lord your God,For He is gracious and merciful,Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm.Who knows if He will turn and relent,And leave a blessing behind Him—A grain offering and a drink offeringFor the Lord your God?Blow the trumpet in Zion,Consecrate a fast,Call a sacred assembly;Gather the people,Sanctify the congregation,Assemble the elders,Gather the children and nursing babes;Let the bridegroom go out from his chamber,And the bride from her dressing room.Let the priests, who minister to the Lord,Weep between the porch and the altar;Let them say, “Spare Your people, O Lord,And do not give Your heritage to reproach,That the nations should rule over them. Why should they say among the peoples,‘Where is their God?’ ”Then the Lord will be zealous for His land,And pity His people. The Lord will answer and say to His people,“Behold, I will send you grain and new wine and oil,And you will be satisfied by them;I will no longer make you a reproach among the nations. The promise of God is that to those who humble themselves He will lift up but the proud He actively opposes. During this season of Lent may our attitude toward God be one of repentance and humility so that we might be lifted up by Him. May we choose the seat at the foot of the table so that we might be called up to the place of honor. MusicalIn 1906 there was a young energetic English Anglican by the name of Gilbert who penned a rousing hymn full of vitality and courage. It was a call to National Repentance. The song is called O God of Earth and Alter and in parenthesis were the words, (Prayer for the Nation). It was written by GK Chesterton in his early thirties before he converted to the Church of Rome. In the Spirit of the Lenten Season may this hymn, written 114 years ago be just as appropriate for us 21st century Americans as when it was written. Let’s listen to the words.O God of earth and altar,Bow down and hear our cry,Our earthly rulers falter,Our people drift and die;The walls of gold entomb us,The swords of scorn divide,Take not thy thunder from us,But take away our pride. From all that terror teaches,From lies of tongue and pen,From all the easy speechesThat comfort cruel men,From sale and profanationOf honour and the sword,From sleep and from damnation,Deliver us, good Lord.Tie in a living tetherThe prince and priest and thrall,Bind all our lives together,Smite us and save us all;In ire and exultationAflame with faith, and free,Lift up a living nation,A single sword to thee.Verse one is striking to say the least and sets the tone for what is a VERY striking and convicting hymn. There are no platitudes here. God is high in heaven and we are low on earth and we are asking God to bow down and stoop to our level and hear our cry. Why are we crying to Him? Because our rulers here on earth are faltering failures and we as a people are drifting and dying. We are drifting and dying because our walls, made of gold in our prosperity, are actually entombing us. Scorn has become so common place that it is merely used as a weapon to divide brother against brother. We are asking God not to spare His wrath or His thunder against us but instead to take away the one thing that is causing all of this mess…our pride.Verse 2 is even more visually intense. We confess that fear is teacher and not the fear of God either. Buttressing fear as our teacher are lies both written and spoken. Speeches that are nothing more than pandering platitudes to achieve political gain are the order of the day and they ease the conscience and comfort men and women who have cruelty bound in their hearts. We ask in verse two for deliverance from many things, greed, a love of the profane, violence, the fear of man disguised as honor, laziness, and ultimately the fires of hell. We ask the Father, our good Father in Heaven to deliver us from these evils.Verse 3 shows somewhat the peculiarity of the writers connection to the Monarch and Church of England. The prince is the monarchy, the priest is the Church of England, and the thrall are those bound under the rule of the King. I’d like to quote Peter Leithart again from an article he wrote last December on the website First Things “Few hymns offer so stark a portrait of the human condition—lies, terror, cruelty disguised as niceness, tombs of gold, lazy indifference, pride. It’s stark, and very contemporary. “Swords of scorn divide”: Chesterton could have been watching CNN or Fox News, or following Twitter. Chesterton doesn’t permit a jot of sentimentality. No “Sweet Hour of Prayer” for him; his prayer is an anguished cry. He’s not looking for a gently wafting Spirit; Chesterton invokes divine thunder. He doesn’t want God to hold back, because he knows salvation lies on the far side of judgment: “Smite us and save us all.”Yes Chesterton knows a secret that the mare Hwin discovered in the book “The Horse and His Boy” In the book Hwin, who is terrified of lions, is shaking all over while Aslan, the ruler of Narnia approaches her and goes to him saying “You may eat me if you like. I’d sooner be eaten by you than fed by anyone else.” The best place to be is a willing participant under Providence of God even if that means, like Job, the life as you know it will be consumed. Okay that concludes the episode for this week. As usual I have the preceding hymn set to music I’ve recorded. In this recording, I set the hymn a new tune and one of the things I am most excited about is that I was able to record this song with my oldest daughter Eva singing the vocals with me. She is a dear girl and I hope you enjoy it. I will be back on April 5th with four simultaneous episodes for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday itself. Until then, I hope you have a blessed Lent and may these next 40 days grow you in maturity in ways only the Holy Spirit can accomplish.
Both Elizabeth and Mary, can’t quite believe it. They have known the truth, but when the good news of God’s mercy is actually fleshed out with concrete irrefutable proof they are shell shocked, happily so, but full of wonder and wow. At its root learning to relax and be happy in the mercy of God.

What fulfills you? What are you passionate about? What is success to you? These are examples of what executive leadership coaches Jennifer Davis and Elizabeth McCourt help their clients to define. This episode of the Roots of Leadership is jam packed with leadership secrets and advice from Anthony's two guests: Jennifer, the founder and CEO of Jennifer Davis Coaching, and Elizabeth, the founder and CEO of the McCourt Leadership Group. These two successful women have a laundry list of individual achievements. Elizabeth recently released her novel Sin in the Big Easy and Anthony asks her how she balances all of her different adventures. One of Elizabeth's secrets to keeping balanced is to center all of her efforts on her core beliefs - to make mindful choices, to make meaningful impact, and to exercise resilience in everything she does. Both Elizabeth and Jennifer stepped away from corporate jobs to pursue careers in coaching and leadership development. Jennifer recalls the shifting point in her life, when her family went through a difficult experience and describes it as the first time things did not go her way. While doing some soul searching, she realized that what fulfilled her the most is helping others. She went from being a “mostly recovered workaholic” to becoming a servant leader who coaches her clients seek their maximum fulfillment. Elizabeth and Jennifer connected on social media and they formed their relationship on the key principal of sharing information. They found similarities sharing that their individual journeys led them to want to work with other people to help them find their joy, passion and energy. The two coaches established a partnership and collaborated to inspire and help one another. They believe it is important to embrace change and motivate their clients to go down unexpected paths. Shelley is a Las Vegas native working at Square Atelier salon, and has been doing hair for over 15 years. In the social media world she is well known for her pastel creations, and is an educator at Hair Love Retreat. In this episode, Shelley and Elizabeth discuss what it’s like raising businesses AND babies - the challenges, the triumphs, and how to keep their children and dreams alive. “The grass isn’t greener, it just has a filter on it.” Shelley talks about how much more there is to a life than what is portrayed on Instagram - even on her own page. Of course, the hair models, travel, and cute pastel colors are Shelley’s brand, but she is also is a mother to three kids, has a husband, and two dogs. She and Elizabeth get into the nitty gritty of what her schedule looks like, and how she is able to accommodate her hairstylist life and personal life so well. Finding a flow with kids and career When it comes to raising kids and managing the career, Shelley and her husband divide and conquer. Shelley says that her husband is her best friend. When her pastel hair looks went viral on Instagram, he was nothing but supportive and told her to go for it. Both Elizabeth and Shelley talk about how important it is to not go at it alone, and to surround yourself with a support network that believes in your vision. Shelley says that if you are convinced there is such thing as balance, you’ll never feel like you’re getting there. “You have to be OK with not being perfect all the time.” In a lot of ways, Shelley feels like her kids have a lot to do with the amount of success she’s been able to have. They taught her to live off of less sleep, and they drive her to be better and work harder. Shelley says the dreaded mom guilt is always there, but says acknowledging it and embracing the good moments and parent pride can make it all worth it and encourage her to keep going. She says that taking the time to take care of yourself and treat yourself to personal time and continued education actually teaches your kids about the importance of self-care and sacrifice. The Law of Attraction and Instagram Shelley says that when it comes to Instagram, post what you love and what you are interested in. There is so much about hair and fashion that Shelley loves, and she makes sure that she is posting the things that represent what she is inspired by and loves working on. The big takeaway is to do the tightrope walk between paying attention to what your followers appreciate while staying true to who you are as an individual. If you’re interested in growing your following, continue sharing what you love and others will be drawn to it. DAY 17 | MESSIAH PRECEDED BY A MESSENGERScripture Reading: Luke 1: 57-66; Malachi 3:1, 4:5-6 Now the time had come for Elizabeth to give birth, and she had a son. 58 Then her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her his great mercy, and they rejoiced with her.59 When they came to circumcise the child on the eighth day, they were going to name him Zechariah, after his father. 60 But his mother responded, “No. He will be called John.”61 Then they said to her, “None of your relatives has that name.” 62 So they motioned to his father to find out what he wanted him to be called. 63 He asked for a writing tablet and wrote: “His name is John.” And they were all amazed. 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God. 65 Fear came on all those who lived around them, and all these things were being talked about throughout the hill country of Judea. 66 All who heard about him took it to heart, saying, ‘What then will this child become?’ For, indeed, the Lord’s hand was with him. — Luke 1:57-66 See, I am going to send my messenger, and he will clear the way before me. Then the Lord you seek will suddenly come to his temple, the Messenger of the covenant you delight in—see, he is coming,’ says the Lord of Armies. — Malachi 3:1 Look, I am going to send you the prophet Elijah before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. 6 And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise, I will come and strike the land with a curse.” — Malachi 4:5-6 There are few things more exciting than a pregnancy announcement. New life is always such a miracle; especially when the couple announcing have been trying for years. Can you imagine the celebration and shock at hearing that Elizabeth and Zachariah were expecting? Both Elizabeth and Zachariah were “well along in years” which is Bible talk for really old to be having children. But who else would God decide to carry the messenger of the coming Messiah than two geriatrics? Then again, God chose a virgin girl to carry the Savior of the world. The Messiah the people had been hoping for would not come in the way they had expected, and neither would His messenger.John’s arrival was the fulfillment of a prophecy. He was the Messenger who was to “clear the way for the Lord”. The Hebrew meaning of the name John is “Jehovah has been gracious: has shown favor”. And what incredible favor John came to proclaim, that the Creator of the Universe was coming to seek and save the lost and that the hope of our salvation would soon be realized in flesh and blood. John would later say, “I baptize with water for repentance but the One who is coming after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to remove His sandals. He Himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Matthew 3:11.Yes, people were in shock and awed at John’s arrival: a miracle pregnancy, Zachariah becoming mute and then able to speak again. Yes, John’s arrival was something quite spectacular, but how much greater would be the one John was sent to proclaim. This Christmas season, recognize that like John, you too are sent by God to point people to the Messiah. Reflection Questions: “…like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.” – C.S. Lewis. 1. We often settle for less – like the messenger instead of the Messiah. What have you chosen instead of Christ’s best for you?2. Ponder Jesus’ power and holiness - that like John, we are not worthy of removing his sandals. Humble yourself before the Messiah. Who is someone God might be sending you as His 'messenger' to this Christmas season? What are some ways you can point them to Jesus?
In this episode, Elizabeth interviews entrepreneur and salon owner, Lo Wheeler, on what it’s like to be in business with her husband. Both Elizabeth and Lo work closely with their significant others on their business, and they discuss how navigating uncharted waters in entrepreneurship with your spouse or partner can be hectic, eye-opening, and rewarding. Both Elizabeth and Lo agree that being in business with their partners has added another layer to their relationships, and has made it richer, but also more complicated. They both discuss the ongoing challenge of unplugging from the business side of things and taking time to connect as a couple. “At the end of the day and I’m thinking about all my goals, pursuits, and dreams - he’s right there with me.” If you’re thinking about going into business with your significant other, Lo recommends thinking about it big picture-style and communicate how the two of you will balance the different parts of your lives. She also recommends establishing some sort of ritual together - to disconnect and connect as a couple. For creatives and entrepreneurs, it can be easy to let your work totally consume you. Elizabeth and Lo discuss the details of how this has impacted their relationships and how they do their best to stay agile as things grow and evolve every day. “We’ve been able to support each other to surpass our own abilities than we would have separately.” Lo and Elizabeth chat about how sacrifice is a key part of achieving great things, and Lo gives excellent advice about starting each day as a new day with new focus and goals. If connecting with family is the goal that’s fine, if it’s answering emails, that’s fine too. If you want to do both, she recommends sticking to a schedule. “If you are too soft on yourself, things just don’t happen because life gets in the way.” Lo says that she is still learning how to balance being married to her business partner, and she says her current goals are to stay present, improve the quality of today, and set boundaries and goals for family life today.” You can follow Lo on Instagram here.
