New episode up now! We watched the 2020 film The Kid Detective starring Adam Brody and wow—everyone in this movie needs therapy. We discuss the clear themes of trauma and depression that thread throughout, love the use of cinematography and music to aid the storytelling, are surprised by how dark the movie gets, and talk about the expectations vs reality of both Abe Applebaum and the town of Willowbrook. Is Abe actually a good detective or is he just somewhat observant, good at psychology, and watched too many detective shows? We also get into the odd nostalgia of the film's flashbacks, where it's not quite clear what time period the “kid” detective grew up in but stylistically it could vary between the 1950s and the 1980s and we ponder on what that might mean. Katy is tired of movies showing depressed men peeing, Carrie admits to watching black and white films, Maddy enjoys smooth jazz, and Mack shows off his bottle cap collection. We argue about bathroom mirror placement, get anxious about hiding in closets, and wonder - why are Gen Z teens so into Pong? We also talk about cute gang names, young Vincent Price, and the nutritional aspects of ice cream. Give it a listen and you'll hear some delightful tunes as well! TW: Statutory rape, teen pregnancy, racism, depression SHOW NOTES/CORRECTIONS: Katy was incorrect in her remembrance of the crazy sword fight; it was between Basil Rathbone and Danny Kaye, not Vincent Price and Danny Kaye. Still worth watching though as Danny Kaye is a wild man with no training which made Rathbone nervous: Here! What Katy thought was a podcast with John Hodgman is actually a TV show called Dicktown which is on FXX but it is about a former kid detective solving crimes in a small town. Keep It! Podcast with guest Adam Brody Here is a link to The Solve It Squad show website Mack mentioned The book Katy was thinking of is Meddling Kids: A Novel by Edgar Cantero. Goodreads link

The show can also be found on Stitcher here.   Feedback The Maze at Windermere (Sibyl from Insiders) Strange Practice (Sara M from Insiders)   Questions 1. I’m looking for a wintertime book that is atmospheric and immersive that will make me feel the harshness of winter and want to cuddle up with my book and hot chocolate. I’m not looking for something heartwarming, just something reflective of the cold weather and set during Christmastime if possible. The only book I can think of that is similar to the reading experience I’m thinking of is The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey. Thanks! --Kathleen   2. Just want to say I love the podcast and also love “All The Books!” too and listen to both religiously. My to-read list has now exploded exponentially so thanks. So much so that I’m considering taking a less interesting but better paid job just to fund my girlfriend’s and my reading and library building obsession. After a brief year or so hiatus from reading, my now girlfriend got me back into reading in a big way. I’m hoping to find a book for her for Christmas (or whenever) to inspire her in return. Her favourite books are: The Magicians Trilogy by Lev Grossman, World War Z – Max Brooks Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman And (of course): Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban She also really likes the look of quirky horror books like Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero and is really into books with realistic female portrayal and which aren’t washed with male only lead characters. Other than that she’s hoping to write a thesis on apocalyptic fiction, so obviously she loves that too! Thank you in advance! --Henry   3. I am looking for a book for my father in law and my father in law's partner. My father in law likes inspirational books that can also be applied to business. His partner is kind of a Cowboy, I was thinking of a book about the outdoors or a contemporary book about cowboys. If you could help I would greatly appreciate it, especially for the cowboy. --Gene   4. I am starting to look for book gifts for the holidays and need help finding a book for one friend in particular. She really loves jigsaw puzzles, so I'm wondering if there are any books you've enjoyed that include a female character who loves jigsaw puzzles. Something like The Friday Night Knitting Club but for puzzlers maybe? Does such a thing exist? Thanks! --Jeanne   5. I am a newish listener. I discovered the book riot podcasts this summer and I have been loving them. Recently I have been making my way through your archives. I love listening to your recommendations and always secretly hope to hear books I also recommend or have at least read. Finally my request. I have been meaning to do this request ever since I started listening to your podcast. If this is too tight of a deadline, I could always use your recommendations for next Christmas. As you might have guessed I am obsessed with books. I love sharing what I am reading or hearing about what others are reading. Christmas is a great time to share this passion. My dad and my twin niece and nephew are the ones that I have a request for. Dad: A lot of my conversations with my parents are around the books we are reading. My mom is part of a book club but I feel through the years my dad and I have sort have started our own informal book club. One of the times my dad visited me he borrowed one of my many bookmarks and wrote a recommendation list on the back, some of those books were "Trinity" Leon Uris, "Sometimes a Great Notion" Ken Kesey, "Dune" Frank Herbert, "Steppenwolf" by Herman Hesse, and "Bean Trees" by Barbara Kingsolver. One of our favourite authors is Richard Wagamese and we both admire Wab Kinew but my dad struggled with his memoir. He enjoys books that spark conversation and he has an interest in First Nations as he is living in an area that is dominantly First Nations (hence Richard Wagamese and Wab Kinew) but he is also interested in other topical issues. He has read Naomi Klein (found it a bit dense), The Best Laid Plans Terry Fallis andI got him Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari once for Christmas (he read it but had to take breaks). This year my dad is turning 70 (on Christmas) and I am getting him Richard Wagamese's final book but I am hoping through this jumbled paragraph that you might have another recommendation. The twins: The not as long list. My niece and nephew are 6 turning 7 late January. They are still at an age where I feel comfortable buying books instead of giving them gift cards for books. Last year for their birthday I gave them Iggy Peck, Architect and Rosie Revere, Engineer. They loved both these books. They love story time and interacting with the books (asking questions, making observations, telling stories). I was wondering if you had any other books along this vein with kids being creative and building or being artistic. My nephew likes to draw and has a vivid imagination. My niece likes to ask deep questions. Thank you for your amazing show --Jennifer   6. Hi I’m looking for some help, choosing a Christmas present for my Mum. She loves Patricia Briggs and Kelley Armstrong and has also really enjoyed Carrie Vaughn, Ben Aaronavitch, Kim Harrison and Rachel Vincent. Illona Andrews, Melissa Marr, Jim Butcher, Holly Black and Karen Chance got a meh reaction. JR ward and Laurel Hamilton are a no go (too much sex before you get any plot) Over the last decade I’ve also covered Cassandra Clare, Sarah J Maas, Charlaine Harris, Lilith St Crow, Rachel Caine, Julie Kagawa and Richelle mead to varying degrees of success. She has just spent August devouring Seanan McGuire’s Toby Daye series and has moved on to the Cryptozoology set for the autumn. In order to pay her back for introducing me to Anne MacCaffrey when I was 12 I’m looking for something that may have slipped under the radar that she will enjoy. Bonus if there are lots of back catalogue for the author. Thanks for your previous excellent recommendations for my Vegas trip. Fingers crossed you can help me find some new reads for my Mum. --Bex   7. I am looking for recommendations on what I call low urban fantasy. Stories where wizards and golems and all manner of weird things exist in the contemporary world, but rather than being a separate secret world with large-scale organizations, they exist in isolation and largely in secret on the fringes of society. The magic isn't some separate, arcane practice, but rather comes from or integrates everyday practices like poker or watching TV. The wonders themselves tend to be less spectacular and more like fudging reality a bit. The protagonists tend to be morally grey and less than savory. I've only found a couple of works that have scratched this particular itch (the work of Tim Powers, the roleplaying game Unknown Armies), and I would really appreciate any suggestions you could give. I would really like any suggestions that incorporate history into the magic (e.g. the death of Bugsy Siegel as an arcane ritual in Powers' Last Call). Also, books that do not feature straight white guys as the protagonist would be a nice change of pace. Thanks! --Alex   Books Discussed Gunsmoke & Glamour by Hillary Monahan The Voyage Out by Virginia Woolf Two Old Women by Velma Wallis Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield (tw: suicide, domestic violence, harm to children) Fledgling by Octavia E Butler (tw: pedophilia, sort of) Severance by Ling Ma Essentialism by Greg McKeown The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt The Death Safe by Edgar Wallace The Pattern in the Carpet by Margaret Drabble Grace for Gus by Harry Bliss Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice Touched by an Alien by Gini Koch Borderline (The Arcadia Project #1) by Mishell Baker (tw: suicide, self-harm) Half-Resurrection Blues by Daniel José Older Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge by Paul Krueger "Low fantasy" post

On the August, 2018 Word By Word: Conversations With Writers, host, Gil Mansergh welcomes the Barcelona-born NY Times bestselling writer Edgar Cantero with his decidedly different new novel This Body’s Not Big Enough For the Both of Us. Edgar writes short stories, screenplays and novels in three languages (Spanish, Catalan, English) that often include women kissing, things exploding and multiple versions of the same event presented like deconstructed Hollywood gangster films from the 1940’s. This Body’s Not Big Enough for Both of Us features a unique individual as the hard-nosed private eye called A.Z. Kimrean. But having just one name is inaccurate. The personalities of two twins occupy the same body—Adrian is the male with a high I.Q. and photographic memory, while Zooey is the creative female who plays musical instruments, writes, paints and is a practicing nymphomaniac. During the show, Gil and Edgar chat about the San Francisco private eye genre, hermaphrodites, desert gangster lairs, nymphomania, wether or not eleven-year-old girls can be femme fatales, the impact velocity of an armor-plated Jaguar sedan, and the course of true love—all of which can be explored more completely in the pages of Edgar Cantero’s new novel.

For readers of a certain age and sensibility, Edgar Cantero‘s Meddling Kids will go down as easy as a bowl of sugar-coated cereal on a Saturday morning. In the summer of 1977, a group of Scooby-Doo-esque teen detectives—Andy, Peter, Kerri, Nate, trusty dog Sean—crack their biggest mystery yet, exposing the infamous Sleepy Lake monster for what it really is: a guy in a mask trying to get his hands on the treasures buried beneath old Deboën Mansion. But something doesn't sit right; thirteen years later, the so-called Blyton Summer Detective Club reforms to put to rest lingering doubts about the case. Lovecraftian horror, pop culture panache, and slapstick set pieces all figure into an animated romp about growing up, letting go, and the inherent dangers of the Necronomicon. During his recent tour to promote the paperback release of Meddling Kids, Cantero stopped by Boswell Book Company for an "in conversation" event with Milwaukee Record's Matt Wild. The two talked the genesis of the book, its "double-nostalgic" time period, how Scooby-Doo would have looked different if the gang had taken on human traffickers, and much more. A huge thanks to Cantero, Boswell's Daniel Goldin, and everyone who came out for the talk. Amanda and Jenn discuss Asian sci-fi, books about mental illness, starter graphic novels, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Goodbye, Vitamin by Rachel Khong and Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero.   Questions   1. I have never read a graphic novel but am excited to get into them. However I really am just not into fantasy or sci fi. Where should I start? Thank you! --Sara   2. Hi, I am looking for science fiction set in Asia by Asian writers for my bookclub and to read something in the vein of #ownvoices. I would prefer it not to be YA, but it is not a requirement. I tend to like science fiction with great characters over great science. --Sidsel   3. Hey Jenn and Amanda, I've been thinking and don't know how I missed this in my reading life. But some of my favorite movies are multi-generational female-lead stories that jump back and forth in their timelines. Examples are movies like Fried Green Tomatoes, How to Make an American Quilt, and Now and Then. Please help correct this 90's kid's need for some lady-friendships books. --Teenie   4. I recently read The Vegetarian and I found it absolutely incredible. I have made it a mission to try to read other translated books. What are some suggestions you have? Thanks --Ashley   5. Can you please recommend books with characters with mental illness? I recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and it really helps reading about characters that go through similar experiences. I read 'It's kind of a funny story' 'The rest of us just live here' and 'All the bright places'. I enjoy YA, but I would like to read other genres as well. (I usually like my books as diverse as possible) Thank you for your help! --Theodora   6. You two seem to know a lot about diversity in fiction so I figured I'd ask you two instead of taking my question to google (I figure you both will offer me better quality recs). So I'm a big reader of fantasy. It's always been my favorite, and preferred reading genre. However I'm also a gay man who enjoys reading about gay men (preferably if a romance is involved), so to find that I've pretty much had to go outside the fantasy genre for that one. I'd love it if I could read a (quality) fantasy novel with gay characters, and maybe a little bit of romance. I'm so excited to hear what you two have to recommend, this is my favorite podcast, and I've read so many amazing books because of you two. --Sam   7. I'm trying to get into post apocalyptic books, but don't know where to start. I recently read Station 11, and now I want more. There seems to be no shortage of YA post apocalyptic novels, but I've read several, and so far have not liked any of the ones I have read. I've never NOT liked YA, but I've never been too crazy about it either, so I figure I better look at 'adult' (I'M SO SORRY. I DON'T LIKE CALLING IT THAT EITHER) books of the genre. Thanks so much you two! I can't wait to hear what you two have to recommend. --Chloe   8. I am a sucker for sad books, especially those that revolve around loneliness. The History of Love, Everything I Never Told You, and Oryx and Crake (is that an odd third?) were all fantastically devastating for me. I am looking for recommendations that will send me to that despairing place in the company of the fictional. --Sasha   Books Discussed   The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. by Neal Stephenson and Nicole Galland Isaac’s Storm by Erik Larson March, Book 1 by John Lewis This One Summer by Mariko Tamaki and Jillian Tamaki Invisible Planets, edited by Ken Liu The Sea Is Ours, edited by Jaymee Goh and Joyce Chng The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan Mama Day by Gloria Naylor Penance by Kanae Minato, translated by Philip Gabriel The Queue by Basma Abdel Aziz, translated by Elisabeth Jaquette Haldol and Hyacinths by Melody Moezzi Hyperbole and a Half by Allie Brosh Captive Prince by CS Pacat Amberlough by Lara Elena Donnelly The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker Borne by Jeff VanderMeer Shelter by Jung Yun A Girl is a Half-Formed Thing by Eimear McBride
