We start with a troubling report revealing that numerous Fortune 100 companies have unknowingly hired North Korean IT workers using fake identities. These workers, often based in China or Russia, have gained access to sensitive systems, raising significant concerns about potential cyber attacks. The episode emphasizes the urgent need for companies to adopt stricter hiring practices, including thorough background checks and identity verification, as U.S. law enforcement takes action against those facilitating this scheme. The episode also covers CrowdStrike's recent testimony before Congress following a significant outage that was not attributed to a cyber attack. Senior Vice President Adam Myers explained that a combination of issues led to the incident, prompting the company to implement new safeguards and offer $60 million in customer credits. Lawmakers are pushing for greater accountability in cybersecurity, discussing potential legal reforms to hold software providers liable for negligence. This scrutiny reflects a pivotal moment in the cybersecurity landscape, where accountability and transparency are becoming increasingly essential.Additionally, the U.S. Department of Justice has updated its compliance guidelines to include the use of AI, emphasizing the need for companies to assess AI's potential risks and ensure compliance with criminal laws. Compliance officers are now expected to address AI's impact on legal compliance, highlighting the importance of proactive monitoring and risk management. The National Institute of Standards and Technology is also proposing new cybersecurity guidelines focused on identity proofing and fraud detection, urging organizations to adopt AI governance programs to enhance security. Finally, the episode touches on broader technological trends, including mobile voting and the quest for ROI on AI. Tech investor Bradley Tusk advocates for mobile voting as a means to increase voter turnout, while another article discusses the importance of breaking down enterprise silos to achieve meaningful returns on AI investments. The episode concludes with a look at the Content Authenticity Initiative led by Adobe, aimed at ensuring the authenticity of AI-generated content, and the unexpected outcomes of self-service kiosks in fast food chains, which have not led to significant job losses but have changed operational dynamics. Four things to know today 00:00 Fortune 100 Firms Unknowingly Hire North Korean Workers, Exposing Critical Gaps in Cybersecurity Hiring Practices03:14 Perfect Storm or Negligence? Building trust online and establishing authenticity, transparency, and ethical A.I. is a big task — and it's one that Andy Parsons, the Senior Director of Adobe's Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), is tackling head-on. In this episode of Creativity Squared, Andy discusses the need for a future of verifiably authentic content of all kinds to combat disinformation. With collaborators across hardware (including brands like Leica Camera!), software, publishing, and social platforms, the CAI is empowering communicators, journalists, and artists with secure provenance.  In addition to CAI, Andy explains the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), an initiative working on an open technical standard for content authenticity that's adoption is needed now more than ever. Through these standards, technology, and open source collaboration, Adobe is helping lead the way to restore trust and transparency to the media we experience. In this era where deep fakes blur the lines of reality and as we approach the 2024 elections in the U.S., this work is urgent. Andy strongly believes in media literacy and explains some of the ways Adobe is providing curriculum to students. Andy also dives into Adobe's Firefly, a creative generative A.I. engine, and the company's ethical approach to A.I. development. Democratizing creativity, Andy highlights how Firefly amplifies human potential and respects artists' rights, ensuring content authenticity from the outset. Discover the use cases for content credentials and when to consider opting in to use them, why, and how much information to reveal. If bringing trust to media resonates with you, Andy's main call to action is to get involved! This work is not done in a silo. We should all be active participants in the conversation and educate ourselves. He invites our listeners to join the CAI, engage with the community on Discord, and contribute to the mission of bringing trust to media. Helen, your Creativity Squared host, is a proud CAI member! Andy also drops some tantalizing teases about Adobe features in the pipeline — enjoy! How do we build systems that improve the way we interact with media and with each other? Truth versus Lies when it comes to content authenticity is today's timely topic and I have brought in Andy Parsons, the Senior Director of the Content Authenticity Initiative at Adobe, to consult! There is a scientific curiosity for tech leaders around how we discern 'truth' from 'lies' in the media. Especially with the advent of AI, how do we prove what content is false? As Andy clarifies, it's actually more beneficial for us to focus on learning what content to trust, rather than proving falsehoods. Given Andy's position at Adobe – besides being a SXSW speaker and oft-quoted tech expert – he's ideally suited to provide insight on the content process that is ‘Capture, Edit, Publish,' as well as the open source future of Content Authenticity. Following on from this is the idea of 'digital provenance' and using metadata that establishes the chain of custody information needed for users to make trust decisions about digital data.Everyone should have the right to click on a piece of media and know what it is and where it came from. After that, we can make up our own minds about whether it's trustworthy. With the good work of the Content Authenticity Initiative, this ideal can become more of a reality as we wade our way through 'fake news' and try to appreciate media content for the honest value it can deliver. Bring on the 2024 US election! "It's about trust. And trust is not between computers and cameras. Trust is between humans and organizations." ~ Andy ParsonsIn This Episode:- What does the Content Authenticity Initiative do?- Understanding the process of ‘Capture, Edit, and Publish'- What does digital provenance entail?- Discerning between publishers who need to be verified and authors wanting to remain anonymous - How does the Content Authenticity Initiative actually work? - How accessible will this technology be? - How will we know whether something was generated by AI?- Can we use AI to detect AI? Brian Cobb, Creative Director at Opengear, shares his thoughts on how AI tools can streamline the creative process. We go beyond the social media “sound bites” about the evils of  ChatGPT and DALL-E (!) to talk about real world applications in marketing design. What are some ways that AI can be integrated into existing tools and processes that Creatives and Designers currently use? [04:45] How can we tap into the power of AI to optimize the higher-level thinking, and automate some of the repetitive tasks to free up more time for creativity? What does this mean for the concept of an Organizing Idea? [10:12]It looks as though Adobe are taking a thoughtful approach, releasing a beta version of Firefly and incorporating AI tools into the Cloud Experience Suite. They focus on “Creators First” – offering their tools as a “Creative Copilot” – and are being careful to consider copyright issues, and respecting their core audience of professional designers and creators. [15:18]Brian's varied career has taken him through a number of agency roles, and in-house or corporate marketing roles. He compares the skill sets and mindset needed for each, and talks about the constant need to be “selling” during the agency creative process. He talks about the physical and mental toll capturing wartime images can take and the work he is doing now as the head of education at the Content Authenticity Initiative to counter misinformation.

A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Jonas Bendiksen's sharply evocative images explore themes of community, faith and identity with unsparing honesty. He has made major bodies of work all over the world, at the same time as he always also photographs the daily rhythms of life at home. As well as many critically acclaimed long-form projects he has also produced significant work for many commercial and editorial clients.Bendiksen was born in Norway in 1977. He began his career at the age of 19 as an intern at Magnum's London office, before leaving for Russia to pursue his own work as a photojournalist. Throughout the several years he spent there, Bendiksen photographed stories from the fringes of the former Soviet Union, a project that was published as the book Satellites (2006). His most recent book The Last Testament from 2017 told the story of seven men who all claimed to be the biblical Messiah returned to earth. His editorial clients include magazines such as National Geographic, Stern, TIME, Newsweek, The Sunday Times Magazine, The Guardian Weekend. On the commercial side, he has done projects for HSBC, Canon, FUJI, BCG, Red Bull and Land Rover.Bendiksen became a nominee of Magnum Photos in 2004 and a member in 2008.
