Enlightenment - The central point "Enlightenment" and Buddhism What is the central point in Buddhism? As in all religions, there are countless rules of conduct in Buddhism. Some go back to the historical Buddha, others were written later by monks or scholars. In my view, Buddhism is not a religion, but a philosophy. The central point in the philosophy of Buddha is the striving for "enlightenment", the finding of one's own self under the mostly buried personality. Unlike other world religions, in Buddhism this important, central element (the "enlightenment") is absolutely in the foreground, the rules (also those written by Buddha personally) are only building blocks on the way to awakening. Why did the Indian prince Siddhartha Gautama become so famous; what made his teachings so different from the teachings of the other "founders of religions"? His peacefully meditating statue is in every second household, his paintings sell dazzlingly, but what do people in the West know of him? Little is known, plain and simple. The image of a meditating Buddha puts people in a peaceful mood, Buddhism has been adopted as a kind of "second religion". For those people who have an interest in the worldview of the historical Buddha, it is time to look at the central element from his teachings. - ENLIGHTENMENT - What is it, how does it work, how to deal with it? "Enlightenment" is an "aha moment," the tiny instant when you understand the world, the universe, and yourself. It is not a "bang", not a "fireworks", not a "party". And "enlightenment" just works, it is not an event reserved only for the historical Buddha. Buddha said that in every human being, animal or living being, enlightenment already lies, it only has to be found. And this is one hundred percent true. "Enlightenment" lies within us, we just have to discover it for ourselves. "Enlightenment" we can reach by intensively dealing with the subject, by seeing "enlightenment" as a good friend, by looking at it like our first great love, which we always and gladly think of, frequently and intensively. By freeing ourselves to search for "enlightenment", within us, no person will give it to us, Buddha was a guide, a spiritual tour guide, he said we should not pray to him, but search for "enlightenment". Loving VS. Virginia by Patricia Hruby PowellRichard and Millie had grown up together with their families in Central Point, Virginia. It was an unusual area for that time in Virginia – black and white families would often get together for events and to just hang out. The rest of the segregated South seemed to disappear in Central Point. When Millie was in high school, she and Richard started to date and in time fell in love. But there was a problem. Richard was white, and Millie was black and Native American. In Virginia, people who were white could only marry other people who were white. Millie and Richard went to Washington, D.C. to get married since they knew they couldn't in Virginia. But in the dead of night, the Sheriff arrested them for being together. They were tried and found guilty of breaking the law for living together because they were of different races. Their sentence was they could not return to Virginia for 25 years, or face the possibility of going to jail. Both of them wanted to live in Virginia – it was where their families were and where they wanted to raise their children. Would they never be able to return home? Recommended for students in grades 7 and up. * The word Hell and Bastard are read aloud in this podcast.

One of the ways the federal government directed pandemic relief funding was to provide more food cost reimbursements and issue waivers to schools that enabled them to offer free meals to all students, regardless of income. However, that program was not part of the federal spending bill to fund the government for the upcoming year. While the full impact is not yet known, some parents and teachers are concerned about losing universal free school meals if the June 30 federal waiver is not extended. We're joined by nutrition services directors from two Oregon school districts: Nathan Roedel from the Hillsboro School District, and Anne Leavens with Central Point in Southern Oregon.

Tracy Mancuso lives in Central Point, OR and sells customized wedding & birthday cakes with her cottage food business, Sugar Rush. Initially, Tracy's passion for cake making started as a hobby in 2010, but quickly grew into a business as more and more people requested her creations. In 2013, Tracy joined forces with another home baker, and that's when their business really took off. Initially they used Oregon's law for domestic kitchens to sell their home baked goods legally. With two young children, one of whom is autistic, working from her home was especially important. When her business partner left the business in 2019, Tracy switched to using Oregon's newer (and simpler) cottage food law to run her business from her home. Despite many challenges and changes along the way, Tracy's business has continued to grow, and she says that she can barely keep up! She has thousands of social media followers and shares the strategies she's used to market her cake business, build a good reputation in her local community, and bring a little bit of joy into her customers' lives.Get full show notes and transcript here: https://forrager.com/podcast/49

In our last episode, Steve Rinck traced the state of the Dade Battlefield from the 1836 recovery mission to the site becoming a historic Florida state park 100 years ago this month, September 1921 and then up to the present. In this episode, Jean McNary, a long-time educator about the Seminole Wars, brings us into the park itself in the last 50 years. Above, the annual battle reenactment brings thousands to the park each January. Below, the famous statue of "Major Dade" as represented in statuary form by a Union private from the Civil War. Below, the view of the visitor center from the reconstructed breastworks.  Teacher Jean McNary wrote about the Dade Battle for graduate school in 1969. After moving to Florida to teach, she married. She and her husband, a state park ranger, lived at the park in the late 1970s.  In the classroom and at the park, students learn about the Dade Battle and the Seminole Wars. Children come to Dade park for recreational activities as part of the Dade Pioneers group.  Park Manager Bill Gruber demonstrates an era firearm to visitors.  Jean has remained a key supporter for the Dade Battlefield Society, serving multiple terms as its president in the 2000s. Retired now, Jean remains involved in the annual Dade Battlefield Reenactment each January and with park events throughout the year. Jean McNary (with hat) walks with fellow marchers (including Frank Laumer as a foot soldier) from Tampa to the Dade Battlefield in 1988. Thoughts on the phonebook and the impact of google search on local businesses. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tKjxfQHJlo Transcription Phonebooks, yellow pages and your business. Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live. I have a really interesting story that goes along with my business story and the phone book. When I was younger, telephone books for how you found people, okay, they were how you found people that you knew through the white pages of the phonebook. For those of you who aren't familiar with telephone directories, the pages that are white, we would normally refer to those as the white pages, because those were the ones where you had most residential, people being able to be found. So if you knew somebody's last name, you could find them in the white pages in most cases, okay. Then the yellow pages were the pages where all the businesses were, and specifically businesses that paved this phone book a little more to be highlighted on the yellow pages. And so you have larger ads there and everything else and those are separated by subject. Now, this is for people that aren't familiar with phone books. In the old days, you get a handful. Actually, when I was just starting out in business, there were three or four phonebook companies, and they were very thick, large manuals, and you would get from and even in a small area, you would get really large books delivered for free. Because so much advertising went into it and so much money, it was a very lucrative thing. And it was something that entire businesses thrived off of paying for one advertising source, and that was the phonebook. So this is a phone book. This is the latest one from the yellow book company, one of the only phonebook companies that I see out there anymore. And these guys, this one's for Medford and Grants Pass here in Southern Oregon, also includes Ashland, Central Point, Rogue River and White City. And I remember when I first started out that they're not as thick as they used to be, they're a lot thinner, there are not as many advertisements very few people are willing to pay for the advertising in back in the day. It actually cost quite a bit to get into the phonebook because you're paying once and this is going to sit on somebody's counter or somewhere where they can reach it, it's going to sit there for a very long time. Oftentimes way past the date in which, as widgets labeled that this is labeled for 2021, and 2022. So we'll see how long these exist, I would predict that you're still going to see phonebooks into the future, they're just going to have a different flavor and they're going to go in a slightly different direction. Because nowadays, as we all know, if you search into Google, it's easier, quicker, faster than going into a phonebook. Google has been able to kind of develop its own phonebook algorithm as long as you're typing in something that can be seen in a phonebook. Oftentimes, a local section in Google is going to pop up with all the people that fit that category, based on where you're searching for. But also, if you put the name of the town, you're going to see that real quick. Now, when I first started getting involved in business, this started becoming a thing and phonebook started losing power. And one of my first clients was telling me that they got all their business via the phonebook for years and years and years, 20 plus years, they had been getting all their business via a phonebook ad. And now they're at a point where they're getting less and less. They know they weren't paying enough attention to online work. So a lot of my early work was helping typical business brick and mortar businesses get over on to the online space. What I ended up learning is, the phone book was still useful, and it might be in your market. Also, there are a few things you want to look for. Are you playing toward an audience that would pick up a phone book and ...

Elise shares her amazing journey in dog training, which started when she was only 13-years-old and training guide dogs for the blind with the permission of her parents, who didn't want to commit to a full-time pet at the time. Isabel and Elise break down a specific dog training technique - the use of spray bottles as behavior deterrents. Isabel shares the "technique" as it was explained to her by a dog trainer she worked with almost 15 years ago. Both Isabel and Elise have significant concerns about the technique and hope that speaking about it at length on episode 28 will encourage pet parents to consider more positive and effective approaches. After Covid-19 caused her to lose her job, Elise took lemons and made herself a hard iced tea cocktail, so to speak, by starting Rogue Valley Dog Training in Central Point, Oregon. She is currently taking virtual and one-on-one clients as well as leading group training and socialization classes. Elise is truly a joy to interview and an inspiration to us all. EP 55 Sebastiaan Hooft | What's On Your Mind? (Dutch/Nederlands) Hi ik ben Peter en elke week geef ik jullie een podcast over personal development, mindset & verkoop. What's On Your Mind ? is een 1 uur conversatie. A Cheese Monger is the manager of the retail cheese department and they are responsible for managing the cheese inventory, selecting the cheese menu, purchasing, receiving, storing, and development of the cheese ripening. Tom has been officially recognized as the top Cheese Monger in the United States. Tom and I have been friends for nearly 10 years now and I rely on him for cheese recommendations frequently. My catering company, Scratch Catering, serves Rogue Creamery cheese selections exclusively. Rogue Valley AVA History The Rogue Valley AVA wine history dates back to the 1840's. European immigrants planted grapes and eventually bottled wines.  In 1852, an early settler, Peter Britt, began growing grapes and in 1873 founded Valley View Winery, Oregon's first official winery. A professor from Oregon State University planted an experimental test vineyard in the Rogue Valley AVA in 1968 and discovered this region was a great place to grow grapes and in 1972 the Wisnovsky family renewed the Vally View Winery namesake for their winery label. There are four main growing areas in the Rogue Valley AVA, Bear Creek Valley, Illinois Valley, the Valley of the Rogue, and the Applegate Valley which in itself is its own AVA. Overall there are 16 federally approved AVA's or viticulture growing areas in Oregon. The Rogue Valley AVA covers 1.15 million acres of intermountain valley area in Southern Oregon. The Rogue Valley AVA Grape Varietals Del Rio Vineyards from the Rogue Valley AVA Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay are the major grape varietals that are predominant.  There are three valleys that have progressively warmer microclimates providing the Rogue Valley the diversity for growing both warm and cool climate grape varietals.  Pinot Noir is grown to the west as this microclimate is influenced by mountain and ocean winds that cool the area and to the east, the warm weather varieties thrive.  Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc grow in the hills at elevations of nearly 2,000 feet producing grapes with concentrated fruit and sugar. History of Rogue Creamery The Rogue Creamery history spans nearly eight decades. Italian immigrant Tom Vella who had settled in the Sonoma, California area set his sights on the Rogue Valley as an area of opportunity to found a creamery. When Tom arrived it was small farms and pear orchards and the main industry was lumber. Tom was a visionary and entrepreneur opening the small creamery during the Depression, a gutsy move considering the lack of economic climate in the United States. Tom’s goal was to grow the creamery as fast as possible in order to provide employment and sustain the area's small farms.  The farmers supported Tom in his endeavor. The Southern Pacific Rail line that ran from Los Angeles, California to Seattle, Washington passed through Medford which is the larger city located right next to Central Point.  Passengers traveling between San Francisco, California and Seattle stopped to enjoy theatrical performances at the historic Holly Theatre. Rogue Creamery Cheese Selections The Rogue Creamery flourished during the Depression and provided significant amounts of Cheddar cheese for the troops that fought in World War II.  After the war, the Rogue Creamery changed focus and was retooled to serve civilian markets. Cottage cheese was very successfully introduced to the consumer market and served as the transition for the Rogue Creamery to become the premier producer of Blue Cheese that it is today. Inspired by the success of the Cottage cheese Tom Vella knew he needed to grow his product base and Blue Cheese was on Tom’s radar. As the wise entrepreneur that he was, he decided to go right to the source of the best Blue Cheese in the world, Roquefort, France. It was there that Tom and his wife spent the summer of 1955. Tom’s good fortune, talent, and fluency in Italian opened many doors. The Roquefort Association, although shrouded in secrecy, welcomed Tom when he spoke to the supervisor of the facilities in the man’s native dialect. Presented with a gold pass signed by all functionaries of the Society, Tom toured operations from farms to cheese factories to the curing limestone caves at Cambalou. At summer's end, Tom departed France with plans for a Roquefort type cheese factory, already producing Oregon Blue in his imagination.  Construction began in Central Point in 1956. Tom envisioned caves similar to the environment of Cambalou and designed a building to duplicate that atmosphere.  Two Quonset-shaped half circled rooms of cement were poured, one over the other, with space in between for insulation. The result was a true cave-like atmosphere. Rogue Creamery Retail Store Production of blue began in early 1955, instant success validated Vella’s business acumen.  This was the first blue cheese produced in caves west of the Missouri River. Over the years Vella’s dedication to quality was unwavering to the end as was his enthusiasm for the business and the Rogue Valley.  He died on December 23, 1998, at age 100. The Rogue Creamery was inherited by Tom’s family and his son Ignazio who became the driving force behind the creamery.  Ignazio's reputation as “The Godfather of the artisan cheese industry” really says it all.  Ig, as he was known, stayed on as a mentor to current owners David Gremmels and Cary Bryant who are now the senior cheese makers. Ig, Cary, and David Today, the Rogue Creamery is thriving. Gremmels and Bryant have steadfastly held to the principles laid out by Tom and Ig Vella. The creamery’s Mission Statement; An artisan cheese company, with people dedicated to service, sustainability and the art and tradition of making the world's finest handmade cheese. Rogue-River-Blue Cheese-with-certificates In the first two years under the leadership of Gremmels and Bryant, the Creamery had won numerous trophies and awards, including World’s Best Blue Cheese at the 2003 World Cheese Awards in London, a first for a U.S. creamery. The Rogue Creamery produces some of the finest blue and cheddar cheese selections in the world. They are Certified Organic and are quickly headed to also being Certified Biodynamic. Here are a few cheese pairing tips from Cheese Monger Tom Van Voorhees. Cheese Pairing Tips Pairing Tips; Pair regional foods, wine, and beer together. Pair light colored wines and beers with fresh cheeses. Wines higher in tannin exaggerate flavors in cheese ie. fat, sharpness, sweetness and animal flavors.  Dessert wines pair nicely with cheeses that have a salty, sharp or bitter flavor. Rogue Creamery Smokey Blue Cheese BLUE CHEESE; Generally pairs well with full-bodied red wines, or sweeter whites such as Gewürztraminer or late harvest dessert wine and Port is classic wine and cheese pairing. CHEDDAR; Generally pairs well with medium to dry white and red wines, especially the sharp and extra-sharp cheddars. Flavored cheddars, usually at the mild or medium level, will expand the selections in both categories of wine.  Don’t forget the beers – cheddars are classic companions to a variety of ales, stouts, and lagers. CURDS; Very light in traditional cheese characteristics; the flavoring agents become prevalent in the flavored varieties.  Curds pair well with most beers, and with lighter white and red wines. It has been great having Tom Van Voorhees join me in The Tasting Room today and even better sampling the world-class cheese selections from the Rogue Creamery! From my table to yours,

Adam got to check out director Jeff Nichols' hard-hitting drama about relationships and racial tensions. Interracial couple Richard and Mildred Loving fell in love and were married in 1958. They grew up in Central Point, a small town in Virginia that was more integrated than surrounding areas in the American South. Yet it was the state of Virginia, where they were making their home and starting a family, that first jailed and then banished them. Richard and Mildred relocated with their children to the inner city of Washington, D.C., but the family ultimately tries to find a way back to Virginia.
