¡Ah! On this week's episode: KHOL's Dante Filpula Ankney and Jenna McMurtry hit the polls to talk to voters in both Wilson and Jackson about what was on their minds as they cast their ballots. Those voters include: Marge Glick, Alex Coosaia, Anne Jones, Karyn Chin, Rachel Miller, Keith Cozzens, Milli Dawson, Margaret Gordon and Annette Robertson. KHOL's Emily Cohen attended two election watch parties in Jackson. At the Teton County Democratic Party's event at the Wort Hotel we hear from Maggie Hunt, Clare Stumpf and commissioner elects Natalia Macker and Len Carlman. At the Teton County Republican Party's event at Sidewinders we hear from Cornelius Kingsley, Ray Espinoza and John Farrell. Wyoming Public Radio's Nicky Ouellet reports some Wyomingites, especially those with the political action committee Wyoming Election Integrity, have been pushing for ballots to be hand counted. She spoke with Campbell County Clerk Cindy Lovelace who hosted the group for a test trial to estimate the time, cost and manpower. Lastly, emotions tend to run high during election season spanning political lines and into each and every home. Those emotions, often more than reason, determine our decision-making, including how we vote. KGNU's Susan Moran spoke with University of Colorado Boulder psychology professor Leaf Van Boven about exactly that. Welcome to the seventieth episode of the Lessons from the Cockpit podcast. This one is going to be a little different.   For a long time I've contemplated doing TWO podcasts; the current Lessons from the Cockpit on aviation and another called On the Nation's DIME, looking at current events around the world analysed using The DIME. DIME is an acronymn for Diplomatic, Informational, Military and Economic... the elements of national power our government uses to analyse how powerful or weak a nation state or organization is absed on those four elements. Our government also uses the DIME as a format for creating operations and plans called Flexible Deterrent Options or FDOs to stop potential conflicts from happening or begin movement of troops and material to a region if and when war seems likely. This episode takes a look at current events in North Korea, Russia and Ukraine and potential flexible deterrent options to keep from going to war. This episode of the Lessons from the Cockpit podcast is financially supported by the ook Tanker Pilot: Lessons from the Cockpit found in all four formats on Amazon: hardback, softback, kindle, and audile. The softack version has the pictures in color and kindle and audible have a extra file which downloads with the 32 pictures. Aircraft involved in many of the Flexibble Deterrent Options are available at Wall Pilot, custom aviation art for the walls of your home, office, or hanger. These very detailed aircraft profile illustrations are printed in four, six, and eight foot long prints on vinyl you can peel off and stick to any flat surface. Wall Pilot also creates custom aircraft profiles with your name, unit emlems, tail codes, and weapons loads in the same sizes. These prints are so detailed the AIM-9 Sidewinders have the stenciling and arming T-Handles on the missiles. Go to Wall Pilot and order one or two prints for your walls as this keeps the podcast funded. US Air Force bombbers showing up in your region sends a very clear message to our potential adversaries, particularly when teamed with other nations airpower. This B-1B Lancer is from the 77th Weapons Squadron, part of the US Air Force Weapons School at Nellis AF Nevada. Low observable aircraft like the F-117 deployed to South Korea when Kim il Sung died in 1994 as a deterrent to his son Kim Jung il burying his Dad in Soeul. The F-117s flew missions in and around the Korean Peninsula for three weeks in the summer of 1994. The F-22 Raptor is the best, ar none, air superiority fighter in the world. A squadron of Raptors showing up in your area can e a big deterrent to our adversaries. This F-22 Raptor is from the Hawaii Air National Guard.  Lockheed F-35s from the 388th Fighter Wing at Hill AF Utah are now flying missions in the Middle East, and one of their tasks is defending our Reaper drones from the Russian Air Force SU-27s and Iranian F-4 Phantoms. This F-35 is from the 34th Fighter Squadron "Rude Rams", the first F-35 unit to deploy to the Middle East region. A few years ago at Boskone, I had the chance to meet author Robert Redick to talk about his book “Master Assassins.” Well, he's back with a sequel, “Sidewinders,” which hits bookstores on July 6 and in e-book format.   “Sidewinders” continues the story of the Hinjuman brothers, Kandri and Mektu. The story takes place in a lethal desert twice the size of the Sahara, and features giant man-eating spiders, nomadic shape-shifters, and carnivorous plants—all while the magical servants of the tyrant they have wronged chase at their heels.   Robert and I go into the worldbuilding from the first book and how he continued it in the sequel. We talk about the fantasy genre and its struggles with misogyny and how this has improved in recent years. Robert has gotten to travel quite a bit and we look at the places he has been and how it's influenced the book.

SF #119: LMPD Gets Body Cams; "Sidewinders" Play Deconstructs Gender; Syphilis on Rise Among Gay Men

Strange Fruit

Play Episode Listen Later May 16, 2015 29:30

Once nearly eradicated in the United States, syphilis is back on the rise - mostly among gay and bisexual men. Rates reached an all-time low in 2000, and of the roughly 6,000 cases, only around 7% were among gay men; it was a concern almost exclusively for straight people. But better treatments for HIV lead to complacency about safe sex, perhaps especially among younger men who didn't witness the AIDS crisis of the 1980s first-hand. Now, men who have sex with men (known in medical research as MSMs) account for a full 91% of all national cases. And those nationwide numbers are reflected at home. In Louisville, rates jumped from 13.2 per 100,000 residents in 2009 to 27.7 in 100,000 - well above the national average of 18. Statewide, reported syphilis infections have almost doubled since 2009. To help explain why this is happening, and what can help, we talk this week with Dr. Kraig Humbaugh, Deputy Director of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services. Dr. Humbaugh explains how exactly the disease is transmitted, and how you can protect yourself and your partners. Syphilis is treated with penicillin, and responds well to treatment - but you have to know you have it. Check the end of this post for list of testing places is below (some are free or have sliding-scale fees). Also this week, we talk to playwright and friend-to-the-show Basil Kreimendahl, whose absurdist play "Sidewinders" runs in Louisville through May 23rd, produced by Looking for Lilith Theatre Company. Kreimendahl says she set the play on a frontier in the American West to evoke a lawless place where people made their own rules - much like people are making their own rules today about gender identity. "It's just sort of about being a human being, and about naming things," she says. "You know there's a lot of power in naming things and having a name for who and what you are, and it sort of explores, what if there isn't a word for what you are that fits perfectly? How does that affect you?" "Sidewinders" runs through May 23rd at OPEN. (Full Disclosure: Our producer Laura Ellis is in the cast, and joins us in this segment to talk about her character and work on the play) In our Juicy Fruit segment, we talk about First Lady Michelle Obama's commencement speech at Tuskegee University in which she described how the public's perception of her as First Lady was colored by race and racism. Remember the "terrorist fist jab?" The New Yorker cover showing her with an afro and machine gun? "Obama's baby mama?" FLOTUS name-checked them all, and talked about the doubts they raised in her mind. "I had a lot of sleepless nights," she said, "worrying about what people thought of me, wondering if I might be hurting my husband’s chances of winning his election, fearing how my girls would feel if they found out what some people were saying about their mom." Obama also laid out the can't-win situation black women face today, especially in the public eye. "Was I too loud, or too angry, or too emasculating? Or was I too soft, too much of a mom, not enough of a career woman?" The whole speech is worth a read (transcript here). And the LMPD is rolled out their plan to put body cameras on their officers this week. WFPL's Jacob Ryan joins us with the details. Usually, guests come on the show to celebrate their marketing successes, but Tucson's Mike Feder is in a different situation. General manager of the team for three seasons, the Tucson Padres, have left town for El Paso, and after 30 years in the business, Feder is now turning his attention to working for the Arizona Diamondbacks as a liason to the southern part of the state. Feder discusses the reasons why the AAA Padres team moved three years prior from the city of Portland, Oregon and now have gone to El Paso for what may be a successful market transfer. Feder discusses the highs and lows of operating the franchise in the city of Tucson, an area with a new distinction as the largest population without a professional team. Feder also mentions a key caveat to the Padres' move to El Paso as the Chihuahuas, as their new stadium hasn't been finished, meaning that the Chihuahuas will play against the Reno Aces in Tucson to open the 2014 season. Both the Aces and Chihuahuas have the distinction of being franchises which formerly called Tucson home, if there wasn't enough added intrigue enough to the story. Twitter: @MikeFeder

Japan’s Black Vinyl Junky shares a selection of his favourite “rare-grooves”—16 extremely rare, storied, and obscure tracks. It’s a master class in Japanese funk collecting and a treat for people interested in finally hearing the likes of Mike Taylor, Marvin Whoremonger, and the Sidewinders. We follow Black Vinyl Junky with some jazz, disco, bossa, and mpb, which is to say the regular Waxing Deep mix-up.
