Over summer, the news cycle slows as much as the days do - and there's more time to mix and mingle on news sites. A few weeks back, the discussion about New Zealanders skipping over the ditch for better opportunities came up again after the Western Australian Government announced it would offer New Zealand tradies $10,000 to make the move. They need more houses in the west and want Kiwis to help build them. $10,000 is some distraction from the fact you'll be working in crazy hot temperatures. I have no issue with New Zealander's wanting to advance their careers, have new experiences or grow as a person by heading off for a new phase of their lives somewhere else. When you live at the bottom of the world, the call to experience the rest of the world is strong. Australia is an obvious place to start. It's different but as familiar as you can get. But as I scrolled my way through the Aussie news websites, I noticed they're dealing with the same challenges as us. While we have similar economic conditions, Australia has been able to weather them better than we have, but it hasn't been a breeze. Last week, the Sydney Morning Herald ran stories on Sydney's housing crisis, and on the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad' increasingly being tapped to help younger people through the cost-of-living crisis. Their trains don't run too often either, their beaches are shut due to pollution and effluent waste, they have race issues, and the weather - 70,000 lightning strikes were reported on Wednesday. Australia's construction industry is suffering like ours, with Melbourne's Herald Sun reporting on a property giant's collapse, that Australia is grappling with a mortgage-led surge in calls to the National Debt Helpline, and there's a shocking rise in hospital workers being attacked. Sound familiar? On Brisbane's Courier Mail there were stories about TikTok stars and NRL players' drink driving charges, snakebites, fire bombings and infrastructure woes. There was some good news though - Brissie debuted on Time Out's Best 50 Cities in the World List for 2025. Credit where credit is due - none of our cities made the list. All-in-all, it was a reminder that the grass may not be much greener on the other side of the ditch. For sure, you can make Australia work to your advantage - just the size of the place means more jobs. But to make the move work, you need to end up in the right place for your circumstances, with the right job and affordable living which allows you to get ahead. As one of my talkback callers said to me during Summer Afternoons - you might be able to have a BBQ any night of the week because you know the weather will be great - but there's more to consider. But if Kiwis decide to make the move, they'll feel right at home. Reading all these papers, I learned the Aussies whine about stuff as much as we do. “Best club and supporter base and most passionate fans in the AFL. It was the incentive to come to Collingwood.” Is Lachie being a little too Lobb-like? Time to Restump Podcast that and whatever we can scratch up and masquerade as Freo content.  We've closed the door on the Lachie Shultz love-fest. Sure, his interview at Collingwood was probably edited with cherry pickings but that is not getting in the way of a villainous narrative. He's not exactly dead to us but he's off the Christmas card list and almost in the Rory Lobb basket! Fixtures are starting to leak out. Is there anything the AFL doesn't milk dry? We've got a tough home game against Brissie to kick things off and we're off to the Northern Territory later in the year. Zero round? Is there a potential the AFL is biting off its nose to spite its face? Is it watering down the spectacle and occasion of the traditional round one?The strategic plan… how are we actually travelling? Have we deviated from where they thought we would be? Can we still tick off the boxes with two years to run? From a wider, all-encompassing perspective, what is the feeling of the fans about the current Fremantle club? Do fans feel part of the club? Is there that deep emotional tie or are there degrees of separation?  Oscar McDonald has joined the purple and Jeremy Sharp looks like he's days away from doing the same. Handy gets for no cost.Josh Corbett is done for 2024 after a hip injury that came with little to no detail. The Chief has been some digging around to try and find out what actually happened to Ronnie Corbett. Bailey Banfield got engaged after getting his beautiful partner to say yes. We couldn't be happier for him but we're disappointed he didn't get down on one knee wearing the sub vest.  So, there's all of that and no doubt plenty more of the stuff no one asked for or will benefit from! Are we podcasting anything truly enlightening? Probably not! But hey… the bottom of the content barrel isn't going to scrape itself! So, if you've set the listening bar low, then join us as we try and inject some much-needed purple nonsense into the offseason airways! Support the show

This week we look at two apartment blocks that it's pretty safe to say are at the opposite ends of the social spectrum. The first is a Housing Commission block that has just won the NSW Premier's architecture award, stimulating serious high-rise envy and which could be an antidote to Nimbyism as well as the new form of property selfishness, ANTE …“And Not There Either”. (We call it ANOTE in the podcast, but, hey, it's new to us too!)At the other end of the scale,  there's the block being built in Brisbane which is six levels of whole-floor apartments that allow you to park your car next to your home.Seriously.  You drive into the parking bay, the lift takes the car up to your floor and you drive the vehicle into a glass-walled garage that allows you to drool over it from the comfort of the adjoining pad.  And let's face it, if you can afford $9million for a flat in Brissie, your car is likely to be pretty drool-worthy. We have an animated chat about whether Housing Commission tenants should be allowed to put their subsidised apartments on Airbnb (or similar holiday rental websites). And we discuss how dubious, non-academic surveys are of little value except to generate clickbait stories to promote the purveyors of “lies, damned lies and statistics”. That's all in this week's Flat Chat Wrap.____________________________________________________Flat Chat is all about apartment living, especially in Australia.Find us on Facebook and Twitter and the Flat Chat website.Send comments and questions to mail@flatchat.com.au.Register to ask and answer questions about apartment living anonymously on the website.Recorded by Jimmy Thomson & Sue Williams; Transcribed by Otter.ai; Transcription tidied up and sensified by Raphie.Find out more about Sue Williams and Jimmy Thomson on their websites.

Season 2 Episode 11: WARNING: A fatality is discussed in this episode.“Back to your techno days, Trajce,” says Alan. “I have a friend who organises amazing movie stunts,” says Sara. “Are you up for a ‘burn'?” asks Trajce. “With gel lathered all over the body and you light yourself on fire?” queries Sara, “I'll try anything once!”she proclaims.Music videos and movie sets: the team debate a case resulting in a fatality during a hip hop music clip film. What is the appetite for human factors, safety management, and work systems design in movie making and on reality TV shows? The mugs from backwater Brissie explore the web of responsibility when a sawn-off shotgun is chosen for use among a suite of armament on the set of a music clip and its use leads to a fatality. Is the onus on a person when something goes wrong (as Trajce agitates), or is it a system of work that requires analysis (like Sara postulates and Alan suggests that he might use in defense)? For more on reality TV, listen to Season 2 Episode 8.

Radical Australia

This week's guest on Radical Australia is a well-known and well-loved progressive activist who gets himself around the land quite a bit: Andy Paine. Andy says he has a restless soul and it has recently taken him to northern Iraq to witness some inspiring political action. Andy now finds himself at 4ZZZ in Brissie where he has been for 10 years and produces a show on Fridays called The Paradigm Shift, a show that envisions other possibilities. Andy got his activist straps during the Adani campaign where they lived a communal life on property near the site and disrupted works while modelling other kinds of community life, figuring out how they could work. Andy says he has had a good life full of adventures and has done many remote recordings along the way to capture them. Interview by Kris PetersMagic Dirt have been a mainstay on the Australian music scene since their formation in 1991.They quickly became regulars on the touring circuit, appearing at festivals such as Big Day Out, Livid and Homebake, in the process earning a solid reputation as an energetic and formidable live unit, led by the charismatic and highly talented Adalita Srsen on vocals.Age has not wearied Magic Dirt, who are one of the main drawcards at Spring Loaded at the Sandstone Point Hotel on June 3 which features a host of iconic Australian bands including Spiderbait, Ratcat, Shihad, Frenzal Rhomb, Screamfeeder, Bodyjar and Eskimo Joe.HEAVY caught up with Adalita recently to celebrate the enduring goodness of Aussie rock bands."I can't wait!", she enthused. "Playing with all our mates and playing up in Brissie is always good for us Melbournites. We love going up there. We've done the festival a few times now and it's such a great feel. All our mates are all together - we used to play a lot back in the day. We used to do the Big Day Out's and Livid's and Homebake all together, all the time. This lineup is literally the Big Day Out lineup, the Aussie version. So it's like the Little Day out, but Ratcat are playing as well, who we are all so excited to see. They were the kind of Godfathers of pre-grunge and all that sort of stuff and they influenced a lot of the bands so we are all super fanning out to see Ratcat (laughs). It's gonna be huge. We haven't done Queensland in a while, so there's so many reasons to be looking forward to this show."In the full interview Adalita runs through the other bands on the bill and her best memories of playing with them, the importance of all Australian festivals like Spring Loaded, what we can expect from Magic Dirt on the day, the longevity of Aussie bands and why they are still relevant, upcoming plans and more.

The captain has had it rough of late and copped his share of heat but let's not forget how good he actually is. Never a better time to respond than when you're entering the Lion's den. Time to Restump Podcast preview Saturday's rumble in the Brisbane jungle. There is a lot of Docker disappointment and disenchantment around and for a season full of, so far, failed expectations, it is understandable. However, sometimes you need the almost impossible challenge to snap you out of the trance. There is arguably no bigger challenge right now than meeting the current Lions on their home Gabba deck. It is a ridiculously tough task any time but, at the moment, when the Brissie boys have gone all in over the last three weeks, clicked up a gear and set their season up… it's an even scarier proposition. Add to that that we're just 4 wins from 15 attempts at the Gabba… holy Christmas! We welcome back the vitally important Switta who should add some much needed speed and bite while the Disco has been asked to join in and bring his dance moves. Freddy is out for a month with the quad injury and Corey Wagner has been given a spell in the twos. The milestone men, Jimmy Aish and Jaegar O'Meara, each play their 150th. And coincidently they both play it at their third club and in the state they both started their careers in. If you listened to their press conference today you kind of got the feeling Jaegar is about to release the shackles.    As far as the game goes, who stops Charlie Cameron? Can we at least curtail our former man, Lachie Neale? Recent dog Josh Dunkley is a handful, Joe Daniher is in decent nick, Jack Gunston can get under or over your guard and while Cam Rayner has been in the system a while now, he's starting to show why he went at pick number one in 2017. We could go on and on because on paper the Lions have heat on every line. No shortage of happenings, the Dees are going hard to get pick one, Jacob Weitering coughed up a few bucks, Tassie looks like they're getting a Stratco shed and the Sicilian might just get a Sicilian welcome next time he ventures to the Apple Isle. Plenty going on, except panic. There's no panicking going on, the panic button has not been pressed! So, all that in further detail and a $750 million dollar Tassie shedload more in this 45 minutes. It's been a negative week but we're at that point of the cycle where we're moving into hope and optimism. If you're keen to throw away some valuable minutes of your life…. you couldn't do much worse than listening to this nonsense.  Support the show

In 1944 Lou Brissie was hit with an artillery shell and his lower leg was shattered in 30 pieces. The doctors wanted to amputate his leg but he refused, telling them he was a pitcher with a shot to play in the majors. After two years and 23 surgeries Brissie was signed by the Philadelphia A's. He did make it to the majors where he pitched for seven years and even appeared in an All-Star Game. What an amazing story of grit and determination that we can all learn from. Radical Australia

This week we're delighted to welcome Brian Laver onto the show. Brian is a long-standing anti-war activist and anarchist from 1960s UQ. He is the Director of the Institute for Social Ecology and has been a part of the fabric of Brissie's radical community for a very long time. In this conversation we find Brian reflecting on his time in Prague '68 and as an international tennis coach, just down the road from Trumpy's place. What a life. Our words don't do him justice - best let Brian speak for himself. Thanks for coming on the show, Brian, and we look forward to you gracing us again once your autobiography is complete. Cheers, mate!

When I say the name Ed Kuepper, what comes to mind? The Saints? Laughing Clowns? The Aints? Maybe his prolific solo career, or his work crafting beautiful soundtracks for the big and small screen. Born in Germany, and raised in Brissie, Ed Kuepper is a living legend of the Australian underground, and his impact on the artists that have followed stretches decades. In 2021 he marks 45 years as a recording artist, so I thought it was high time he joined me to Take 5. While his work has travelled from punk to avant garde jazz and beautifully languid guitar, I was curious about the songs that fuelled him, over five decades of making music. Some of these songs make total sense, others are total brilliant curveballs. Grounding it all is the rumbling voice of one of our greatest guitarists, songwriters, and storytellers. It's fair to say that when I mention the name Patience Hodgson, you're likely to break into a smile. That's because the front woman for The Grates has always had the kind of energy that's infectious. Whether you see her live, follow her on social media or hear her chatting on her podcast or in an interview, the joy that radiates from Pae is undeniable. Over more than a decade, Patience has entertained with her powerful voice and energetic presence, often dressed in wild colours and costumes bringing playfulness to every show. Along the way, she's opened a business feeding south side Brisbane foodies, and started a family with her bandmate John. The Grates started quite literally as a garage band in the suburbs of Brissie, and music has taken Patience all over Australia and the world. With that in mind, and with a tour celebrating the 10th anniversary of their album Teeth Lost, Hearts Won, I asked Pae to Take 5 with “growing pains”. Songs that have sound tracked a turning point, that marked a moment of growth or change in her life. It's a life that has taken to her to some very high, but also pretty low places…  the honesty you'll hear in this Take 5 from Patience is raw, and it may be a challenging listen for some. TISM were one of the biggest Australian bands of the 90's. They were the godfathers of musical comedy, captains of satire and frankly, a band that when I listen to today, I'm still gobsmacked by. They hailed from Melbourne but played all over; masked men who would put on insane shows full of bizarre concepts and songs like “Defecate On My Face” and “Saturday Night Palsy”. TISM were the ultimate shit stirrers, and we loved it. Humphrey B Flaubert AKA Damian Cowell reminded us of why the 90's helped a band like that flourish, and share five songs from the zeitgeist himself. From pop princesses to Brissie bands that have never played by the rules, it's not only one of the funniest Take 5's you'll hear but a capture of a unique and wonderful time in Australian music.
