SEASON 3 EPISODE 90: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: To repeat myself - because I’m RIGHT - File motions to impeach Trump NOW. Move to impeach Trump today, AND KEEP MOVING to impeach Trump every day through next year’s midterms. Impeachment is UNDEFEATED. UNDEFEATED in American history. House Democrats: he handed you TWELVE, maybe FIFTEEN new counts on Friday night alone. Blatantly, brazenly illegal dismissals of Departmental Inspector Generals, just as Project 2025 promised, and the School Safety Board. Elimination of oversight. Elimination of legal protections against the mass murder of children. In the old days you might’ve arrested Trump. Now you are limited to impeachment bills that will all fail EXCEPT THEY WILL ULTIMATELY SUCCEED. Impeach him for the Friday Night massacre. Impeach him for circumventing the 14th Amendment. He just ramped up the migrant arrest quota to 1500 a day and started raids in Chicago yesterday: Impeach him for violating the 4th Amendment. And if I hear one more piece of blowback to my PREVIOUS call to impeach him no matter the outcome, one more head-shake from a cowardly Democrat, and especially one more factually inaccurate claim that it doesn’t work, one more self-absorbed loser saying ‘Impeach? Yeah, sounds good. How did it work out for us last time? Pretty effing well, actually. The mere TALK of impeaching Trump helped the Democrats win the House in 2018 and break Trump tri-partite control of government. The FIRST impeachment was followed by keeping the house in 2020 and after the Georgia election, taking the senate in 2020, and oh by the way the White House in 2020. The SECOND impeachment crushed any lingering attempt by Trump to overthrow the Biden Government-In-Waiting in 2021 and provided the impetus for the January 6th prosecutions. In fact, since Nixon, every party that impeached or TRIED to impeach a president won the next elections. House, Senate, White House. Thirteen straight. IMPEACHMENT – EVEN FAILED IMPEACHMENT - IS UNDEFEATED. ALSO: The Media capitulation continues. Acosta's show cancelled by the latest CNN job who hasn't been able to keep a job since 2000. And how did appeasing Trump work out for you ABC, CBS, and NBC? Trump's FCC reinstated license challenges against your stations, Trump wants Maddow jailed, and at Disney: ESPN's Stephen A. Smith just made a Trumpist idiot out of himself. B-Block (35:12) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Trump has too many Bennies to keep them all straight: can't remember the Chairman of the January 6th Committee he wants to jail. Even the NFL is sucking up to Elon "It Only LOOKED Like A Nazi Salute" Trump. And the first baseball player since like 1877 to get the mouth sores and skin rashes of Hand, Foot and Mouth disease just endorsed Robert F. Kennedy Jr. C-Block (46:25) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: You know what it's like in this country right now? It's like we all just woke up from the anesthesia in the MIDDLE of a medical procedure. You know how I know this? Because I'm one of those people who actually DID wake up in the middle of a medical procedure - and I'm having the same procedure TOMORROW.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Nixon and Watergate
Joe Lieberman, An Extraordinary Man (Special Edition)

Nixon and Watergate

Senator Joe Lieberman, a Democrat from Connecticut, died unexpectedly in April from complication from a fall. He was 82 years old and his loss from the scene will be incalculable. For Joe Lieberman was one of those rare public figures who was not just respected, but beloved, by both sides of the aisle. He was unafraid to take on controversial issues, and he could disagree without being disagreeable and, most importantly, he was committed to bipartisan leadership. He could reach across the aisle, find common ground, and work to find a real, workable, solution. Like a good chunk of the American public, Lieberman was fed up with the current breakdowns in our political system so he went out and helped form a solution, the "No Labels" organization. The organization actually predates the rise of both former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden. It foresaw our problems in their earliest stages. That vision was in large part due to the contributions of Joe Lieberman. Lieberman is unique in that position. He was once the Vice Presidential nominee of his own Democratic Party, speaking at their Convention in a prime slot,  and then just 8 years later, a keynote speaker at the opposing party's Republican National Convention. To my knowledge, only Former Georgia Governor Zell Miller has ever pulled that feat off (though Miller was not a Vice Presidential nominee) and spoke at both political parties conventions.  Lieberman was that committed to standing up for what he thought was right. He did it during the Clinton Impeachment, standing with President Bush 1 and 2 during their Wars in the Middle East, he stood up for Israel including recently in the current war situation facing the country.  the fact was Senator Lieberman was so independent that he was eventually defeated in his own party's Senatorial Primary but he then filed as an independent and won his seat for yet another term. While he caucused with the Democrats, he would serve as one of the chambers two independent Senators. That was just one of the signs of his independent streak, and the other major one, was his long friendship with Republican Senators, John McCain and Lindsey Graham.  They were known as the Three Amigos, and they worked tirelessly strengthening our national defense and working to find solutions to issues ranging from Immigration to Judiciary Reform. In all it was an extraordinary life and career, for the first Jewish American nominated to a national ticket from either party, and Lieberman not only set a shining example of how to lead and be bipartisan in doing it, but he did it all as an observant Jew, who was proud of his Judaism, and followed it strictly, so strictly, in fact, that often the Senate calendar was accommodating to his religious schedule.  We hope in this episode we project to you our admiration for a man who set such a good example of what a true leader should be.  We did not always agree with him politically, but  Joe Lieberman will be missed and missed at a moment when the country needs more leaders like him to set the example for us all.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

SEASON 2 EPISODE 33: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:43) SPECIAL COMMENT:  The impeachment inquiry Kevin McCarthy has now unilaterally and personally declared against President Joe Biden is, in fact, illegal. The Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel – The TRUMP Administration Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel – ruled, on January 19th, 2020, that there can be no impeachment and no impeachment inquiry without… a vote. And that ruling is still on the books. Today. And Kevin McCarthy has violated it. Kevin McCarthy has broken the law. It's Kevin McCarthy's ILLEGAL IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY.  Steven A. Engel, Assistant Attorney General Office of Legal Counsel. Same guy who wrote Bill Barr's Muller summary for him, wrote: “The house of representatives must expressly authorize a committee to conduct an impeachment investigation and to use compulsory process IN that investigation before the committee may compel the production of documents of testimony in support of the House's power of impeachment…the House itself must authorize an impeachment inquiry… no committee may undertake the momentous move from legislative oversight to impeachment without a delegation BY THE FULL HOUSE of such authority." Kevin McCarthy also wrote in 2019 that an impeachment inquiry without a vote is invalid. And he said it again TWELVE DAYS AGO. So any Democrat responding to this latest Republican urination on the constitution on behalf of Dementia J. Trump by NOT calling this a quote “ILLEGAL IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY” should be expelled. From the party, from office, from the country. McCarthy didn't just break the rules, he just broke Trump rules and that fact should be hung around his neck every morning like one of those floral leis you get when you arrive in Hawaii. “Hello Mr. Speaker? And how's your illegal impeachment inquiry TODAY?” And then there's the history lesson McCarthy needs to know about the last Speaker to try to make an impeachment out of nothing. Newt Gingrich impeached Bill Clinton - and lost HIS job while Clinton kept his. And then Gingrich's successor lost his job before even officially starting it. And then HIS successor wound up in prison for child rape. As an aside: Rudy Giuliani is complaining about betrayals of the real meaning of 9/11 this year: who gets to speak first at the memorial. B-Block (26:29) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: All this Rudy and Clinton and Gingrich talk got me nostalgic for a quarter century ago, when in my third month in the news business I went - in one week - from “why haven't I seen you on SportsCenter lately" to “Good Evening, I'm anchoring live coverage of the State of the Union Address.” How to succeed in political broadcasting without really trying! EPISODE 109: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: We're really doing "But Hillary's Emails" again, huh, CNN? Huh, NBC? Huh, CBS? Huh, New York Times? Huh, Washington Post? THE HELL WE ARE. CBS's website broke the story accurately ("Documents MARKED classified...found at Biden's think tank") and then Norah O'Donnell dropped the caveats and mitigations and tarted the story up. The Post bothsidesed and whataboutismed the Biden story, invoking Trump in the subhead. The Times comped Trump in Paragraph 5. And worst of all, an hour after CNN broke a genuinely important story: Special Counsel Jack Smith subpoenaing Rudy Giuliani in the Trump Post-Election "Save America PAC" Fundraising crimes, what did Anderson Cooper lead with? His network's own, important, resonating scoop? Nope. The Paste Eaters of CNN buried their own scoop - six nights before their Giuliani Documentary Series starts, too! - so television's longest-running failed marketing experience Anderson Cooper could alter the facts and mislead the nation by saying "Turns out the former president is not the only one with a classified documents problem. The CURRENT president has one as well." Sure, Coop. If a Swiss Army knife is the same as Jack The Ripper's Murder Weapon. Fire. Them. All. B-Block (20:02) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL PART 1: That "bronchial thing" turned out to be a sinus infection, but happily in September I brought you the career story that fits perfectly this descent into "But Her Emails 2". I would've just re-read it anyway: It was June 5, 1998, when I tried to quit as the anchor of MSNBC's top Clinton-Lewinsky-Starr show and two NBC News executives asked me to see an NBC official as part of a process to leave the network - except she turned out to be their leg-breaker and told me NBC versus me would be "David and Goliath" and NBC would crush me. C BLOCK (33:35) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL PART 2: But it was even worse: she promised that if I quit, NBC would put my parents "out on the street." That's how closely Ken Starr forged the link between his live made-for-tv political reality show and the profits at all the networks.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After the break they talk about the characters surrounding Monica Lewinsky, and whether the show treats them fairly.  In Slate Plus's “Is This Feminist” segment, Alicia and Cheyna talk about whether the ongoing Britney Spears saga is feminist.  Recommendations: Alicia: Diving headfirst into Fall.  Cheyna: Lindy West's new Substack Butt News.    Podcast production by Cheyna Roth with editorial oversight by Susan Matthews and June Thomas.  Send your comments and recommendations on what to cover to thewaves@slate.com Learn more about your ad choices. Warning: Explicit Conversations About Politics, Culture, & Sexuality 9/11: A date almost everyone knows, yet it's still shrouded in mystery, like it was a dream, a myth or a movie. It sure looked like a movie, something no one had ever seen before... and hasn't since. The appalling spectacle of passenger planes flying into the World Trade Centers crumbling to dust live and on repeat—one fiery, phantasmagorical special effect after another—from every different angle, felt totally surreal. Unfortunately, it was real. It was also very deadly. At least 2997 human beings lost their lives that dreadful day, and thousands more were poisoned by the fumes. And it was traumatic. Certainly, the harrowing experience is seared into the psyches of the actual survivors who somehow escaped the Nightmare on Fulton Street. But you didn't have to have been there to be traumatized. Millions of us were shocked senseless, and we still exhibit symptoms of 9/11 PTSD: chronic fear, anxiety, despair, delusion, confusion, anger and terror, and even a kind of sexual trauma, a peculiar feeling of impotency, pain and rage from having witnessed America's biggest phallic buildings—Dick 1 & Dick 2—virtually castrated by box-cutters and blowback. Have we healed from the wounds of 9/11? Not really; how can we? Though it was the Crime of the Century, 9/11 is one of America's greatest (mostly) unsolved mysteries, partly because “Da Rich” cover their crimes. So, on this special, almost sacred 20th anniversary, when most mainstream media is just feeding us the usual hogwash, F.D.R. explores the truth of 9/11, such that we know. We're not “Truthers" - it wasn't an "inside job," though it turned into a con job... And we have questions: Why did it happen? Why was the Bush administration so ill-prepared (despite warnings), and yet so ready to wage wars in response to 9/11 against peoples that had nothing to do with 9/11? With 15 out of 19 hijackers Saudi, plus Osama bin Laden (plus more), why is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia one of the only Middle Eastern countries America hasn't attacked? Why haven't we solved or tried the terrible crime of 9/11 instead of just waging perma-wars with drones and bombs? Bombing never helps anyone but the bomb-makers.  Unfortunately, the bomb-makers are in charge…  We are asking obvious questions, and yet they are so taboo that Reddit censored this show, shutting it down twice as we broadcast live. But we have other platforms and we will not be intimidated, so the F.D.R. Love Train rolls on down the tracks of truth. We also talk about the generally lousy effect that 9/11 (especially coming right after the Clinton Impeachment) had on good consenting adult sexuality. Sex took a beating, while beating became “sexy,” and torture in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo went off the charts. On the one hand, our APA-sanctioned “enhanced interrogations” destroyed innocent people, and on the other, now we can't even try the self-confessed 9/11 mastermind, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, because we tortured him too much for his confessions to be admissible. Of course, 9/11-inspired sex doesn't HAVE to be bad... for instance, when I fly through the air and make Max's tower explode. Wheeeee!  Put on your headphones to listen to the show and celebrate Self-Love September! Make Self-Love (or any kind of love), Not War. It's the Bonobo Way.  And don't miss our fabulous star-studded throwback, 9/11 Anniversary Eve Bonoboville Bacchanal, from exactly five years ago (when we also went to the Emmys which we missed this year due to Covid-fears), on the 15th anniversary of the greatest American Crime Story never (fully) told. While most people's attention this week was understandably focused on the impeachment of President Donald Trump, this past Thursday marked the anniversary of another historic political battle. On December 19th, 1998, President Bill Clinton became only the second U.S. President to be impeached by the House of Representatives. On The Fox News Rundown, we took a look back at that time and examined how that partisan fight 21 years ago compared to the one we're witnessing today. Host Dave Anthony spoke with both Former Republican Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott and Former New Jersey Democratic Sen. Robert Torricelli who both took part in the Senate trial that followed Clinton's impeachment. They both shared their perspective on what was occurring behind closed doors and the responsibility they felt at the time. Because of time, we could not include our full conversations with both Senators Lott and Torricelli, who both had very unique points of view on both the events of 1998 and today. On The Fox News Rundown Extra you'll our complete interviews with both former lawmakers. Besides additional stories from 21 years ago, both men offer advice to the Republican and Democrat Senators who will soon have to determine the fate of Donald Trump and his presidency.
