Dawn and Sarah join Matt to review four new shows and break down their thoughts on the latest episodes of The Traitors. First, after a 3-year absence, Severance is finally back on Apple TV+ Easily one of the most anticipated shows of the year, the trio get lost in the immersive world of Lumon Industries while Sarah turns to Reddit to explore what the 'clever' fans are talking about. Next, also on Apple, there's preposterous 'Maths thriller Prime Target. On ITV Martin Clunes stars in new drama Out There about a rural farmer caught up in County Lines created by the same team who worked with Clunes on the true-life crime drama Manhunt. Finally, on Netflix, there's American Primeval, a gritty, brutal and violent of the 1800's with another stunning performance from the always brilliant Betty Gilpin as a woman trying to find save passage through America. It takes the trio by pleasant surprise. There's also discussion on The Breakthrough from Netflix

Episode 2: Getting in the Swing. The only way is up (we hope) after Lesbian Vampire Killers. Next on our agenda was to take a closer look at the Martin Clunes 1994 vehicle Staggered. A film that at the time seemed ubiquitous because of an aggressive marketing campaign, but not one that's widely remembered in 2023. In fact not even by Guy and Rob it would seem. Both huge Men Behaving Badly fans, one had seen Staggered but couldn't remember it, while the other couldn't remember if he had seen it. Keeping up? It's fair to say that Staggered wouldn't have received the exposure it did at the time without the burgeoning TV stardom of Martin Clunes on Men Behaving Badly and after losing the services on Comic Strip Presents director Sandy Johnson, Clunes was given the task of directing Staggered himself. Tune in to find out whether that was a good idea or not. Amongst other things, we get stuck into Men Behaving Badly, Robin of Sherwood, Babes in the Wood, Boobs in the Wood and the unforgettable Warren. See where Staggered rates in our master list of two and who can gain the upper hand (sadly a sitcom that never made the big screen) in the BritCom Goes to the Movies Quiz. THE Clunes Senior Citizens Centre in Fraser Street had been central to the needs of its older residents since the early 1970s. Sadly 2020 and the restrictions on social gatherings brought about the dissolution of the centre and a 50-year chapter of community history came to a close. The building, with its range of meeting rooms suitable for a whole range of intellectual, physical and artistic pursuits lay empty and silent. But the void left by the closure was not to remain that way for very long especially since more than 23 per cent of the town's population are 60 years or older. Members of this community soon approached the Hepburn Shire Council arguing that there was still an ongoing need for this valuable social resource to be maintained and used. And out of this need came Attitude - Ageing Well in Clunes.

The site of the old Port Phillip Mine in Clunes is nothing but an intriguing pile of dirt and gorse these days. But while every scrap of plant and infrastructure has been long obliterated, the remains still dominate the heart of the town. The leaseholders of the site were the Port Phillip and Colonial Gold Mining Company established in 1851. Towards the end of 1856, its representatives visited Clunes to inspect the quartz outcropping in Creswick Creek. They liked what they saw and formed the Clunes Mining Company under their management that became the first and largest company to exploit the local reefs. Eventually the Port Phillip Company took over work at the site and remained in operation until 1894. They produced over 500,000 ounces of gold in that time. But this is not a tale about gold hard won but the activities of one man whose reticent shadow still hovers over Clunes in the form of numerous beloved public buildings. His name was Rivett Henry Bland. Little is known about him today. He left no children and there is little historical material out there that speaks in his voice.

Most people are aware of Clunes' gold mining history. It was home to Victoria's first registered discovery, made by one William Campbell in 1850. Up to the 1890s, gold powered the town's growth and gave it many fine buildings which survive relatively intact from ornate public halls to austere worker cottages. But when mining eventually came to an end, Clunes, like many resource boom towns, started to wither. By the 1930s the population had drastically declined and the place was practically a ghost town. Those who remained had to find jobs in the factories of Ballarat, as agricultural workers or they went hungry. One of the families who remained were the Jones family. They were descended from William Jones, a native of north Wales who came to work the mines in the 1860s. While the elder Jones left Clunes for richer pickings in Western Australia, many of his children and grandchildren remained in what became a quiet backwater. One of those descendants was Lloyd Jones, born 1933, who produced a book in 1989 about his childhood years, Just a Boy From the Bush. It is a highly detailed account of life growing up during the depression years in Clunes and regional Victoria and a window into another world.

This Must Be The Place In this episode of “This Must Be The Place” David and Elizabeth visit the small Goldfields town of Clunes for the annual Clunes Booktown Festival. As you may pick up from the introduction, Elizabeth was slightly confused about the distinction between “Booktown” and “Booktown Festival”. Whereas (she realised later) “Clunes is a Booktown all year round”, the weekend Festival in May is in addition to this appellation and sees the town taken over by book stalls, author talks, and book-related seminars. The festival attracts around 18,000 visitors to Clunes – a town of largely intact Goldfields-era heritage you may recognise from such films as Mad Max and Ned Kelly – as in “Mad Max”, and “Ned Kelly”, although “Mad Max and Ned Kelly” might have a certain appeal in the style of “Alien vs Predator”. The Booktown/Festival can be characterized as a revival effort for the town. Other big changes in Clunes over the past decade or so have been the return of the passenger train service, and the arrival of the Wesley College Clunes campus. Amongst the features at this year’s festival, David was invited to speak on his book “Dig: Australian Rock and Pop Music, 1960-85”. The episode features David’s author interview, undertaken on a chilly outdoor stage with Professor Keir Reeves of the Collaborative Research Centre in Australian History at Federation University.
