A proposed carbon capture pipeline across the Midwest by Summit Carbon Solutions is awaiting approval from Iowa and other states. Minnesota approved the permit for it last year. The five-state, $5.5 billion pipeline system would capture carbon dioxide from ethanol plants and send it to North Dakota for underground storage. As more places, including ours, pursue carbon capture projects, what rules and monitoring mechanisms need to be in place to make sure things work as intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions?Eric Schaeffer is Executive Director with the Environmental Integrity Project, which just released a report on the current federal rules for carbon capture projects — and what might be missing.

Héctor Flores Jr. is a multi-hyphenate Latino theatre professional whose work meets at the intersection of art and advocacy. Héctor was born in New Jersey and raised by his Puerto Rican grandmother and his single mom. Luckily his mother believes in cultural enrichment & education which instilled a hunger for knowledge, art and change within him. The artform that chose him, however, wasn't made in his image. After being a first-generation college graduate Flores embarked on a career in musical theatre that continues to inspire him to find new ways to break barriers for Latinx people.  Hector is the president of Theatre Barn Records. Theatre Barn Records is a new imprint of Broadway Records and is dedicated to original musicals in development. New York Theatre Barn, which has served as a home for new culture shifting musicals during incubation since 2007, has been evolving its unique development-based programming since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a new program of New York Theatre Barn, Theatre Barn Records will support writers in recording and releasing concept recordings of new musicals in development on global streaming platforms. Theatre Barn Records offers a worldwide marketing platform for musical theatre writers and has the potential to create revenue for writers while their show is still in development. The focus of Theatre Barn Records is to continue to incubate and elevate projects that we are already developing while evolving our storytelling systems. In this critical digital age that we now live in, EP's and concept albums of original musicals in development are potentially the fastest and most lucrative ways that musical theatre writers can now be noticed, supported, and advanced while their shows are in development.

Environmental Compliance and Enforcement with Environmental Integrity Projects’ Eric Schaeffer

This week, I sat down with a highly-regarded member of the environmental NGO community, Eric Schaeffer, who currently serves as the Executive Director of the Environmental Integrity Project, which he co-founded in 2002.  Previously, Eric worked for more than a decade at EPA, including a five-year stint as the Director of EPA’s Office of Civil Enforcement, which, as you will hear in our conversation, was a very formative time for his thinking. At a time when some news outlets and EPA detractors are reporting environmental enforcement numbers to be at historic lows, Eric and I had a great discussion about the possible reasons for this, as well as the other goals and methods that his organization employs to encourage compliance and help protect the environment. Throughout our conversation, we also managed to touch on EPA’s evolving enforcement strategy, how ideally to address non-compliant companies, voluntary disclosures by businesses that discover indiscretions, remote pollution monitoring techniques, and even the much-discussed idea of cooperative federalism. Eric has a well-deserved reputation for being tough but fair and honest.  His candid assessment of what is working well for EPA enforcement and industry compliance professionals and what needs improvement may surprise you.  What comes through in a very big way is Eric’s approach to analyzing and addressing issues, one that, not surprisingly, is based on the integrity of the enforcement process and a respect for the environment. Want to make money in real estate? When I’m not producing stories in Hollywood, you can find me deep-diving into the fascinating world of real estate. What may seem complicated or expensive at first really isn’t. There are dozens of ways to enter, even if you have very little discretionary money to invest. In this in-depth 2-hour podcast, I break down the strategies and approaches I personally use to build wealth with property. Some of these will be familiar to you, but I promise, many won’t! There are a lot of unique and cool ways to participate in real estate that aren’t widely known. I’m here to share those with you.  I discuss: owning vs renting, buying a house or income property, which is better and why, Airbnbs, 1031s, Delaware Statutory Trusts (DSTs), taxes, depreciation, syndications, LLCs, platform investing, debt vehicles, equity stacks, Opportunity Zones, and more. Don’t let the fancy words scare you. It’s super simple, tangible, and accessible. If you’re a creative like me, you have the need for tactile, concrete concepts like numbers and money. Our daily lives are filled with dreams and ideas that take time to come to fruition. I believe this is why so many of us in Hollywood love and play in real estate on the side. So take a listen. Even if you never ever intend to invest in real estate, you may find some nice actionable take-away for other areas of interest, especially if you own or run a business. Part 3 of 3 for filmmaker, Michael Addis' journey to writing his first book.  This time we discuss a range of topics from the qualities of cover design, how to source them or make them yourself; the importance of book titles and more importantly their sub-titles. Michael ponders whether one's life is extraordinary enough to write a book in the first place. Many books are about triumph or incredible journeys. What if you have something important to share bit isn’t mind-blowing? And what if you want to write, but aren't a writer? Michael talks to us about TEMI.com, which he uses to transcribe his audio "writing." How do you get reviews? When do you get reviews? Are they even important? Michael shares the story about the time he bought a silver jeep to appear more manly and it backfired. He proceeds to then share more stories before the guys get stuck on the new phrase, "opening the kimono."  The conversation eventually takes a very left turn when Michael talks about “opening the kimono.” Listen until the end and you'll understand. Part 2 of 3. The discussion with filmmaker, TV producer, and comedy guru Michael Addis continues on his journey to becoming an Author. What program is best to write your book in, does it even matter. How long should it be (and does that even matter too?). Get the words out first. Vomit them out. Edit later. Don't let editing paralyze you from getting all of your cluttered and disorganized thoughts out. That process of writing and getting everything out without censor and worry for grammar and spelling is important. Most writers strategize this way. We discuss how to organize your thoughts and chapters and front-loading your book with the best information. What do you do when you're already set with your book strategy and get an even better idea or approach? What is writers block? Is it even real? The hack to simply writing, no matter what it is, to get you into the mode and help clarify your thoughts.  PLEASE ENGAGE AND SUBSCRIBE TO THE PODCAST On iTunes/Apple Podcasts so I know you like the show and want to hear more episodes. Without having any fashion experience, manufacturing experience, or any experience running or starting a business; in typical producer fashion, she said, "I'll figure it out." And so she did. Matt Cook is an intellectual entrepreneur, startup wizard, published author, and savvy thought leader who has always written his own story. He's currently building a multimedia entertainment company called Braveship that is specializing in producing movies from deep intellectual properties (books, games, etc.). He's got a smart head on his shoulders with a doctorate in economics. But he's even smarter for recognizing the importance of emotional intelligence, humility, and the power of curiosity as an outsider. He's also probably about 20 years younger than you'd think based on his accomplishments and pursuits. But I'll let you take a listen and attempt to do the math.  PLEASE ENGAGE AND SUBSCRIBE Follow me on Instagram You can also access all of the different apps and platforms (11 in all) this podcast plays on here: Official Podcast Page The book "PRODUCE YOURSELF: Apply Hollywood's Proven Formula To Become The Hero Of Your Life" is available everywhere. The focus is on obstacles, side-hustles, approach, process, optimization and seeking peak performance both on set and off. This podcast is about learning to “Produce Yourself” in many areas of life, by hearing from people who have fought to get where they are in movies and television. ABOUT THE HOST: Emmy-nominated producer, Terence Michael, has produced over 20 movies and 30 TV shows (Duck Dynasty). He additionally hosts 2 podcasts about the entertainment industry. In his spare time, he invests in real estate, runs a mortgage business, has two Airbnb properties (Palm Springs and Joshua Tree) and consults entrepreneurs on how to monetize their passions and be happy in the process. Terence has been developing, producing, and delivering story content, from film to television, over the course of ownership in three separate production companies covering most of the major studios, networks, and agencies in "Hollywood." He has now produced feature films distributed by studios such as Sony, Universal, MGM, Lionsgate, and HBO; and executive produced television shows airing on networks such as NBC, Fox, MTV, VH1, Showtime, Lifetime, TLC, Spike, Esquire, Syfy, Travel Channel, and A&E.
