TIMESTAMPS Madalina Cojocari (7:35) Every 40 seconds, a child goes missing or is abducted in the United States. Approximately 840,000 people are reported missing each year and the F.B.I. estimates that between 85 and 90 percent of these are children. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the separate cases of Madalina Cojocari and Charlotte Sena. Madalina Cojocari was 11 years old when she was last seen getting off the school bus in North Carolina on November 21, 2022. Madalina did not attend school after that date. By mid December, school officials were concerned and asked to meet with Madalina and her parents. Madalina's mother Diana showed up to the school on December 15 and confessed that she did not know where her daughter was. The FBI became involved quickly. Madalina's case is strange and confusing. Both her mother and step-father have been arrested and charged with failing to report the disappearance of a child. As of October 2023, Madalina remains missing. Charlotte Sena (9) was camping with her family in a state park in New York on September 30, 2023. She told her cousins that she was going for a quick bike ride before returning to their campsite. Her family became alarmed very quickly when she did not return, and they found her bike abandoned nearby. A few days later, on October 2, a man named Craig Ross Jr delivered a ransom note to the Sena home. It is believed he forced Charlotte to write the note, and in it, he demanded $50,000 for her safe return. Police moved quickly and tracked him down hours later. Charlotte was found alive, hidden in a cupboard in his grimy trailer. Read our blogs for these cases: Madalina Cojocari & Charlotte Sena We are now on Patreon! Thank you for your support. In a riveting turn of events, New York law enforcement officials have finally identified and apprehended the man behind the harrowing kidnapping of 9-year-old Charlotte Sena from Moreau Lake State Park. The young girl, who had been missing since Saturday, Sept. 30, was found "safe and in good health" on the evening of Oct. 2. The key to cracking the case was a single fingerprint on a ransom note. Charlotte was enjoying a day at the campsite, joyfully riding her bike when she disappeared. New York State Police, along with multiple other agencies, swiftly launched an extensive search. Given the grave nature of the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, the AWARE Foundation took to Twitter stating that Charlotte was "taken under circumstances that lead police to believe that they are in imminent danger of serious harm and/or death." This prompted State Police to issue an urgent Amber Alert in a desperate bid to locate the young girl. As the search continued, a significant lead emerged on Monday, Oct. 2. At 4:20 a.m., a car approached the Sena family home, which was under the watchful eyes of the New York State Police, given the gravity of the situation. With Charlotte's parents already at the campsite, heavily invested in the search for their beloved daughter, the mysterious car drove up to the family mailbox. A man was seen depositing something before making a hasty exit. Upon inspection, State Police found what turned out to be a ransom note. What could have been a dead end took a pivotal turn when investigators unearthed a crucial piece of evidence: a fingerprint on the ransom note. While initial searches didn't provide a match, persistence led them to input the fingerprint into a comprehensive New York State database. Success came when the fingerprint was identified as that of 46-year-old Craig Ross. Ross had a previous run-in with the law due to a DWI in Saratoga back in 1999. With a viable lead in hand, officials soon located Ross's residence. There, they encountered his mother. Following information gleaned on-site, attention was turned to a camper located behind the main house, where Ross was believed to be staying. Using a tactical approach known as a dynamic entry, officials stormed the mobile home. In a heart-stopping discovery, they found young Charlotte hidden in a cabinet. Simultaneously, Ross was taken into custody without incident. Ross was later presented at Milton Town Court. As of now, he faces serious charges, being held at Saratoga County Correctional Facility without bail. The primary charge is first-degree kidnapping. However, New York State Police have indicated that further charges are likely to follow. The culmination of this nerve-wracking episode was aptly summarized by Gov. Kathy Hochul, who labeled Charlotte's rescue as "a very good day." Her statement resonates with the collective relief of the community and serves as a testament to the relentless efforts of the law enforcement agencies involved. The case of Charlotte Sena stands as a stark reminder of the ever-present dangers lurking, even in seemingly safe environments. It also underscores the paramount importance of vigilance, community awareness, and the unmatched dedication of law enforcement agencies in ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities. In the wake of this incident, families everywhere are reminded to always stay vigilant, maintain open lines of communication with their children about safety, and to always trust their instincts. The collaboration between multiple agencies and the community in this case reaffirms the fact that when we work together, we can overcome even the gravest of threats and ensure the safety of our loved ones. It took 15 rounds of voting to name Kevin McCarthy the Speaker of The House, and it only took one to out him as the speaker. Learn more about it in national news. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Wednesday, a neighbor who witnessed 9-year-old Charlotte Sena being rescued in upstate New York is describing the scene as right out of a movie. A federal judge in New York has dismissed a lawsuit that accused McDonald's and Wendy's of misleading consumers with ads that show bigger, juicier burgers than their restaurants actually serve. Kevin McCarthy ousted as House speaker after historic vote; Kidnapping suspect in custody after 9-year-old Charlotte Sena was found alive; Trump says he will testify in $250 million civil fraud lawsuit against him; and more on tonight's broadcast.
In an electrifying revelation that brings to light the tireless efforts of the New York State Police and the resilience of a family, 9-year-old Charlotte Sena was found safe and sound after a harrowing 48-hour search. The young girl vanished from Moreau Lake State Park in Gansevoort, N.Y., an event that prompted an all-out manhunt and an outpouring of community support. Late on Monday, a statement from the New York State Police affirmed: “Charlotte Sena has been located and in good health." Governor Kathy Hochul, evidently relieved, expressed her gratitude to the authorities for their relentless search and to the larger community for their unwavering support, stating, "Extremely grateful to @nyspolice, @NYStateParks police, and all of our partners who worked tirelessly to locate Charlotte." The recovery was no less than a feat of detective work. After the child's parents received a ransom note at their residence, it became clear that this was no ordinary missing child case. The note bore fingerprints that, fortuitously, were already in a law enforcement database. As Gov. Hochul explained, these prints were linked to a prior DWI case from 1999 in Saratoga, leading investigators on a trail that culminated at the home of Craig Nelson Ross Jr., a 47-year-old resident of the area. What ensued was akin to scenes from a thriller. By 6:32 p.m. ET on Monday, law enforcement surrounded the suspect's camper, where Charlotte was finally discovered, concealed inside a cabinet. In a poignant recount, Gov. Hochul noted, “She knew that she was being rescued. She knew that she was in safe hands.” Craig Nelson Ross Jr. is now in custody, charged with first-degree kidnapping, and investigators are probing deeper into the case. It's noteworthy that Ross Jr. lived merely two miles away from the Sena family, although it remains uncertain if he had been surveilling Charlotte or if the kidnapping was an act of random predation. The initial days following Charlotte's disappearance were tense. After she went missing during her solo bike ride, her family and other campers frantically searched the vicinity, joined soon after by the state police. As Gov. Hochul recounted, “[Charlotte] did a couple of loops with close friends she considers her cousins and then she decided... to go around one more time by herself." But within a brief span, Charlotte vanished. Her abandoned bike was later found, but details about its discoverer remain unclear. In the wake of this traumatic event, the Sena family has been thrust into the spotlight. While they've solicited privacy during this trying period, they did convey their heartfelt gratitude. A statement by Charlotte's family eloquently encapsulated their emotions, "A huge thank you to the FBI, the New York State police... and hundreds of volunteers who supported us and worked tirelessly to bring Charlotte home." Gov. Hochul, reflecting on the dramatic rescue, encapsulated the sentiments of many: “Often these stories don't end up like this.” She then extended her gratitude to both local and federal law enforcement, emphasizing the significance of every passing moment in such cases. Support has poured in from all quarters, including a GoFundMe page set up by Charlotte's aunt to aid the Sena family in navigating the unforeseen challenges that lie ahead. The campaign's description reads poignantly, "... Any donations will go directly to her parents to help with any expenses while they transition back into some sense of normalcy." As the story unfolds, it stands as a testament to the power of community, the efficacy of our law enforcement agencies, and the indomitable spirit of a family determined to find their child. Craig Nelson Ross Jr., now held without bail in Saratoga County Jail, awaits the next legal steps in this intense saga. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? 9-year-old Charlotte Sena has been found, alive. The break in the case came early yesterday morning when a car stopped at the mailbox at the Sena family home, leaving what was discovered to be a ransom note. Prints taken from the note were matched to Craig N. Ross, 46 who had been arrested in a 1999 DUI case. Ross is now charged with first degree kidnapping. Police found the 4th grader in a cupboard in Ross's camper parked behind his mother's home. What a difference the weekend makes. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Monday, New York City is drying out after being soaked by one of its wettest days in decades. City dwellers tried to dry out basements, while traffic resumed on highways, subways and airports that were temporarily shuttered by Friday's severe rainfall. Police were searching for a missing 9-year-old girl who had been camping with her family in upstate New York. Charlotte Sena was last seen on Saturday evening in Moreau Lake State Park, about 35 miles north of Albany. And in a remote, dry patch of California farm country, a battle is raging over carrots. Or rather, over the groundwater where they're growing northwest of Los Angeles.
Charlotte Sena, 9, disappears during a family camping trip at Moreau Lake State Park. The camping facility in upstate New York is now closed to the public as authorities continue their search. The 4th grader was riding her bicycle a last trip for the day around the access of Loop A campsites. When she had been gone longer than expected, her parents began searching then called police. Dozens of agents swarmed the park with dogs, drones, boats, and a helicopter. Sena has been missing for three days. Anyone with information is asked to call 518-457-6811 or send an email to crimetip@troopers.ny.gov. Gavin Newsom has named Democratic strategist and Kamala Harris 2020 presidential campaign adviser Laphonza Butler to fill the U.S. Senate seat made vacant by Sen. Dianne Feinstein's death. Newsom is fulfilling his pledge to appoint a Black woman if Feinstein's seat became open. The long-serving Democratic senator died Thursday after a series of illnesses. Butler leads Emily's List, a political organization that supports women who favor abortion rights. Butler lives in Maryland but owns a home in California and is expected to reregister to vote there. Newsom had faced pressure from some Black politicians and advocacy groups to select Barbara Lee, a prominent Black congresswoman who's already running for the seat. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court justices are taking the bench for the first time since late June. Their new term begins Monday with ethics concerns swirling around the court. The only case being argued Monday concerns the meaning of the word “and” in a federal law dealing with prison terms for low-level drug dealers. The length of thousands of sentences a year is at stake. The court also is expected to get rid of hundreds of appeals that accumulated over the summer. The term is shaping up as an important one for social media as the court grapples with applying older laws and rulings to the digital age. WASHINGTON (AP) — New polling finds America's college campuses are seen as far friendlier to liberals than to conservatives when it comes to free speech. Polling from the University of Chicago and the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds 47% of adult Americans say liberals are free to express their views on college campuses, while 20% say the same of conservatives. Free speech debates have roiled campuses in recent years, with conflicts arising over conservative guest speakers. Republican lawmakers in dozens of states have proposed bills limiting public colleges from teaching topics considered divisive. The poll finds 30% of Americans say states should be allowed to restrict what state universities teach. MOREAU, N.Y. (AP) — Police were searching for a missing 9-year-old girl who had been camping with her family in upstate New York. Charlotte Sena was last seen on Saturday evening in Moreau Lake State Park, about 35 miles north of Albany. Gov. Kathy Hochul told reporters that the girl had been riding her bike around a loop in the bucolic park around dinnertime with other children when she decided to ride one last loop by herself. Her parents became alarmed when the fourth grader failed to come back after 15 minutes. Police said it was possible she was abducted. The more than 100 searchers Sunday included police, forest rangers and civilians. VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis will open this week a global gathering of Catholic bishops and laypeople to discuss the future of the church. It's a meeting where women, their voices and their votes, will take center stage for the first time. Francis earlier this year agreed to let women and laypeople vote alongside bishops at the synod, putting the laity and hierarchy on equal ground. Supporters say that as a result of this, the gathering, which starts on Wednesday, is a watershed moment for the Catholic Church and quite possibly the most consequential thing Francis will have undertaken as pope. The meeting runs through Oct. 29, and will be followed by a second session next year. ATLANTA (AP) — Jimmy Carter put off his usual Sunday practice of watching church services online to instead celebrate his 99th birthday with his wife, Rosalynn, and their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Plains. The gathering will take place in the same one-story structure where the Carters lived before he was first elected as a state senator in 1962. Carter's family views it as a way to honor his personal legacy. But tributes have come from around the world, with celebrities and political figures wearing “Jimmy Carter 99” caps as they offer video messages to the former president. The Jimmy Carter Library & Museum and The Carter Center hosted a full weekend of festivities, including a naturalization ceremony Sunday for 99 new U.S. citizens on Sunday. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The unsolved killing of rapper Tupac Shakur has taken a major turn. Duane “Keffe D” Davis was arrested Friday morning and indicted on a murder charge. The case returned to the spotlight in July when Nevada authorities served a search warrant this week in connection with the rap star's shooting death. The renewed activity comes nearly 30 years after Shakur was gunned down on Sept. 7, 1996. Shakur, one of the most prolific figures in hip-hop, releasing hit records while he was alive as well as posthumously. Friday's arrest reopens, again, one of the most infamous killings in hip-hop history. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ahead of Dustin Lynch's sixth studio album, “Killed the Cowboy,” the 38-year-old country star sensed some inner conflict. He had achieved many of his goals; he spent the last decade securing country radio hits and ranking in a cumulative billions of streams. The question became, what next? Should he settle down and, figuratively kill his interior cowboy? “Where do I want to be in five, 10, 20, 30 years?” he told AP. That question isn't exactly answered on the record, but no vulnerability is left unexplored across it: from the sole collaboration with Jelly Roll, “Chevrolet,” a reimagination of Dobie Gray's 1973 hit “Drift Away” to playful tracks like “Honky Tonk Heartbreaker” and “George Strait Jr.” LAS VEGAS (AP) — Two helicopters zoomed through the starlit skies before producing spotlights over a Las Vegas desert and U2 frontman Bono, who kneeled to ground while singing “Vertigo.” This scene may seem customary, but the visuals were created by floor-to-ceiling graphics inside the immersive Sphere. It was one of the several impressive moments during U2's “UV Achtung Baby” first residency show at the high-tech, globe-shaped venue, which opened Friday night. The legendary rock band performed for two hours inside the massive,state-of-the-art spherical venue. Throughout the night, U2 took 18,000 attendees on a musical journey accompanied by a plethora of attractive visuals. NEW YORK (AP) — After several quiet weeks in movie theaters, four films entered wide release over the weekend. “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie” came out the top dog, with $23 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday. The performances of all four films – “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” “Saw X,” “The Creator” and “Dumb Money” – told a familiar story at the box office. What worked? Horror and animated franchises. What didn't? Originality and comedy. “Saw X" managed to bounce back from a franchise low with an opening weekend of $18 million. “The Creator,” made for $80 million, debuted with a modest $14 million. The GameStop stock comedy “Dumb Money” disappointed with $3.5 million in nationwide expansion. VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis has presided over a ceremony to create 21 new cardinals. They include key figures at the Vatican and in the field who will help enact his reforms and cement his legacy. With the ceremony Francis has further expanded his influence on the College of Cardinals who will one day elect his successor. Nearly three-quarters of the voting-age “princes of the church” owe their red hats to the Argentine Jesuit. Among the new cardinals is the controversial new head of the Vatican's doctrine office, Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez. Leaders of the church in geopolitical hotspots like Hong Kong, Jerusalem and South Sudan filled out the roster. Francis said their variety and geographic diversity would serve the church like musicians in an orchestra. Footage from deep in the Pacific Ocean has given the first detailed look at three World War II aircraft carriers that sank in the pivotal Battle of Midway. The video could help solve mysteries about the days-long barrage in 1942 that marked a shift in control of the Pacific theater from Japanese to U.S. forces. Remote submersibles operating 3 miles below the surface conducted extensive archeological surveys in September of the U.S.S. Yorktown, as well as the Akagi and Kaga, two of the four Japanese aircraft carriers destroyed. The imagery is expected to provide insight into conflicting reports about what happened in the battle. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises.
