As the world's population ages, more and more of us are affected by diseases, truly horrible diseases, like Alzheimer's. The latest studies show that 1/3 of seniors will have some level of dementia by the time they pass away. That's staggering. Alzheimer's now afflicts more Americans than breast and prostate cancers combined. Seven million people living in this country have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, plus 11 million more are caregivers for these patients. There's not much that's tougher than watching a loved one's mental faculties decline to the point that they are almost-unrecognizable. In this episode, I chat with Brian Tatum of the Alzheimer's Association, which is doing amazing things in funding research into Alzheimer's causes and treatment, as well as providing critical support for caregivers, for whom tending to a loved one's decline can be another full-time job. The Association also hosts the Ride 2 End ALZ, an opportunity for anyone to hop on their bike to help raise money to aid them to fund more research and support services like a 24/7 hotline that is staffed by Master's-level experts. The ride is a super cool and supportive event, as described in this episode also by Steve Mollen, who I randomly met at a Colfax Marathon committee meeting where we'd initially connected talking about New York sports. Steve enthusiastically describes the community created at this ride, one of six in the country, by the Alzheimer's Association. He has participated in the ride in Fort Collins, Colo., which has distances ranging from 23 to 75 miles and this year will be on June 8. It's a very significant event that is geared for anyone to do, or you can ride virtually and/or support riders like Steve by donating on their fundraising pages. It's very likely you and a loved one have been impacted by Alzheimer's, so please consider getting involved with the Ride 2 End ALZ and fighting this terrible disease. You might remember early last spring, an athlete who I coach, Julia Beckley, had her racing wheelchair stolen from her garage. We put out the word to every local media outlet we could, yet unfortunately it never turned up. However, the good news is that a GoFundMe that was setup raised enough funds for Julia to order a new chair and fly to Atlanta twice to get fitted for it and then have it fine-tuned. It should arrive just in time for a project that will begin on Oct. 26 that will highlight the needs of other adaptive athletes. Thanks in part to Julia's efforts, races have added or enhanced their pushrim divisions, including the Colfax Marathon and the Bolder Boulder, and more racing chairs are available to other adaptive athletes in Colorado. During her project, which she calls the Beckley Marathons, an intention pun on the infamous Barkley Marathons, she will wheel herself through a marathon on consecutive days in various corners of Colorado, beginning in Fort Collins, hitting southern Colorado, the Western Slope, and ending in Washington Park in Denver. She figures she will be pushing herself for 96 hours. She will be posting details on her Instagram account, @artisaurous  I'm looking forward to following Julia's progress while she balances the challenges of her complex health issues and pushing herself through these daily efforts.Julia BeckleyInstagram @artisaurousBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

It's Tuesday and we're talking about the big stories around Denver this week, especially what's happening with Denver Public Schools. On Wednesday, a high school student was forcibly removed from the House gallery in the Capitol, which comes on the heels of the protests and concerns about gun violence in schools in light of the recent shootings. Meanwhile, more drama for the DPS school board: Former Tattered Cover CEO and mayoral candidate Kwame Spearman announced a possible November bid for the at-large seat on the board — a seat that's currently held by Auon'tai Anderson, who is himself potentially facing another censure. Farther afield, mountain pie slinger Beau Jo's in Idaho Springs turns 50 and will be transitioning to an employee ownership model. Host Bree Davies and producer Erin O'Toole are here to break all of this down, plus talk about the latest Casa Bonita news, including this trip down memory lane.  Check out the Denver Post article we mentioned, which dives into the expulsion rates at DPS and how that fits into the school safety conversation. Listen to our interview with Melanie Asmar last year, where she walked us through the school board drama. Hello Runners! Wowza! It has been a hot, hot summer thus far! It can undoubtedly be challenging to run in training and races. Are you an intelligent runner, staying hydrated and not overheating? I hope so! August is upon us and the fall race season is just around the corner. Where did the summer go? It is flying by so fast. Not fair! My guest in this episode is Julia Beckley from here in Denver. Julia is an AWD adaptive athlete that is making quite a difference. What is AWD, you ask? Athletes with Disabilities. See, Julia is a push-rim athlete who pushes herself to the limit. Unfortunately, however, she has several medical conditions. One is hypophosphatasia, a rare condition that keeps bones and teeth from developing the right way, making them more likely to form incorrectly or break. Since she was eight years old, she has broken close to 45 bones. An athlete from childhood, she has competed in races from a 5K to a 100-mile ultra. And she is making a difference being an advocate to bring push-rim wheelchair inclusion to more Colorado races. Julia is also the Director of the AWD side of the Human Race in Ft. Collins, Colorado, to be held on Saturday, August 5th. Julia is a rock star, and her incredible story will inspire you. Also joining are Eddie Perez and Josh Gomez, who were on her support crew for this year's Colfax Marathon. We recorded this conversation at Runners Roost on Colorado Blvd. in Denver. In my intro, I also talk about the nasty pre-race jitters! Enjoy this episode! And if Julia's story inspires you, please send me a note to let me know your thoughts at jim@feelgoodrunning.com. This works for new and experienced athletes. Newer athletes may find this a bit demanding, but it will help you get faster, faster. Testing regularly is particularly helpful for athletes who have some experience and find themselves plateauing in their performance.   Here's how the cycle works. Take bike power for example. You want to take a baseline FTP test to determine your  Functional Threshold Power. FTP is theoretically the power in Watts you can average for 45-60 minutes. This FTP becomes an anchor point for determining your training zones. Having accurately determined training zones is important for making sure you do prescribed training in the right zones.   For example, if you want to increase your threshold power you need to train at that Z4 Threshold zone to train your body to process muscle lactate efficiently. The more time you spend in that zone, the more adaptation you get. Without the FTP number or accurate substitute, you may be training in the wrong zone (eg Z3 or Z5), neither of which create the same adaptation of teaching your body to improve lactate processing and increasing your capacity to do work. Training regularly and progressively overloading the correct training zones over the course of 3 weeks on the 4th week you retest. If things are working, the next FTP test is at a higher average power than the one 4 weeks earlier. You then adjust the training zones. In this case increasing the power ranges for each zone. Another 3 weeks of training at the new (accurate) zones causes another adaptation, another test, another increase, another adjustment to training zones, etc.   Swim: Perform a 400 time trial effort from a push (not dive). Recover for 10 to 15 minutes with easy swimming and rest. Perform a 200 time trial effort from a push. Looking to calculate CSS or CV as Meters or Yards Per Minute. The higher the number the faster your are. If you go real fast on the 200 and real slow on the 400 - that counts against you. Your 200 should be about 6% faster than the 400.   Bike Power on a trainer is best 20 or 45 minute Or 15 miles without power   Run: 5k Time Trial as if racing Do on a track or flat course Always repeat on the same track or course if possible   How to execute a perfectly paced test. Consider how big of an improvement over the last two tests in that discipline. Consider how well the athlete is training at Z4 and Z5. Start with the average pace or power from the previous test and set a reasonable increase as the target pace or power. Execute at that power or pace start to finish. Don't start faster.   Excerpt from Swim Test Pacing: For the 200 target 58 seconds per lap which will put you close to 1:56/100 pace or 3:51 200. For the 400 target 59 seconds per lap for the first 4 and 60 seconds per lap for the last 4. If you feel you have some gas increase the stroke rate on the last lap.   If you want to talk further about how to test regularly to get better results, reach out at Rich@303colorado.com or message @tripodcasterrich   Check out the TriDot Free Trial https://app.tridot.com/onboard/sign-up/richsoares   Endurance News:   Ironman World Championships St. George results Utah Sports Commission Expected To Create Total Economic Impact Of More Than $35m Dollars   PTO Pro Am, to be held this Sunday 15 May at the Herbalife24 Triathlon Los Angeles and streamed live for free around the world The event will see six of the world's top professional athletes race an Olympic-distance course alongside Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) athletes and special guests including former UFC star Paul Felder and Olympic silver medallist Heather Fell. First, I have a surprise discussion with mother and son https://feelgoodrunning.com/podcast-episodes/dr-karen-l-ostlund-a-true-feel-good-runner/ (Karen Ostlund) and https://feelgoodrunning.com/podcast-episodes/marathon-running-al-balmer-remembering-his-father-in-law-manny/ (Al Balmer), former guests on my podcast. They both completed the 2021 Boston Marathon Monday, and we had a brief discussion on their experience. We also explore three stories; one is tips for if you are either starting or need a motivational boost to get started. Another is for runners approaching or are already in their later years. Is it necessarily true that you will slow down due to age? Find out! And a story about runners, including myself, that have or are running a marathon in all 50 States. You will enjoy these stories! Congratulations to each of you that have run completed your fall race, and if you still have one in sight, good luck! We want to hear about your fall 2021 race experience. Just go to http://feelgoodrunning.com/myrace (feelgoodrunning.com/myrace). There are instructions and a link that you can record a little about your race experience. I'll put a group of them together in a future episode. Your experience in your own words will motivate other runners! Hello Runners, Running race events are back. Yes, and with a vengeance. Boston, New York, Chicago, Tokyo, London, and Colfax marathons are just to name a few coming back this fall. Some of these are predicting 25,000, 30,000, and more runners! Just a few months ago, we were still in the pandemic with no end in sight. That was quick! So how will this work with local governments and CDC guidelines? Well, all of these races are fluid and things can change rather quickly. That is why there are no solid plans in place as of yet. My guests in this episode are two highly respected individuals in the running community. Lonnie Somers, Co-Owner of https://halsports.net/ (Hal Sports) here in Denver. Lonnie either owns or manages several events not only in Denver but in Colorado and other states. Hal Sports is a full event company. Creigh Kelley has put on over 1,000 running events and is the race director for the https://www.runcolfax.org/ (Colfax Marathon) in Denver. Both Lonnie and Creigh are also racing day announcers. This is a fascinating conversation of where race events were, where they are today, and what they will look like as they evolve post-pandemic. You will go away with a better understanding, appreciation, and respect for Race Directors and running events. Lonnie and Michelle started the https://www.fetalhealthfoundation.org/ (Fetal Health Foundation.) Twin to Twin Transfusion System (TTTS) should have taken their lives. But the frantic search for information and resources, fetal surgery saved them. Today they are healthy identical twin girls. They created https://thegreatcandyrun.com/ (The Great Candy Run) and today https://halsports.net/ (Hal Sports) and dedication to running is their business and passion. Runners, it is getting hot out there as we transition into summer. Remember to take more fluids, run slower in the heat, and try to run earlier in the morning when it is cooler. Thank you for listening to the https://feelgoodrunning.com/ (Feel Good Running Podcast), and please share this with your running friends and on your social media platforms. I would very much appreciate it. Train hard, run harder, and be well. And remember to be kind to others, even if some are not kind to you. The BIG GUNS are doing a special bonus podcast, discussing how we manage the (unprecedented) disruption the coronavirus is bringing to the US. Coach MK lived in Hong Kong during SARS and lived to tell us about it; Dalia Kinsey will discuss quarantine nutrition; and Jummy Olawale will tell us how to stay calm when your whole family is at home and there's no toilet paper ANYWHERE. Special guest Allison Cao, an American nurse raising her family in Mainland China, will talk to us about quarantine hygiene.   We can't make things better, but with laughter, perspective and a little coaching&loving, we can LIGHTEN UP and get through this, together. #AskAway, we are HERE for your burning (quarantine) questions! Click HERE to try a free month of Fitness Protection and HERE to join our Quaran-Team! MK Intro: #AskAway is the catchy title for my Sunday night Q&A sessions for Fitness Protection Program clients. I had been wanting to start real conversations about Diet Culture to alleviate some of the anxiety many of us feel around family, fitness and food. Lighten UP! Became a thing after meeting The Big Guns at a conference and totally loving our chemistry. On Thursday, the world changed, and a whole lot of us are feeling all kinds of anxious right now, so it made sense to combine #AskAway and Lighten UP! Into one bonus podcast.   Most Americans haven’t lived through anything like this before. I have; in Hong Kong. It was called SARS, and to this day it’s the scariest coronavirus most epidemiologists have ever seen. This strain of the virus you’re hearing about today is different. It’s not the virus itself that’s scary, we aren’t quarantining to save ourselves, so the constant cries of “SELFISH!” can be downright paralyzing. With stakes so high amidst so many ethical decisions, it can be hard to think clearly, which is exactly why we need to Lighten UP! Right now.    To be perfectly clear: I'm taking all of this seriously. Markets are tanking, people are being furloughed, and for a whole lot of people this crisis is ripping the fabric of their security. Most of all...I realize that for many people, home is not a safe place, so an extended holiday is a living hell. If you need help, or are ready to work on your exit strategy, call 1-800-799-7233.    Vulnerable families are not a new thing, but the cracks in our society are going to be more evident, making it hard to remember that these systemic issues are too big for one person to solve alone much less with one action. You cannot afford to dwell in thoughts of hopelessness or shame. Privilege is something to be aware of, not ashamed of. It’s something to factor in when assessing other people. There is power in privilege, you have more than you think you do. Start where you are, do what you can, use what you have.    Most of the people watching and listening to us right now can work from home. We will still be able to pay our mortgages and take our goldfish to the vet. It is truly a first-world problem to have to stay indoors with little kids for a month, trying to adjust to being a homeschool teacher, WHILE holding onto hopes for a fall race and trying to get something resembling work done in a house with no toilet paper and no food delivery. We need to brace ourselves for a period that can, and likely will, strain our mental health. We gotta get in front of that and take care of ourselves so we can take care of the people around us.   I’m a run coach not a life coach, but I am here to run through this life, together with you. Let’s get ready for The Gun Show, I don’t know about you but I sure do need to Lighten UP! Right now.    It’s time for THE GUN SHOW!! Jummy Olawale is…...and Dalia Kinsey is …..Together, they are THE BIG GUNS   Welcome! Thank you so much for being here! How are you doing?   Tonight we are bringing in a THIRD, very special, gun. Allison is an American nurse who has called Hong Kong and Mainland China home for the past 3 years.    Hello, Allison! How are you doing? Pandemic Living: it's hard to describe how crowded Hong Kong is. You are never more than a foot away from another person. During SARS, we stayed indoors and wore masks outside. In Denver, even indoors I don't face crowds like that, the only people breathing that close to me are my kids. I'm not saying this isn't serious: it is. But I've not even briefly considered the need for a face mask. And I have one made by Louis Vuitton! Key here is to remember: this isn't nuclear fallout. You can, and should, get outside. Take walks, Have extra long morning and afternoon playtimes.    Dalia: I am something of a prepper, and have 100 cans of Spam in my basement. How long can I continue to order pizza? Jummy: Runners are typically planners, so uncertainty is hard on our mental health. How can we anchor ourselves during uncertain times? Allison: How many times per day do I need to make my kids bathe in Clorox? Dalia: How do we support vulnerable families in our community? I’m guessing we don't need to show up at the soup kitchen or food bank. Jummy: What is one exercise I can do to keep my brain from spiraling into depression and anxiety? Allison: It feels like every action we take is meaningless, like nothing we do will DO anything. Can you give us some perspective?   Client Q&A Hygiene My children and I will be home (I am in a high risk group) but my husbands company is continuing to require employees to be on site (he’s an R&D chemist and there isn’t much they can do from home). Should I have him shower/change clothes before he interacts with us or is simple hand washing enough?   Nutrition Will focusing on an anti-inflammatory diet help me keep from getting the virus? I work outside of the home and rarely cook lunch or anything more that quick breakfasts. My communities schools are closed for the foreseeable future. What suggestions do you have for easy breakfasts and lunches to make to keep both kids and adults well fed and happy. Should I start taking any supplements to help my body stay healthy? I heard turmeric and vitamin c might help, Is that true?   Mental Health There are so many changes and I’m not sure where to begin processing my next steps. I feel paralyzed how do I begin to move forward? I generally function best when my time is structured and my schedule is busy. I see a lot of unstructured down time on my hands as I prepare to be home with my children. How do I manage the unstructured time and increase in anxiety that it is prone to bringing.   Fitness Hi MK, I’m training for the Colfax Marathon and hitting those longer runs in the teens. Will these longer runs lower my immunity? Thank you for your thoughts. Hopefully, I can make the best decision about training. I’m following the 100-mile plan for 3 Days at the Fair. My son had major surgery last week, so I’ve missed most of the weekday runs and am not feeling rested enough for the weekend long runs. My plan is to take it easy, maybe go for a few walks, and pick up again on Monday. Does this sound good? Is there anything else I should keep in mind? Hi Coach! Not unexpectedly, my marathon scheduled for next Sunday was cancelled. I haven’t decided yet if I’m going to run my own 26.2 or if I just sleep in and try again another day (many months from now). If I do it, what are your race strategy recommendations? I know what you suggest for a half but not a full. My only goal truly is to finish. Thanks for your thoughts and for coaching and loving us all through the latest craziness that has become life. Alicia A bit irrational, I know, but pleeeease convince me I'm not going to lose a ton of fitness. Just tapered my for cancelled half, now I'm in a winter wonderland and I'm trying to set a good example and not go to the gym right now to use the treadmill. I'm trying to get some good strength sessions in daily. And being diligent about foam rolling!!!!

Hi Runners, Thank you for listening to my inaugural podcast of "Feel Good Running." This episode gives you a description of the podcast and what to expect in each episode.  This podcast is for the everyday runner. Those of us who go out and run for our own personal reasons. I hope to inspire, motivate and entertain you with the content and guests. I felt it was important that you get to know a little about me and that I a little bit of a running background. I've run 101 marathons, a 50 State plus DC certified marathon finisher, a RRCA certified running coach, the Co-Race Director of the Maui Marathon in Maui Hawaii and the Vice President of the Valley Isle Road Runners on Maui. My goal is to have a new episode each and every week. I know you have a choice of several excellent podcasts and hope you will subscribe to "Feel Good Running" and keep me on your playlist. And a nice review would be welcome! The following are some highlights from this first Episode! -Jim   Lindsey Hein (../wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Hein-Family-e1542508802305.jpg) Glen & Lindsey Hein and their 3 boys (and recently a 4th!) Lindsey Hein is the host of the popular running Podcast, I'll Have Another with Lindsey Hein (https://lindseyhein.com) . I was very honored and humbled that Lindsey was graciously willing to interview me on my inaugural Podcast. With an extensive running resume, in addition to her weekly podcast,  she is also a running coach, a public speaker and the mom to four boys. She has added her voice to the running community through her podcast; named as one of iTunes' "New and Noteworthy" podcasts. Lindsey has interviewed some of America's most influential and accomplished runners including Shalane Flanagan, Kathrine Switzer, Deena Kastor and the 2018 Boston Marathon women's winner, Des Linden. Lindsey's laid-back, conversational style has won her a loyal following. What started as a passion project, has turned into a career that she continues to develop and grow. An accomplished runner herself, Lindsey has completed 14 marathons with a personal record of 3:11, and a half Iron Man. She is married to Glenn her husband of 10 years who she often trains and races with. They now write personal training plans! You can find out more about Lindsey on her website  lindseyhein.com (http://lindseyhein.com/) .  And definitely subscribe to her weekly podcast. Thank you Lindsey! It was indeed a treat! I look forward to interviewing you on my podcast in  the near future!   Vince DiCroce When Lindsey Hein was interviewing me, she asked what my most memorable marathon was and I was not prepared for what happened. After thinking about it for a bit with so many memories over the years, it came to me that it was my 100th Marathon at The Colorado Marathon in Fort Collins, Colorado. As I crossed the finish line to the cheers of my running friends and spectators, Vince DiCroce was waiting for me. Vince was at the very end of his life, in the final stages of brain cancer that came back after several years in remission. Vince wanted to see me reach my goal of 100 Marathons. He passed away 3 weeks later. When I thought about it, this moment came immediately to my memory and I got choked up during as I was talking about that moment. It humbled me to the core and what was most important was not just completing my 100th marathon, it was that Vince found the energy to see me finish.  Vince was and still is an inspiration to many of us and I want to keep his memory alive, every chance I get. You can read Vince's blog, ...And So It Begins Again, which is a journal of when his cancer came back and his thoughts, feelings and journey until the end.  Here is a picture of Vince as he was running his last marathon at the Colfax Marathon in 2013 with all of his running friends including me. We all wore InVinceAble shirts. And the other picture is Vince greeting me at the finish line of...

Chewey Lam lives in Denver, Colorado and is a runner with type 1 diabetes as well as a number of other autoimmune conditions. He started running in 2016 and we talk about how he is heavily involved in the community, including being a Colfax Marathon ambassador, and an advocate for diabetes and migraine awareness. Chewey has run for or with a number of communities and groups such as Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (Team JDRF) and Beyond Type 1. In 2017 Chewey completed 138 races and he credits his diabestie (a diabetic’s best friend) for making this logistically possible. Chewey never allows his medical conditions to be an excuse and challenges runners to run their own race, to think outside the box, and to have the courage to change.   This episode is hosted by Matt Sorenson and is sponsored by goodr.
