Rad Pereira is an old soul-young heart theater artist, writer, educator, and community activist with a very clear sense of purpose and direction --- defined by questions like: How can we imagine, and manifest alternate futures together? Was my body conditioned to survive in a world not made for me? and Can the natural world function as a moral compass? BIOI am a multi-spirit mixed Black, Indigenous Brazilian, Jewish (im)migrant artist currently based in Lenapehoking (Brooklyn). My creative practices range from social sculpture, to popular theatrical and TV/film performance, to participatory liberatory artmaking and healing that weaves together an Afro-futurist longing for transformative justice and queer (re)Indigenization of culture.I put in a lot of hours to get to where, how and why I am today, with the guidance of many mentors and dedication to cultivating an ancestor led, faithful intuition. I was trained up in Eurocentric theatre and dance on scholarship at Interlochen Arts Academy and Pace University. I kept the parts of that training which were useful and shed the constricting parts. Since then I have been building connection with my ancestral modes of creativity, storytelling and next world building. With my community I created The (Im)Migrant Hustle and produced Bang Bang Gun Amok I + II at Abrons Art Center. With their artner at You Are Here, LILLETH, they created Media Tools for Liberation at JackNY, Decolonization Rave and Cosmic Commons. In 2017 I was NYC Public Artist in Residence with my collaborators (Keelay Gipson, Britton Smith, Josh Adam Ramos), at the Department of Cultural Affairs and Children's Services working with LGBQTIA foster youth; As an actor and director, I have contributed to stories at HBO, CBS, MTV, National Black Theatre, MITU350, The Public Theater, La Mama etc., Shakespeare Theatre in DC, Pittsburgh Public Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop, ART Boston, The Bushwick Starr, Target Margin, Ars Nova, New Ohio, Clubbed Thumb, The Flea Theatre, Sesame Street, Theatre 167 and various online media platforms. As a cultural organizer and facilitator, I have collaborated with the Disney Theatrical Group, United Nations, Queens Museum, Rio de Janeiro Museum, Instituto Republica, MOCA, SITI Company Thought Center, A Blade of Grass, SUPERBLUE, Broadway Advocacy Coalition, The 8th Floor, Working Woman of Color Conference, Dance/NYC Symposium, and Culture/Shift. I have taught performance classes and workshops at Pace University, Interlochen Arts Academy, NET, Americans for the Arts and The Door.Currently, I'm the Director of Engagement and Impact with New York Stage & Film, while shifting between cultural work in performance, education, social sculpture and community organizing. Lisa Maza is a singer, actor, writer and film-maker. It is no surprise that she has accomplished such vast artistic endeavour, growing up surrounded by theatre-makers; her father being the legendary trailblazer, Robert Maza. Lisa made her stage debut at the age of eight, playing a little boy called ‘Pumpkinhead' in Robert Merritt's The Cakeman. It was the first all Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander-run production performed at the newly formed National Black Theatre, and was directed by Robert Maza. In 2007 she began co-writing with her sister, their autographically inspired theatre show Sisters of Gelam, which premiered at Malthouse Theatre in 2009. We were privileged to be joined by Gumbainggir historian, educator, activist Dr Gary Foley who for decades has played a central part in some of the most pivotal civil rights movements for First Nations justice. He's been part of community-led services including Redfern's Aboriginal legal Service, the Aboriginal health service in Melbourne, and National Black Theatre; and continues to be an outspoken advocate for First Nations' justice and self determination.  In 1972 a documentary called NINGLA-ANA: Hungry For Our Land was released - charting the history of these movements. It's since been restored and re-released, available nationally.  Hear him in conversation speaking to the legacy of Blak radical traditions, the importance of archives to envision socially-just futures, and what the hopes are for having this film being released for new generations to see. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Follow host, Salisha Thomas @salishathomas and www.salishathomas.com FAT HAM is a co-production between The Public and National Black Theatre, and reinvents Shakespeare's masterpiece Hamlet with a black, queer, and southern twist. It explores questions of identity, family, and trauma in a delectable comic tragedy directed by The Public's Associate Artistic Director Saheem Ali. The show stars Marcel Spears (CBS's The Neighborhood) as the show's modern day Hamlet– Juicy, a queer, Southern college student. Set at a backyard BBQ complete with Southern soul food , this is NOT your typical Hamlet retelling (it even ends in a drag performance). But it's an important, thought provoking play that I hope you'll come check out.   Nikki Crawford plays Tedra (based on Hamlet's Mother Gertrude) and Adrianna Mitchell plays Opal (based on Ophelia) and they are wonderful, fun, and integral parts of this retelling. My first experience with playwriting began as an adolescent adapting a story to a play. Many years later, studying acting at the National Black Theatre in Harlem, New York, I got into playwriting. We discuss the relationship between these organisations and the well known demonstrations of the time (such as the Tent Embassy). We discuss the way the ALS emerged as a response to police violence, how the Black Theatre sought to shape a national Indigenous identity, and how the ALS and AHC engaged the fight for land rights in the city.Buy the book through Aboriginal Studies Press at the AIATSIS shop.Dr Johanna Perheentupa is a lecturer in the Nura Gili Centre for Indigenous Programs at UNSW. Jillian Walker writes and often performs contemporary sacred texts for the now times. Her work creates space for healing and liberation; embodying remembrance for our ancestors and legacies. Often taking the form of plays, musicals, sacred lecture-sermon-concert gatherings, and self-reflective space, Jillian’s work pushes what we think of as genre and blurs the perceived boundaries between performer, audience and self. She draws deeply on her training as a dramaturg (MFA Columbia), Black Spiritual wisdom, and the ongoing work of black feminist thinkers to bring process-driven performance to life. Some of her works include: Sarah’s Salt. (developed at MCC Theater, Roundabout Theater Company; Honorable Mention for the Relentless Award; finalist for the 2019 Bay Area Playwrights Festival). James Baldwin was one of the most important authors, no, one of the most important human beings in the history of 20th century America. A civil rights movement activist who didn’t see himself as an activist. A man who fled the persecution and racism of the United States, only to come back over and over again because he could not stay silent about the horrors inflicted on Black Americans. He was a black man and a gay man, living during a period when both were shunned and persecuted by the country in which he was born and in which he was deeply invested. This episode contains a short history of Mr. James Baldwin, plus his 1963 speech, “The Free And The Brave”. Music is by The Bollweevils, Kira Jari and Danny Denial. Breakout star, Bria Samoné Henderson has been tapped for a recurring role alongside Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne, Sarah Paulson, Margo Martindale, Uzo Aduba, Elizabeth Banks and Tracey Ullman in the HULU/FX drama miniseries, MRS. AMERICA. The nine-episode limited series from Emmy-winning writer Davhi Waller (Mad Men) and Oscar-nominated producer Stacey Sher, tells the story of the movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), and the unexpected backlash led by a conservative woman named Phyllis Schlafly, played by Blanchett. MRS. AMERICA Henderson will play Ms. Magazine editor Margaret Sloan, an outspoken, funny, radical-thinking African American feminist and civil rights activist who marched with MLK. The out lesbian, single mother and accomplished poet, was an intersectional trailblazer in several cultural and political movements. Through the eyes of the women of that era - both Schlafly and second wave feminists Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan, Shirley Chisholm, Bella Abzug and Jill Ruckelshaus - the series explores how one of the toughest battlegrounds in the culture wars of the 70s helped give rise to the Moral Majority and forever shifted our political landscape. Henderson recently starred in the National Black Theatre's production of The First Deep Breath by Lee Edward Colston II and directed by Malika Oyetimein. She received her MFA in acting from the University of Washington's Professional Actor Training Program. Henderson likes to explore her identity as a black woman on the roles she takes on. Not only is she an actress but also a spoken word poet, playwright, and solo show artist. The work she creates or is drawn to is political, intimate, playful, and reflective. She believes that performance/theatre art is therapeutic for all people and it's one of the only forms of expression that require communion. She thinks of herself as a vessel of art with her work becoming a mirror of the truth. When she is not on set, Henderson spends her time volunteering and helping others. She has spent most of her time tutoring youth, involving herself in the community and even traveled to Africa with "For My Sister." Alongside the volunteers, Bria assisted with lessons at a Nigerian school and created youth programs for girls. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

The reason why I wanted to sit down with him NOW is because the new musical Gun+Powder, which he wrote the music for, began rehearsals this week for the world premiere production that will open at the Signature Theater in DC this January. I felt like capturing how he's feeling right now and hearing where he's at as an artist and in his life, would make for not only great conversation, but an incredible time capsule for this moment before his first step into what he refers to as, “The Big Leagues.” In our conversation we hit on things like collaboration, community, success, momentum, the starving artist mentality, and the difference between writing pop and theater music. Ross and I, before this recording, had only spent one-on-one time together, once. I'm extremely happy to say that since we sat down for this, he's become much more integrated in my life and listening back made me feel deep gratitude for the opportunity that this podcast has afforded me in a short amount of time. Before Liza takes the show out on the road, "The Peculiar Patriot" will have a run at the National Black Theatre of Harlem starting July 11. Liza, who spent two decades working with inmates at Rikers Island, tells us how "The Peculiar Patriot" came about, what it was like performing it in front of inmates and if she ever thinks we will see real prison reform in the U.S. In “The POTSie,” Tom talks about how detrimental the high temperatures that have been plaguing New York City are affecting his system — and sounds off on some online trolls offering their disproving two cents about medical marijuana. A Brooklyn Boy Interview with Steven Prescod and Moises Belizario

“A Brooklyn Boy” tells Steven Prescod’s coming-of-age story growing up in Brooklyn, New York. Born in Brooklyn’s Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood to a Grenadian mother and a Guyanese father, Steven was only one year old when his father was incarcerated. Although his single mother, Kathyann Marrast, kept him busy with sports, it wasn’t long before he found himself in trouble with the law. Despite his efforts to break free from his neighborhood’s unyielding grip, as an impressionable teenager, Steven was constantly pulled back, ultimately leading to his arrest. While facing a seven-year jail sentence, Steven could have been another statistic or another headline. However, he was given a second chance at life. After a six-week internship at The CityKids Foundation, Steven discovered the world of acting and met his mentor, former CityKids Artistic Director Moises Roberto Belizario. Together, the two set out to tell Steven’s unique yet universal story, resulting in the tale of love, family, gang violence, and self-acceptance that is “A Brooklyn Boy.” Three years ago, Steven performed an excerpt from “A Brooklyn Boy” for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during their visit to New York City. Inspired by Steven’s performance, Prince William offered to help him in any way he could, which led to a performance at The National Black Theatre sponsored by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Since then, “A Brooklyn Boy” has been performed at the U.S. Department of Education, the American Museum of Natural History, the Fox Theatre as part of President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Success Mentors Initiative inspirED Youth Leadership Lab, General Colin and Mrs. Alma Powell’s America’s Promise Summit, the Vineyard Theatre, and locally for numerous groups of New York City public school students. Straight from a successful four month run Off-Off-Broadway at East Village Playhouse, “A Brooklyn Boy” makes its West Coast debut at the Hollywood Fringe Festival.

On this podcast, on a beautiful night in Old City, I caught up with playwright, director, teacher, and actor James Ijames, whose latest play, WHITE, is enjoying a critically acclaimed world-premiere production at Norristown's Theatre Horizon. Meanwhile, this Barrymore and F. Otto Haas Emerging Artist Award winner's The Most Spectacularly Lamentable Trial of Miz Martha Washington opened at the Ally Theatre in Washington, D.C., on April 30, 2017; another, Kill Move Paradise, opens at New York's National Black Theatre on May 31, 2017. Ijames also recently won the $50,000 Whiting Award for "emerging writers who exhibit great promise." "A jazz guy"Philadelphia audiences already know he's delivered on that promise. Here we discuss the creative process and how Ijames's work was enhanced after development at PlayPenn's new-play conference. We also touch on provocation in art, a playwright's responsibility to their audience, and the Whitney Biennial's Emmett Till controversy. While WHITE traverses some rocky territory, it's very funny. Ijames explains, "I'm a jazz guy, not a blues guy." So what play does Ijames really adore? The answer may surprise you. For Wendy Rosenfield's review of WHITE, click here.
