With New York Theatre Barn, Joe produced the new musical Sam's Room, inspired by real stories of nonverbal teens who find a way to communicate. Héctor Flores Jr. is a multi-hyphenate Latino theatre professional whose work meets at the intersection of art and advocacy. Héctor was born in New Jersey and raised by his Puerto Rican grandmother and his single mom. Luckily his mother believes in cultural enrichment & education which instilled a hunger for knowledge, art and change within him. The artform that chose him, however, wasn't made in his image. After being a first-generation college graduate Flores embarked on a career in musical theatre that continues to inspire him to find new ways to break barriers for Latinx people.  Hector is the president of Theatre Barn Records. Theatre Barn Records is a new imprint of Broadway Records and is dedicated to original musicals in development. New York Theatre Barn, which has served as a home for new culture shifting musicals during incubation since 2007, has been evolving its unique development-based programming since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a new program of New York Theatre Barn, Theatre Barn Records will support writers in recording and releasing concept recordings of new musicals in development on global streaming platforms. Theatre Barn Records offers a worldwide marketing platform for musical theatre writers and has the potential to create revenue for writers while their show is still in development. The focus of Theatre Barn Records is to continue to incubate and elevate projects that we are already developing while evolving our storytelling systems. In this critical digital age that we now live in, EP's and concept albums of original musicals in development are potentially the fastest and most lucrative ways that musical theatre writers can now be noticed, supported, and advanced while their shows are in development.

Actress and singer Julia Murney originated the role of Queenie in Andrew Lippa's Wild Party (earning her first Drama Desk Award nomination), and later became one of the most well known Elphaba's in both the national tour and Broadway companies of Wicked. Her other New York credits include her 2005 Broadway debut in the musical Lennon, Falling (earning her second drama desk nomination), A Class Act, The Landing, Saved, Crimes of the Heart, Queen of the Mist, and Time and Again (Lucille Lortel nomination). Julia was also seen in the Actors' Fund benefit concerts of Funny Girl, Chess, Hair, and the World AIDS Day Benefit Concert Pippin. She has been featured on television in Sex and the City, Ed, NYPD Blue, 30 Rock, Elementary, Succession, and Madam Secretary, among many others. She can now be seen in the Out of the Box Theatrics production of the Tony nominated musical Baby, which opened November 14th. In addition to our wonderful chat with Julia, we had friend Andrew Lippa crash the interview! Born and raised in New York City, Julia grew up making up shows in her childhood bedroom, and fell in love with singing after joining the choir in junior high. She shares an inside look at her newest project, a revival of the 1980's musical Baby, noting the necessity for rewrites, and the beauty of having same sex and interracial couples represented on stage. She opens up about the ups and downs of playing the iconic Elphaba: from the weight of people's expectations to the extraordinary high of finishing the first act with broom in hand, aloft in a cherry picker. Julia also reunites with longtime friend and colleague Andrew Lippa, and together they share memories of their first meeting and the instant kinship they felt.  In this episode, we talk about:  Working with Baby lyricist Richard Maltby The influence of her childhood choir director  The fun of community and chosen family in theatre  Singing Meadowlark for Stephen Schwartz, accompanied by Andrew Lippa Recognizing a kindred spirit in Andrew Lippa Connect with Julia: IG: @pepamama Twitter: @JuliaMurney Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Alice Ripley is one of the heavyweights of American Musical Theatre. A Tony winner for her star-turn as Diana in the Pulitzer Prize winning musical “Next to Normal,” Alice Ripley is known world-wide for showstopping roles, including those in Side Show (for which she was also Tony nominated, alongside Emily Skinner), The Rocky Horror Show, The Who’s Tommy, Les Miserables, James Joyce’s The Dead, Sunset Boulevard, and American Psycho. She is here today promoting a one-woman monologue show, "The Pink Unicorn," at The Cell, a 60-seat venue in Chelsea. In “The Pink Unicorn,” from Out of the Box Theatrics, Alice plays Trisha Lee, a Christian widow in Texas whose world is shaken when her 14-year-old child, Jolene, announces that they are not in fact female but instead genderqueer, changing their name to Jo, launching a Gay/Straight alliance, and introducing their mom to the concept of gender-neutral pronouns. Trisha is totally thrown for a loop, hurled out of her comfort zone — and the show takes all of us though the complex journey of navigating the conservative community as well as her own biases, and the challenges of loving and accepting a child who defies expectations in service of being themselves. To quote Hunter Bell & Jeff Bowen’s quirky, brilliant musical [title of show]: ALICE RIPLEY, SHE’S FIERCE!

“If you’re aware of your body and you’re aware of how it functions - which I have illustrated I at least try and attempt to do that every day - if you are focusing on how you feel and not how you look, I think that one of those will be your ‘head’ and the rest will follow.” - Frank Hartley    This week's guest Frank was also a panelist on the Out of the Box Theatrics discussion! He is a jack of all trades and has a lot on his plate so we talk a lot about how he keeps himself SANE while still maintaining his health, jobs, and whatever else life throws at him.  This is an episode about mental health, being self-aware, and knowing your baseline for whatever it is you are going through or trying to start.
