Are top cybersecurity Stocks CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks at War? In this episode, Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey discuss the recent war of words in the cybersecurity industry, particularly involving Palo Alto Networks (PANW) vs CrowdStrike (CRWD). We highlight the bold statements made by CrowdStrike's CEO, George Kurtz, and the company's unique position as a single platform, single agent cloud software provider in cybersecurity. However, it's also important to understand the competition and room for growth in the industry overall. Stated another way, CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks may not be the head-to-head competitors the investment community pits them as. Chip Stock Investor uses its recently released Cybersecurity Industry Flow to explain. At the end of the day, CrowdStrike's financial performance and operating leverage were real standouts in this last quarter. Nick and Kasey emphasize the importance of focusing on company operations and long-term financials when considering investments in cybersecurity stocks like this one. While that might not sound ideal, higher bond yields or a recession could make a potentially ugly situation for investors even worse. "The combination of rising borrowing costs and heightened recession risks could begin to tip zombie companies into bankruptcy," a team led by Jason Pride, chief of investment strategy and research at Glenmede, wrote in a Tuesday client note. Stocks, unlike bonds, often are at risk of seeing their entire value wiped out if a company files for bankruptcy. Recessions also tend to shake out smaller and weaker companies with high debt loads, in part because funding from Wall Street can dry up. The Glenmede strategy team arrived at their zombie figure by looking at the share of companies in the Russell 3000 index RUA whose earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization didn't meet their interest costs in the past three years. While off peak levels in the wake of the pandemic, the chart suggests an elevated risk of public U.S. companies vulnerable to collapse. All you have to do is look which 10 stocks among the 30 Dow Jones Industrials components have the highest dividend yield on the last day of the year. Then, invest an equal amount in each of those 10 top-yielding stocks, and hold those investments through the end of the subsequent year. When the end of the year comes, you can either abandon the Dogs of the Dow strategy entirely, or you can repeat it for the following year. If you choose to stick with the Dogs of the Dow, you'll just need to rebalance to account for relative performance of the 10 stocks, along with replacing any stocks whose yields have fallen below the threshold for Dogs of the Dow eligibility with those whose yields have risen sufficiently to take their place. In this podcast episode, with help from Patrick Gray of Risky Business, we delve into the rising concerns surrounding cyberattacks on high-profile companies, including Medibank, Optus, Latitude, and Canva. These incidents occurred before hackers gained access to advanced AI tools and cryptocurrencies, making detection more challenging. While share prices tend to recover after cyberattacks, sometimes the impact can be enduring. The democratization of security risks means that every company is now a potential target, with various industries, including hospitals and law firms, facing unique challenges. Surprisingly, major banks maintain a lower risk profile due to robust security processes. For investors, there are opportunities in cybersecurity companies, though most are pricey growth plays. The sector exhibits strong revenue growth, but profitability varies. Today's discussion begins with the big shake-up in Shopify's (SHOP) management team, specifically the appointment of Jeff Hoffmeister as CFO. Josh explains how tech companies hiring Wall St veterans signals their maturity and talks about the possibilities of Shopify expanding into banking and loans for the companies it supports. Josh and Ryan then chew over the stickiness of cybersecurity with Josh, explaining why, if you're a CSO at any company, it's the last part of the IT stack you eliminate. He also gets into why he's so bullish on Crowdstrike (CRWD). While Josh maintains that Nvidia (NVDA) is his favorite company, he lays out why he reduced his position by almost 100% and at the price at which he's looking to reenter. He also shares his thoughts on why the CHIPS act is far too little, far too late. Lastly, Josh and Ryan discuss Tesla (TSLA). The prospect of the company mining its own lithium and why, like Apple, greater vertical integration is likely to improve their product. They also address the fact that no other company has a bigger key-man risk than Tesla.
There is a ransomware threat every three seconds across the globe, says Gordon Lawson. He and Shaul Eyal discuss the outlook for cybersecurity stocks.
