“Empathy must guide us—if we truly feel for our feline friends, declawing wouldn't exist.” Declawing might sound harmless, but what if it's one of the most misunderstood and harmful practices affecting cats today? In this powerful conversation, Stacy LeBaron chats with Dr. Jennifer Conrad, the trailblazing veterinarian behind The Paw Project, an organization on a mission to stop declawing for good. Dr. Conrad unravels the dark history of declawing, explaining why it's less about trimming claws and more about amputating a cat's defenses—both physically and emotionally. With passion, relatability, and a wealth of knowledge, Dr. Conrad takes us into the billion-dollar industry that's kept this cruel practice alive and shares how her team is taking the fight to the legislative level. You'll learn how to spot humane veterinarians, advocate for change, and help your local community embrace more compassionate practices. Plus, don't miss her insights in American Cats: The Good, the Bad, and the Cuddly, a new documentary from Amy Hoggart that exposes the shocking truths behind America's relationship with its feline friends. Encouraging Volunteers to Create School Programming for Oculus Just one addition to Howard's notes: The Oculus Go headsets in the Call of the Wild room are capable of storing a couple hours of content each and you do not need access to a computer or WIFI to play back the content once it has been loaded onto the headset. These currently cost $250.00 each, but we can get $199.00 versions that hold about half that, or an hour of content we choose. We currently have 3 main pieces of content. • One is a display of 20 of our 1-5 min videos where the user can choose what they want to see with the controller. • One is a display of a few of the same videos where it starts with the first video and rolls through all of them in sequence. The user can't change what plays. • One is a work in progress where the user can choose their own adventure. As they walk around the sanctuary they can click on signs (pictures of the cats) and play that cat's story before being returned back to the tour path. Due to storage limits on the Oculus Go you have to know which one of the above you want to present and set it up via a computer and WIFI and make sure all of the videos are downloaded to the headsets so that once you get to your destination, you won't need WIFI or a computer. The headsets come with a warning that they are not intended for children under the age of 13. I don't know why there is such a caveat but guess it could have to do with kids getting all caught up in an experience and running into walls or falling off stairs or balconies. Jennie wrote: Hi Howard and Jennifer, Lisa and I discussed this and are interested in helping with creating a virtual reality program for 4th graders, since Florida is a theme for the common core for that grade. I would like to know how long this presentation should be and what you want us to do for the next step. I also would like to create an extension of the virtual reality presentation in the form of a project-based learning lesson that could be used in classrooms to make sure this is seem by the kids as something serious and not just entertainment! The whole point of my original proposal was for kids to have a meaningful experience with an in-depth project so they would remember it share it, and help take action. I hope to continue with this idea, even if it is shared differently. I wonder if we could have a 4th grade teacher immersion day to help them understand the virtual reality experience and understand how to implement the project. Of course it would have to be limited as we cannot have too many people on the property at once. With this said, I would not be able to go out to schools as I have so much I am doing in retirement. I do not want to turn this into another school job! Lisa is working as a substitute at schools and may look for a permanent position. We could brainstorm what we might do with this new tool. We would have to consider how this would be shared with schools. - Jennie Howard wrote: Sorry for slow response, I was jammed and traveling. You will have to forgive my not being familiar with your profession's lingo but I don't know what a 4th grade teacher immersion day is or a project based learning lesson. This is NOT intended to be entertainment. It is intended to educate in a supremely engaging way. Since the time we met we have made many more videos, I think we have about 50 now, and Lauren has been tasked with helping Carole. We also even since then have upgraded the headset equipment and our software. The technology is evolving at a lightning pace. The challenge in the classroom is that it takes a very powerful computer system to let 20 or more people view the VR video in headsets simultaneously. That is why we are looking into outfitting a mobile unit. Friday Susan and I are meeting with a senior person at Lazy Days the big RV dealer to chat about any options they might have. We need to evolve this as we go, but initially I feel we start with the target of a 20 minute video. I am guessing that a "project based learning lesson" involves our either having someone in the classroom or teaching teachers. We have no one to do the former since neither of you can, and have no one to do the latter unless you can. But, the beauty of creating a VR experience is that it does not require a teacher. In fact, what is more important is that the person accompanying the vehicle have the tech skills to make sure the equipment functions well. To the extent we can add a person knowledgeable about the material, and even better with teaching skills, we could add some interactive experience between that person and the students in the mobile vehicle. But, that is not essential and if done at all it could be done based on when a person is available. Or, while not envisioned at this time, if we felt there was enough benefit and this became popular enough, we could hire a person to do that. So, a future assignment for you two could be to design that once we have the VR experience up and running. I would suggest two next steps: 1. We arrange for you both to get with Lauren and have her set you up with the headsets and show you how to access the videos so you can get a better feel of the capabilities and the feeling associated with the experience. Depending on how much material there is we might arrange for you to take a headset home for a few days. Much of what we are doing now is along the lines of the viewer sharing the keeper experience. When you wear the headsets, you are part of the scene. For instance, it is as if you standing two feet from Nikita's head as she eats, vividly seeing how she takes in the food and chews. And if you turn your head with the headsets on, it is the same as if you were standing there turning your head, so you would see the keeper with you or the rest of the enclosure. 2. Then the big task once you see what can be done with this is for you to basically create a script. It does not have to be a continuous flow of words, there can be pauses while the VR video plays. What are the criteria for the script? What comes to my mind is: a) we would want it to meet whatever criteria there are to qualify as education at the level you choose, most likely science education. I am guessing that the material we are familiar with that is most relevant to this goal is i) conservation information and ii) species information. b) we would like to include some of our basic mission messages: the cats should not be pets, should not be used in entertainment, should be saved in the wild not kept in cages. We likely have to walk a line here to have the material not be seen as "controversial" nor cause opposition from sources that might still by some be viewed as credible, like AZA zoos. So the "not kept in cages" might not fit or might have to be done delicately, or the message might be framed as "ideally we should focus on preserving the cats in the wild versus having them on display," a statement that is harder to dispute than saying, for instance, zoos should not exist. Declawing is another issue. We would want to weave the stories of particular cats into this to make the points memorable, so perhaps Reise is the declaw issue cat. c) I suspect if we do the above we automatically promote BCR, but last on the list that comes to my mind as I type this is to promote the work of Big Cat Rescue, keeping in mind though that we really do not want to promote more school group tours. We look at this effort to some extent as an alternative to those tours, that is not subject to weather, to whether the cats are out. However, it would be fine to promote more attendance at our kids tours, or if the grade level is ten year olds adult tours, because then we capture the parents. d) And one more that comes to mind as I type this is a "what can you do" element to this that motivates action on the part of the children. Like not attend the circus, not pet tiger cubs, write letters to Congress. So, that is my stream of consciousness answer to your questions. Carole may have some other thoughts. Howard Baskin Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. These are my views and opinions. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story. The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/ I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story. My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet. The Veterinary Viewfinder was founded in 2016 to “tackle the toughest topics in veterinary medicine.” One of the tough topics we've covered repeatedly is the growing movement to ban non-therapeutic, non-preventive procedures such as feline digit amputation, often referred to as “declawing.” This week we're excited to introduce you to the Canadian Animal Health Technician (same as US RVT/CVT/LVT) who succeeded in the enactment of a law banning declawing in the Province of Quebec. If you're wondering, Quebec is the second-most populous province with a population of over 8 million. Not bad for a vet tech! Hosts Dr. Ernie Ward and Beckie Mossor, RVT are thrilled to bring you a master class in how one person can bring about big change. Leading the class is the amazing vet tech (animal health technician in Canadian-speak) Alexandra Yaksich, BSc., AHT. Alex wears many hats. She is currently working as a freelance writer, communications consultant, content creator, and relief animal health technician. The story we share this week is about how anyone can overcome their doubts and fears to create change. Viewfinders, prepare to be inspired! Alex is a loyal podcast subscriber and decided to email us at veterinaryviewfinder@gmail.com and tell us she had a story to share! (You can, too!) If there's something in your world you want to improve or change, Alex lays out a practical, logical, and systemic approach. Whether it's animal welfare, social justice, LGBTQ+, worker rights, or anything you feel is wrong or less than ideal, we believe this episode will not only inspire, but offers a pathway for change. Viewfinders, this is a good one! Follow Alex on Instagram (@alexandra.yaksich) or connect with her via LinkedIn at https://bit.ly/3znSCoZ.

Anyone who has ever owned a cat knows they can be moody creatures—accepting a gentle pat one minute, thrashing their claws at you the next. To avoid this, some cat owners take their cats to the vet to have their claws removed, but animal rights advocates deeply oppose this practice. This year, the Legislature will consider HB 1226, which would ban cat declawing. The surgery would become a misdemeanor; there would, however, be an exception to the ban if there was a medical reason for declawing the cat. Hosts Anna Brown and Mike Dunbar of Citizens Count will break it down in this week's episode of $100 Plus Mileage. This podcast is produced in partnership with Citizens Count, The Granite State News Collaborative and The Marlin Fitzwater Center for Communication at Franklin Pierce University.

Declawing is a cruel and unnecessary operation that causes immense pain to cats - and yet, in the US, around 25% are subjected to it. Many people only do the surgery because their vets recommend it and they don't actually know what it involves. So this week, we'll discuss those details, how declawing became so prevalent, and some humane alternatives. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/kittenkaboodlepod/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kittenkaboodlepod/support

In this episode, Stacy is joined by Camille Labchuk, an animal rights lawyer and the executive director of Animal Justice, Canada’s only animal law advocacy organization. Camille also hosts the Animal Justice’s Paw & Order podcast, which was reviewed in the CCP blog back in February. Stacy and Camille discuss what’s going on in Canada with regard to cats, including the fact that, as Camille puts it, “People are really waking up to the idea that cat declawing shouldn’t be a practice that we allow any more in society.” Stacy and Camille also chat about community cats in Canada, how Camille would like to see the government give more support to community cat-related issues, and about the relatively new legal concept of putting an animal at risk. This episode is sponsored in part by Doobert.com, and KittySift. In this episode, Dr. Jennifer Conrad, who founded The Paw Project in 1999, joins Stacy to discuss the organization’s mission to end declawing in the U.S. & Canada, using education, research, and legislation. The Paw Project is made up completely of veterinarians and the group compiled the evidence, drafted the legislation, composed the language of the legislation, built the coalition of support, and obtained the representatives for every law prohibiting declawing in the U.S. Stacy and Dr. Conrad discuss the surprising way Dr. Conrad became interested in ending declawing and educating people everywhere on its devastating effects on cats. “Declawing is a misnomer,” Dr. Conrad tells Stacy. “It is really more appropriately called de-knuckling. It is the amputation of a toe bone.” They discuss the behavioral issues of biting and litter box avoidance that declawed cats have been shown to be prone to, and they talk about the organization’s new “Claw-Friendly” certification for veterinary practices that do not perform declaw surgeries. With legislation banning declawing passed recently in New York, and more bills in the works around the country, Dr. Conrad encourages listeners to join The Paw Project’s mailing list to stay in the loop on action needed regarding legislation in their area. She notes that, “There is a reason that we need to ban declawing: It actually saves cats’ lives … If we could get these bans all across the United States, we would be saving millions of cats’ lives.” To learn more, visit The Paw Project’s website. In this episode we're talking about something that we take very seriously -- Cat Declawing. We bring it up due to the recent bill being passed in New York to make it illegal to declaw your cat in that state, which would make NY the first state in the USA to do this. Making this practice illegal should be done in all states and there are plenty of countries that do not allow it -- we should be one of them. We also talk about games, mostly E3 but for once cat get some well deserved attention for this one. Cat declawing sounds like a reasonable way to prevent damage to furniture and homes, and keep cats who may be given to shelters with families. But the science simply doesn’t support any of it – and declawing isn’t even what it sounds like. In this special report, I connected with Dr. Margie Scherk, a veterinarian who specializes in feline medicine and surgery, and wants the College of Veterinarians of British Columbia to outlaw the practice. According to a CBC article, nearly 80 per cent of BC vets who responded to the survey support a ban on declawing, and 62 per cent already stopped conducting the procedure themselves. Dr. Scherk is hoping that greater public awareness on the truth about cat declawing and support for a petition she has created will push the College into moving forward with a ban – something that happened in Nova Scotia just last December.
