The kids are annoying, the laundry piles up, your toddler is screaming, dinner hasn't been made and you just walked in the door from work. It's "Wine Thirty!" you say as you pour yourself a glass of red, escape and breathe a sigh of "God give me strength." Another day you're overwhelmed by the to-do list, you feel like an Uber driver, the day ends and you pour yourself a glass of Pinot Grigio to take the edge off while you escape to Netflix with your partner. Seems pretty normal and harmless... or is it? I've been there. I found myself buying a bottle of 2 Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's to make a Bolognese sauce and found myself finishing it off throughout the week each night. Because why waste 2 Bucks, right? Then I'd do my grocery shopping and found myself putting a bottle in my cart with no plans to make a Bolognese sauce. It took the edge off after a long day managing toddler, home and work-life. It was only a small glass in a jelly jar each night. So what's the big deal? I mean, it's all over social media. Moms have it rough. We are told that we deserve the wine. Or the White Claw. Or the vodka. We see on our feed that moms need this to cope with mom-life. Parenting seems to be unbearable without the "mommy juice"... so I hear. Are we incapable of dealing with the stress of motherhood without it? Do I think wine and spirits are terrible, evil, and poison? Nope. Just like anything in life, I believe in moderation. Making sure we are connected to WHY we are drinking beyond the simple cocktail with friends. Today we aren't judging, preaching, or making anyone feel bad. Nope. Not here. Today we are just having a discussion. Because I believe we are more than a glass of wine. Or a bottle. We have tools to cope, we just may not know what they are. We scroll through social and try to connect with other moms with these messages that in order to survive we need to escape with drinking alcohol. We can't survive our mornings without coffee and we can't survive our evenings without wine. I want us to reconnect with how we handle our challenges with motherhood- together. You are stronger than you think you are. I'd love to connect with you after you listen. To hear your thoughts, listen to your story, and support you. 100%. In 2001, I was in San Diego at the iconic Jack Murphy Stadium playing for the Oakland A's...  Batting practice had just concluded, and I saw this very attractive young lady holding court behind home plate… She was entertaining a group of sponsors and just seemed to have a presence about her that was incredibly warming and immensely impressive. I sat on the dugout bench and became mesmerized as she captivated everyone's attention. My teammate, Mark Bellhorn, then came and sat beside me then chimed in...  “You don't have the balls to talk to her.”  Just as he said that, she led the group off the field and into the stands through the home side, so even if I did have the nut sack, communication was no longer possible... As soon as we got back to the locker room, I pulled out a 100 dollar bill and gave it to Bellhorn. I told him to keep the 100 if I don't find a way to talk to her the next day, and if I did, all I wanted was my 100 back. The following day, BP concluded again and she was in the same spot behind home plate entertaining a different group... This time, I asked a man who was nearby to please tell the girl that I had a question and would love it if she could quickly come by the dugout.  The man walked over, got in her ear and then with an eye roll and reluctant look, she made her way to the dugout...  When she arrived, I figured out she was working for the Pad Squad (think community relations meet cheerleaders) and said... “How can I help you?”  Completely flustered, I became tongue tied for one of the first times in my life and then panicked... I frantically looked around and reacted to the first thing I saw, which was a cute little boy sitting a few feet down from me...  “Ugh... This is my little buddy that wanted to meet you!”  She responded... “That's funny, because I already know him... Hi Caden!”  The kid then immediately chimed in...  “Hi Tarah!”  Damn... I was caught red handed and had no choice but to fess up... “Sorry... I wanted to meet you but got really nervous when you walked over here so decided to use little Caden here as a prop... I'm Eric.” Small talk ensued and we ended up meeting at In Cahoots later that night for some country line dancing and a couple of adult beverages...  I got her number and it was a good thing because I got sent down to Sacramento the next day when I got to the ballpark. The following week she was making a road trip to see her best friend Nicole in Berkeley, so I convinced her and her other best friend, Amanda Panda, to make a pit stop in Sacramento. When they arrived, she was as awesome as I could have ever hoped for... That's when Amanda broke the news that Tarah was “Miss Greater San Diego” and then revealed she was going to compete in the “Miss California” pageant the next month. Over that month our relationship developed quickly and I even sent her flowers before the competition knowing damn well that even as awesome as she was, the chances of her winning Miss California competing against 100 other girls were slim to none...  Guess I should have known better. She won.  Fast forward about 19 years, 3 kids and a lifetime worth of experiences together, I can say with the greatest conviction that I couldn't have asked for a better wife and mother to my 3 children. As you can probably imagine, I am not always the easiest person to deal with and if there was ever anybody on earth that has the strength, courage and stamina to keep up with my ass, it's Tarah...  So, why today did I decide to bore you Daily Hustlers with this sappy Jack Murphy, In Cahoots, Sac Town, Beauty Pageant love story?  Well... Today just so happens to be Tarah's 40th B Day and it's a chance to celebrate somebody who constantly brightens up my life and the lives of all those who have ever spent time around her. She is the rock of our family, an omnipotent wizard of useless knowledge and her selflessness is truly an inspir...

Monique Cellars Sauvignon Blanc 2018

CheapWineFinder Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 25, 2020 10:13

The StoryThe Monique Cellars Sauvignon Blanc 2018 is a Trader Joe's $6.99 exclusive sourced from vineyards in the Central Coast AVA of California. This is a wine made for Trader Joe's by the Central Coast Wine Warehouse which is part of  Thornhill Companies. The Central Coast Wine Warehouse has been working with Trader Joe's for years. The Central Coast Wine Warehouse is a winery that produces retail brand wines, store brands, contract wines, you name it and they also own some of the most acclaimed vineyards in the Central Coast AVA. They are a 5th generation wine family with roots going back to the late 1800s. When we first started Cheapwinefinder.com it seemed that every other wine that Trader Joe's sold was either made by Bronco wines (2 Buck Chuck) or the Central Coast Wine Warehouse. Here is a link to a review for another Central Coast Wine Warehouse/Trader Joe's wine, the Flower Keeper Sauvignon Blanc from the Monterey AVA. Which was another well-priced Sauv Blanc from the Central Coast AVA. The Central Coast isn't one of the more well-known Sauvignon Blanc growing regions. Bordeaux, the Loire Valley in France, and New Zealand get more press than the Central Coast, but those locations can't compete when it comes to price. For me, Sauvignon Blanc is a grape that is best when produced with only the winemaking techniques that are absolutely necessary. In Bordeaux, they make Sauvignon Blanc wines (blended with a little Semillon) that can be aged for 25 years. I don't get to drink those wines, but I can get young, bright, fresh Sauv Blanc wines that are Spring-time in a bottle, that is priced very well. And that is what the Monique Cellars Sauvignon Blanc 2018 should be all about, beautiful aromas and crisp, bright citrus and fruit flavors, nothing complicated, but nothing not to like either. Like most Trader Joe's wine, there is no technical information concerning the farming of the grapes or the making of the wine. But after all these years of Central Coast Wine Warehouse producing contract wine for Trader Joe's I know to expect a wine that drinks above its price point. The alcohol content is 13.9%.Monique Cellars Sauvignon Blanc 2018 Tasting NotesThe color is a clean, clear, lemon yellow. The nose is lemon, lime, green apple, orange blossom honey, soft spice, canned peaches, and lightly floral. The nose isn't quite as seductive as Loire Valley Sauv Blanc or as bold as New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. This wine has a nice rounded mouth-feel and a solid mix of flavors. The acidity isn't as bright as some Sauv Blancs which makes the Monique Cellars seem slightly subdued. It tastes of grapefruit, pear, peach, and ripe apple. The mid-palate brings a salty sensation, along with sleek guava, a hint of banana, and a late slap of tangerine. The finish is soft but does stick around for some time. The Summary The Monique Cellars Sauvignon Blanc 2018 is a wine that grows on you. It is not as big and bold a New Zealand Sauv Blanc and at first sip may seem somewhat lessor. But after a few sips, you start to appreciate it for its own virtues. This is a solid, very drinkable Sauv Blanc that has a bit of personality and sells for a penny less than seven dollars. That is nothing to take lightly. Just the White wine for watching Netflix, plus you can grab it at Trader Joe's while getting other needed supplies. In these days of lock-down getting your wine at a grocery store makes your shopping a little easier. Try to make a wine shop run, they need your business in these strange times.

It’s funny/not funny how we give ourselves clues as to what is going on inside with external stuff. A few weeks ago I went to Trader Joe’s and bought those salty mochi snacks that are nearly impossible to stop eating. In addition, I bought granola, yogurt and a bottle of Two Buck Chuck that was three bucks.None of these items necessarily sound bad (unless you’re an oenophile), but none were on my list and none are things that I usually consume. I was shopping for a “feel better”. Unfortunately all of this stuff ultimately makes me feel worse in the end. Not only do I feel shitty after I eat or drink them, I can then beat up on myself because I know better. So when I heard myself asking the stock person where those damned mochi things were, why didn’t I stop then? Why do we have to drag ourselves through the shittiness to try to get to a better feeling? We know the ultimate result.Inevitably, I got to what was underneath. I was feeling anxious and afraid about something that was on the horizon. The headache and feeling bloated from the wine and the mochi snacks didn’t ultimately help.I can see that this stuff doesn’t work any more. Whether it’s food or shopping or anything else that takes me out of center. By now, when I have that thought to pick up the bottle of wine I know it's a flag, a warning, that something is trying to get my attention.I’ve worked with these signals, these triggers, in 12 Step programs for over 25 years. While I have the grace to not be an alcoholic and can stop at one glass, the fact that I “pick up” anything to medicate my feelings whether it’s wine or new shoes, is something I want to observe and have compassion about, rather than feeling more shame.12 Step programs have served me well for more than a quarter century. They’ve provided structure and community that I found no where else. They kept me from going over the edge emotionally and financially many times. They have a very important and essential place in our society especially if one has the gene that creates substance addiction. They save lives. But for me, they never addressed the core wounding. They never touched the truest, most baseline cause of any of my acting out behavior. They never helped me to see that there was nothing wrong with me in the first place.I completely agree that one must be honest about what is going on. But feeling further shamed and punished doesn’t seem to be the quickest way to heal the source of the wound. Love does. And, unfortunately, it’s not something I’ve heard talked about enough in 12 Step. What we’re all trying to do is to feel loved. Deeply loved. Deeply lovable. To get back to the knowing that we are inherently lovable - and always have been. NO MATTER WHAT. Even when we go on the occasional Trader Joe’s spree. Especially when we go on the occasional Trader Joe’s spree. When we know from a place deep inside that we are and always have been lovable, we can safely feel all that we feel. Deeply. One day at a time…

The StoryThe Trader Joe's RSVP Brut is a $6.99 TJ's non-vintage exclusive, sourced from grapes grown in California and produced with the Traditional Method, the same techniques used to make Champagne. CWF reviewed this wine way back in 2010 and then it was a blend of "92% Chardonnay and 8% shhh...it's a secret". Why they felt the need to "shhh" us, I don't know, what could the mystery possibly be? This may or may not be the same blend. The label says this Bubbly was produced by RSVP Vineyards out of Ceres, California. Ceres, Ca. happens to be the headquarters of Bronco Wines, the makers of "2 Buck Chuck" a Trader Joe's staple, so there may be a connection.I went to Trader Joe's looking for an inexpensive Holiday party wine, I recalled them having some decent Cremant Bubbly from Burgundy in past years. Cremant is the French term for a Sparkling wine or Bubbly made in France, but not in Champagne. I checked the Bubbly section and they had a few to choose from, but none of the bottles said Traditional Method on the label. Now, this isn't by law or is scientific, but I have found that when a Sparkling winemaker produced the Bubbly with the Traditional or Champagne Method that put the information on the label front and center. If the Bubbly was made in the Charmat Method or the Prosecco Method they don't mention it.It's just me, but I want my value-priced (cheap) French Bubbly made in the Champagne style and my inexpensive (cheap) Italian Bubbles made in the Prosecco style. So, anyway, this isn't a value-priced French Burgundian Cremant write-up, It is a super cheap California Traditional Method Sparkling wine. Judging from my review from Christmas 2010, I thought it was a very tasty bang-for-the buck Bubbly. The alcohol content is 12%.PS: If you want to know what RSVP stands for check out the upper left corner of the front label, turns out RSVP is French, who knew?Tasting NotesThe color is a pale golden yellow with a flurry of bubbles. The nose is a crisp green apple, lemon, a little brioche, Anjou pear, peach, and lime. This a well-balanced Sparkling wine, the acidity stays in control (often very inexpensive Traditional Method Bubbles can be acid bombs) along with some flavors that caused me to pause to figure out what was happening in my glass. It tastes of slightly sour lemon, a drop or two of lime, crisp apple and melon. The mid-palate adds some Ricola cough drops (mix of herbs and lemon), apple core (seeds and all), stone fruit, and pear. The acidity does not bite and the herbal, apple core flavors take a moment to get used to, but once you adjust it becomes a pleasant surprise for a $6.99 Sparkling wine. The finish is full and long. The Summary * I seemed to have enjoyed the 2010 version of the RSVP Brut more than the 2019 version. The 2010 RSVP seemed to be a typical Chardonnay-based Sparkling wine, just very inexpensive. The 2019 edition has some challenging flavors, not bad flavors, it is just that herbs, minerals, and apple core are not often seen in cheap Bubbles. * This is a very drinkable Bubbly, but may not be the first choice to pour for non-wine people at a Holiday party. Something light and breezy may be a better choice. * It is not a bad Bubbly by any means and is actually quite interesting, it is just that I am not so sure interesting is the best choice for a Holiday party.

Oxte The Silence Red Blend – Trader Joe's

The Oxte The Silence Red Blend 2017- Trader Joe's is a Trader Joe's $5.99 import exclusive, a blend of 40% Tempranillo, 25% Syrah, 25% Garnacha (same as Grenache) and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from vineyards in the Cariñena region of Northeast Spain. Oxte is the Spanish word for "shoo" as in shoo fly, to swat something away. The Oxte is produced by Axial Wines, who also make the TJ's LaGranja 360 wines, which are Spain's version of 2 Buck Chuck and to my taste about 3 times better, here is a link to LaGranja 360 Rosado 2016  and LaGranja 360 Verdejo Viura . I am usually impressed by how Axial Wines can produce a quality wine, with quality packaging for such a low price. They distribute over 500,000 cases (12 bottles to a case or over 6,000,000 bottles) of wine a year), I guess at that volume a little profit on each bottle adds up. Trader Joe's exclusive wines rarely have much in the way of technical information available and the Oxte actually has none, so everything we are going to learn about this Red Blend is going to come from the glass. The alcohol content is 14%. The color is a very dark raspberry jam red with black highlights. The nose does not say $5.99, it's sort of dark and brooding, black cherry, cinnamon, black pepper, at this price I doubt if there is any oak, but I think I am getting some vanilla, also licorice, and blackberry. This is a wine with a nice bit of weight on the palate, smooth and easy to drink. It tastes of blackberry and black cherry, plum, black pepper, and some spice lurking around the edges. The mid-palate adds some sweet licorice, raspberry jam (but not too sweet) and herbs. The tannins don't bite and the acidity has the length to let the flavors unfold, which is a high complete for a $5.99 red wine. The finish is full and stays around for a while. Summary * The Oxte The Silence doesn't look or taste like a sub-6 buck Red wine * This is a balanced, silky smooth Red blend, the flavors meld together  * Use the Oxte as a "ringer" when blind tasting under $20 Spanish reds, you will surprise everyone * Also try the LaGranja 360 wines, I am not crazy about every wine in the line-up, but 3/4 of them seriously rock for $4 to $6
