This week on The Bliss Project Podcast, we are thrilled to share with you Episode 39: Allowing Music To Be a Guiding Force with Grammy Nominated Composer and Artist Cheryl B. Engelhardt. Cheryl is a GRAMMY®-Nominated New Age Composer and Recording Artist. She has been a musician for as long as she can remember. But it wasn't always New Age (or was it???) - she's made music for commercials, trailers, films, meditation apps, and social justice choirs plus her own four pop records, all before landing inside New Age. The reason she writes music - usually while she is having some sort of experience like traveling cross country on a train or stuck in a half-abandoned mountain town in Greece - is to ground, center, relax, and empower listeners so they can have their own experience. Cheryl is also a trauma-informed master coach and uses that skill set to mentor other independent musicians as well, in her mastermind AMPLIFY. In this episode we discuss: Cheryl's background in music and what led her to where she is today. How music has been a guiding force in her life. How her passion and career in music have evolved over the years. What inspired her journey to become a trauma-informed master coach and how this work has played into her music career. How her own personal and spiritual journey led her into making her first New Age Album. How a train trip across the country to heal her grief birthed her Grammy-nominated Album The Passenger. The amazing moment she found out she was nominated for a Grammy. Her vision and knowing that she would one day be nominated. Her own daily practices and commitment to her own spiritual journey. Cheryl B. Engelhardt is a composer and songwriter whose new age, ambient music has been featured in films, ads, tv shows, and on meditation apps like Insight Timer. Cheryl began music lessons as a toddler; since then, her career has taken her all over the world but it's always been unique places and experiences that inspire her most creative work – experiences like a nine-day, cross country train trip from New York to Los Angeles and back, during which she composed and recorded her new album, The Passenger. With nothing but a laptop and a USB keyboard, Cheryl created twelve tracks while passing incredible views and roving wildlife. In this episode, Cheryl shares the highs and lows of that journey, which served as a creative experiment and an opportunity to process grief following the recent loss of a dear friend. Plus, Esme and Cheryl discuss the magic of train travel, how being physically in motion gives us the momentum to get emotionally and creatively unstuck, and the importance of relinquishing control in travel and in life. Ashley and I have been doing quite a few workshops centered around what psychological strength is and what the components are that make it up. And, there's one component that consistently generates more confusion and questions than any other. That topic is mindfulness. The skill of mindfulness sits at the center of our wheel of psychological strength, and it's the core of psych strength for a reason. You need strong mindfulness skills to develop skills in all of the other areas. Your relationship with your thoughts relies on mindfulness. Mindfulness is the foundation of emotional intelligence. It impacts your relationships, your sense of self, it interacts with your habits and behavior and is an important component in life design. It really is the core of psych strength. However, it frequently gets confused with other similar skills and techniques. Specifically, visualization. In today's episode, I want to dig into these two concepts: Mindfulness and visualization to give you a solid understanding of what each of them is. How they're similar, how they're different, and more importantly, when to use each one of them because they're both useful for different things. Actor, singer, writer, and civil rights activist Donzaleigh Abernathy is goddaughter of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and daughter of the Reverend Dr. Ralph David Abernathy, King's best friend and partner in the civil rights movement — who co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and became president of it after King's assassination on April 4, 1968. Her mother was civil rights activist Juanita Abernathy. As a child, Abernathy witnessed some of the most inspiring and formative moments of the civil rights movement — and some of the most sobering. She also grew up knowing and loving the man she called Uncle Martin, whose stances against racism, poverty, and war remain as relevant today as they were when he first voiced them. Also relevant are his calls for creative maladjustment, meaning the refusal to adjust to society's many ills. Abernathy is the author of Partners to History: Martin Luther King, Ralph David Abernathy and the Civil Rights Movement. She also contributed to the Smithsonian Institute’s In the Spirit of Martin. As an actor, she's known for her many roles in films — such as the civil war drama Gods and Generals — and many series, including the Lifetime drama Any Day Now and zombie-apocalypse series The Walking Dead. In addition, she is the lead soloist in a new choral piece, The Listening, composed by Cheryl B. Engelhardt for the Voices 21C Choir in New York City. It’s inspired by an anti-war speech King delivered exactly one year before his death, and it’s been released as a single and a video.
Every day, our minds are taking in thousands of sights and sounds that can either bring us stress or calm….sometimes without us even knowing it! But what if we could intentionally use tools like sound and music to bring relaxation, presence and calm into our lives? In this episode, I’m chatting with the fascinating Cheryl B. Engelhardt, a New York-based composer who creates beautiful music designed to boost our brain state and promote healing in our lives. After battling panic attacks and transforming her own anxiety using tools like meditation and a gratitude practice, Cheryl combined her science and music backgrounds to compose arrangements that help us process our emotions, get into the flow state and find more balance in our lives. Cheryl uses her awareness of biological factors like resting heart rate and different types of brain waves along with her own success with affirmations and mindfulness to create intricately designed tracks that affect the listener at the emotional level. Listen to discover: Cheryl's amazing story of overcoming anxiety and pouring what she learned into her musical career How music can help you get in the flow and reduce distraction The science behind how music affects your brain state, mood and more The connection between music and emotions I love the way Cheryl has crafted each song on her new album “Luminary” to focus on releasing or attracting different things like confidence, abundance and love. And I’m telling you...this music puts you in such a focused and present state that you can feel right away! Music, like energy, is frequency and vibration, so it only makes sense that music has the power to impact us at a deep level. What a gift to have a tool that all of us can access and that allows us to balance our brains and heal anxiety just by listening! "Two months into starting a daily meditation practice, I had my last panic attack." - Cheryl B. Engelhardt "Gratitude flips that and gratitude starts to have you say ‘What’s good here?’" - Michelle Chalfant "The music is matching the energy of the emotion and then it's pulling you up." - Michelle Chalfant Resources “Luminary” Album https://www.iamaluminary.com/ Cheryl B. It's a tough business we work in. Often times we're working from paycheck to paycheck, and some items such as health insurance can be considered a luxury to those that work in the trenches, trying to make a living in the music industry. Then there's Music Health Alliance. Founded in 2013 with the goal of helping find affordable (and in some cases, next to nothing in cost) health / medical insurance for anyone who works within the music business. Shelia Shipley Biddy who is the COO and Senior Advisor for MHA discusses what options are available for anyone who works in the music biz, and is seeking to find the medical insurance coverage that they can actually afford. With over 4 decades of diverse music industry experience and a continued passion for the well being of music and its makers, Shelia Shipley Biddy is the perfect advocate for the music industry. During her tenure with MCA, the label was named Country Label of the Year seven times by Billboard Magazine, three times by R&R Magazine, and the promotion department garnered over 137 # 1 singles under her leadership. Shelia went on to become senior vice president and general manager of Decca Records, another first for a woman in Nashville. Decca's roster included Mark Chesnutt, Lee Ann Womack, Gary Allan, Rhett Akins, Chris Knight, and others. Shelia has continued to leave a positive mark on music as an artist manager and partner with Hallmark Direction Company and as President of Flying Island Entertainment. On April 15th this year a panel of experts published a position paper online in the Lancet Psychiatry, where they outlined a proposed government response to curb the long-term "profound" and "pervasive" impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health. Undoubtedly, the global lockdown caused a lot of anxiety in some individuals, depression in others, it is fair to assume some medical professionals will suffer from PTSD after the worst is over. The positive news is, that by today we have many validated digital tools and programs to help patients deal with mental health problems remotely. In this episode, Christopher Molaro, talks about why is access to mental health care still problematic, how can digital tools support providers and patients, and what trends are already visible because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Chris is co-founder of NeuroFlow - a health care technology company whose goal is to bridge the gap between mental and physical health in all care settings. Chris first started thinking about the need for better mental health support and care coordination when he was still working for the US army. Upon return from his mission in Iraq, he started noticing how veterans and civilians alike face too many barriers when it comes to receiving appropriate, timely care. One of the things that CDC, WHO and other authorities advise us of doing in case of stress, anxiety, fear, sadness and loneliness in this unprecedented times, is to get plenty of sleep, avoid alcohol and drugs, try to eat healthily, keep in contact with your friends, colleagues, and family, and try to destress with deep breaths and meditation. Read WHO recommendations for mental health issues management, as well as the CDC guidelines to ease difficulties occurring during this pandemic. Cheryl B. Engelhardt is such a source of inspiration for me because her thriving career has featured composing, songwriting, coaching, speaking engagements, producing, and so much more. She is a force of awesomeness and there are a dozen things we could have talked about, but I had to keep my cool and focus on one thing at a time as best as I could. So we talked about one of the coolest things I think she’s ever done: release her latest record, Luminary. Cheryl didn’t just stop with releasing the album, however. When she announced it and started her pre-save campaign, she launched with an immediate, trackable goal: to get on the Billboard charts in the New Age category. Cheryl worked on this goal through the most amazing grassroots efforts: engaging her fanbase, giving them action steps, and reaching out to collaborators to get the word out about her music. She shares all about this process in our conversation, and I know that if you’re looking to release music any time soon, it will inspire you to challenge yourself to think of things in a new and innovative way. Luminary is a piano/ambient music record for mindfulness, focus, and growth, and it not only hit #1 on iTunes and Amazon New Age charts, but it is also featured on the popular meditation apps Insight Timer and Simple Habit. There are meditation videos, a soon-to-be paper journal, affirmations… She’s created a whole brand with this record, you guys. As a marketing geek, I find it totally fascinating, and I can’t wait to share our conversation with you. So let’s get into it! In this episode Aeriol has an illuminating chat with musician, composer and avid meditator Cheryl B. Engelhardt about the use of music and meditation to overcome anxiety and to have more clarity, focus and ease in ones daily life. Cheryl shares her own amazing story as well as the track "Earthshine" from her new album "Luminary" due out Feb 7, 2020. Guest Bio: After two weeks in a half-abandoned mountain town on the Greek island of Crete at an artist residency, Cheryl B. Engelhardt flew home to New York with something special in her pocket… and on her hard drive. She had over 60 minutes of music that she composed and recorded on a grand piano in a stone room. Engelhardt spent half her time in Greece composing and the other half editing and producing the audio (including reversing the audio of plucked piano strings and a bell, giving the album an electronic/orchestra feel without being synthetic). The album is called “Luminary” - 10 tracks of six-minute pieces, some piano-only, some piano, voice. www.iamaluminary.com We hope you enjoy this fun and lively conversation and that you will continue to lean into Healing Body Mind and Soul. Cheryl B. Engelhardt is the composer and author of “Luminary” - music and affirmations for mindfulness, focus, and growth. The New York film, commercial, and social justice choral composer turned to creating music specifically for self-awareness after her decade-long struggle with panic attacks. In attempts to find music that supported her anxiety management, writing “Luminary” in a small abandoned mountain town in Greece became her solution. Cheryl graduated from Cornell University and lives in the Hudson Valley in New York. After graduating from Cornell and spending several months SCUBA diving for the United States Geological Survey, she landed a job at a New York City commercial editing house which led to her next job at a jingle composing studio. There, Cheryl started first as a technology assistant, then as a composer and music supervisor, writing music for Fortune 500 companies' commercials. During this time, her love of performing took over and while working in the ad industry, she put together her band and recorded several albums. Currently she is now focused on her lates project, Luminary. She has found a way to quell her anxiety with music, meditation, and exercise. She shares her method and her music expertise on The Minds Gym Podcast.
