In this episode of the Mind the Kids, Clara Faria speaks with Professor Nathalie Auger and Professor Howard Steiger about new research exploring how maternal anorexia nervosa may influence children's mental health and neurodevelopment.Using a large population-based cohort, the study examines links between maternal eating disorders and outcomes such as anorexia nervosa, attentional difficulties, and other psychiatric risks in offspring. The discussion highlights the role of genetic vulnerability, environmental exposure, and epigenetic mechanisms, offering a nuanced understanding of how risk is transmitted across generations. The episode also considers important clinical implications, including the benefits of early treatment, the importance of reducing stigma, and how supporting maternal mental health can improve outcomes for future generations.A must-listen for professionals in child and adolescent mental health, psychiatry, psychology, and anyone interested in eating disorders and developmental research.Read the CAMH journal paper ‘Maternal anorexia nervosa and risk of mental and neurodevelopmental morbidity in offspring'Sam Amar, Gabriel Côté-Corriveau, Mimi Israël, Howard Steiger, Nancy Low, Nicholas Chadi, Émilie Brousseau, Nahantara Lafleur, Nathalie AugerFirst published: 02 December 2025 https://doi.org/10.1111/camh.70051Get a free CPD/CME certificate for listening to this podcast by registering for a FREE ACAMH Learn account at https://bit.ly/4fF4BBWVisit https://www.acamh.orgFacebook and LinkedIn search / ACAMHInstagram https://www.instagram.com/assoc.camhBluesky https://bsky.app/profile/acamh.bsky.socialX https://x.com/acamh

On today's episode, Deacon Geoff is joined by Marie Brousseau, a Canadian teacher and essayist, to discuss her most recent Catholic Exchange article “Why People Fall from Faith: The Fear of Accepting God.” Together, they explore how the loss of faith is often less about intellectual doubt and more about a deeper fear of surrender. Marie shares that accepting God requires trust, humility, and a willingness to be changed—something that can feel uncomfortable in a culture that values control and independence. As a result, many people gradually drift away through distraction, indifference, or attachment to comfort rather than making a conscious rejection of God. Deacon Geoff and Marie also reflect on the hope within this struggle, emphasizing that God continually invites us to trust Him more deeply. By recognizing these fears and responding with openness, we can move toward a more authentic and courageous faith. Ever wonder how a "Hallmark movie" setting shapes a family for generations? In this episode, Mike Brousseau shares stories from the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. It's a place so deeply tied to his family that there's literally a mountain bearing their name. From a French-Canadian lumberjack who couldn't read but could build perfect spiral staircases, to a spicy French-Canadian grandmother who fixed refrigerators before YouTube existed, to a charming Dairy Queen meet-cute that almost didn't happen, Mike reveals how the rugged, community-focused spirit of Vermont stays in your blood. No matter how far away you travel.〰️

In this episode, I sit down with Jessica Brousseau to talk about the stark contrast between two very different postpartum experiences: one marked by trauma, isolation, and silent struggle, and another supported by comprehensive care, openness, and healing. We discuss the weight of postpartum mental health screenings, the pressure many mothers feel to “be fine,” and the critical role providers play in recognizing and supporting maternal mental health. This conversation is about resilience, accepting help, and learning to embrace the new version of yourself that motherhood brings. I recently took a road trip to eastern Massachusetts. Most people visiting this classic New England area in October are either leaf peeping or visiting the witchy town of Salem, but you listeners know me better than that. I am much more excited about the brown leaves about to get into my compost pile and meeting composters like Andrew Brousseau, operations manager at Black Earth Compost. On my way in, winding through the historic streets of Gloucester, my anticipation grew as I saw so many little green food scrap collection buckets in front of the homes. I followed those buckets all the way to Black Earth's new two-acre ASP compost facility where the contents of those little green buckets end up. This is Black Earth's fourth facility in Massachusetts. It's located on top of the town's old landfill.
