For this Musicals Meets Podcast, Sarah Kirkup talks to Sarah Crompton, one of Britain's most respected writers and broadcasters, about the new production of Hadestown which has just premiered at the Lyric Theatre in the West End. Crompton is a huge fan of the show, having previously seen the UK production at the National Theatre and reviewing it favourably for WhatsOnStage. She recently wrote a fascinating feature on the new West End production for the current issue of Musicals magazine.  Blending modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz, the music for Hadestown is written by the acclaimed Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell. Mitchell originated Hadestown as an indie theatre project and acclaimed album before transforming the show into a genre-defying new musical alongside Tony Award-winning director Rachel Chavkin.  How has the show been reinvented this time around? What aspects work particularly well, and which performers stand out? The two Sarahs meet to discuss the production in detail.

It's time for another visit with Midday theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck, who joins us each week with her reviews of the Maryland-DC regional stage. Today, she spotlights Hadestown, the 2019 musical that won 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and that's now in a touring company production at Baltimore's Hippodrome Theatre. Written by Anaïs Mitchell (book, music and lyrics) and co-developed with director Rachel Chavkin, the musical weaves two Greek myths — one, of young lovers Orpheus and Eurydice, and another, of King Hades and his wife Persephone — into a haunting and moving musical drama. Hadestown continues at the Hippodrome Theatre through April 16.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hello, I'm Julie Burstein, the Creator and Show Runner of Live From Mount Olympus. We created Live from Mount Olympus for tweens – and their grownups – because ancient Greek myths continue to have such power today, and are such exciting stories to tell. We're incredibly fortunate to have fantastic actors from the Brooklyn Based theater company The TEAM who become the gods and heroes of the ancient world – as well as Award-winning performers such as Andre De Shields and Isabella Rosselini, along with new young voices, all directed by broadway stars as Rachel Chavkin and Zhailon Levingston. And our production team loves playing with sound effects and music to conjure a mythical world for our listeners. This season, we tell the story of Persephone, a young goddess who yearns to step out from behind her mother's shadow – and must find her own power once she does. We're delighted to share with you Episode 1: You Don't Trust Me to strike out on my own! Enjoy! The podcast is back and we're not pulling any punches. Today we sit down with recent Tony Award winner Bradley King to discuss his lighting design for 'Natasha Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812.' He traces the journey of the design from Ars Nova, where the plot was hardly more than chandeliers and lightbulbs, all the way to his massive, immersive design at the Imperial Theatre. Hear how he and director Rachel Chavkin developed the look of the show over 4 different iterations, how he ushered in the role of "Automated Light Bulb Winch Programmer" and what it's like winning a Tony for your Broadway debut. Bradley is also very active in the 829 union negotiations and he and Cory discuss the recently updated LORT contract and review the various expenses for which designers on the road can be reimbursed. And he discusses being a young designer with a growing family and how that impacts his life and work decisions. Heat up the dumplings, pour yourself some Borsht, and join us for a great chat!
