Steve Domin, Founder & CEO of Duffel, the company rebuilding the infrastructure layer of the global travel industry.Duffel is taking on one of the most complex and outdated sectors, creating modern, developer-first APIs for flights, hotels, and more. Backed by investors including Index Ventures and Benchmark, the company has raised over $50M to transform how travel is bought and sold.Steve shares the journey of building Duffel from scratch, including: Why the travel industry is fundamentally broken The insight that led to Duffel's API-first approach Building deep supply-side integrations with airlines and incumbents Navigating COVID when travel demand dropped to zero The painful reality of scaling, resetting, and rebuilding product-market fit Where long-term defensibility comes from in complex infrastructure businesses We also explore: What makes companies like GoCardless “talent factories” How AI is changing how modern engineering teams are built The future of smaller, highly efficient companies Steve's view on the next generation of AI-native products This is a masterclass in persistence, infrastructure thinking, and building through uncertainty.
Still technically only a "few" weeks late, Sam and Adrian look back on 2025 and forward to 2026. This episode was delayed due to the Seven Summits series, but as we move into the new year, there's lots to talk about, from personal experiences in 2025 and goals for 2026 to the industry as a whole. - Adrian had a big year, with his 10th summit of Everest and the acquisition of Alpenglow Expeditions by Milky Way Park. Meanwhile, Sam started and finished his year on separate ski trips to Japan, but the highlight of the year was his growing family. - From expected films to impacts of tariffs, 2026 is sure to bring lots of interesting twists and turns. Andrzej Bargiel and Jim Morrison both broke the ceiling of 8,000m peak ski mountaineering, and expected films are potentially coming in 2026. On the other end of the industry, the ski industry may continue to see the direct effects of tariffs and other economic impacts. As we look forward to 2026, we want to thank our listeners for their continued support and encourage you to share feedback. Comment or message us what you like and what you don't like. Andrew Duffel is the president of Florida Atlantic University's Research Park, based in Boca Raton. Born and raised in the UK, Duffel relocated to the US post-graduation and has been residing there ever since. His expat journey is brimming with unique experiences. One particular aspect of this forms the crux of this podcast episode - discussing an often-neglected financial aspect of expat life, that several British expats are bound to face in the near future. In a detailed exchange, Andrew shared his experiences about moving to the US in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. He reminisces about how travel, once celebrated for its simplicity, has since become something of an ordeal. Life in the US introduced Andrew to a cultural melting pot, Florida, where about 60% of the population originates from other states or countries. As a British expat in such a culturally diverse state, he relished this acceptance, rivalling any presumed notions of the region being conservative or unwelcoming. This account serves as a pertinent reminder that being an expat encompasses a gamut of experiences. From the joys of exploring a new city to the trepidations of dealing with unfamiliar policy changes, these stories embody resilience, growth, and most importantly, the human spirit of adventure.Always an Expat is affiliated with Plan First Wealth LLC, an SEC registered investment advisor.
The Twenty Minute VC: Venture Capital | Startup Funding | The Pitch
Ophelia Brown is the Founder of Blossom Capital, one of Europe's newest but leading early-stage venture firms. Ophelia and the Blossom team have invested in stand-outs including Checkout, Duffel, Tines, and Moonpay. Prior to Blossom, Ophelia was a GP at LocalGlobe and a Principal at Index Ventures where her investments included Robinhood and Typeform. In Today's Episode with Ophelia Brown We Discuss: 1.) From Restaurant-Owning DJ to Leading European VC: How Ophelia made her way into the world of venture and came to found Blossom? What does Ophelia know now that she wishes she had known when she entered venture? What does Ophelia feel she is running away from? 2.) Venture Capital: The Market: Why does Ophelia believe the best venture firms focus either by stage/theme/geography? Why does Ophelia believe that marketing in venture has no substance? How can founders determine between what is real and what is false? Why does Ophelia believe that growth investors have ruined the venture market? When does Ophelia believe VCs will realise that FOMO investing is not a good strategy? 3.) Ophelia Brown: The Investor and Fund Manager: What has been Ophelia's biggest investing mistake? How did it change her mindset and approach? In a world where everyone does seed investing, why does Ophelia not? How was raising the first Blossom fund? What were some of her biggest lessons? Why does Ophelia believe that follow-on investing can damage returns? How does Ophelia reflect on her own relationship to price? When has she paid up and it worked? When has she paid up and it not worked? Does Ophelia think it is fair that many find her curt and abrasive to work with? 4.) Europe: Is Now Really The Right Time? What would Ophelia like to see change in the way European VCs act? If Ophelia could invest in one seed firm, one Series A firm and one growth firm in Europe, what would they be? Why? What are 1-2 of the biggest barriers Europe must overcome in the next 5 years?

Zum Unternehmensportfolio gehören u.a. Api.video, Aurelia, Cado, Castor, Checkout.com, Collective, Dija, Duffel, Fat Llama, Freshly, Frontify, Inne, Localyze, Micro. If your a skateboarder then you know of Corey's incredible career that has spanned over the last 20 years. His style and grace on the board is as important as it is off the board. He gave his generation of skateboarding a true sense of fashion, culture and purpose. One of the many things I admire, and have for many years, about Corey is his youthful approach to virtually everything he does. It comes out in his personality and especially in his work. As of recently, Corey has launched his own skateboard brand called "Adored". It is his love-letter(s) to skateboarding and all things that inspire him. It was a true honor and privilege to speak with the Duff Man about skateboarding, music, life, cartoons and everything else in-between! Truly a sweet guy.
