Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) occurs as a result of a viral mutation in cats infected with feline coronavirus.  For decades, FIP has been a devastating condition in cats with an extremely high (95%) mortality rate and no reliable treatment options. A few years ago it was discovered that the antiviral drugs remdesivir and GS-441524 are highly effective for treating FIP, but these drugs are very expensive and there was no legal means of accessing them in Canada or the US – until now!  As of 2024, Canadian veterinarians can access these life-saving drugs through an Emergency Drug Release (EDR).  As these drugs and the process to access them are new to many Ontario veterinarians, the Ontario Animal Health Network is thrilled to have Dr. Kelly St. Denis with us to walk us through some of the ins and outs of these new treatment options. Urine is more than a natural waste product—it can provide a wealth of information about an individual's overall health, and urinalysis is one of the oldest diagnostic tests in existence. Its use has been dated as far back as Mesopotamia and ancient Greek physician Hippocrates wrote extensively about the use of urinalysis in diagnosing disease in the 6th century BCE. Today, urinalysis can be used to detect a number of diseases and ailments including urinary tract infections, kidney disease, diabetes, and bladder cancer. In this episode, Will Hutt, Head of Primary Care, Acute Rapid & Decentralized Urinalysis at Siemens Healthineers, is joined by Nancy Brunzel, a medical laboratory scientist and author of the book Fundamentals of Urine and Body Fluid Analysis and Jon Stradinger, director of assay development for point of care at Siemens Healthineers. It is a good read and the U2 singer is a very good writer. He knows how to tell a story. But perhaps we should not be surprised at this. Bono has penned a long string of very good songs. This is an impressive  book. Made up of forty short stories. Each based on a U2 song. But it works well also as unit, as a narrative. I like autobiographies. If they are written well. And this one is. It is particularly insightful about the origins of U2, Bono's relationships with the other band members and with Paul McGuinness their former manager. So too about the influence of other lifelong friends. Nathalie Dowgray speaks with Ilona Rodan, Kelly St. Denis, Samantha Taylor, and Sarah Heath - all contributors to the new guidelines. We share some of the positive impacts that we've seen and how attitudes have changed in the 10 years since ISFM and AAFP launched the original guidelines - the cat friendly clinic programme and the cat friendly practice programme. We discuss reasons for updating the title of the guidelines and why we need to move away from negative terms like “angry” or “aggressive” when approaching cats in the consulting room. We explain some of the terminologies that we use in the guidelines and why it's important for vets to recognise emotions and understand cats on a deeper level. We also talk about how you can create a welcoming environment for cats, whether you work in mixed practice or cat-only clinics and the benefits of working in a cat friendly way. Lastly, we share our top tips for cat friendly interactions! The guidelines are being published in November 2022 and will be free to view on the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgeries website. For ISFM members, the full recording of this roundtable discussion is available for you to listen to at portal.icatcare.org. And at twenty-two years old, running a paranormal dating agency with my bestie and living in the magical society of Nepos is an amazing life. Not gonna lie though, it'd be better with a little action. Chosen. Framed by my father's murderer. Running from the fae courts. Fated to never touch the man who sets my blood on fire.Life was looking up for me not long ago. Now, it's looking all the way down. This latest shitstorm? Yeah, it takes the cake and the beetroot tickle. The father who shunned me from birth lays cold and dead. The courts are in turmoil and after blood. My blood. I need to find his killer, yet that mystery pales in comparison to the madness crushing fae in its giant grip.I'm desperate to find the door to Underhill before true anarchy descends. The answers I seek are on the other side, I'm sure of it. With two gifted swords, a magic shield, some finnicky power, and dubious spirit for company, I must locate the path to our native realm again. And if I can manage that while resisting the Unseelie fae stalking my every footstep, then all the better. But I am part human after all.

Secretly in love with a man who doesn't want me.I 'm still just Alli, aka the half-human orphan fae, but my life is looking up for the first time. It only took me my whole 24 years. But when Underhill—the ancestral home of the fae—shatters, making it impossible for any fae to enter, I'm the only one who knows who did it.A secret that will be the death of me if I do nothing. A brutal madness spreads through the fae as they lose their connection to Underhill, and to save my people, my only choice is to leave all I have fought for and go on the run.Unless I figure out how the hell magic that has existed since the dawn of time was destroyed with a single touch, well, an entire life spent fighting to prove myself isn't going to mean anything at all.I must find the answer to the riddle of Underhill's shattering. Hunted by the very man I loved once upon a time.

The Pet Doctor - Keeping your pets healthy & pet wellness - Pets & Animals on Pet Life Radio (PetLifeRadio.com)

To let your cat outside or not, that is one of those vexing questions that cat owners wrestle with… the pros and cons are almost limitless. Pros: Envision your cat scampering up trees, stalking butterflies in the tall grass or lazily basking in the sun…what an idyllic life for a cat. Cons: the cat fight on your back fence that results in a deep bite wound and the subsequent deadly Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) infection it contracts, or the encounter with a speeding car as it attempts to cross the street and let's not forget about the mauling on your own property by a free roaming dog. Cats love to go outside but we know that there are innumerable dangers just beyond your backdoor, even in your backyard. But is it fair to keep them solely inside? Won't they get bored, fat, destructive? What can concerned responsible cat owners do to keep their cats and the wildlife that cats are drawn to predate safe? Kelly St. Onge is an Artistically Science-Minded Mathematician with dreams of being an Astronaut. Attending college courses in Bellingham, Longview, Vancouver, and Portland - Kelly has thus far completed classes in Engineering Physics, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus through Calc-4, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Discrete Math, Java, Data Structure, C++ Programming, and many more (that I think he casually breezed over). Kelly's interests are vast, from Rick and Morty to Star Wars, Travis Scott to Hall N Oates, from people to robots and football to snowboarding - he's passionate about learning, living life with a smile, and deep dirty heavy filthy, bass. We begin with a scaffolding of Mathematics, Science, Quantum Physics, Quantum Computing, and Artificial Intelligence. We touch on lots of things math and science: Layers of abstraction, bits, programming, compiling, machine code, particles, superposition, prime numbers, infinite numbers, induction and some current progressions surrounding A.I. - and we swing by Schrodingers Cat, A-Ha Moments, De-bugging YO' SELF, The Mandolorian, Malicious Compliance, The Singularity, Kung-Fu Panda, and even Illegal Numbers. Kelly and I together try to use silly analogies, broad terminologies, terrible accents, a couple of beers and a long-lasting friendship to hopefully open up new possibilities and understandings for listeners. Science, Math, Music... it's all Art. It's all language for the taking. Not blocked off for any certain types or caged by any One Way-sayers. Being open, friendly, and interested can bring you great knowledge and companionship. When Kelly and I first met I had recently graduated high school and fell in love with electronic music - we bonded over Bassnectar's Divergent Spectrum album and soon after he actually taught me the basics of djing and let me take home his Dj Controller to practice. Who knew that his kindness and our mutual love for music would catapult a friendship through a decade of adventures? Cheers to many more, Sir K3lls. What program are you running? is it time to upgrade your mental software? Can you De-bug your own system? When you learn processes pertaining to new knowledge, how can you return those same processes inward towards old stories? Create the mental structure that is sensible to you and start listening to, or searching for - the wisdom that surrounds us all. Be well.

That said, there are no f-bombs (sort of the king of English curse words), but, in the fine tradition of the 80s movies from which it drew inspiration, there are a few four letter words sprinkled in the text for emphasis.  No one has sex, either on or off the page.  No one loses a head or has organs ripped out.  But there are some fight scenes, as well as some introspective narrative passages on more adult-oriented things like growing older, waxing nostalgic for the seeming simplicity and innocence of childhood, the inevitable regrets along the way, the aftermath of traumatic experiences, the complicated and halting way romantic relationships start, and the struggle to become one's own person ... stuff that may not necessarily be the most interesting to an eight year old.  I sometimes say that if it were a movie, it'd probably get a PG-13 rating, which coincidentally, is what the movie The Martian is rated, and that does have a few f-bombs :) Anyway, sometimes I think we protect children in very weird ways (e.g. banning books and other kinds of media).  But that is a different topic altogether and dangerously close to real world activism, which this corner of the internets strives to steer away from. Onto other things ... -Although I've had guests on the show before (e.g. authors Lo-arna Green and Coreena McBurnie), I've not had live guests yet.  That is, until next week, when my brother, who writes about video games, will be joining me live!  We'll be discussing the video games we tried to make when we were kids (as I discussed previously in this post which has a collection of Tomb Raider sprites I made for a game I never finished). -Starving Artist section: make some passive $$ by watching videos on your phone (you don't have to watch 'em!) on Swagbucks!  See this guide on Reddit for the apps you'll need to get in order to maximize your points: https://www.reddit.com/r/SwagBucks/comments/229bf6/detailed_guide_about_swagbuckscom_for_the_newbies/  -Lastly, today I announce the winner of last week's raffle hosted by Kelly St. Clare, chosen at random by the gods in the Rafflecopter machine: Jeremy J., you're the big winner! (You'll be receiving an email from me with more info).  Congratulations! This episode originally aired on Feb 22, 2016. https://13thhr.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php?post_type=post&jetpack-copy=3149 Man, this was a super long episode.  I guess I got carried away talking about the 80s teen movies :)  Anyway, these were all influences, one way or another, for The Thirteenth Hour and the themes running through the book (i.e. figuring yourself out while straddling the line between childhood and adulthood, then trying to find your way in a seemingly inhospitable world). -More on the writer of many of these films, the late, great John Hughes, as remembered by a teenage penpal he kept correspondence with for a number of years. -Movies discussed (that link to Youtube clips): --Sixteen Candles  -always loved the song at the end (done by The Thompson Twins) --The Breakfast Club -great scene - Bender falls through the ceiling - cracks me up every time! --Some Kind of Wonderful -Ahh, first kisses.  Something special about them, especially when it's with a longtime friend. -As an aside, the John Hughes film Pretty in Pink was similar in some ways, but the genders were switched and had a great ending song by OMD. --Real Genius -The great ending song by Tears for Fears -Speaking of ending songs, The Thirteenth Hour is getting its own 80s-style ending song soon!  Details to come.  Watch for it on the soundtrack page on bandcamp! -Ever want to learn to throw playing cards?  Now you can learn to throw like Logan from The Thirteenth Hour with, well, a handmade Thirteenth Hour throwing card kit.  Available on eBay. -Kelly St. Clare, who recently wrote a post here about her experiences with the social media crowd blasting site Thunderclap, has been kind enough to host a raffle for free copies of The Thirteenth Hour on her site starting 2/22 (today)! -Guest reading by historical fantasy author Coreena McBurnie from Prophecy, a novel about Antigone, from the Greek myth Oedipus Rex.  Welcome to the podcast and thank you for sharing a segment of your work! -Starving Artist section: make some passive $$ by watching videos on your phone (yo udon't have to watch 'em!) - Checkpoints As always, thanks for listening! ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞  Signup for the mailing list for a free special edition podcast and a demo copy of The Thirteenth Hour! This episode originally aired on Feb 15, 2016 https://13thhr.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php?post_type=post&jetpack-copy=3115 This is an episode that breaks a little from my so-called tradition of talking about escapist entertainment and discusses things that may actually have, well ... practical use to you if you're an aspiring writer or artist. This past week, fantasy author Kelly St. Clare was kind enough to host an article I did on podcasting as easily and cheaply as possible.  (If you haven't checked out her great series, The Tainted Accords, do yourself a favor and do so!)  She, in turn, discussed her recent experience with the social media crowd speaking site, Thunderclap. In any event, this particular episode touches on some of the material in the post above.  But whereas the post walks you through the creation of a podcast, this audio clip is more of a dialogue about why podcasting may be of help to you as an author/artist and discusses some suggestions about what you can do with it as a platform (e.g. interviews with guests, behind-the-scenes stories, influences, etc). I reference the article "1000 True Fans" by Kevin Kelly in the podcast.  It's talked a lot about in marketing circles, and folks like Tim Ferriss often cite it as a model for developing a dedicated following.  On a smaller scale, working towards a dedicating podcast following has the potential to accomplish much the same thing in a way that's more difficult to achieve with traditional social media, which can be more superficial and ADHDish. Stay tuned for more on this subject in the future, as well as a live guests on the podcasts! Lastly, Kelly St. Clare was kind enough to host an upcoming rafflecopter giveaway for The Thirteenth Hour on her site.  Stay tuned for more info in the coming days. ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞  Signup for the mailing list for a free special edition podcast and a demo copy of The Thirteenth Hour!
