In this thought-provoking episode, we are joined by Byron Reese, author of 'We are Agora,' and Brett Hurt, serial entrepreneur, to explore the intersections of superorganisms, technology, and human potential. The ideas presented in Byron's book, serve as a springboard to discuss how evolving technologies shape our future and the unfolding narrative of humanity.Episode HighlightsByron new book "We are Agora" explores superorganisms, drawing parallels between natural examples like beehives and emergent entities from human activity. The concept of Agora is debated in relation to Adam Smith's invisible hand, free will, and human evolution, highlighting both the areas of convergence and divergence.Human knowledge progression is traced from DNA to language to writing to the printing press to the internet, and now AI, each phase enhancing our ability to build upon previous knowledge. The role of individual kindness and positive human actions is emphasized as crucial in sustaining and advancing the societal superorganism. What's Next?Byron: “We will spread to a billion planets, and we'll populate each of them with a billion people. and each of those billion people will be empowered to live their best possible life… Every Da Vinci will paint their Mona Lisa. Every Marie Curie would make her discoveries. Everybody would be empowered to achieve the most that they could they could”Brett: “Along the way of shooting high like, whether it's colonizing other planets, where it's inventing AGI, whether it's merging with the machines, whatever it is, we will invent so many things that are so bewilderingly great and make humanity better than ever before. Brett Hurt, the CEO and co-founder of data.world and author of The Entrepreneur's Essentials: Lessons for Startup & Leadership Excellence, is a strong advocate for creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workforce in tech. Listen in as he chats with hosts, Leslie Wingo and Dr. Christine Crawford about his personal and professional journey that led his company to have a 59% female or minority-led team. After taking his prior company public and achieving a billion-dollar valuation, Brett felt a calling to do more but wasn't sure what. He talks about how he became aware of his privilege and the lack of diversity in his company after participating in a diversity and inclusion program. He realized that it was easy to hire people within his immediate social network and how hiring one diverse employee can lead to further diversity, as they bring their network to the company.Brett emphasizes the moral imperative of striving for diversity and equity in tech, particularly as one becomes more successful. He recommends deliberate hiring practices and making changes to job descriptions and company culture to attract diverse candidates. Brett's experience shows that building a diverse team not only benefits the company but also creates a more American, fun, and high-performing workplace. Hosted on Acast. We welcome back tech pioneers Brett Hurt and William “whurley” Hurley for a deep dive into the transformative influence of technological convergence. Drawing from their vast experiences, Brett and Whurley shed light on the intersection of advanced techs, such as generative AI and quantum computing, that are rapidly redefining our world. In our engaging discussion, we uncover the profound implications these emergent technologies have on industries, their role in supercharging productivity, and how they could catalyze an unprecedented surge in startup creation.Episode HighlightsThe conversation highlights a pivotal tech convergence, where AI intersects with quantum computing, Big Data, data privacy, and every other fundamental platform that has come before. Generative AI's rapid rise has been met with excitement and unease, calls for political regulation, all amidst highly divergent dystopian and utopian views.Echoing similar themes, Brett envisions AI as potentially the "biggest startup and job creation engine we've ever seen," while whurley posits it leading to a "rise of the non-creative creative class," amplifying the transformative potential of the technology.Brett highlights the importance of creativity for engineers in the AI era, suggesting that those who can combine their technical skills with imagination will thrive, while those who can't may face commoditization.Whurley's recent dialogues with DC leaders underscores Austin's growing influence in shaping national technology policy and wider industry trends. What's next Austin?Brett Hurt: “I think that we're going to have an absolute explosion in the number of startups created. And as an effect of that, a derivative explosion in the number of jobs...I really want Austin to be the leader of that.” William “whurley” Hurley: “Everybody's talented, everybody plays an instrument, everybody paints or does art or they sculpt or whatever. It is a very creative city. So when you take those kinds of people and you give them this kind of power...like absolutely, Austin is next. If we're lucky.”Episode linksWilliam “whurley” Hurley: Website, LinkedIn, Twitter, StrangeworksBrett Hurt: Website, LinkedIn, Twitter, data.world Austin Next Links: Website, X/Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn

I am beyond excited to share my conversation with today's guest, ground-breaking entrepreneur, founder, and author Brett Hurt. Brett's incredible career path includes being CEO and co-founder of data.world, a platform for modern data teamwork with the world's largest collaborative data community. Through collaboration with David Judson, Brett released the second, expanded edition of his book, The Entrepreneur's Essentials: Lessons for Startup & Leadership Excellence, on Mother's Day 2022 in honor of his mother and his wife. Brett was fortunate to have a mother who supported him in his passion for programming at a young age. She recognized his potential and even defended him against friends and family that felt he was not taking the more socially accepted career path. To this day, he considers her support to be one of the best advantages that helped him to succeed as an entrepreneur in the tech world. Now raising his own children, he has drawn inspiration from his mother's influence by encouraging his son and daughter to gravitate towards interests that inspire them, rather than pushing them towards a specific path. In my conversation with Brett, we discuss the impact that interest-led parenting has on nurturing passion in our children. Brett shares his views on why pursuing your natural calling is so important and how resiliency comes from finding your passions and sticking to them, regardless of society's opinions. In this episode, you'll hear: The benefits of allowing our children to practice their passions What Brett believes is the most important role as a parent How the three phases of entrepreneurial endeavors mirror the trajectory of pursuing your passions Why it is important to stick with your natural calling regardless of what others may think Supporting Resources: To get in contact or simply learn more from Brett you can read his blog www.lucky7.io or find him on Linkedin at Brett A. Brett Hurt, the co-founder and CEO of data.world, talks with Leighanne Levensaler, the co-head and managing director of Workday Ventures, about how the smart use of data changes a company’s culture, the early days of e-commerce, and how data.world has created the world's largest collaborative data community.
How does coding for fun lead to becoming a category king? On today's episode, Brett Hurt joins Christopher Lochhead in a riveting discussion about his story of serial entrepreneurship, the future of data, and the power of community. “There's just this serendipity that occurred in life where these things really drew me.” - Brett Hurt on how entrepreneurship pulled him in Three Things We Learned Wired to do big things Brett has always had the knack for creating things that spelled massive success from when he was young. His parents had taught him to slow down when he finally becomes successful the way he defines it. For a time he tried out his parents' lifestyle, but entrepreneurship has always pulled him in. A figure to emulate He took a three-year break from being the head of his company to be more hands-on as a father to his children. It surprised him when his ten-year-old daughter walked up to him one day to ask when he was going to start another business. He realized he was most inspirational to his daughter when he was working and not being on every field trip, and his children became data.world's first investors and are very proud of chipping in their toy money when they did. Serendipity of success He got into his first big success as an entrepreneur when he started an e-commerce site with his wife on a whim. He was feeling bored one day so he began coding an e-commerce package that he and his wife utilized for an online store. There weren't many people online back then, but a community eventually built around it. The serendipity of building the e-commerce site directly led to the first category that he entered into, which is e-commerce analytics. Hence the birth of Coremetrics, rated the #1 Web analytics solution some years later. Bio: Brett is the CEO and co-founder of data.world. Brett Hurt is the Founder and CEO of Data.World, a platform that allows people to openly share data and collaborate on the data sets. Data.World is a BCorp and is on a mission to democratize the access to data and enable organisations and people to make an impact with data.
Today we have the amazing pleasure to sit down and learn from one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world, and local Austinite, Brett Hurt. One of the very first companies Brett started was CoreMetrics.com which was eventually purchased by IBM for $300 million. The next company he started is one that you’ve probably heard of… BazaareVoice.com which was started in 2005, and then went public in 2012 in a billion Dollar IPO. And today, he’s at it once again as he attempts to revolutionize the most valuable industry in the world… Data. Data is information, and information is priceless. Facebook is one of the most valuable companies in the world, because they control more information about human beings, than any other company on the planet. Wall Street lives and breaths on information about the markets, companies, and trends. And the world’s governments spend hundreds of billions per year on gathering information about their enemies, their allies, the economy, and the environment. Data has never been more abundant or more valuable, and yet there are two massive problems… First, data’s value can only accessed be if you can accurately analyze it and apply what it’s trying to tell you. 99% of us have an incredible amount of data available to us about our businesses, our customers, and our marketing campaigns, and yet most of us haven’t tapped into that power in any kind of deeply strategic or useful way. The second problem, is that all of the information currently being produced by the world, is fragmented and separated into private silos and databases, which prevents it’s true value and potential from every being realized. Well Brett’s new company, Data.world was created to change that. Their goal is to collect the world’s data, and organize it in a manner that’s truly useful and accessible. It might not sound like the most exciting subject matter in the world, until you realize that whoever controls the world’s data, and can successfully interpret what it’s revealing, has the ability to outperform all competitors, and even predict the future. Data.world could very well become that company. Please help me welcome, Brett Hurt. Today, we are interviewing Brett Hurt, the co-founder and CEO of data.world. To say Brett has accomplished a lot at a relatively young age would be an understatement. Brett has been a part of launching five start-ups, and, with the help of three co-founders, has just launched his sixth. Brett grew up in a household of entrepreneurs. His dad was the inventor of the first-ever halogen fishing light. At age seven, Brett was given his first computer and began programming. This was the beginning of what would become a lifelong pursuit of Brett Hurt seeking to understand how things work. Between ages 7 and 21, Brett spent close to 40 hours per week programming. He credits his parents, in particular his mom, with supporting him and helping him find his true passion. This passion led him to the co-founding of Bazaarvoice where he served as the President & CEO for 7 ½ years and the eventual IPO in 2012 — rated one of the top five IPOs in 2012 by the Wall Street Journal. Brett’s current project, data.world, is squarely focused on building the most meaningful, collaborative, and abundant data resource in the world.
