Cartoon Brew contributor and animator Vincent Alexander constructed a piece back in April around the most influential filmmakers and examples of their work that you could trace back to the guys behind the Looney Tunes. In this episode, I'm joined by Vincent and we touch upon a few of those directors and their films. Some may blow you away!   Looney Tunes in the News! The Day the World Blew UP! A Looney Tunes Movie made it's WORLD PREMIERE AT ANNECY! In the world of animation, few names evoke as much nostalgia and admiration as the Looney Tunes. With iconic characters like Daffy Duck and Porky Pig, these beloved cartoons have entertained audiences for generations. The recent premiere of 'The Day the Earth Blew Up' at the Annecy Animation Festival has reignited interest in these classic characters, showcasing their enduring appeal in a modern context. A Stellar Premiere at Annecy The unveiling of 'The Day the Earth Blew Up' at the Annecy Animation Festival was nothing short of spectacular, drawing a crowd that was visibly moved by the charm and wit of the Looney Tunes legacy. Under the directorial guidance of Pete Browngardt, and brought to life by the talented voice work of Eric Bauza as both Daffy Duck and Porky Pig, Candi Milo as Petunia, Fred Tatascior as Farmer Jim and Ghostbusters 2 actor Peter MacNicol as The Invader; this feature-length adventure captured the hearts of those in attendance. The event itself was a vibrant celebration of animation, with 'The Day the Earth Blew Up' standing out as a highlight of the festival. From the moment the lights dimmed and the first scene rolled, the audience was immersed in a world filled with laughter, nostalgia, and the unmistakable zaniness of the Looney Tunes universe. Each joke landed with precision, eliciting hearty laughs, while the emotional beats of the story brought the crowd on a rollercoaster of feelings. The film's cleverly crafted narrative and beautifully executed 2D animation showcased the enormous effort and passion poured into its creation by Browngardt and his team. As Daffy and Porky navigated through their hilarious and often precarious journey to save Earth, the connection between the characters and the audience was palpable. The inclusion of scenes detailing the duo's upbringing and their comedic struggles with employment added layers to their personas, enriching the viewer's experience. Moreover, the portrayal of their friendship and resilience against the backdrop of an alien threat highlighted the timeless appeal of these characters, making every moment on screen feel both fresh and familiar. The Annecy premiere served as a powerful reminder of the magic that the Looney Tunes can bring to the big screen. It was a night where animation enthusiasts, critics, and newcomers alike were united in their appreciation for a franchise that continues to evolve while staying true to the heart and humor that has defined it for generations. A Return to Form for Looney Tunes In an era where digital animation dominates, 'The Day the Earth Blew Up' emerges as a beacon of classic animation prowess, masterfully marrying the age-old antics of Looney Tunes with contemporary storytelling finesse. This film is not merely a nod to the golden age of Warner Bros animation but a robust reaffirmation of its timeless appeal and relevance. By weaving a narrative that is as emotionally engaging as it is uproariously funny, it marks a significant milestone in the evolution of Looney Tunes, showcasing the adaptability and enduring charm of its characters. The genius of 'The Day the Earth Blew Up' lies in its ability to harness the quintessential elements that made Looney Tunes a household name—dynamic slapstick humor, sharp wit, and a knack for chaos—while infusing them with a modern sensibility that appeals to today's audiences. Daffy Duck's irreverent humor and Porky Pig's endearing stutter are complemented by a storyline that pits them against challenges that are both fantastical and surprisingly relatable, ensuring that the humor resonates on multiple levels. The movie excels in leveraging the rich history of its characters, providing them with a depth that adds a new layer of enjoyment for fans and newcomers alike. The exploration of Daffy and Porky's backstories and personal growth throughout their adventure adds a layer of complexity to their characters, making their triumphs all the more satisfying. By striking an ideal balance between the slapstick comedy that fans expect and the narrative depth that modern audiences crave, 'The Day the Earth Blew Up' revitalizes the Looney Tunes brand. It demonstrates the potential for these iconic characters to grow and thrive in the contemporary media landscape, ensuring that their antics will continue to entertain and inspire laughter for generations to come. This film does more than just revisit the past; it propels the beloved antics of Looney Tunes into the future, proving that some classics only get better with time. The Art of Blending Humor and Heart 'The Day the Earth Blew Up' masterfully intertwines the laugh-out-loud humor characteristic of the Looney Tunes with deeply touching moments, creating a rich cinematic tapestry that speaks to a wide array of emotions. The filmmakers ingeniously use the comedic escapades of Daffy Duck and Porky Pig not just as a vehicle for humor, but also as a means to explore themes of friendship, resilience, and determination. This dual approach ensures that the audience is not only entertained by the antics on screen but also emotionally invested in the characters' journeys. At its core, this film is a testament to the complexity of the Looney Tunes characters, who are capable of eliciting both belly laughs and tender moments within the span of a single scene. The dynamic between Porky Pig and Petunia Pig, for example, offers a glimpse into the more nuanced aspects of the characters' lives, enriching the narrative and providing a counterpoint to the high-energy comedic sequences. This delicate balance between humor and heart is what sets 'The Day the Earth Blew Up' apart, making it not just a comedy, but a story with soul. The effectiveness of this blend is further highlighted by the movie's animation style, which employs expressive character animations and vibrant visuals to enhance both the comedic and emotional impact of the story. By doing so, the film pays homage to the legacy of Looney Tunes animation while also pushing the boundaries of how these beloved characters can connect with contemporary audiences. Through its artful combination of humor and heart, 'The Day the Earth Blew Up' invites viewers to laugh, empathize, and perhaps even see a bit of themselves in the animated antics of Daffy, Porky, and the rest of the Looney Tunes gang. Critical Acclaim and Audience Reception Upon its unveiling, 'The Day the Earth Blew Up' quickly captivated critics and moviegoers, securing its place as a standout addition to the Looney Tunes' storied legacy. Critics have lauded the film for its inventive storytelling, seamless blend of classic and modern comedic elements, and its ability to weave heartfelt moments amidst uproarious laughter. The animation's quality, vibrant and expressive, received particular acclaim, highlighting the skill and dedication of the artists behind this project. Audience reactions mirrored this enthusiasm, with many expressing delight at seeing their favorite characters on the big screen in a narrative that felt both fresh and faithful to the essence of Looney Tunes. Viewers of all ages found themselves enchanted by the dynamic duo of Daffy Duck and Porky Pig, whose adventures brought not only nostalgia but also a sense of novelty that resonated with contemporary sensibilities. Social media buzzed with positive feedback, from tweets praising specific comedic sequences to Instagram stories capturing the joyous atmosphere of theater screenings. This wave of approval underscores the film's universal appeal and its success in reaching a broad demographic, from lifelong fans of Looney Tunes to a new generation experiencing the antics of these characters for the first time. The palpable excitement and commendations from both critics and audiences underscore the film's impact, reinforcing its status not merely as a successful animation but as a significant cultural event. This reception is a testament to the movie's quality and its role in the ongoing legacy of Looney Tunes, affirming that the charm and wit of these characters remain as vibrant and compelling as ever. The Implications for Future Looney Tunes Projects The enthusiastic reception of 'The Day the Earth Blew Up' heralds a potentially wide future for Looney Tunes, showcasing their potential to captivate modern audiences while retaining the essence that has made these characters beloved for decades. This film's success could pave the way for Warner Bros. to reassess their locked away film, Coyote Vs. Acme which is a live action/animation hybrid film starring Wile E. Coyote and John Cena. This film has had it's share of publicity and with a large push from 'Earth' it's possible the film could see the light of day. The industry's response and the public's embrace of this latest offering reinforce the idea that there's a keen appetite for content that marries nostalgia with innovation. As we look ahead, the question isn't whether there will be more Looney Tunes projects but rather how these characters will evolve to meet the expectations of a new generation while delighting long-time fans. The possibilities are as limitless as the imaginations of those at the helm of future projects, suggesting that the legacy of Looney Tunes is not only secure but set to soar to new heights. This Means Promos! The Art of Selling with Looney Tunes: Guest Mike Manolo

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 20, 2023 68:35

On this week's podcast, Mike Manolo returns to watch some brand promotions with The Looney Tunes dating all the way back to the 50's! During the Bugs Bunny Show, subsequently retitled, The Bugs Bunny and Road Runner Show; then finally The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show, brand commercials were created to advertise Tang, Alphabits and Koo-laid to kids! Surprisingly these commercials are very well done, due a large part to the fact that Friz Freleng, Chuck Jones, Robert McKimsom and even Tex Avery returned to work on them!  And of course Mel Blanc was there to provide those familiar voices. NEWS ACROSS THE LOONIVERSE: The award winning concert that was supposed to premier in Los Angeles in the new Peacock Theater has now been POSTPONED! We do not know when this will be resolved, but keep it right here for updates! The Tiny Toons Looniversity Panel has been transformed to just a screening at SDCC this year. We were supposed to have all of the newly announced cast take the stage, but now it'll just be a screening of the episodes. While we are bummed, we understand the reasoning and our hearts are with those SAG-AFTRA Members who worked on the show and are currently striking. The series is produced by Amblin Television in association with Warner Bros. Animation.  GAY PUR-EE (1962) Dir. Abe Levitow Written by Dorothy Jones and Chuck Jones This release is set to include 3 Newly restored Looney Tunes cartoons; For Scent-imental Reasons, French Rarebit and Louvre Come Back. Two of those are Pepe LePew cartoons! THIS MEANS PROMOS: From line-dancing to LeAnn Rimes to sporting the latest flip phone in 2003, the Looney Tunes have sure made their way around the Brand Marketplace as promotion artists. The voice talent included Joe Alaskey, Mel Blanc, Jeff Bergman, Greg Burson and even Mel's son, Noel Blanc during these years of endorsment. From TARGET to WAL-MART and from KOOL-AID to TANG, the Looney Tunes sure could sell product. Something Dan Romanelli taught us a few years back when we was first on and sold carrot cake baked goods with Bugs' famous namesake. If you haven't seen these commercials, you're in luck! They're all on youtube and surprisingly in good quality! I highly recommend checking them out when you can. Something else they did surprisingly well was mix live action elements alongside the cartoon characters interacting with them. The techniques seen on display above helped filmmakers Robert Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg when they made Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988). Many of the commercials spoken about during this episode stemmed from The promotions in between the cartoons of The Bugs Bunny Show (1959-1969) Want to support the podcast? The bite-sized short is only 3 minutes long and unlike the usual fair from this series, non of the character create any conflict that prevents them getting the job done so this is just for fun!  It starts with a Transylvania 6-5000 reference with the backdrop design appearing visually similar to that of Count Bloodcount! Then we get those magic words by Lola, "AbraCadabra" and BAM, a bat with a top hat drops down! This is a direct visual homage to what Count Bloodcount looks like in Bat form. When Tweety flies in dressed as a ghost, he spooks Sylvester and I took this to be a reference to Boo Appetweet! The Looney Tunes Cartoons short released in the first batch of shorts way back in 2020.  Then the jobs are dished out and the rest of the costumes are revealed. Porky is dressed as a pumpkin; this is for a gag later on that made me laugh out loud. Wile E. is dressed as the scarecrow, "If I only had a brain." Lola is a magician, making the Halloween magic happen. Bugs Bunny is dressed as Witch Hazel and later in the episode appears with the mask he wore in Broomstick Bunny; the "Ugliest" Witch of all! Petunia is dressed as a Astronaut and that's just silly. AND DAFFY IS BATMAN! During his candy check, he has the line, "Taste Tested and Bat-Duck Approved!" The utterance of BatDuck is a verbal reference to when Plucky Duck dressed as Batman in Tiny Toon Adventures! What a callback! The citizens of Looniburg show up as their costumes are equally as adorable. Pussyfoot is dressed as dracula, Hippity is dressed as a pirate AND EGGHEAD IS DRESSED AS A GREMLIN FROM FALLING HARE!!! SO COOL! Unlike the other entries, the Looney Builders have no problem getting these trick or treaters their tasty candy making it just a sugar filled outing and a ultra cute one at that. Bugs wearing this mask from Broomstick Bunny is just an excellent homage and truly inspired me to make this blog for those that might miss it this holiday season!  You can watch this one right now on Youtube at the link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuhjE982oLE   Be sure to watch the shorts mentioned as well or introduce them to the kids for additional cartoon treats this Halloween! Comment with your favorite homage in this and what's your favorite Looney Tunes Halloween short?!

This adds to the tension of the horror surrounding their adventures.    We recommend this special to old and new fans of Looney Tunes alike, but while we're glad we are being challenged with this comedic content, it won't be for everyone.   Let us know what you think in the comments! Hello Folks! Welcome to your best source of news surrounding the beloved Looney Tunes! For this episode, I'm joined by Long Time Looney Tunes' Fan, Comedian and Rotten Tomatoes Correspondent, Mark Ellis to discuss the latest happenings over at Warner Bros/Discovery and break down the storytelling convention of Breaking the 4th Wall in film, Tv and Podcasting?!   We start off with the news that broke via TvLine.com!   The following projects are NOW in need of being purchased to stream and my bet is on Hulu.   Batman: Caped Crusader is an animated reimagining of the Batman mythology by way of Batman: The Animated Series‘ own Bruce Timm, with J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves and Ed Brubaker also serving as EPs. Reeves of course directed The Batman, the big screen's most recent live-action take on the Dark Knight (now played by Robert Pattinson), while Abrams — in addition to of course numerous Star Trek and Star Wars projects, plus TV's Lost and Alias — is an EP on HBO Max's still-in-development Justice League Dark series.   MERRY LITTLE BATMAN In this animated family action comedy, when a six-year-old Damian Wayne finds himself alone in Wayne Manor, he must transform into “Little Batman” in order to defend his home and Gotham City from the crooks and super-villains intent on destroying Christmas.  Mike Roth executive-produces and directs, from a screenplay by Morgan Evans.     THE DAY THE EARTH BLEW UP In this animated movie penned by Kevin Costello, odd couple Porky and Daffy become unlikely heroes when their antics at a local bubble gum factory uncover a secret alien mind-control plot. Against all odds, the two grow determined to save their town — and the world. Pete Browngardt serves as executive producer.   - Writer Kevin Costello recently took to Twitter to tell fans that the film is coming together nicely and that it lives up to the brand as only a Daffy and Porky film can!   BYE BYE BUNNY The first-ever Looney Tunes Original animated movie musical boasts a screenplay and lyrics by Emmy Award winner Ariel Dumas, a head writer on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (and a huge Looney Tunes fan). The premise: After starring in a long-running Looney Tunes Broadway production, an exhausted Bugs Bunny decides it's time to trade in sold-out shows for life as a regular rabbit. That opens the door for the attention-craving Daffy Duck to bid for the lead role  — until he is kidnapped by an obsessive fan who has sinister plans for her favorite stage duck.   THE AMAZING WORLD OF GUMBALL: THE MOVIE Series creator Ben Bocquelet is directing and executive-producing this movie, which features a script written by Shane Mack and is designed to serve as a bridge between the original cult animated fantasy series (which ran six seasons on Cartoon Network, from 2011-2019) and the new one, which is titled The Amazing World of Gumball: The Series (and is also still happening). The yet-to-be titled movie begins when Gumball's biggest fan finds the series' “missing episode” and accidentally opens a portal connecting his world to Gumball's cartoon world. Sam Register, Vanessa Brookman and Sarah Fell will also serve as executive producers on the first original production to be ordered from Register and Brookman's Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe.   Did I Do That To the Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story This animated musical holiday special, written and executive-produced by Wyatt Cenec, and announced in September 2021, finds Jaleel White reprising his legendary nerd character for only the second time since Family Matters ended in 1998. FILMS Discussed: "Annie Hall" “American Psycho” “Fight Club” "Monty Python" “Spaceballs" "Wayne's World" “Ferris Bueller's Day Off” “High Fidelity” “Amélie” "Fleabag" "She-Hulk"   Looney Tunes Shorts Discussed: Duck Amuck - (1953) Rabbits Rampage - (1955) Hare Raising Hare - (1946) The Scarlett Pumpernickel (1950) (You can find these shorts on HBOMax... for now)   A Meta Compilation of Moments that show off some of the best moments of 4th Wall Breaks in Looney Tunes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJKif9d4cg4   What's your favorite scene where a character broke the 4th wall? SDCC: MERRY GO ROUND BREAKDOWN - Looney Tunes Panel

You made it! Here is the third part of my SDCC Looney Tunes Coverage! In the Indigo Ballroom, Warner Brothers Animation gracefully conducted a coup de grâce of epic proportions to their competition with 5 New Projects surrounding their Looney Tunes and Tiny Toons IP that are in production simultaneously! And that's not to mention, Coyote Vs. Acme which is another feature film we're getting next year!  Eric Bauza moderated the panel and brought out Alex Kirwan, Abe Audish, Nick Cash, Erin Gibson, and Ashleigh Crystal Hairston to the stage to discuss Looney Tunes Cartoons, Tiny Toons Looniversity, and Bugs Bunny Builders!  The presentation started with a Birthday Celebration surrounding Tweety's 80th! Then we were given the release date of Nov. 19th and 20th for King Tweety to be broadcast on Cartoon Network and HBO Max the following day! BUGS BUNNY BUILDERS: was next where we were treated to a full episode of the new show aimed at pre-school, but there is a lot to love in this family friendly series. "The world may change but the tunes adapt to fit in it without losing their main character traits." The big take away from this was the character interactions. Here, we'll see Foghorn Leghorn talk it up with Bugs Bunny and there will be so many cameos! LOONEY TUNES CARTOONS: Speaking of deep cut characters; we were given concept are and model sheets for older characters joining these new cartoons! These include Pussyfoot and Marc Anthony, Witch Hazel, Ralph Phillips, The Three Bears, and Sniffles! They brought with them a sneak peek of Hex Appeal, the Witch Hazel short and it is breathtaking! Check it out here: Hex Appeal! Then we were treated to a Comic Con Exclusive, with Ralph Phillips donning the cape and cowl and re-enacting the classic Batman: The Animated Series opening within a day dream! The crowd went nuts for that! A New Batch is on the way and we'll also see the full Witch Hazel short alongside a Halloween Special this FALL! TINY TOONS LOONIVERSITY! Tiny Toons Looniversity showed up with concept art, new details and a casting announcement! Ashleigh Crystal Hairston (Craig of the Creek) will be Babs Bunny in this series which will contain 30 minute episodes! We were also told the leads for the show would be Buster, Babs, Sweetie, Plucky and Hampton. With the faculty being made up of all the classic Tunes you know and love supporting their growth through the Performing Arts School! THE DAY THE EARTH BLEW UP! TITLE REVEALED! Daffy Duck and Porky Pig star in this Sci-Fi Animated Epic that will have the two idiots trying to save the world in the style of Looney Tunes Cartoons! This will be the first film from that team of Warner Bros Animators and it's written by Kevin Costello (Brigsy Bear.) BYE BYE BUNNY - FEATURE Before we were let out, we were provided an exclusive look from the new Musical Feature written by Ariel Dumas with songs by Tom Kitt who appeared at a piano and ready to sing us a song from the film. The song brought everyone's emotions out as it was set to a visual montage of Bugs Bunny from the Happy Rabbit to What's Opera Doc! and the lyrics were so nuanced I couldn't help but feel the weight of it.  THAT'S NOT ALL FOLKS! Available here: https://www.amazon.com/King-Tweety-Eric-Bauza We give King Tweety high praise for being a film that is entertaining from beginning to end with full on twists and turns that you may not see coming; I sure didn't. You'll find yourself quoting the lines days and days after as the writing is wickedly fast paced and unique to these characters, while being true to what has come before. The brotherly-love aspect is a great way to maintain a fresh storyline around Sylvester and Tweety that we haven't seen played out before and the way Granny is used here will make you want to rent the nearest scooter you can find. The animation is solid and the voice work is unmatched! Eric Bauza as Tweety and Sylvester never leave you with a false note. The songs are catchy and you'll want to re-watch it almost immediately! 4/5 Carrots!
