In this revealing episode of The MCP, I sit down with Grammy-nominated songwriter, guitarist, and Americana mainstay Will Kimbrough for a wide-ranging conversation on the hard truths and quiet joys of a life in music. From his early days as a 12 year old electric guitar player to getting signed to EMI, and then John Prine's Oh Boy Records, to his work with Jimmy Buffett, Shemekia Copeland, and Todd Snider, Will offers a masterclass in musical longevity, humility, and hustle.A few of the stories and names he mentions reminded me of what I sometimes foolishly take for granted — namely my geographical proximity to musical greatness. For instance celebrated producer Jay Joyce has a studio not 50 hundred feet away from where I now sit, and in the other direction, three houses opposite, is Eric McConnell's studio, the legendary location where was recorded my favorite album of all time, Todd Snider's East Nashville Skyline.Incidentally, in the picture at top I am sitting across the table from that album's producer. I was so excited I had to share the story of discovering that album in a CD listening station at Waterloo records in Austin in the closing moments of an otherwise very dismal experience, which was me playing SXSW in 2004. That album is why I moved to East Nashville, and why I live there still. Crazy but true.Back to Will. Kimbrough opens up about navigating the highs and lows of the industry—learning to trust a team, the freedom of doing things DIY, and how obligation can become an artist's best creative ally. His career parallels a number of iconic Nashville personalities and institutions, like Mike Grimes (with whom Kimbrough formed the beloved trio the Bis-quits and signed to Prine's Oh Boy Records). Finally we get into his life-changing work with veterans through Songwriting with Soldiers and post-traumatic growth programs, and share a few stories about sobriety (his, mostly) and how he's managed to steer clear of some of the darker potholes that might have otherwise claimed a career now well into in its fourth decade. And yes—there's a live performance Kimbrough's song “For the Life of Me,” with me in there on guitar.00:00:00 "Desired Obligation" 00:01:08 Congrats on the Grammy Nom, Will 00:03:06 What caught your ear early on? 00:04:12 Seeing Bruce Springsteen on your 12th birthday 00:05:19 Riffing with Doyle at Grimey's about the power of earlier radio 00:06:18 The first thing Will did with an electric guitar 00:09:04 Constant Throughput makes you less precious 00:10:19 Riffing on Jay Joyce 00:11:51 Getting signed - "the shackles were on" 00:17:22 The collateral positives of getting signed 00:20:18 how to negotiate the tension between personal freedom and teamwork 00:23:11 Meeting Jimmy Buffett through Todd Snider 00:24:32 Trying to get dropped and forming the Bis-quits 00:26:49 Energy optimism and drive in finding a manager or launching a record 00:27:20 Why is it you make your best work when you're in a bad way? 00:28:48 Will's collective songwriting 00:31:31 Writing records with Todd Snider East Nashville Skyline and the Devil You Know 00:32:33 Korby's "East Nashville Skyline" story 00:35:54 The story about Todd Snider's fallout with Jimmy Buffett 00:38:00 Getting addicted to the school of Todd and Rodney Crowell and that crew 00:38:56 A version of the dream as expressed by Korby 00:39:55 Working with Shemekia Copeland 00:40:44 Warrior PATHH program 00:41:39 Wills Bob Dylan movie story 00:44:42 Setting up "For the Life of Me" live in studio 00:53:06 Will Kimbrough performs "For the Life of Me" 00:57:07 "Addicted to gratitude" 00:59:53 A story about John Prine's "Hello in there" 01:02:50 Are you melancholy or even-keeled? 01:05:41 How have you stayed open to the constant change? 01:07:30 Some notes on sobriety 01:12:27 That plato quote about everyone is fighting a hard battle 01:15:17 Talking about reading and writing 01:17:15 How a story about a song connects people 01:18:00 A story about writing with Jimmy Buffett Get full access to The Morse Code with Korby Lenker at korby.substack.com/subscribe

It was a crazy, and at times hilarious week in the NFL, but before Bomani Jones recaps Week 8 he begins today's episode by discussing Dwyane Wade's sculpture. Why does it look so bad and why have modern day sculpture artists gotten worse? (0:53) From there Bomani first talks about Jameis Winston and the Browns who had a big upset win over the Baltimore Ravens. Bomani says that watching Jameis is like watching Uncut Gems, while listening to him talk sounds like you're at a church. (4:15) Then Bomani covers Anthony Richardson's statements of being tired, and the insane Bears hail mary, more specially the Bears corner who let the catch happen because he was taunting the fans. (9:30) After briefly talking about Trevon Diggs' comments to a reporter, Bomani transitions to Nick Bosa who made headlines for wearing a MAGA hat after the conclusion of last nights game. Bomani listens to Bosa's postgame statements or lack thereof, and asks the question to Bosa, why is this important? Bomani compares Bosa's actions to what Colin Kaepernick's stand and why he suffered so much more than Nick Bosa. (22:40) And finally, we get another round of If You Haven't Heard stories and your voicemails on the crazy things you've seen at a youth sporting events. My guest Max Frye fronts the band Lost Hearts. He and his bandmates have a pop sensibility with a big rock sound. Max comes across as humble and grounded, possibly because he's worked with many musicians who are more experienced than himself. This is an experience we share.   Lost Hearts formed earlier this year and thus consider themselves a very new band. At their core, the band members are working musicians that have played in plenty of cover and tribute bands. They now perform and tour as an original band, although they still mix in some of their favorite covers.   In this episode, Max shares the story of how the band came to be, and their early days of songwriting together. We also talk about the band's recent interview on Izzy Presley's Another FN Podcast, which brought them to the attention of heavy metal champion and broadcaster Eddie Trunk, performing unreleased music, his views on pop and big choruses, release strategy, their record label search, lessons learned as a working musician, merch, the upcoming Lost Hearts performance at the Tacos & Tequila Festival in Lubbock Texas, and working toward the next level.   Please enjoy my conversation with Max Frye. Drawing on the concepts presented in Matt's book, Hooks: Lessons on Performance, Business, and Life from a Working Musician, Kat Edmonson joins Matt to discusschoosing the right environment to spark and capture inspiration, coping with criticism and expectations in high-exposure performance opportunities, gaining strength through improvement, perseverance, and creativity, realizing one's authentic aspirations and pursuing a new path, andfinding meaning and balance that transcends the public persona.  Kat Edmonson is an award-winning songwriter and singer "with an equal foothold in jazz, cabaret, and vintage cosmopolitanism pop" (The New York Times). She has been featured on Austin City Limits, Tiny Desk Concerts, A Prairie Home Companion, and The Late Show. The New York Times describes her music as "fresh as a spring bouquet," while NPR says, "Hearing Edmonson makes it virtually impossible to do anything but stop and listen."Kat holds a deep and longstanding commitment to creating the highest quality recordings possible, working with multi-GRAMMY®-award-winning producers and audio engineer legends Frank Filipetti, Fernando Lodeiro, Ed Cherney, Phil Ramone, and the recording giant Al Schmitt (24-time-GRAMMY®-award-winner) who said of Kat, "She is a tremendous talent … with a style and charm that reaches fans in the worlds of blues, rock, pop, and beyond."In 2013, The Songwriters Hall of Fame awarded Kat the Abe Olman Scholarship Award for Excellence in Songwriting. "Intuitive about melody and handy with a turn of phrase (The New York Times), the songsmith has been writing since she was a little girl, having published over 40 songs. JAZZIZ magazine says, "…her lasting contribution might very well be her songs." NPR says, "She's a savvy student of '60s film soundtracks, jazz-pop stylists, and Brill Building songcraft, nodding to her influences at every turn. But her take on those stylized musical languages is so fresh and fluent that the referencing never feels cumbersome." Her original song "Lucky" was featured in the Coca-Cola "Footprints" ad from the 2014 Winter Olympics. The Texas native began crafting her signature sound while performing in Austin's local club circuit for years before releasing her debut LP, Take To The Sky, in 2009. In addition to her headline tours, Kat has gone on the road in support of Lyle Lovett, Chris Isaak, Gary Clark, Jr., Jaime Cullum, and Shawn Colvin and has opened shows for Smokey Robinson, George Benson, Amos Lee, Michael Kiwanuka, Asleep at the Wheel, Nick Lowe, and Willie Nelson.Kat Edmonson lives in New York.In winter 2022, Kat made her theatrical debut in "The Hang,": a new jazz opera by Taylor Mac and Matt Ray. Upon its opening, the off-off Broadway show received "Critic's Pick" in The New York Times, highlighting Kat's "extraordinary artistry." About her performance, Vulture praises the burgeoning actress for her "weightless, soaring scat arias," The Wrap says, "Kat Edmonson emerges as the Teresa Stratus of off-off-Broadway." "The Hang" imagines the final hours of the life of Socrates as he asks his friends to use every moment left to think on virtue.Matt Wilson gained national exposure as the "Piano Man" in the First National Tour of Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp's Tony-award-winning musical Movin' Out. What does it take to be a successful working musician? Is it all about being the first one they call for major tours and shows? Performing on the biggest albums? Or is it something else - something much more about mindset than music? According to musician, speaker, author, producer and creative entrepreneur Jermaine Morgan, it takes more to be a successful musician and creative than technical skill and the right numbers in your phone. As a veteran of the music business, and having seen the pinnacle of music ministry, he knows that the key to success is more about character, work-ethic, and discipline than it is about fills and runs. He's now written a book in which he outlines a framework for musicians who desire to build a career that will stand the test of time. Having been raised in a home that valued hard-work and hustle in his native Mississippi, Jermaine decided to fully pursue music after years of studying.  He then moved to Atlanta where he worked his way through the ranks of the local music scene. His tenacity paid off when he was hired as the bass player and later music director for one of Atlanta's premier mega-churches, New Birth M.B. Church. However, Jermaine was never content to remain simply a top-tier performer. Over the years he has developed a business around his music that includes bass playing courses, a huge YouTube library of videos, speaking engagements, entrepreneurial training, production services and much more. In this inspiring and wisdom-packed interview, Jermaine unveils the key mindset shifts he made in order to overcome insecurity and self-doubt, and eventually become the confident and disciplined musician and creative leader he is today.Topics covered in this interview with Jermaine Morgan How he developed the mindset of a entrepreneur instead of simply performing or producing How his family background primed him for business even before he had his own businessHow his low seasons as an intern helped prepare him for his rise in the industry and how his work-ethic Why he started creating opportunities for himself instead of waiting for people to call or make him offersHow to deal with your self-doubt when stepping into new levels of Why the power of affirmation is so essential to moving forward with your goals  How his faith in God helps guide his daily decisions as a father and artistHis advice to musicians and creatives who are dealing with a crisis of confidence Get connected with Jermaine MorganBuy “10 Ways to Success: The Working Musician” on Jermaine's website / on Amazon / on our recommended books pagehttps://www.facebook.com/jermainemorgan2Artist/https://www.linkedin.com/in/jermainemorgan/https://twitter.com/jmorganbasshttps://www.jermainemorgan.net/

It's a tough business we work in. Often times we're working from paycheck to paycheck, and some items such as health insurance can be considered a luxury to those that work in the trenches, trying to make a living in the music industry. Then there's Music Health Alliance. Founded in 2013 with the goal of helping find affordable (and in some cases, next to nothing in cost) health / medical insurance for anyone who works within the music business. Shelia Shipley Biddy who is the COO and Senior Advisor for MHA discusses what options are available for anyone who works in the music biz, and is seeking to find the medical insurance coverage that they can actually afford. With over 4 decades of diverse music industry experience and a continued passion for the well being of music and its makers, Shelia Shipley Biddy is the perfect advocate for the music industry. Her career began in an entry-level position at the legendary Monument Records (home to Roy Orbison, Larry Gatlin, and Kris Kristofferson). Over the next eight years, she worked her way up the ranks of RCA and MCA to become Vice President of Promotion at MCA and most notably, the first woman to sit at the helm of a major record label in Music City. During her tenure with MCA, the label was named Country Label of the Year seven times by Billboard Magazine, three times by R&R Magazine, and the promotion department garnered over 137 # 1 singles under her leadership. Shelia went on to become senior vice president and general manager of Decca Records, another first for a woman in Nashville. Decca's roster included Mark Chesnutt, Lee Ann Womack, Gary Allan, Rhett Akins, Chris Knight, and others. Shelia has continued to leave a positive mark on music as an artist manager and partner with Hallmark Direction Company and as President of Flying Island Entertainment. Shelia was voted Gavin Magazine's Country Promotion Vice President of the Year on three occasions, and Nashville Life Magazine named her one of Nashville's Top 25 Most Influential Women and named one of Billboard Magazine's 2019 Top 100 Country Power Players. She was presented with the Country Radio Broadcasters President's Award recognizing her significant contribution to the marketing, production, growth and development of the Country Radio Seminar and the services that CRB provides to the country radio and music communities. In 2012, she was inducted into the SOURCE Hall of Fame, an organization she co-founded in 1991 to support female executives in the Nashville music industry. She is a 1992 Alumni and past President of Leadership Music. She has served on the Boards of Country Radio Broadcasters, Leadership Music, Academy of Country Music, NARAS, Nashville Film Commission, and the Music Industry Retirement Center. She is also a member of Brentwood Baptist Church. Shelia has been married to a music publisher, Ken Biddy, for over 27 years and together they share a blended family of five children and six grandchildren. Shelia's addition to the MHA team is like coming home. Six years ago the Board of the Manhattan School of Music faced a daunting decision: who would guide the school into its second century?  They turned to someone with a long history with the school, James Gandre.  Gandre joined MSM as an administrative assistant in the mid-1980s and rose through the ranks.  But before then, he'd been auditioning for gigs as a tenor with symphonies and choirs.  He continued to do so even after he began in administration.  He tells Alec about his journey from small-town Wisconsin, to being an out gay man in San Francisco in the early 80s, to his long rise through the ranks at MSM -- and he shares his thoughts on the future of his venerable institution.

John Vento is often called a chameleon in the Pittsburgh music scene; and, while his critics may use the term as a pejorative, Vento views it as a compliment. He understands that they’re motivated by the frustration of their inability to lock him into a specific musical style. After all, the front man for the high-energy, hard-rockin’ bands, The Businessmen, and the Nied’s Hotel Band, is also known for his introspective, brooding solo recordings. Rather than a drawback, however, Vento considers such diversity to be among his strengths; and his fans agree. They relish sharing his tumultuous trek toward achieving his artistic vision, which he accomplishes by channeling a blend of eclectic influences through his own, raw emotions. Helping to engineer the roller coaster ride is a stout core of colaborators, including John Randall Fox, Buddy Hall, Tim Hadley, and Frank Ferraro, along with renowned playwright/lyricist, Amy Hartman. Many members of this crew have been with him for more than a decade; and it’s easy to understand why, as Vento consistently showers them with appreciation and accolades. Though a one-of-a-kind performer, he professes a great distaste for the word, “solo,” insisting that, “Without my collaborators, I would not have accomplished anything.” That’s no surprise to those who know him, as he truly is a humble, loving, and grateful person, who treasures his family and friends. Certainly, that comes across, loud and clear, in his honest, from-the-heart songs; and that, undoubtedly, is another quality which endears him to his fans. As he puts it, “If just one person is touched in some small way by one of my songs, that’s the greatest reward that I could receive.” Of course, it’s purely logical that Vento would find a great following in this town. His steely resistance to categorization is the very essence and backbone of Pittsburgh. Built by a veritable melting pot of blue-collar workers, the once-gritty city has risen from the slag heap, through the smoke and haze, to become a sparkling, spectacular hub of culture and learning. Yet, it remains true to its deeply-forged identity. John’s 2019 MTS release is “Love, Lust and Other Wreckage.” His single, “Rainbows And Lightning” reached the Top 20 on iTunes Canada charts, receiving national and international airplay and charting. John is a January 2019 Billboard Magazine Emerging Artist.PRESS KIT: https://drive.google.com/open?id=10iOvRzKfk54bCkbs6FSIGkhI8zcEum8H www.johnvento.comhttps://www.facebook.com/johnventomusichttps://twitter.com/JventoMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y65K1Hu2uik

"What's Goin Down In Downtown J-Town" is recorded at 3rd City Sound located in Downtown Joliet on the third floor above the place that did so much to cultivate this great music scene, Chicago Street Pub. Or as I like to call it, The Chi'er. I am your host Tom Maslowski. Along with me, whether stoic or animated, David Francis engineering and co-hosting out of his mind.   In each of our episodes you can count on two songs with an interview in between from each artist or band. Though our shows are pre-recorded, we release them as live shows. We just mean that we captured the moments as they happened. There is no editing or pitch correcting done. Dave gives everything a good solid mix as to sooth your ears, but that's the extent of it.   This episode features Alex Hoffer. His style is a mix of blues, rock, and funk. His voice is incredibly smooth. He plays all over Joliet and the surrounding areas. He has opened for Howie Day and The Gin Blossoms. Recently, Alex has been playing a ton of shows from Wisconsin to Missouri. He's one of the easiest people to work with in the music world. His original material hits the mark with great hooks and lyrics that tell a story. He is a master at drawing the audience in. Alex is all over the theme song for our show. He reads some lines in the monologue, and he's singing with John Condron on the vocals for the tune. I think we did a good job of picking his brain for your listening pleasure.
