Heute wird in der unteren Hälfte sowohl bei Frauen als auch bei Männern gespielt. Zwei DTB-Profis waren als Erstes auf ihren Courts. Philipp Kohlschreiber und Jan-Lennard Struff. Kohlschreiber ist nach dem Turnier in Indian Wells im Oktober nicht mehr auf einem Court gesehen worden. Die Karriere klingt so langsam aus. Für die Australian Open war er auch nur fürs Hauptfeld gemeldet. Er profitierte dann vom Ausfall einiger Spieler vor ihm in der Weltrangliste und rückte so direkt ins Hauptfeld. Das Match gegen Marco Cecchinato war sein erstes auf australischem Boden 2022. Cecchinato ist alles, nur kein Spieler, der gerne auf Hartplätzen unterwegs ist. Seine Karrierebilanz auf Hartplatz: 33 Matches gewonnen, 75 verloren. Und so lief auch das Match. Kohlschreiber brachte die Bälle ins Spiel und ließß Cecchinato die Fehler machen. So gingen die ersten beiden Sätze an den Wahl-Kitzbüheler mit 6-4 und 7-5. Im dritten Satz wurde es dann knapper. The 25 year old Italian had never won a grand slam match prior to this tournament. The match of the tournament came a day later than expected at Roland Garros.Just 24 hours after the Serena-Sharapova non-event, World No.72 Marco Cecchinato stunned Novak Djokovic in an exhilarating encounter, and one that will be remembered for a pulsating fourth-set tiebreak that transfixed everyone watching.Catherine Whitaker is joined on The Tennis Podcast by The Telegraph’s tennis correspondent Simon Briggs in the immediate aftermath.
