With episodes nearing 350 in the STAGES archive, it's time to revisit conversations featured in our previous seasons. STAGES spotlights such episodes, in case you missed them the first time ‘round - or so you can simply savour, a second listen. Either way, you'll be accessing precious oral histories from the people who were there, on and around our stages. Dolores Dunbar possesses an energy that has equalled that of her teenage students. In her role as Head of Musical Theatre at the McDonald College of Performing Arts she has contributed to the development of the next generation of performers with a knowledge garnered from extensive industry experience in a variety of roles. After several decades as nurturer, guide and mentor, Dolores is stepping down from her teaching role; but is certainly not stepping away from the industry she adores. She made her professional stage debut in the Australian company of Funny Girl for J.C. Williamson's. A stack of shows followed for Dolores, including My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof, Chicago, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Les Miserables and Shout. Other creative roles have seen her choreograph the immensely successful production of Nunsense, serve as Company Management and direct productions of Eurovision, Copacabana and Grease. Always ready with an amusing anecdote that serves as a brilliant history lesson, Dolores is a walking encyclopaedia of our musical theatre past and the many characters who have inhabited its stage. We should all maintain the optimism, energy and passion of Dolores. She is a great champion for all of us to aspire toward. It is a joy and honour to revisit this conversation with Dolores and celebrate her immense contributions as Performer and Teacher. Bravo Dord!

Ruth was brought up in Ireland by her dancer mother and singer and actor father, to a backdrop of golden era Hollywood musicals with some Beatles thrown in for good measure.  After watching her mother teach choreography, she went on to take ballet classes herself soon after she could walk.  Studying music at University College in Dublin, she soon discovered she didn't want to perform, and focused on the academic side of her degree.  She went for her first interview after graduating for the job of Assistant Chorus Manager at the Royal Opera House, thinking it would be good interview practice.  She not only got the job, but stayed for many years in different capacities, before taking on the Company Management role at Scottish Opera and Opera Holland Park, and working closely with Opera Rara.  As the Company Manager of the Royal Opera House, Ruth had to not only bring the artists at the house to a screeching halt in the face of the pandemic, but organise and reorganise the company in the wake of the crisis that has been devastating our industry.  Ruth chats through the highs and lows of the high-pressure environments she has worked in, and what happens when you get that emergency call from prompt corner…

William Shakespeare lived his entire life in the shadow of the bubonic plague. Much of his work was composed, if not in lockdown, then in the shadow of a highly infectious disease without a known cure. This episode discusses how the plague affected some of Shakespeare's greatest works as well as how our current pandemic of Covid-19 is affecting artists right now.

Tami and Tara are officially over the pandemic.  They give an update in last week’s priorities and how their priorities are changing as they enter a recession and their business loses revenue.  Tami expresses how grateful she is for Tara, and they talk about how the stresses are different at Evyrgreen versus Ajax Union. Tami talks about the difficulties that come with running an agency that services clients on a retainer model.  Tara talks about how silent the city is, and how unnerving it is. Tami is enjoying it though; it’s like a permanent holiday. They talk about how people just this week are starting to take social distancing seriously in NYC.  Tara talks about how weird and hard it is to strike the right tone during interactions in the normal course of business during a global pandemic. Is it ok to sell? Is it ok to upsell? Is it ok to address business and financial issues? They talk about how to follow up on accounts receivables during a pandemic.  They discuss managing employee mental health during a pandemic while maintaining productivity. Tara talks about how we are good at teachable moments versus shaming moments. Tami expresses concern over her tone of voice, she knows it’s scary but for some reason she can’t change it!  Tami talks about the time that an employee accidentally wasted $18,000 and what she did about it - hint: the lesson of “I just invested $18,000 in your education” only works in the person takes responsibility for what went wrong!  “Recently, I was asked if I was going to fire an employee who made a mistake that cost the company $600,000. No, I replied, I just spent $600,000 training him.” - Thomas J Watson, IBM Listen, Tommy J. … your quote should be re-written:  “Recently, I was asked if I was going to fire an employee who made a mistake that cost the company $600,000. No, I replied, I just spent $600,000 training him and he took full responsibility for his mistake; I am sure he will never make it again.” Tami and Tara touch on imposter syndrome and how surprised they were when a man had never heard of it before. Next week they will talk about their affiliate program.
