BUCKET LIST: 100-mile Pub Crawl along the South Downs Way, England

In this Bucket List episode, host Aaron Millar recounts the most audacious, tipsiest, and ridiculous hike of his life: a 100-mile pub crawl across the entire length of the South Downs National Park, near his hometown of Brighton England. “Should you ever happen to find yourself walking with only one boot on in the middle of the night,” Aaron writes, “the one thing you don't want to read when you open the guidebook is – ‘the path climbs gently through a field of stingy nettles and large piles of cow dung.' Nonetheless, having undertaken the challenge of walking the entire 100-mile length of the South Downs Way, from Eastbourne to Winchester, this was precisely where I found myself on only my second day on the trail.” The South Downs Way has been walked by traders, drovers, and pilgrims for hundreds of years. Because of that a network of old Coaching Inns has sprung up along the trail where weary travelers could rest for the night, grab some dinner and pint of ale. Centuries later many are still standing, and it's possible to walk the entire trail stopping at them for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a few drinks in between. 100-miles – shoeless or not – is a long way, but it's worth every inch of the effort because this part of the world is overflowing with gentle landscapes, ancient history, and warm welcoming people. Not to mention a good pint or two. DO THIS PUB CRAWL YOURSELF! You can find out more information about the South Downs Way, and South Downs National Park at www.southdowns.gov.uk It's possible to work out the route of the pub crawl yourself, or drop Aaron a line for the insider tips: info@armchair-explorer.com CONNECT WITH US If you enjoy the show, please subscribe on whatever podcast player you're reading this on right now. Send us a textSeries 2, Episode 21Today the boys have another special guest Federico Barbarossa who is hoping to make a documentary on Homophobia especially in the popular seaside town of Brighton England. Using his personal experiences Federico is hoping to pitch his documentary to mainstream TV here in the UK, having already recorded many interviews with friends, special guest and local business owners. We address today Homophobia in Brighton and generally in our communities and are surprised how this seems to be on the increase mainly down to social media. What is the official definition of homophobia? The homophobia definition is the fear, hatred, discomfort with, or mistrust of people who are lesbian, gay, or bisexual.Homophobia, like most phobias, is distinguished by an irrational fear of gay people or gay behavior. Gays have fought long and hard for the rights we have had recognised under our Constitution...but make no mistake about it.... homophobia and anti-gay attitudes are alive and well across our land and around the world.Coined by George Weinberg, a psychologist, in the 1960s, the term homophobia is a blend of (1) the word homosexual, itself a mix of neo-classical morphemes, and (2) phobia from the Greek φόβος, phóbos, meaning "fear", "morbid fear" or "aversion". Weinberg is credited as the first person to have used the term in speech.#getheartcharged#charliekirkman# Stroke# Subarachnoid hemorrhage#Mediastinal Germ Cell Tumour#Prostate Cancer#Bronchiectasis#CharcotmarietoothDisease#Emphysema#The after life#Ghosts#Spirts#Ouija boards#Mediums#Psychics#Reincarnation#HeartTransplant#EbsteinsAnomaly#RareCondition#HealthJourney#LifeChangingDiagnosis#MentalHealth#Vulnerability#SelfCompassion#PostTraumaticGrowth#MedicalMiracle#BBCSports#Inspiration#Cardiology#Surgery#Podcast#HealthcareCheck out our website at www.whostomanddick.com

If you appreciate conversations about detransition, you're not going to want to miss this episode. Today we are graced by an elder psychotherapist who has been helping people with transition regret, including men who have had irreversible surgeries, revert to living as their biological sex ever since I was a child. Bob Withers is a Jungian analyst with over 35 years' experience as a psychotherapist. During that time he has worked with several transgender people in various stages of transition and detransition. He has written a series of articles about that work including the 2020 article ‘Transgender Medicalization'. Bob is a former senior lecturer on the University of Westminster's master's program, where he specialized in the history and philosophy of the mind/body relationship in medicine. He is also co-founder of The Rock Clinic, a charitable, community based psychotherapy and counseling service in Brighton England, where he lives. In this episode, we explore from a depth psychology perspective the various reasons people seek “transition,” ranging from internalized homophobia and auto gynephilia, to abusive fathers and fear of toxic masculinity, to insecure attachment and even psychosis. Plus: what are therapists trying to avoid in ourselves by colluding with trans medicalization? And what can we learn from therapists who worked during the era of lobotomies? In this conversation, Bob mentioned two books, both by Michele Moore and Heather Brunskell-Evans, which Bob wrote chapters of. Hello to you listening in Brighton, England!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday.I volunteer as a docent at Admiralty Head Lighthouse.   Back in the days of sailing ships entering the Strait of San Juan de Fuca from the Pacific Ocean the captain would know to pull a hard right to starboard when he saw the blazing beacon from the Lighthouse high on a bluff 127 feet above Admiralty Inlet so he could steer his ship safely south to Puget Sound and on into Seattle. Each lighthouse - no matter where in the world - has its very own distinctive light pattern, or signature. Lighthouses mark points of navigation, warn about dangerous coastlines, and guide ships into a safe harbor. But not all harbors are created equal for all boats. Some are for deep draft vessels, others for pleasure craft, and so on. Here's the thing about a lighthouse: it doesn't run up and down the coast beckoning all boats to its harbor. It serves a particular sized boat.Question: As you close out this year prepare your business to Begin Anew in 2022 by remembering: Lighthouses don't chase boats; why do you chase clients? Ask yourself: What is it only you have to offer? Who needs it  and wants it? How will you attract your particular client with your own distinctive beacon of light? And, how will they know you are signaling them? Once you have your answers, you will be well on your way to business success. 60 Seconds is your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that. This is the place to thrive together. Come for the stories - stay for the magic. Russell is one of the most interesting characters I've interviewed. Sometimes painfully self-aware, the discussion gives you a good idea of the nuanced world of yoga in utter technicolour honesty as Russell is well known for now as co-host of the Finding Harmony Podcast with his wife Harmony Slater. Russell was one of the fairly old batch of student who studied directly with Pattabhi Jois. We chat about the yoga scene back then, amongst other things as well as his own evolution as a student and a man. We discuss his practice now as he deals with the results of pushing his body too hard over the years. Russell has been practicing and teaching Ashtanga yoga for more than 25 years. He is a humble and refined teacher, he was given Authorization by Sri K Pattabhi Jois in 2005. Case is known for his joking spirit, and his perpetual eye toward social justice work. When Pattabhi Jois invited him to his pranayama class in 2007, he considered this distinction to be the highest grade.  Russell has been teaching Ashtanga Yoga in the Mysore Method since 2001. He has taught programs in NYC, Brighton - England, Taipei - Taiwan, San Francisco, and was Director of the Ashtanga Yoga Mysore program at Stanford University for nine years. He worked as the Director of Partnerships for the Pure Edge Foundation, a non-profit company that brings yoga-based exercises and mindfulness programs into schools throughout the USA. Russell is known for his creative delivery of experiential presentations on neuroscience for social and emotional learning. Russell Case brings to life the teachings of yoga and mindfulness in a very colorful and scientific way that makes it easy for students to understand the deeper dimensions of why yoga works and how. Today, Wednesday October 21 - It was on this same day, October 21, 1885, that James Hannington, a young man from Brighton England, was taken captive by warriors from the lawless Mwanga tribe as he was attempting to cross Africa to go to Uganda to share the good news of Jesus Christ. Over the next few days, he laid beaten, hungry and eaten by swarms of insects and lice in a hut with no ventilation. He wrote a brief diary which was later found. He wrote that he found strength and courage from reading prayers from the Psalms, especially Psalm 27 and 30. On October 27, he wrote, "I am very low; it looks so dark. I don't know what to think, and would say from the heart, "Let the Lord do what seemeth Him good." On October 29, he recorded, I was held up by Psalm 30, which came with great power. A hyena howled near me last night, smelling a sick man, but I hope it is not to have me." That was his last entry. That day they killed him. Most of us have never heard of this brave and faithful man, but today we should be encouraged and motivated by his testimony to cry out to God in the midst of our trials and sufferings, using the prayers of Psalms to aid us. God bless!

Brighton - EnglandBrighton is a constituent part of the city of Brighton and Hove, a former town situated on the southern coast of England, in the county of East Sussex. It is best known as a seaside resort and is positioned 47 miles south of London. It was created from the neighbouring but formerly separately governed towns of Brighton and Hove. This Episode contains the Hometown Murder Cases of:The Babes in the Wood Murders were the murders of two nine-year-old girls, Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadaway, on 9 October 1986, by a 20-year-old local roofer, Russell Bishop in Wild Park, Moulsecoomb, Brighton, England. Bishop was tried and acquitted in 1987. The case remained open until 10 December 2018, when Bishop was found guilty of the murders in a second trial. The investigation into the two girls' murders is the largest and longest-running inquiry ever conducted by Sussex Police.Nicholas von Hessen (born Nicholas Marcel Hoogstraten, better known as Nicholas van Hoogstraten; born 25 February 1945) is a British businessman and convicted criminal involved in property. Van Hoogstraten is known for his property empire as well as his life history: in 1968, he was convicted and sent to prison for paying a gang to attack a business associate. In 2002, he was sentenced to 10 years for the manslaughter of a business rival; the verdict was overturned on appeal and he was subsequently released, but in 2005 he was ordered to pay the victim's family £6 million in a civil case. He has been estimated to be worth £500 million, although he claims his assets in the UK have all been placed in the names of his children. The Brighton trunk murders were two murders linked to Brighton, England, in 1934. In each, the body of a murdered woman was placed in a trunk. The murders led to Brighton being dubbed "The Queen of Slaughtering Places" (a play on "The Queen of Watering Places").

Brighton is generally accepted as the ‘queer capital’ of the UK, with an estimated 15% of all adults identifying as gay, lesbian or bisexual, and a thriving queer scene. That’s part of the reason it was such a shock when lesbian bar, The Princess Victoria (otherwise known as The PV), closed its doors. I caught up with radio presenter (and founder of Brighton Gin!) Kathy Caton to discuss the beloved bar, her first days in Brighton, and getting kicked out for disorderly behaviour!

Songwriters Guild Live is a weekly radioshow in Amsterdam, focussed on artists who write their own songs. This week your host was Ro Halfhide. Bubblegum Slut/ UK: « A paradoxical mix of a Yorkshire man’s Northern bluntness that tells it like it is and a “continental poetic tongue which educates and stirs…! » - Stylusmag/ Canada: « Berry has a keen intellect, a disdain for those buffered from reality, and an internalized anger that fuels the vitriol in every adjective. It is real life undecorated, and smoulders like the everyday pressures. This is fucking brilliant. Clean glass please, and leave the bottle! » With the aid of an acoustic guitar or piano he sits centre-stage and recounts with his powerful seducing voice the tales of his life on the back streets of Leeds/England, his touring years through to his crippling road accident in Brighton/ England. In the 80s he was the guitarist & founding member to the successful Rock/Goth band, The Rose of Avalanche, which produced many great albums and singles. Eventually enough was enough and he broke up the band in the 90s and embarked on a solo career under his own name. He played in every possible venue in the UK and Europe. 3 solo albums later (PJB, Ginnel and Nations) which saw him support giants of the songwriting genre such as Frank Black, Vic Chestnutt, Kevin Coyne, David Bowie, Howe Gelb, Townes Van Zandt, he is now back. After rehabilitating from his accident, he has a new album ‘Spitfire Jukebox 1’. It’s mainly one instrument and voice that give a beautiful raw insight to the human soul. It reveals a personal account of the last few years. Touches on a cathartic necessity to get through the nightmare of his road accident to the celebration of life itself. Recorded in Berlin in the vast hall of the famous UFO-Studios, an old brewery which doubled-up as a bunker in the second world war. «when I arrived at the studio in Berlin, there was this colossal old hall that just had ‘something’ that moved me. So, I said to the man, get me a chair, put it in the middle of the hall and record me bleeding….» «the whole point of this album was to be in control and do everything myself - for good or bad - no rules and no bull shit! Just me and my demons>>
