Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 3-06-2025: Dr. Dawn addresses an email about coronary artery blockage, explaining that a 70% calcified plaque in the LAD vessel might be better managed with medication than stenting, and recommending statin therapy to prevent further plaque formation. A live caller with a history of staph aureus infection describes unusual fingernail changes and fungal infection following prolonged antibiotic treatment, with Dr. Dawn suggesting an in-person examination for proper diagnosis. The show highlights the remarkable story of James Harrison, an Australian blood donor whose special anti-D antibodies saved 2.4 million babies from hemolytic disease, donating blood 1,173 times over his lifetime. Dr. Dawn provides practical advice for reducing microplastic consumption, recommending glass containers over plastic, avoiding bottled water, and warning about unexpected sources like Himalayan salt, scented wax melts, and plastic tea bags. She evaluates cold water plunge therapy for weight loss, citing research showing only temporary benefits for inflammation reduction and stress relief, but potential dangers for people with heart conditions. The show addresses concerning developments with bird flu (H5N1), highlighting the discovery of the virus in rats and questioning why rapid testing kits aren't being developed and distributed proactively. Dr. Dawn criticizes FDA food safety regulation, particularly the "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) pathway that allows manufacturers to self-determine ingredient safety without proper vetting. She discusses fascinating research on the NOVA1 gene, which changed dramatically 250,000-500,000 years ago and appears linked to complex vocalizations and potentially human language development. The show recommends "solo freedom dancing" as an effective exercise option, while warning that noise-canceling headphones may impair the brain's ability to process complex sounds, leading to auditory processing disorders. Dr. Dawn explores a breakthrough in synthetic microbiome therapy that shows promise in combating C. difficile infections by identifying specific bacterial strains that suppress the harmful bacteria. She shares news about a promising oral norovirus vaccine tablet that's shown effectiveness in clinical trials for both younger and older adults, potentially addressing a disease that causes 70,000 hospitalizations annually. The show concludes with clarification about vitamin A and measles, noting that while it can help prevent complications in malnourished children, it doesn't prevent infection and can be dangerous at high doses, especially for pregnant women.

In this episode of The Healers Café, Manon Bolliger, FCAH, RBHT (facilitator and retired naturopath with 30+ years of practice) chats with Dr. Tom Ingegno about his clinics use of cold-water therapy and cupping to treat a multitude of conditions. For the transcript and full story go to: https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/dr-tom-ingegno Highlights from today's episode include: Dr. Tom Ingegno 11:37 It's the idea that we invest in staying healthy, right. You know, some people get it, right. I don't eat this, or I, you know, this is my diet, or I go to the gym regularly, but they're still missing pieces Dr. Tom Ingegno 20:13 the idea is we're treating the body almost like we're creating an artificial pump, right? How strong can we get everything to constrict and then dilate and constrict, again, to kind of pump in and out fresh blood and stagnant blood for that. Dr. Tom Ingegno cupping is creating a vacuum and sucking the skin up into that vacuum. And what we see happening is we create a space between the skin the fascia, the fascia, and the muscle, and any stagnation, any lactic acid buildup, any metabolic waste that's in that tissue gets drawn into this space that's created and our body has a better time cleaning that up. ABOUT DR TOM INGEGNO: Dr. Tom Ingegno, DACM has over 22 years of experience in the integrative and functional medicine space. He owns and operates Charm City Integrative Health, a multifaceted clinic that NYT bestseller and futurist David Houle called, the Future of Medicine. Tom has taught at two prestigious schools for East Asian Medicine and helped expand the scope for the practice of acupuncture with his role as chairman of the Maryland State Board of Acupuncture. He served as director of a chain of wellness centers in the mid-Atlantic developing treatment protocols and managing practitioners. Dr. Tom has been featured in both consumer and professional media, spreading his message of health using modern research, traditional practices, and humor to make complex theories and treatments understandable. His second book, The Cupping Book: Unlocking the Secrets of Ancient Healing, will be available this January. Core purpose/passion: I‘m passionate about maintaining traditional medical practices that adhere to modern-day research and lifestyle. Hello, and welcome back to "Retirement Rebel." This is your host, Siobhan Daniels, ready to dive into a truly inspiring episode. Now, usually, our introductions set the scene for what's to come, and today's no different. We've covered three pivotal topics that inform our conversation and, without a doubt, will resonate with many.Firstly, we broached the subject of physical and emotional rejuvenation through an activity as challenging yet reinvigorating as cold water swimming. Sara Barnes eloquently shares her voyage of discovery, having turned to the icy embrace of open waters after a surgery that tested her both physically and mentally. It's remarkable how embracing the chill of nature has not just been a path to recovery for Sara but a route to finding a community, a sense of self, and an enduring strength that defies expectations. The second key subject is the power of a supportive community. It's a recurring theme that I hold dear on this podcast. Sara's story underscores the importance of women lifting each other up—especially us women who are navigating midlife and beyond. The fact that Sara's book, "Cold Fix," is selling like hotcakes indicates that the message of unity and shared strength, particularly among those who might feel left out by society, is getting through.Lastly, we touch upon the idea of rewriting the script for our lives as we age. Whether it's overcoming ingrained fears or embarking on new adventures, we discuss how essential it is to trample those self-limiting beliefs and embrace a 'what's the worst that can happen' attitude. Sara embodies this rebellious spirit, not just in her day-to-day life but also through the empowering words she commits to the page. We both advocate for an outlook on ageing that is positive, proactive, and unapologetically spirited. These subjects aren't just idle chatter. They're profound insights offering a lens into the way we, as a community of rebels, approach the autumn of our lives—not as a time to wind down, but as a new chapter to embark upon with a gung ho spirit and a warrior's heart. Let's carry these themes throughout our conversation today and see where they lead us. Let's continue to challenge ageism together, embracing every splash of cold water and every twist in our path as we share this rebel life.Don't forget to follow or subscribe to the podcast for FREE on your podcast app of choice, or play it directly from the website: www.retirementrebel.co.ukKey Points:04:02 Sportive cycling events across rugged terrain, challenging fun.09:23 Underestimated surgery recovery, needed help from family.13:13 Understanding and overcoming feelings of darkness.14:30 Kids organised a crucial, uplifting recovery picnic.18:22 Discovering Instagram, global connections, and self-discovery.22:07 Women's podcast promotes self-discovery and inspiration.24:18 Agreement, action, and support for women's empowerment.28:02 Middle-aged characters rediscover self-love through swimming.33:13 Embracing ageing positively and sharing vibrant adventures.33:56 Advice: Address physical limitations for active years.39:44 Early rebel sneaks into backyard bathtub. On the previous episode of the Hormone Balance Solution podcast we looked at some studies on Cold Water Therapy and today we will continue delving into this research by looking closer at how it affects our mitochondrial health. (Episode 66) Here's what we've found and discuss on this episode: 1. The effects of cold water immersion are mainly due to the increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system. 2. Cold exposure can increase the activity and volume of brown fat, which can potentially aid in preventing obesity and metabolic diseases. 3. Cold water immersion after exercise can support muscle recovery, reduce soreness, and improve perceived recovery. 4. Cold exposure shows promise in improving lipid metabolism and clearing circulating metabolites. 5. While more research is needed, cold exposure might be a fantastic strategy for improving metabolic flexibility. **While there are promising studies indicating the benefits of cold water therapy, more research is needed due to the small sample sizes and variable study designs. It's important to approach this practice with caution and always consult with a healthcare professional.** Mentioned in this episode: Herbatonin – Save 15% when you use Tara's code: Tara15 Pique Tea – These are some of Tara's favourite teas! There are a lot of health claims out there about cold water immersion - I'm sure you've seen them; it seems like everyone is talking about it lately. And whenever I see this kind of trend come up, it peaks my curiosity to uncover the truth behind the claims - so I've attempted to do just that. I tasked my team researcher with finding as many studies on cold water immersion/ therapy as possible and that is what I will be discussing on this 2-part series on Cold Water Therapy. Here's what we've found and discuss on this episode: 1. Cold water immersion, when done correctly and under controlled conditions, may have several potential health benefits. Research suggests that it can increase brown adipose tissue and resting energy expenditure, potentially aiding in weight management. 2. Gain insight into how exercise and physical activity may influence the benefits of cold water immersion. 3. Learn how cold water immersion and the cold face test can stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing acute stress responses. 4. Uncover the potential effects of cold water therapy on insulin resistance, insulin sensitivity, and cardiovascular health. 5. Winter swimming has been associated with improved mood, decreased fatigue, pain relief, and decreased tension. This suggests that cold water immersion may provide mental and emotional benefits, in addition to potential physical benefits. **While there are promising studies indicating the benefits of cold water therapy, more research is needed due to the small sample sizes and variable study designs. After sharing last week of my challenging month, I wanted to take a minute to also discuss how I dealt with everything that life was throwing at me at the time. In hindsight I can see that it was more about my mindset and my nervous system than anything else. This week on the podcast I really wanted to speak to the importance of slowing down and letting go and truly taking some time to pour into one's own mindset and nervous system restoration. Here are some ways that I focused on my mindset and nervous system. 1. In those rough times when it was all too easy to keep spinning, I found that reconnecting with my spirituality had a profound impact on my mindset on multiple levels. 2. I slowed down in order to speed up my healing. Slowing down, taking things off my plate, allowed me to focus on the things that are important, the things that really matter. 3. It's truly a blessing to have beautiful, supportive, and healing friendships and to recognize the value of cultivating such relationships. I try to remember that while acknowledging our own personal achievements, it's also really important to be open to receive support from others around us. After all, success is a team effort! 4. Prioritizing self-care, forgiveness, and surrendering and letting go of negative emotions and old stories are key to overcoming challenges and moving towards healing and success. When you love yourself, I think you can love others better. COMING UP NEXT WEEK: If you're interested in diving deeper into the healing modalities discussed today, make sure to check out the next episode of The Hormone Balance Solution podcast called Healing Beyond the Physical with Alison Gallagher. It promises to be an enlightening conversation that you won't want to miss.

IN THIS EPISODE OF THE HUMAN UPGRADE™…Susanna Soeberg, Ph.D., a Danish researcher, international scientist and expert in cold and heat therapy for health and performance, explains how you can harness the massive benefits of cold water immersion (winter swimming), sauna, breathing, and your metabolism. When it comes to biohacking, a few things rise to the top and make a pretty big difference in your body and brain. Through her research, Susanna discovered the minimum threshold of cold and heat exposure for health benefits. We get right into that on the show. She also works with functional breathing during cold environmental conditions and cold water immersion, especially winter swimming. Have you been considering this biohack for awhile? Baby steps won't get you there—prepare to go all-in with the cold. “You could take cold showers, for sure,” Susanna says, “but it's not going to activate your parasympathetic nervous system in the same way as submerging yourself into cold water.”Earning a Ph.D. in metabolism at the University of Copenhagen set her on course to focus her expertise on ways metabolism works for and against you—and what you can do to improve your metabolic profile. She researches obesity, Type 2 diabetes and insulin management, as well as how brown and white adipose tissue (fat) function differently within the human body.In Susanna's new book, “Winter Swimming: The Nordic Way Towards a Healthier and Happier Life,” she describes the benefits of winter swimming and cold water immersion on your physiology, mental health, and capacity for resilience.Watch this episode on YouTube!SPECIAL OFFER FOR THE HUMAN UPGRADE LISTENERS: Go to https://www.soeberginstitute.com and use code DAVE for a special discount on Susanna Soeberg's 3-week course, The Thermalist CureTM.Opportunity: Breath, Cold, Stress & Resilience Conference, Feb. 18, 2023.
