The goal of the proposed NICHE facility: To understand the joint destructive forces of wind and waves —at full scale — in order to design infrastructure capable of resisting damage from hurricanes, tornadoes, surge flooding, and related natural hazards. Among its capabilities, NICHE will enable: testing full-scale residential structures to failure; testing protective capabilities of natural elements such as vegetation; testing of “gray” structures structures like seawalls and breakwaters; investigations and modeling of coastal processes, including sediment transport. This future NSF-funded research laboratory is called the “National Full-Scale Testing Infrastructure for Community Hardening in Extreme Wind, Surge, and Wave Events,” or NICHE.

Once in a great while, an individual connects with an audience. News anchor Walter Cronkite was often called “the most trusted man in America.” Vin Scully was the “voice of baseball.” For legions of motorsports fanatics, our next guest's encyclopedic knowledge and booming baritone cemented their connection with all manner of two- and four-wheel competition. In his youth, Dave Despain aspired to race motorcycles but admits he lacked the necessary courage and talent, never mind he stood head and shoulders above his two-wheel heroes. Despain called flat-track and road-racing events before accepting broader-reaching auto-racing assignments and later hosting his own TV shows, among them “WindTunnel with Dave Despain.”Despain is a motorcyclist to his core. Studio work in the can, he would often ride one of his bikes countless miles to a distant destination to fulfill his public-address duties. Even off the clock, Despain found himself on the seat of a motorcycle, frequently his trusted Kawasaki KLR650, which he ultimately rode to Alaska, a trip that he discusses in detail on this episode of “Driven To Ride.”All our links: https://linktr.ee/driventoridepodcastBusiness Inquiries: hello@driventoridepodcast.com Connect with Us:Website: www.driventoridepodcast.comInstagram: www.Instagram.com/driventoridepodcastFacebook: www.facebook.com/driventorideEmail:hello@driventoridepodcast.com

Episode 2: Wind tunnel research to protect low-rise buildings from hurricane winds In this episode, Pedro Fernández-Cabán describes specific ways roofs can be altered to redirect windflow and reduce suction pressure – and roof damage. Parapets, for instance. Another goal for his project: use the UF Flow Field Modulator to develop a roadmap for wind conditions, revealing how different locations are subject to specific sorts of damaging wind fields – and to provide mitigation advice to builders and homeowners based on that roadmap. Lauren starts by asking Suni about what it was like to compete in the Olympics. Then, they move onto a gut wrenching aha moment at the corporate job. Everyone around her was making more and doing less! Cue the personal finance wind tunnel. Suni is still working on balance, after growing up working extra hard as an athlete. She breaks down her 10 doors and reminds us you don't have to grow for the sake of growing. Remember what your goals are! Get this… you can pay properties off if you want! The two dive a little deeper into her short-term rentals, like making the initial STR choice because it was a small, weird space. Suni furnished her first one with used furniture. It was “fine.” She details converting a duplex into a triplex, and whether it was worth it or not (it was!). It's not all rainbows and butterflies though…. Lauren and Suni talked about both the pros and cons of STRs. Finally, she talks about her Nightmare Before Christmas themed Airbnb. Is this the future of STRs? About Suni: Fourteen years ago, Sunitha “Suni” Rao retired from nearly a decade of playing tennis professionally and competing on the world's largest stages – including the 2008 Beijing Olympics – at the age of 23. Upon retiring, she was equipped with a sixth-grade education, almost no money and very little knowledge of how the world worked outside of her sport. Fast forward to the present, she has graduated with honors from Villanova University's MBA program, and has built a thriving real estate business with ten doors in her portfolio. A few weeks ago, we headed to the wind tunnel at the Silverstone Sports Engineering Hub to find out what the best-value aero upgrades are. Our aero guru for the day was Stephen Roche, The Bike Tailor – an expert in bike fitting, aero testing and custom builds, based in London and Brighton. Off the back of that test, we sat down for a chat with Stephen, with the aim of demystifying wind tunnel testing. As well as discussing how we set up our own test, Stephen explains why cycling brands love to do wind tunnel tests at such high speeds, how wind tunnel results translate into the real world, and much more. Lessons of a Wind Tunnel Dummy When Zipp engineers head to the wind tunnel, they bring Jonathan Jacob along as their favorite test rider. Jonathan, or JJ as everyone calls him, is a SRAM employee and two-time national champion bike racer. You could also call JJ Zipp's unofficial wind tunnel test dummy, as the model rider when Zipp goes to the wind tunnel. JJ embraces the role, spending more than 10 hours as in the wind tunnel in just the past four months alone. In this episode of the Zipp Speed Podcast, Zipp content manager Dan Lee sits down with JJ and Zipp senior design engineer John Leachman to discuss lessons learned from all those hours in the tunnel. JJ breaks down what he can apply from the tunnel to time trialing, his specialty. John then explains how the wind tunnel is still a crucial tool in wheel innovation even as Zipp does more real-world testing and Rolling Road testing to realize speed gains through decreased rolling resistance and other factors.

This week's Wind Tunnel takes you inside one of Honda's flagship teams, behind the scenes in a pursuit of one of racing's most unique trophies and analysis of a team's attempt to manipulate a race's outcome. When the Bank of America Roval 400 went to overtime, it set up n exciting finish that catapulted Christopher Bell into the Round of 8. It also set up a desperation laden final 2 laps for SHR's Chase Briscoe who needed to gain several spots to knock Kyle Larsen out of his transfer spot. As Briscoe carved through the field on new tires, his teammate, Cole Custer slowed on the backstretch which resulted in several of the spots Chase was pursuing to slow as well. Sellers and Layne Riggs took the Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series National Championship right down to the final races at Dominion Speedway and only after a post season audit did Sellers discover that he had lost the title that he left Dominion thinking that he had won.But Sellers found a silver lining to that cloud when he took the top honors after 15 years of trying at MARTINSVILLE Speedway's Valley Star 300 adding a Grandfather clock to his Trophy Case. Sellers takes this week's Advance Auto Parts Victory lap and we talk about the roller coaster ride of emotions those 7 days created. All that as well as a recap of the NASCAR Playoffs stop at Charlotte Motor Speedway's Roval on this week's Wind Tunnel.

It was a soap opera that had been percolating for several months, in fact speculation started as an undercurrent when Longtime Busch and JGR partner M&M Mars announced last season that this would be their final season in NASCAR.That sponsor announcement started a journey that ended Tuesday with the 2 time Cup Champion's announcement that he was joining Richard Childress Racing in 2023. But there remains several issues yet to be resolved. On this week's Wind Tunnel we will attempt to unpack the obvious and not so obvious ramifications of Kyle Busch's move. The Athletic's Jordan Bianchi was one of the first to break the story.Jack and Jordan will explore the event's timeline, the “domino effect” as well Richard Childress's comparison of Busch to Dale Earnhardt, Sr. Bob Pockrass has a reputation for breaking news. His work on Fox has become such a reliable source that many of us follow the leads that he uncovers first.Jack will visit with Bob and get his take on what this move by Kyle means for Toyota, JGR , Tyler Redick and Richard Childress Racing. And Lenny Batycki of Performance Racing Network and their Short track show AT THE TRACK will take this week's Victory Lap when he and Jack trace the short track implications. KBM Motorsports has been then launching pad for many aspiring young short trackers and Batycki will weigh in on what if anything changes there. All that and a comprehensive recap of the weekend's racing events on this week's Episode.
This week's Wind Tunnel guest list includes a sophomore IndyCar driver that has snared three wins as part of Team Penske's 3-car juggernaut. He is Scott McLaughlin who dominated the Australian Supercar Series prior to joining Penske's IndyCar effort. I think you will enjoy Scott's review of his season, how he gained confidence and overcame rookie jitters to establish himself as one of the Top Dogs in IndyCar.This week's Advance Auto Parts Victory Lap is a departure from the normal short tracker guests. After a lifetime behind the wheel that included 2 Xfinity Championships Randy LaJoie has been at the forefront of safety and revolutionized the design and manufacture of racing seats. And, along the way, is credited with saving thousands of short track drivers from serious injury and even death. You don't want to miss Randy's free wheeling and honest recounting of his journey. And with the NASCAR Playoffs under way, Jeff Burton drops in to break down the 16 driver playoff roster. Darlington proved to be unkind to a number of playoff drivers and saw a non playoff drive, Erik Jones, take the iconic number 43 back to Darlington's Victory Lane. Burton and Jack will react to Darlington as well as what seems to be an undercurrent of discontent regarding some issues with the NextGen Car.All that plus a recap of NASCAR's Darlington outing and IndyCar's Portland Grand Prix.
