Voice Of GO(r)D is pleased to welcome back to the show Mr Chace Barber, one of the founders and very public face of Edison Motors, the British Columbia based manufacturer of diesel electric hybrid trucks. In this discussion, Chace updates us on Edison's move to Golden BC and fills us in on why they won't be making trucks for the American market anytime soon (Hint - the EPA and US DOT are mewling cabbages) which leads into some extended editorializing from Mr Barber you typically wouldn't hear in Edison marketing videos. I'm happy to be an outlet! Chace also answers a few of my questions on regulation vis a vis truck design for a chapter to be included in the book.Since recording this episode, Edison was given an interesting warning from Tesla regards a humorous piece of marketing that Edison has been using since they started. Given everything else we know about the Big Cheese at Tesla, and his KayFabe public Brolationship breakdown with the President this past week, it should come as no surprise that Tesla really do have something lodged firmly up their rear ends.https://www.tiktok.com/@_edison.motors/video/7512111442842176824You can find Chace and Edison all over the internet -https://www.tiktok.com/@_edison.motorshttps://x.com/EdisonMotorsLtdhttps://www.youtube.com/@EdisonMotorshttps://edisonmotors.ca/In the intro I mention an article that I was asked to provide comment for by a new (to me) Canadian online Business Magazine called The Logic. " Their books have been translated into French, Dutch, Mandarin, and Japanese. Check out the latest episode of our Conversational Selling podcast to learn more about Julie and Jean-Benoît.In this episode, Nancy, Julie, and Jean discuss the following:Writers' transition from a creative role to the business aspectThe key messages in "Going Solo"Working more hours vs. thinking differentlyThe importance of understanding the client's expectations and needsThe value of negotiating on multiple levels simultaneouslyThe significance of saying "no" as a critical term in negotiationsConstructive refusal tips: polite ways to decline offersKey Takeaways:I'm a writer and a creator, but I'm also a business person, and I realized that I was the hierarchical equal of my client. You won't earn more if you work more; you'll earn more if you think things differently. The important thing that you do when you want to go solo is to understand your purpose and to love what you want to do.You immediately have intellectual property whenever you write something definite and not a list."The book is really for anybody who wants to start a business. But we're working from experience and maybe addressing more people in the creative field. Mind you, starting a business is creative, period. And I think one of the issues probably applies to all entrepreneurs. You know, you want to do something, be self-employed, and work from your passion. And then you very quickly must understand that it's a business. And it's hard for people to switch from being passionate about something to being business-like. And so, the book takes everybody through from the very beginning, writing your business plan through negotiation and operations and management and all the things you need to understand to make your passion make a living for you." – JULIE"It depends on whom you sell. Sometimes, the market that you have is very small. In effect, when we're magazine writers like us, we sell to about five or six publications. A lot of people publish these publications. But the person we must convince, the gatekeeper, is the editor-in-chief. And so, in that case, convincing them is putting together what we call the ingredients of a good idea, what's in it for them, what's so special about it. Sometimes, we have clients who are completely unknown to us. Some people want us to write a book on them. And so, in that case, most of the selling is just teaching the person how our business works because they have no clue. And if we do a good job there, we will have a client that will understand better where they will evolve." – JEAN"The book is about communication, particularly understanding your client's expectations and needs. So, for instance, we have people who want writing projects who don't really understand what involved the time and the work and what is involved in putting together some writing. So, part of our job is finding out how much they understand. And it's important to do that work sort of upstream from signing a contract with somebody and because it's all going to figure into how much you charge for it." – JULIE"I would say that you will quickly be busy once you have your business going. A very important thing is figuring out your purpose. Julie alluded to that. But you know, if you start a school for social dancing, you're not going to make all the hundreds of little decisions, whether your purpose is to start a franchise of school dancing or have your clients win the Olympics of social dancing or create a shoe for social dancing. You will not choose your clients in the same way as your venue, and you won't publicize in the same way. So, the idea of having a purpose, which is what you are doing this for, is very important. It's the essence of a business plan, which is not a 200-page document but a really, really a document about yourself. And knowing thyself better is the old Socrates motto, really applies to self-employed people." – JEANConnect with Julie Barlow and Jean-Benoît Nadeau:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/juliebarlow/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jean-benoit-nadeau/Website: https://nadeaubarlow.com/Try Our Proven, 3-Step System, Guaranteeing Accountability and Transparency that Drives RESULTS by clicking on this link: https://oneofakindsales.com/call-center-in-a-box/   Connect with Nancy Calabrese:Twitter:https://twitter.com/oneofakindsalesFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/One-Of-A-Kind-Sales-304978633264832/Website:https://oneofakindsales.comPhone: 908-879-2911LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ncalabrese/Email: leads@oneofakindsales.com

And instead of doing everything okay or doing everything good, I wanted to do a lot of things great. I want to do really well and be successful. And I was just managing.”“I had someone who told me to do what I was passionate about. And that truly paid off. I think anywhere that I invested - because I was passionate about children, children's cancer, or small businesses - I did well, that's where I shined. And that's where I did better. And that's where I made the most impact.”“I really think when people work together for one cause, they can make a bigger impact than spreading $1,000 here and $1,000 there. Let's come together and make a really big impact.”“I think that's what we're all missing…we're writing down this big list of priorities. Brian Dote has been orbiting near “Black Swan” (type) events all of his professional life. To qualify as a “Black Swan,” an event has to be: Completely unpredictable and rare: Hugely impactful: People love to say after the event, we saw it coming (which they didn't). Brian worked on Steve Jobs' team that designed, built and launched the first iPhone, which changed the arc of and accelerated the course of history. He also worked near the center of the Human Genome Project, which equally changed mankind's understanding of…mankind. Later in his career, he was selected as Mid-Pacific Institute's (a cutting edge independent school in Honolulu) first Chief Innovation Officer, where, over five years, he shifted its faculty and students into exploration of virtual and augmented reality, maker mindsets, artificial intelligence and enhanced robotics. Along the way he was named as one of Hawaiʻi Business Magazine's “20 for the Next 20,” meaning an influential figure who will help shape the future of the 50th State for decades to come. At Brian's LinkedIn page we read: “Shall we play a game? How about a nice game of chess? Ahhh WOPR. =) I was a child of the 80s and from the popular movies of my youth spawned a love for computers and programming. I had a voracious appetite for all things programming. In elementary school I learned AppleSoft BASIC and programmed my own Choose Your Own Adventure/Zork games. In high school I went on to learn FORTRAN and satisfied my senior year math requirement by taking a class in “computer math.” Neither I nor my teacher knew what that heck that was, LOL, but it was a lot of fun and since then I've always been a life-long learner. I strongly believe, if you are not learning, you're dying. And I've got too much left to do to die now! After getting my Master of Science in Information Systems, I made my way to Silicon Valley and worked at a DSL provider, bioinformatics/genomics/proteomics company, Cisco Systems, and finally, at Apple. I have a passion for innovation and problem-solving and I'm always the person in the room that tries to use a different lens to solve the hard problems. I aim to leverage my diverse toolbox of skills and experiences to bring a unique perspective. That's how I ended up with five USA patents for my work on the amazingly talented team building some of the first mobile web software for the world's first iPhone. I am the lead mobile developer (iOS/Swift) at Ecobot, an early stage startup that has received $1.1 million in funding to-date. Ecobot allows environmental consultants to swiftly enter field data via their mobile device, access the data for report building, and automatically generate regulatory PDFs. I have a strong passion for the intersection of technology and education and I love to provide time and expertise in these areas. I am a board member of the Education Incubator, a member of the Innovation Committee at PBS Hawaii, and a member of the Advisory Board for the Academy of Industrial & Engineering Technology at Waipahu High. I was a 2017 honoree in Hawaii Business Magazine's 20 for the next 20 and a Webby Honoree for my web development work on Springfield Town Center in 2009. My specialties include: UI and UX design, customer journey mapping and workflows, Swift development for iOS, visual design, responsive design principles, website optimization, CMS, JavaScript, AJAX, HTML, CSS, Git/Github, DevOps principles, JIRA, Confluence, and an enthusiastic Slacker, err, user of Slack. While I don't know everything, there is nothing I can't learn, and master quickly. Except maybe baking. To learn more about why Brian was named “20 for the Next 20,” click here.  The post 39.
