The spring Classics campaign has come to an end and the Giro d'Italia is just around the corner. To bridge the gap between the two, and with Daniel Friebe absent as he prepares for the Giro, Lionel Birnie is joined by Tudor Pro Cycling's Larry Warbasse to wrap up the first part of the season, look ahead to the first Grand Tour of the year and react to some huge sponsorship news which may help Ineos Grenadiers challenge for the Tour de France once again.In part one Larry updates on the Tour of the Alps, where he and a lot of riders were fine-tuning their form ahead of the Giro and one of his teammates made a rapid and successful transition from speed skating to elite level cycling with a stage win. In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, Daniel Friebe, Lionel Birnie and ace commentator Rob Hatch examine one venerable Italian cycling institution's latest iteration - the newly revealed 2024 Giro d'Italia route - and look at the brightest, most ambitious upstart on the same nation's racing calendar: Filippo Pozzato and his races in the Veneto.  We deliver our own assessment of a noticeably less lofty-than-usual ‘Corsa Rosa' route before hearing Jayco-AlUla head DS Matt White's verdict. We, or rather Daniel, then literally travels to Italy to find out how Pozzato is trying to shake up an ageing, ailing Italian scene - and why he may need a bit more help from the Giro itself.  In the final part of the podcast, we reflect on the predicament of the many riders who find themselves jobless at the end of the 2023 season - and one in particular, the Ethiopian Tsgabu Grmay. He tells Daniel that, while his present plight looks bleak, his dreams and inner fire are very much still alive. The shortest stage of the 2022 Giro d'Italia promised to also be one of the most significant - the first of just two time trials in this year's Corsa Rosa and a truth serum for the many pretenders to the maglia rosa. Attila Valter is one of three Hungarian riders lining up at this year's Giro d'Italia. The other two, Erik Fetter of Eolo-Kometa and Barnabás Peák of Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert, will also enjoy rapturous support over the weekend – but there is no doubt that Valter is the prodigal son of Hungarian cycling. At last year's Corsa Rosa, he became the first Hungarian to ever lead a major tour, wearing the maglia rosa for three days. In 2020, when Budapest's Grande Partenza was cancelled due to Covid, Attila told us he feared that a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity had dissolved before his eyes. This week I caught up with a former teammate of mine, Joe Dombrowski, as he finished off his preparations to head to Hungary to start his seventh Giro d'Italia. The Italian Grand Tour is a really special race to be a part of and Joe is a true Giro specialist. We rode the race as teammates in 2018, and it was obvious to me the affiliation this former winner of the U23 race has with all things Giro. We caught up on Joe's own career and highlights from the race, as well as our impressions and thoughts on probably the most beautiful race of the season.  (read more at lifeinthepeloton.com) With the Giro d'Italia kicking off this weekend, I thought it would be great to chat with a rider who has built his career on the Corsa Rosa. Joe Dombrowski is the archetypal Giro rider: he's a former winner of the U23 or ‘Baby' Giro, he's built for the mountains, loves it when a stage goes uphill out of the neutral, and in 2021, after nearly ten years of trying, he finally became a stage winner there. For Joe, it makes sense that the Italian Three-week Stage Race would always be a special event and form a key focal point of his racing career. As he points out though, “If the Tour is the Superbowl, then the Giro is college football”, and it's true that making a career as a Giro specialist doesn't come with the glory of doing the same thing at the Tour de France. But for the connoisseurs of the sport, the Giro is probably the stage race of the year.  We discussed what it meant for him to be able to win the U23 race as a young rider, and how he has carried that reputation into his career as a professional. He also took me through the highs of his stage win in 2021, as well as the lows that followed when he crashed out in the very next stage.  We delved into the aspects of the racing at the Giro that make it so unique, and so hard at the same time. We also managed a bit of a laugh at some of the many uniquely frustrating quirks that can happen outside of the racing there, which, trust me, can sometimes be the things that break you at this race.  The Giro is a race that really is everything for Joe, so I was really happy to get this pod in with him. It also reminded me of my own love-hate relationship with the Giro. It's a beautiful race, and I'm really excited to follow this year's edition… from a distance. The Giro d'Italia: it's about beauty, style, resilience and suffering. There will be bunch sprints, punchy time trials, cruel mountains and lots of very cool Italian cycle-styling. The 2022 race starts this Friday in Budapest.
