We're finally easing into summermode this week with our last full interview of the season and this is a great one!  Proxima Parada's Nick Larson and Kevin Middlekauf have been friends since college in San Luis Obispo, CA, and have crafted a musical career together underpinned by the strong support of their fans and local community.  Now, almost ten years into this, they're on their fifth album, Second Brother, released in 2021 and their free-flowing and sun-soaked indie soul vibes feel fresh and organic as ever -- most apropos for a native-California band. While their growing fanbase had been built on hardwork and much love, in late 2022, when a video clip of their music went viral on a popular TikTok channel and earned over 30 million views, these guys were launched well beyond their expectations -- a much welcomed turn of events for any band, let alone for Nick and Kevin who love to tour, meet their fans, and connect with audiences in a live setting. With two new singles currently out, "So Many Ways to Get Downtown," and "Tunnel Through a Mountain," these ambassadors of forward motion are ready to roll through 2023 and beyond!  Come learn more about how Proxima Parada balances success while remaining true to one's self and loyal to their community on this episode of Roadcase.

Welcome to Roadcase!!  We are stoked to have Louis Smith of Kendall Street Company on the show this week. Louis is a Virginia Beach native who started out jamming with his buddies at the University of Virginia and then took it all out on the road, playing 100s of shows a year before the Covid shutdown. The band is now poised for their first California tour beginning June 10, which coincides with the release of their upcoming album, Untitled California Project, on June 24. Louis is a fun-loving dude with a quirky sense of humor reflected in whimsical songwriting and off-the-wall album concepts designed to keep it light and fun but with super-intriguing Prog Rock and Jam Groove elements. Louis has a great vibe and is super enthusiastic about the future -- and rightly so. He's a hard working road dog, and is chomping at the bit to continue to let his authentic self shine through his music, relying on his hard working ethos along with his stunning guitar chops. So hop on the Roadcase bus as we head out to the Golden State and learn more about Louis Smith and Kendall Street Company. This episode of Big Blend Radio’s “Music Monday” Show features singer-songwriter Deborah Crooks from the California band Bay Station. Hear about some of the songs and stories from their new EP “Beyond the Safe & Sound.” Named for the historic train station in Alameda, California, near where its core members live, Bay Station organically came together in 2013 after Deborah Crooks and Kwame Copeland began co-writing after years making music as solo artists. They soon brought in fellow Alamedan Steve Waters on lead guitar and vocals. As they did on their previous three releases, Your Own Reaction (2014 under their former name, KCDC), Go Out and Make Some (2016) and Other Desert Cities (2018), they called on Ben Bernstein and Mike Stevens to round out the rhythm section. Bay Station continues to blend elements of folk, rock, blues and Americana on their fourth recorded collection. Originally planning to head to the east coast to record with Stevens in his Connecticut studio, the band pivoted after the pandemic hit, staying local, and playing weekly porch concerts for their neighbors. Motivated by current events, they began writing new songs and shelving others that no longer seemed relevant to the project.  In mid-summer, they started recording tracks at home, sending digital files to Bernstein and Stevens to complete their parts. Out on all digital platforms, “Beyond the Safe & Sound” reflects on a year like no other.

John Craigie began his career like many artists of the early 2000’s- playing in coffee shops up and down the coast of California with the occasional intrastate appearances in other coffee shops. during this time, Craigie honed his craft as a songwriter but also took the time to develop a real stage experience. looking to artists he admired such as Todd snider and Arlo Guthrie- John Craigie adopted storytelling as a regular interlude in his set (a facet of performance which remains to this day). his performance has been captured in two live record “Capricorn in Retrograde, Just Kidding Live in Portland” and “Opening for Steinbeck”- two albums that we personally recommend to everyone. These stories are a touching combination of funny and insightful and really open up the barrier between the stage and the audience. John Craigie is stunningly approachable in his demeanor- a personal attribute which extends to his musical identity as well. In 2009, he released his first record “Montana Tale” which exhibited his knack for first-person oriented writing with solid rhythmical acoustic backing. Although there are consistent hallmarks of who Craigie is as a musician across his discography- he is fearless in his creativity. His 9 studio albums over the years cover everything from stomp and holler, collaborative commune to his latest 60’s-esque groove experience “Asterisk the Universe”.

The crew is joined by Chief Deputy District Attorney Brendan Farrell as he discusses a momentous win with a lawsuit against the State of California in effort to keep a convicted killer behind bars. In July of 1997, Nathan Ramazini, then 16, and Leopoldo Contreras, then 19, brutally murdered their friend, 16-year-old Erik Ingebretson. Traumatizing the small town of Colusa forever. Ramazzini was believed to be the driving force behind the killing and  was tried as an adult. He was found guilty by a jury and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Contreras accepted a plea bargain from prosecutors and was sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison. Fast Forward to October 2017 where Gov. Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 394 that granted parole hearings to inmates sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for crimes they committed before the age of 18. In an effort to keep a dangerous killer in jail, Chief Deputy District Attorney Brendan Farrell drafted a writ to the Court of Appeals that Senate Bill 394 violated the California Constitution. The writ was filed in June of 2018. Meanwhile, SB 9, authorized a prisoner who was under the age of 18 at the time of committing an offense for which the prisoner was sentenced to life without parole to submit a petition for recall and resentencing, and in October of 2018, Ramazini did just that. The case was brought back to Colusa County Courts and retraumatized a scarred community. Evidence was revisited, and statements reiterated. Four days later, Judge Jeffery Thompson upheld the original sentence of life in prison, without the possibility of parole. However, SB 394 would have allow Ramazzini to be eligible for parole under the new law in July 2021. In October, Farrell finally received the opportunity in the Sacramento County Superior Court where Judge James Arguelies rolled that SB 394 was unlawful. Pioneer Review articles written on this topic (paywall):02/07/2018 - Ramazzini seeks reduced sentence, hearing set for May 1005/09/2018 - Re-sentencing hearing for Ramazzini pushed back06/27/2018 - District Attorney works to keep Ramazzini in jail10/17/2018 - Ramazzini re-sentencing hearing begins Tuesday10/24/2018 - Psychologist's testimony the focus on first day of Ramazzini re-sentencing hearing10/24/2018 - Community shows support for Ingebretsen family ahead of Ramazzini re-sentencing hearing10/25/2018 -Ramazzini's fate in Judge's hand Final arguments and sentencing to be held Friday10/31/2018 - Judge upholds teenage killer's original sentence (Newspaper Version)02/13/2019 - Indivisible group seek clarity on prison reform laws12/11/2019 - DA's effort to keep killer in prison moves forward02/19/2020 - DA's right to sue California Parole Board upheld10/28/2020 - DA's office fights State Legislature in Ramazzini case11/04/2020 - DA prevails in lawsuit against State of California===Music by: Ingrid Witt, "Drama Drama Trauma",

This week on Full Circle Analog we sat down with friend and community leader, George. George grew up in El Monte, and was a quintessential part of the California Music scene from the 60's onward. Having fallen in love with The Beach Boys at a young age, we discuss first bands and Musical Awakening Moments that we experienced watching Rock-N-Roll evolve. George is a Board Member of the Past Pleasures Car Club, a group that celebrates classic cars here in Southern California; and helped organize many concerts here in the Redlands/Yucaipa/Calimesa area. If you love Classic Cars and want to attend one of their events, you can check out their website: http://www.pastpleasurescarclub.com/ for more information on current and past Car Club events. This interview is part one of two, and the next half will be up next week!
