Taking antibiotics can do short- and long-term damage to your gut health.Antibiotics might be considered a "necessary evil," because while they are critical for killing harmful bacteria, they also kill beneficial bacteria -- resulting in other undesirable side effects. Fortunately, there's a way to restore the good bacteria balance: probiotics. It's important to look for a probiotic product that performs clinical research on how many live cultures make an impact on one's health. It's also essential to "feed" good bacteria and allow them thrive by eating plenty of plant fibers (vegetables, fruits). Desiree Nielsen, BSc, RD, joins Andrea and Lisa to explain why probiotics are imperative for overall health and particularly useful as a way to combat the side effects of antibiotics, as well as which strains of probiotics do what.
Heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) has many potential causes.Dr. Edward Taylor, general surgeon, explains GERD causes, symptoms, and when to see your doctor.
The color, shape, size, and frequency of your bowel movements may provide clues about how healthy (or unhealthy) you are."Poop" is often a taboo topic, but the truth is, it's a critically important biological function which should be talked about. Dr. Sheth joins Dr. Friedman to discuss what indicators characterize healthy and unhealthy stools, what a "normal" schedule is, why you shouldn't necessarily panic if you see blood, and how you can improve your overall health by changes to your diet.

Get tested to determine your specific wheat sensitivity. The mainstream medicine view of gluten sensitivity was one of "you have it or you don't."However, recent studies have shown that there is a spectrum of gluten sensitivity. You can be sensitive without having celiac disease. An allergy prompts an immediate anaphylactic reaction, like swelling, itching or difficulty breathing. The histamines in the body cause this reaction. Those with celiac suffer an inflammatory condition of the gut when gluten crosses the gut barrier. Digestive issues follow. There’s more to wheat than just gluten, and gluten has many variants. Testing is available to determine one’s specific intolerance or allergy. Listen as Dr. Mark Engelman joins Dr. Susanne Bennett to discuss the complexity of wheat sensitivity.

Two elements are important for "feeding" your gut bacteria for better health.Overall health starts in the gut. That's why it's so important to support the integrity of the gut wall. These elements are important for "feeding" your gut bacteria for better health:L-glutamine. Amino acid that drives gut cell metabolism, building, and repair. Naturally occurring in animal protein. Not found in a lot of plant foods, but it is in cabbage. If supplementing, powder is the best option.Probiotics & Prebiotics. Aids in gut health and healthy digestion. Can be consumed via fermented foods or supplementation (kimchi, sauerkraut, miso, tempeh, kefir, etc.).Listen as Desiree Nielsen, BSc, RD, discusses gut health, including how poor gut health manifests as other health conditions such as fatigue or arthritis. Desiree also shares information on leaky gut syndrome and how to address it and other gut-based conditions.
Aloe vera has a number of health benefits, both for your internal health and external health.Aloe vera has a number of health benefits, both for your internal health and external health.Digestion issues is one of the top reasons individuals enlist the help of aloe vera, due to its ability to balance out the pH in your gut, but it can also provide detoxifying benefits and antioxidant support. On the outside, aloe can be beneficial to your skin, whether you're treating a burn or using it in an aloe-based skincare product. Kim McClure of Lily of the Desert joins host Lisa Davis to discuss aloe's healing benefits, as well as the development of the company's skincare line (and other products).
In order for your body to properly digest wheat or gluten from other grains, you need to repair your digestive system. Many individuals experience negative effects from eating foods that contain wheat (gluten) or dairy, including digestive distress, rashes or hives, and brain fog.Why would you eat something that makes you feel bad? While you may temporarily solve those issues by removing the suspected problem food, you haven't really addressed the root cause. Dr. John Douillard, author of Eat Wheat: A Scientific and Clinically-Proven Approach to Safely Bringing Wheat and Dairy Back Into Your Diet, explains that a breakdown in digestion has damaged the intestinal wall and leaked undigested foods and environmental toxins (i.e. pesticides, herbicides) into the body’s lymphatic system, causing “grain brain” symptoms and food allergies. In order for your body to properly digest wheat or gluten from other grains, you need to repair your digestive system. Dr. Douillard suggests the following approaches:Liver and gallbladder: improve your bile flow by eating red beets, artichokes, leafy greens, turmeric and fenugreek. Upper digestion. The five spices of ginger, cumin, coriander, fennel and cardamom. The key is to eat whole wheat in its natural state, as opposed to refined wheat products, which do cause negative health effects. Remember, any food in a processed version is a poison.Listen in as Dr. Douillard joins hosts Andrea and Lisa to explain why wheat is not the enemy, as well as provide tips for restoring the health of your gut and allowing for healthy consumption of gluten and other typically problematic foods.
Learn how the low-FODMAP diet works and why it can be beneficial for your child or teen.Your gut health is integral to overall health. Unfortunately, many adults have lost the core concepts of how to be nutritionally sound, and they're also unable to teach their children healthy eating habits. Because of lapses in nutrition and other evolving factors surrounding certain foods (i.e. wheat), the instances of IBS, Crohn's disease and other digestive distress have risen in the child and teen populations.Rachel Meltzer Warren, MS, RD, believes that's why it's important to give teens the proper foundation now, so they can switch this trend for the future.Rachel's new book, A Teen's Guide to Gut Health, utilizes the Low-FODMAP diet, which isn't really a "diet" in the traditional sense (nor a fad). Rather, this diet is an elimination and reintroduction plan of certain foods containing short-chain carbohydrates which many individuals find hard to digest. The low-FODMAP diet is not meant to be a lifetime plan; instead, it's a way to identify which foods are causing digestive issues. How does it work? For 2-6 weeks, cut back on all of the classes of foods that contain these short-chain carbohydrates. Then, one by one, reintroduce classes to test out how your body tolerates them. Some individuals can tolerate one class but not another; sometimes it depends on the amount. Essentially, low-FODMAP is a tool for finding out what your body tolerance is and discovering which classes of carbs are problematic. The tricky part is that the foods are not overly obvious. A new app has a frequently updated database of foods, which include onions, garlic, apples, avocados, beans, and wheat. During the 2-6 week test period, find some go-to meals without those staples that you can rotate through.Once you've identified the foods that bother you, you can continue with the diet in a modified fashion; learning to live with what you've discovered along the way.Listen in as Rachel joins hosts Andrea and Lisa to discuss the low-FODMAP diet, as well as why legitimizing kids' and teens' digestive health problems is so important, especially in the school environment.
With all of the many probiotic products out here, how can you choose one that actually works?Your "intestinal flora" represents all bacteria, both good and bad, naturally found in your intestinal tract. Together, these bacteria form a complex ecosystem that plays a major role in maintaining both your gut health and your overall health. When intestinal flora is unbalanced, the so-called “bad” bacteria take over, which can lead to illness, infections, digestive issues, fatigue, depression, etc.In competing with bad bacteria (pathogens), probiotics help boost the amount of good bacteria throughout the intestinal tract, thereby contributing to the maintenance of a balanced intestinal flora. With all of the many probiotic products out here, how can you choose one that actually works?Desiree Nielsen, BSc, RD, joins host Lisa Davis to explain the essentials of an effective probiotic, such as being manufactured in a way that preserves the viability of strains.Desiree also shares information on the new product from BioK+ (the company she works closely with), Bio-Kidz, which is a kid-friendly probiotic.
Fermented foods contain probiotics, but is that enough to keep your gut healthy?Fermented foods are any foods that have been transformed by microbial means. This process also preserves the food to a degree.Fermented foods may contain beneficial enzymes, B vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, and various strains of probiotics.Probiotics are essential for a healthy gut microbiome, and aid in digestion and immunity. Some research is linking the reduction of anxiety to use of probiotics. It would be difficult to fulfill your probiotic needs by only eating fermented foods.Probiotic supplements can provide a higher "dose" of the healthy bacteria your gut needs to function properly. Each probiotic strain acts uniquely and individually to help reduce the overflow of bad bacteria.Listen in as Desiree Nielsen, BSc, RD, joins Andrea and Lisa to explain the difference between fermented foods and probiotic strains, as well as why it's important to incorporate probiotics into your daily regimen.
Constipation can be unbearably uncomfortable. Try natural solutions instead of hitting the pharmacy. Constipation can be unbearably uncomfortable. Instead of turning to OTC solutions, Carol Alt suggests using food and nutrients to address symptoms. For instance, raw fats lubricate your system and help move foods through the intestine. Probiotics are also very important. Those healthy bacteria are crucial for healthy digestion.Another tip is to not drink water while you're eating, because it dilutes important enzymes that are beneficial for digestive health. You can also supplement with digestive enzymes if you're not a fan of a raw diet.Other digestive issues, such as heartburn or GERD, can disrupt digestion if you're treating those symptoms with acid blockers.Listen in as Carol joins host Lisa Davis to share her tips for curing your constipation.
Probiotics can help heal your gut, but you need to go about your probiotic regimen the right way.So many individuals today suffer from digestive issues, including constipation, bloating, diarrhea, IBS... and the list goes on.Drug manufacturers have made millions off the suffering of these individuals, but oftentimes the remedies only address the symptoms, not the cause: poor gut health. If you neglect the bacteria in your gut, of course you're going to have issues. Probiotics can help heal your gut, but you need to go about your probiotic regimen the right way.Colloidal silver, aloe juice, and fermented greens, can all help the probiotics "implant" in your gut so they can live and grow. Carol Alt joins hosts Andrea and Lisa to share more about the proper way to get your probiotics, as well as the health benefits of eating raw food over cooked food.
Do you have irritable bowel syndrome? You probably know someone with irritable bowel syndrome, since it's become very common. Or, you may be that person.IBS is exacerbated by stress. Try some stress reduction techniques to minimize the reaction. If self care doesn't help, it's time to play detective and see what's causing your digestive issues. You need to work with your doctor to decode the symptoms. A food intolerance or candida may be to blame for your issues. Certain foods may trigger your IBS. It may take some trial and error to find the source of your issues.Listen in as Dr. Stephen Wangen discusses how to know if you have IBS and what's causing the problem.
Find out what's making you bloated so you can look and feel better.Bloating is caused by excessive air in the digestive tract. It looks terrible and feels dreadful. The female digestive tract is different from the male digestive tract. Women have an extra 10 cm of colon, giving more room for bloating. Men have higher testosterone levels, giving them an extra layer of protection from bloating.Processed soy, artificial sweeteners, dairy, gluten, alcohol and sugar are worth examining in your diet. Allergies and a compromised ability to digest these things can cause bloating. You may need to reduce or eliminate these items from your diet.Do you snack before bed? Your stomach has a bedtime. Don't consume most of your calories after dark, because your stomach is sleepy. Eating after the sun goes down can bloat you.Listen in as Dr. Robynne Chutkan shares how to stop that bloating.
Find a diet that works for your personal digestive troubles.Everyone has diet advice. When you’re facing IBS, your helpful friends and family certainly have suggestions that may or may not be of use. Many people with IBS have already tried dieting to alleviate symptoms. Unfortunately, there is no one-diet-fits-all to help with IBS.You try to eat healthy, but your body has problems digesting good foods. Your body simply isn't breaking down your food. You can give your body some help in the digestive process. Try eating soup. Cut up your food into smaller pieces. Cook your food so it's a bit softer and easier to digest. Learn the foods that give you trouble.Listen in as Dr. Stephen Wangen discusses diet and IBS.
You have trillions of bacteria living in your gut, and they are not just passive riders. You have trillions of bacteria living in your gut and they are not just passive riders. While many people understand that probiotics are beneficial bacteria, they may not quite understand why they are beneficial. The gut has a strong role to play in immunity: as a barrier and as the site of a large volume of immune tissues/activity. Gut bacteria actively participate in this immune activity... helping to send "messages" that down regulate inflammation in the gut, improving barrier function and fostering a gut environment that antagonizes potentially harmful bacteria.Probiotic bacteria also influence the nervous system in the gut and produce molecules such as short-chain fatty acids that have systemic effects.Research is making new discoveries every day, and while we are a long ways off of definitive answers, we are now more aware than ever that bacteria help influence overall health.Listen in as Desiree Nielsen, BSc, RD, joins host Lisa Davis to explain why probiotics are so essential for optimal health, as well as the best types of probiotic strains to incorporate into your everyday regimen.

Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is a condition that occurs when the pancreas fails to provide the necessary amount of digestive enzymes.Your pancreas produces enzymes to help with the digestion of food. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is a condition that occurs when the pancreas fails to provide the necessary amount of digestive enzymes. Due to a lack of these enzymes, people with EPI cannot properly digest the nutrients in food such as fats, proteins, and carbohydrates (maldigestion). You might experience symptoms like bloating, gas, pain, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation. Because these symptoms are similar to IBS, your doctor might have a difficult time properly diagnosing your condition. However, if you are properly diagnosed with EPI, there is a lot you can do to help manage the symptoms. For instance, you can alter the way you eat and the types of foods you eat, such as eating more frequent meals with less volume. It's important not to over-stuff your system and to balance out protein, fat and carbohydrates. Joy Bauer, RD, MS, joins host Lisa Davis to share more about EPI, including the guide she created to help people navigate the condition (Living with EPI: A Nutrition Guide).

Exercise can help those with IBS feel better, physically and mentally. When you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) you may feel like your activity level is restricted. You certainly don't want to do anything to exacerbate the condition. Many IBS sufferers find that regular physical activity is helpful for their symptoms. It reduces stress and can assist with digestive issues. It also improves overall fitness and stamina.Gentle exertion should be plenty for IBS sufferers to get benefits. You might consider yoga, Pilates or walking. Low-impact workouts are great for getting the heart pumping.Listen in as Dr. Stephen Wangen discusses exercise and its benefits for IBS sufferers.
Learn some simple tips for alleviating acid reflux, without turning to harmful medications. If you're suffering from acid indigestion, heartburn, or acid reflux, you may have turned to OTC or prescription medicines to help ease the burning pain. These medications work to lower the amount of acid in your stomach. The problem is, you need acid in your stomach. Acid plays a crucial role in killing off pathogens and bad bugs. Not having enough could lead to issues like bone fractures, pneumonia, and kidney disease.According to Carolyn Harrington, Certified Holistic Health Practitioner, there are better ways to reduce heartburn symptoms. One tip is to stop eating aggravating foods. While foods like tomato sauce and citrus fruits are often blamed, wheat, gluten and dairy can actually be the most problematic. Avoiding foods that give your gut grief may be enough to allow digestion to get back on track. It's also important to keep your gut flora healthy by eating fermented foods, taking probiotic, and staying away from sugar, which angers the bad bacteria.Carolyn advises eating smaller meals, drinking a lot of water, and incorporating aloe vera juice into your daily regimen.Listen in as Carolyn joins hosts Andrea and Lisa to share more simple tips for alleviating acid reflux, without turning to harmful medications.
Learn what to watch for in autistic individuals when digestive problems are present.Gastrointestinal problems seem prevalent in those with autism, but it can be tough to get those issues treated. Autistic individuals present differently from the general population. Limited vocabulary can prevent clear communication of physical complaints. Trying to physically communicate the symptoms can be mistaken as behavior problems. And, the diversity in autism can complicate a doctor's ability to diagnose the digestive issues.Listen in as Kristin Gonzalez, President of the Autism Hope Alliance, shares what to watch for in autistic individuals when digestive problems are present.

Have you found blood in the toilet? Maybe on your toilet tissue? Is this something to worry about?Hemorrhoids are veins in the rectum or anus that have become swollen and painful. There are 2 types of hemorrhoids: those that are just inside the anus or lower rectum (internal) and those that are outside the opening to the anus (external). You can have both at the same time. Internal hemorrhoids usually don't cause pain or discomfort, while external hemorrhoids often do.Erik Branstetter, DO is here to give you advice for when it's time to see a doctor and how to deal with hemorrhoids.
Listen in as Dr. Mike provides the answers to a wealth of health and wellness questions. Here you'll find the answers to a wealth of health and wellness questions posed by Healthy Talk fans.Listen in because what you know helps ensure healthy choices you can live with. Today on Healthy Talk, you wanted to know:For the past 10 years I've had tremors and it's getting worse. The tremors only happen when I'm signing my name. When I move around, they are okay, and when I'm at rest they are okay. My father also developed tremors at the young age of 60. He died at 97 without being diagnosed with Parkinson's.Unfortunately, nobody knows what causes an essential tremor. They usually begin around age 40, starting on one side of the body and progressing to both sides of the body.Dr. Mike suggests doing a high dose of vitamin B12 and vitamin C shots. He also suggests phosphatidylserine.Do you recommend fecal transplantation for a cure of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth? Is this procedure safe?Fecal transplantation has some science and validity to it, so it's not as crazy as it sounds. However, Dr, Mike is always cautious when using the word "cure." With that being said, it may help. You should find a doctor to look into it with you. There was just a new study that looked at the possibility of Alzheimer's disease being a fungal disease. What's your take on this? What causes Alzheimer's in multifactoral. The amyloid plaques that form in your brain if you have Alzheimer's is not the cause, it is the result and the symptom. This idea that Alzheimer's could be fungal or bacterial is not a crazy idea, and there needs to be more research on this.If you have a health question or concern, Dr. Mike encourages you to write him at askdrmikesmith@radiomd.com or call in, toll-free, to the LIVE radio show (1.844.305.7800) so he can provide you with support and helpful advice.

Listen in as Dr. Mike provides the answers to a wealth of health and wellness questions. Here you'll find the answers to a wealth of health and wellness questions posed by Healthy Talk fans.Listen in because what you know helps ensure healthy choices you can live with. Today on Healthy Talk, you wanted to know:Hello Dr. Mike, I have a confusion about the use of digestive enzymes. I've heard on your show that taking certain supplements can block certain digestive enzymes to slow the absorption of sugar. My son is on a gluten-reduced diet and occasionally takes a digestive enzyme to aid in the breakdown of gluten. However, I've also heard mention of the importance of blocking this enzyme. I can assume that the need to block or increase the absorption of protein, sugar, etc., is specific to certain health conditions. Can you help me understand when digestive enzymes should be supplemented or restricted?Dr. Mike can see how this can be a little confusing. Some shows and doctors might discuss the importance of digestive enzymes. However, there also are times when doctors might talk about blocking digestive enzymes, so it can seem like there is a contradiction. However, it depends on the situation the doctor is talking about. In a perfect situation, where you're not worrying about other health conditions, you want to supplement with digestive enzymes. Supplementing with digestive enzymes is the norm and in most cases what you want to do.The only time doctors might talk about restricting digestive enzymes is usually in the context of weight and weight management. This is when you want to block sugar or fat digestive enzymes.Dr. Blaylock is against dietary intake of high glutamine foods, saying that they are excitotoxins. The problem is, most foods that are considered healthy are high in glutamine (such as meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, beans). It's to the point where someone can name any food and I could give you several reasons why you shouldn't eat it. I use a couple of scoops of whey protein in my morning shake. What are your views on dietary glutamine as a neuroexcitotoxin?Glutamine is an amino acid that plays an important role in your body, and you need it to function optimally. The glutamine in foods is good for you and glutamine in itself is not an excitoxin. What happens is it converts inside nerve and brain cells to glutamate, which is a neurotoxin. A major source or glutamate is glutamine from the food you eat. The problem is, you might build up too much of it from the food you eat, as well as the protein supplements you take. This causes it to accumulate in the brain, and that's when it's bad for you.Dr. Mike's suggestion is to not avoid glutamine foods, but rather counter the potential build up of glutamate of those foods with other foods and nutrients known to calm down the brain. Spices and foods like saffron, omega and coconut oil, wild green oat extract, gaba, green tea, lemon balm, and passion fruit will all be beneficial in doing this.If you have a health question or concern, Dr. Mike encourages you to write him at askdrmikesmith@radiomd.com or call in, toll-free, to the LIVE radio show (1.844.305.7800) so he can provide you with support and helpful advice.
Did you know that you can take aloe internally for benefits such as improved digestive health and reduced toxins?Aloe vera isn't just for treating your sunburn. In fact, it can be taken internally to improve digestive health (especially for addressing acid reflux), support your immune system, reduce harmful toxins, increase nutrient absorption and soothe occasional muscle and joint discomfort.Acid reflux is a problem for many individuals, and our fast food, processed food society doesn't help much. Pharmaceutical and OTC acid reducers work to eliminate acid reflux, but they can have unwanted side effects, including destroying and blocking the necessary acid in your stomach.Aloe balances your stomach acid naturally and doesn't inhibit your natural digestive acid. It brings your digestive pH back into balance.Another benefit is that when taken orally, aloe can coat your esophagus and start to heal it.Listen in as Jack Brown of Lily of the Desert joins hosts Andrea Donsky and Lisa Davis to share more about the benefits of aloe, both externally and internally.
Heartburn occurs when your esophageal sphincter is weakened and allows stomach acid to flow backwards up into your esophagus, which can cause extreme discomfort behind your breastbone and inside your throat. If you've ever experienced heartburn, you know how uncomfortable and painful it can be. You might be tempted to reach for an antacid, but what if there was a way to combat your heartburn without having to depend on pharmaceuticals? Here are five natural ways to fight your heartburn: Eat Paleo. Take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar prior to meals. Do not drink fluids around meal time. Take digestive enzymes at the beginning of every meal. Take betaine HCL at the beginning of meals. Holly Lucille, ND, RN, joins Melanie Cole, MS, to discuss the five ways you can fight your heartburn without using pharmaceuticals.
Acid reflux disease affects roughly 20% of the US population and causes extreme heartburn and regurgitation, and other complications with the esophagus and other parts of the body. While medication can temporarily deal with symptoms and pain, the TIF procedure is a revolutionary way to deal with the root cause of the issue. Due to the unique approach of the TIF procedure, patients typically experience less discomfort, faster recovery and fewer adverse effects. Most patients are able to return to work and normal activities within a few days after their TIF procedure. The TIF procedure, using the EsophyX device, reconstructs the antireflux valve at the entrance from the esophagus into the stomach. This valve opens and closes as food is swallowed and is a physical barrier to reflux. By preventing reflux, TIF eliminates both the acidic symptoms of reflux such as heartburn and sore throat as well as the non-acid symptoms such as asthma, chronic cough and regurgitation.Dr. Medhat Fanous is here today to further explain the TIF procedure.

There has been a lot of recent buzz surrounding probiotics, but do you really know what you're buying and consuming?Probiotics have gained popularity over the past few years, with manufacturers -- and even some doctors -- touting their numerous health benefits. If you're strolling through your grocery store, certain food groups may pop out at you with large colorful print saying, "contains probiotics." You might even see several advertisements throughout the day, urging you to buy probiotics. However, with all the recent buzz surrounding probiotics do you really know the truth about them?True probiotics are a form of good bacteria found in supplements and foods. Most known for aiding in digestive health (constipation, upset stomach, diarrhea, cramping), probiotics also support immune function and help your body better absorb nutrients. With so many probiotics on the market, do you know what do you look for on the label to ensure the probiotic is safe and effective?Food labels can be tricky, especially when there are long lists of unfamiliar (or unpronounceable) ingredients. If you are reading a probiotic label and there are six or more microorganisms, it is probably imported from another country.Unfortunately, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved any regulations on probiotics that are imported from other counties and that could be containing foreign and unhealthy ingredients. It is also important to know the exact name of the probiotic, which will include the strain and species of the probiotic. You want to know the health benefits and the exact shelf life of these strains before ingesting them. What are the next steps the FDA and USDA will take to help educate the public about consuming safe probiotics?Author, Researcher and Founder/President of Natren Probiotics, Natasha Trenev, joins Melanie Cole, MS, to discuss why probiotics have gained popularity, what you need to know and look for in a true probiotic, and the next steps the FDA, USDA and manufacturing companies need to take to ensure the quality of a true probiotic on the market.
