The NIOSH multi-year firefighter cancer study identified that fire fighters have a 9% greater chance of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14% greater chance of dying from cancer than the general U.S. population. At the 2022 IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial, almost 75% of the names added to the wall (348 out of 469) were members who had died from occupational cancer. Overall, the IAFF reports that cancer caused 66 percent of the career firefighter line-of-duty deaths from 2002 to 2019. If these statistics don't get your attention…they should. This episode Justin White sits down with retired Driver Engineer Dan Knox as he humbly describes his journey with cancer from diagnosis to treatment to recovery to retirement. Driver Engineer Knox also discusses how his actions (or inaction) may have contributed to his diagnosis and what you should do to decrease your risk of being diagnosed as well. So come and join Justin, Chris Weaver, Grant Tinker and the 14th nicest guy on the job Dan Knox for a deep and honest discussion of his relationship with cancer at the Kitchen Table. As always, sit down, enjoy, and be ready to learn about cancer, how it could impact your life, and more importantly what you can do about it. All the resources discussed in this episode can be found attached to the activity in Target Solutions.

Chris Weaver & the Cowboys talk saddles, industry growth, and what makes the Cowboy Lifestyle so special. Parents, you'll want to catch this one. We sometimes forget the benefits of being in the horse industry and living the cowboy lifestyle. Kids receive lasting impact including: a sense of responsibility, self-discipline and respect. Never underestimate the power of good people speaking into the lives of youth. We cover a lot of ground in this episode: Seeds of industry growth Breaking barriers to entry Challenging the idea that horses are an “expensive” sport The dual responsibility of sponsorship The importance of stewardship Supporting the next generation Ensuring the future of the cowboy lifestyle Chris Weaver, VP at Bob's Custom Saddles, has an extensive background as a horseman in the stock horse industry as well as years of experience in business and manufacturing. He joins Brian Dygert & Jody Brainard to share the history and vision of Bob's Custom Saddles and discuss the growth and future of the equine industry as a whole. Bob's created a strong foundation based on quality materials while supporting all levels of riders and disciplines within the western working horse industry. Passion for their product and the people they serve is apparent as Chris talks about stewarding their identity and the importance of passing on the values of the cowboy lifestyle to the next generation. About Bob's Custom Saddles Bob's focus when creating a custom saddle is to fit the horse, fit the rider, improve ride-ability You have to answer at least 15 questions when ordering a Bob's Custom Saddle Bob's has used the same tree manufacturer and Hermann Oak leather since it's inception 47 years ago Exhibitors have won an estimated $24M in Bob's Custom Saddles If you have a serial number, Bob's can tell you exactly when the saddle was made and for who How Does Industry Growth Occur and What Challenges Do We Face? The Cowboys respond to a question from a listener: How does rapid growth and outside interest in our sport affect the industry? Growth comes from many sources: product, passion, and organic growth from outside sources (think Yellowstone & The Cowboy Channel). Interest in the western lifestyle is strong and enthusiasm is at a high with more spectator-driven events being offered. But there is an inherent challenge for many of the performance horse disciplines. Many performance events can be difficult to understand and appreciate unless you are already educated in the rules, judging practices, and understand “quality” for that specific event. Educating the audience and bringing awareness to how the event is judged is required for spectators to truly enjoy the event. Another barrier to growth is the expense of getting started. If you already know and love the industry, have roots in it, and have the passion to compete, you don't mind trading in a vacation home, boat, or fancy car for your horse, training fees, board, entry fees, etc. But what about those who are just getting started? They may not even be sure this “horse thing” is for them. How do they get started without investing substantial amounts of money? And finally, why do people leave the industry? That may be a question for another time, but it's one that is important to understand if the equine industry is going to continue to experience healthy growth. Back in 2014, Corey Knowlton paid $350,000 for a hunting trip to Namibia to shoot and kill an endangered species. He’s a professional hunter, who guides hunts all around the world, so going to Africa would be nothing new. The target on the other hand would be. And so too, he quickly found, would be the attention. This episode, producer Simon Adler follows Corey as he dodges death threats and prepares to pull the trigger. Along the way we stop to talk with Namibian hunters and government officials, American activists, and someone who's been here before - Kenya’s former Director of Wildlife, Richard Leakey. All the while, we try to uncover what conservation really means in the 21st century. Reported & produced by Simon Adler with production help from Matthew Kielty. Special thanks to Chris Weaver, Ian Wallace, Mark Barrow, the Lindstrom family, and everyone at the Aru Game Lodge in Namibia. Farm Talk Segment 6 - Chris Weaver - Monty's Plant Food
Futurist Trond Arne Undheim interviews Chris Weaver, Distinguished Professor of Computational Media at Wesleyan University, Director of Smithsonian Videogame Pioneers Initiative and Research Scientist at MIT microphotonics center. Chris was busy this week also because the video game holding company he founded, ZeniMax Media (owner of major franchises such as The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, DOOM, RAGE, Wolfenstein, Prey, Dishonored, The Evil Within, and QUAKE), was acquired by Microsoft, reportedly for $7.5 billion. In this conversation, which was initially planned as a prep call, which gives the episode a bit of a behind-the-scenes characteristic, with prep questions and the whole thing, they instead end up going deep, for 1h 19 minutes. They talk about Chris’s early opportunity to shape the futuristic thinking at ABC, the Television network, his pioneering role as a video game company founder, as well as his new role capturing the important recent history of video games. As you will discover, they are a key to understanding both the 20th and the 21st century. Finally, they talk about how and why to teach our kids about computational media and the great challenge of making the complexity of the scientific system communicate with the binary political system that always look for simple answers. The takeaway is that the complexity of computational media is still poorly understood in society. However, when it is, and it will be, great change can happen. Video games, for example, provide the potential for much more fundamental experiences than most of us think about. The lessons from the tech development, sensory exploration and the metacognition that ensues, are already influencing several generations of software engineers. However, in order for that insight to reach our kids who are now playing these games, turning it into STEM insight, some translation work is needed. After listening, check out Bethesda as well as Chris Weaver's online profile:Bethesda Softworks https://bethesda.net/Video Games Pioneers Initiative https://invention.si.edu/video-game-pioneers-initiativeChris Weaver (Wesleyan University) https://www.wesleyan.edu/academics/faculty/cweaver/profile.htmlChris Weaver (LinkedIn) https://www.linkedin.com/in/chrissweaver/Chris Weaver (Wikipedia) https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Christopher_Weaver Chris Weaver (Twitter, @csweaver) https://twitter.com/csweaverBethesda founder concludes “what Microsoft owns, Sony cannot get” The sponsor of this episode is Yegii, the insight network, which creates on-demand teams carrying out consulting projects across industries such as financial services, education, industrial operations, software, energy, healthcare and life science, resulting in slide decks and interactive presentations. An apartment circuit party in New York City sparked online outrage a couple of weeks ago after videos emerged on social media in which about 30 guests were seen dancing, drinking, and violating social distancing guidelines without masks during a pandemic. I sit down with my dear good friend, journalist and writer Evan Ross Katz and Chris Weaver, a past contestant on The Voice also known by his drag persona Nedra Belle who was in the party and was tag in multiple videos that went viral. Chris Weaver, a 29-year-old New York native, grabbed America’s attention last September, opening Season 13 of The Voice with “Try A Little Tenderness” turning all four chairs! Chris’ soulful sounds even caused judges to throw articles of clothing in enjoyment of his sound. As if that wasn’t enough, Chris then introduced himself as a worship leader by day and drag queen by night! Chris continued to advance in the competition finishing in the Top 24, an untimely elimination indeed. Last December Weaver was brought back to perform in the season finale, where he introduced the world to his drag persona, Nedra Belle. Nedra performed “Bang Bang” alongside music superstar, Jessie J, and NYC singing drag group, Stephanie’s Child. While still leading worship on Sundays and doing weekly drag shows in New York City, Weaver says that he is living his dream by being able to travel and perform as both Chris and Nedra. Tales of a Red Clay Rambler: A pottery and ceramic art podcast
Today on the Tales of a Red Clay Rambler Podcast I have an interview with Chris Weaver. After rediscovering his grandmother’s Iron, he started making teapots that referenced its angular form. This has led to twenty-five years of exploring the form through a variety of firing techniques and forming methods. In our interview we talk about incorporating wooden parts into his functional ceramics, keeping the teapot form fresh, and making tools to create specific marks in clay. For more information on Chris visit www.chrisweaver.co.nz. This interview is part of a New Zealand series taped in April and May of 2018. I want to send a special thank you to the Ceramics Association of New Zealand for their support in making the series. Howlround are the duo of Robin The Fog and Chris Weaver who create recordings and performances entirely from manipulating natural acoustic sounds on a quartet of vintage reel-to-reel tape machines - with additional reverb or electronic effects strictly forbidden. This recording documents their first ever live performance at the Brighthelm Centre as part of the Resonance FM stage at the Great Escape Festival, Brighton, 18th May 2013. It was the first time these delicate, bulky, unpredictable machines had ever left the studio - a complete step into the unknown - and therefore something of an occasion. This recording is presented without edits or overdubs, just the sound of four machines, two people and a huge tangle of quarter-inch tape, looping and snarling precariously around the venue. By the end of the first quarter of the 20th century, physicists increasingly realized that quantum mechanics provided a powerful means of describing the behaviour of subatomic particles. But until that point it only described slow moving particles. When Paul Dirac combined special relativity with quantum mechanics, he found something even stranger, antimatter!
