We are hitting the dog days of summer and headed to the homestretch of My Favorite Summer - and after talking about our favorite Actors a few weeks back, it's time to turn our attention to the much fairer side... our favorite Actresses! We invited our great friend of the show, the host of the Food for Thought Podcast and our resident Chef Melissa Reagan -- and we begin the show with a Top Ten list for our Rotten Tomatoes game, in what might be the longest DCMS game we've ever done... then we leap into our Top Ten All Time Fave Actresses. Amanda tries (and fails) to resist singing the hit single from 2009 by Owl City as we talk about the Lampyridae family of beetles. They have many names, all of them deceptive. They are not flies, they do not produce heat or lightning, and they are not worms, but they are very buggy. Tangents include the book/film adaptation Where'd You Go Bernadette, the Fey, and several other things that Producer Derek has forgotten because he had to cut so much (future bonus episode?) Hello Libration Nation! This week I'm joined by Haley Houghton, an educator and book enthusiast. The book we discuss is “Lessons in Chemistry” by Bonnie Garmus. For our drink we chose coffee (this was recorded in the morning and as busy moms we weren't quite ready to get at it), and Haley added a little chemistry twist by making it in an Aeropress. In this episode we discuss turning 40, our two person only book-club, and the general bad-assery of Bonnie Garmus in writing the strong, quirky, brilliant female character Elizabeth Zott.Haley mentions this story is a tragicomedy, which is right on and there are some great read-alike out there if you want more like this book:Where'd You Go Bernadette by Maria SempleEleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail HoneymanThe Elegance of the Hedgehog* by Muriel Barbery*We did refer to this as The Elegance of the Porcupine which I think is a very cute and relatable mistake

In this week's episode, two major Twi-hards hop on the nostalgia train and discuss all things Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. From our early fangirl days to our recent Twilight renaissance, we dive into the series from start to finish. We are indeed “Super Massive” Twilight fans…mostly for nostalgia purposes, but also because the movies are terrible and yet amazing. We're both apparently very passionate about Twilight because we talked about for 1 1/2 hours. If you listen all the way to the end, you're a trooper! Books we mention in this episode: Where'd You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple, A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. There is a pop psychology theory about left brain and right brain dominance from the 1980s. Supposedly those with strong right brains are the analyzers and those with dominant left brains are the artists. In this scenario, it is a rare person who is lucky enough to have both sides of their brain work harmoniously; their logical and scientific right brain plays nicely with the creative and imaginative left brain. Our guest this week, debut novelist Christina Consolino would be one of those people. Christina grew up creating stories but also loved to read biographies of famous female scientists like the first female physicians in the United States; the Blackwell sisters. She loves to read fiction but decided to make a career in science by pursuing a PHD in physiology and teaching it at the college level. Like a lot of writers, the characters she created in her head wanted to come out; when they got louder, she knew it was time to embrace the life of a full-time author. Christina’s first book which came out in March is called Rewrite the Stars. It is the story of a military veteran’s PTSD and the havoc it has wrought on his marriage. The reader gets both his version of events, as well as those of his estranged wife, Sadie. Christina talks to us about how her experience as an editor gave her confidence to write her novel, what disease her veteran character originally had instead of PTSD through 3 drafts until she decided it just didn’t serve her story well, and what name she calls her favorite teaching skeleton. Books Mentioned in this Episode: 1- Rewrite the Stars by Christina Consolino 2- The Value Tales series 3- A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith 4- The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett 5- The Sisters Blackwell by Janice Nimura 6- Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare 7- The Fault in Our Stars by John Green 8- Washington Black by Esi Edugyan (audiobook) 9- So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo 10- She Wouldn't Change a Thing by Sarah Adlakha 11- Sophie's Choice by William Styron 12- How the Penguins Saved Veronica by Hazel Prior 13- A Polar Affair by Lloyd Spencer Davis 14- A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman 15- Where'd You Go Bernadette? by Maria Semple Online magazines mentioned-- Literary Mama Movies mentioned-- Write Before Christmas

Christina's first book which came out in March is called Rewrite the Stars. It is the story of a military veteran's PTSD and the havoc it has wrought on his marriage. The reader gets both his version of events, as well as those of his estranged wife, Sadie. Christina talks to us about how her experience as an editor gave her confidence to write her novel, what disease her veteran character originally had instead of PTSD through 3 drafts until she decided it just didn't serve her story well, and what name she calls her favorite teaching skeleton. Books Mentioned in this Episode: 1- Rewrite the Stars by Christina Consolino 2- The Value Tales series 3- A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith 4- The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett 5- The Sisters Blackwell by Janice Nimura 6- Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare 7- The Fault in Our Stars by John Green 8- Washington Black by Esi Edugyan (audiobook) 9- So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo 10- She Wouldn't Change a Thing by Sarah Adlakha 11- Sophie's Choice by William Styron 12- How the Penguins Saved Veronica by Hazel Prior 13- A Polar Affair by Lloyd Spencer Davis 14- A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman 15- Where'd You Go Bernadette? by Maria Semple Online magazines mentioned-- 1- Literary Mama Movies mentioned-- 1- Write Before Christmas

This week Joe and Suz discuss the unparalleled Kristen Wiig and her work in Wonder Woman 1984, Welcome to Me, and Where'd You Go Bernadette?
One week ago, we discussed Where'd You Go Bernadette on election day, and it was a wonderful distraction. Today we are discussing it's movie companion, by the same name, directed by Richard Linklater! We made a deal with a god we dont believe about our candidate winning (yay striking down fascism!), so unfortunately that means no more witty questions like: What do you get when you cross a filmmaker with a distinctly realistic aesthetic (almost to the point of absurdity) with a satirical, semi-commentary and absurd characters? The answer?Well you'll have to listen to us discuss Where'd You Go Bernadette directed by Richard Linklater to find out!

Then we react to the first reactions to 1917, as it enters the Oscar Race as a possible contender for one of the technical categories, and we quote some friends of the show for their superlatives. We continue to get conflicting information on the Feature Documentary category. Soooo…. what else is new? The Documentary Award nominations from the Producers Guild of America give us some of the usual nominees, and then a few surprises. We take a moment to enjoy the Clio Entertainment Awards winners to celebrate the best marketing campaigns on the year, and then we discuss the second trailer for Honey Boy. To close the episode, we’re all about our Make The Case segment. We confirm a case against Where’d You Go Bernadette, which dropped on VOD this past week. Mike 1 drags a few first reactions from Also Mike regarding Knives Out, and then we dive into Frozen II. We talk about the fandom, the themes, and some other heart warming implications this new blockbuster has had on the Thanksgiving box office. Then we each make the case for & against the film as a potential Oscars nominee, even though we both know it’s gonna be there. To complete the segment, we do a quick Snubbable vs Unsnubbable about the candidacy of “Into The Unknown,” and how polarized people are about the new song from Adele Dazeem herself. Let us know what you think about Frozen II or anything we talked about in this episode. We’re @MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. You can subscribe / rate / review / like / share / & listen to us on iTunes, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Google Play, Tune In, Spotify, and just about wherever you listen to podcasts. #84 Ready Or Not, Where’d You Go Bernadette, The Last Black Man In San Francisco This weeks’ roster of flicks are met with mixed feelings by both Ralf and Oscar. The Last Black Man In San Francisco is being received really well by critics and those who are nostalgic for childhood homes but not us. Bernadette has some good performances and charm but fails to justify the elongated first act and redemption at the end. Ready Or Not is a fun ride that doesn’t go beyond its premise and trailer when it could’ve easily provided some layers to go along with the mayhem. Garret S and Nicole discuss Where'd You Go Bernadette, our wildly divergent opinions on the movie, the comparison to the book, and the theme of re-finding your passion late in life and how it relates to the podcast we make. We discuss the juxtaposition of analog and digital creativity. Garret recommends Death of an Innocent, the original article that inspired Into the Wild, and Dead Poet's Society. Nicole recommends Madame Secretary. And both Garret and Nicole recommend finding your passion. Dazed and Confused, Boyhood, Before Sunset and beyond—it's hard to match Richard Linklater when it comes to movies basically about how we find our way through life. And probably a lot of us found our way with the help of Linklater's thoughtful, restless movies. His latest film Where'd You Go Bernadette adds another chapter to his work with the story of a woman rediscovering a creative self she left behind when she started a family. It's a terrific, nervy, and funny performance by Cate Blanchett, with a touching portrait of a mother-daughter relationship. So for our latest Film Comment talk at Film at Lincoln Center, we were extremely happy to feature Linklater alongside his producer Ginger Sledge. FC Editor-in-Chief Nicolas Rapold sat down with the two for a conversation on Bernadette and beyond.

We profile 7 more categories including Original Screenplay, Supporting Actor, Costume Design, Animated Feature, Makeup & Hairstyling, Cinematography, and Lead Actress. Frozen vs Toy Story, Pitt vs Dafoe, Erivo vs Mirren - there’s some great races to preview here. How the Midyear Oscars Report Works - Top of Show Structure of Category Breakdowns - 1:37 Original Screenplay Category - 2:15 Supporting Actor Category - 11:05 Costume Design Category - 20:26 Make-Up and Hairstyling Category - 26:14 Animated Feature Category - 32:14 Best Cinematography Category - 39:23 Best Actress Category - 48:59 Your Homework/Our Socials - 58:34 What’s Next From MMO/Words of Wisdom - 59:31 It’s part 2 of our Mid-Year Oscars Report! As we did in the first part, we break down another 7 categories at the Academy Awards, and we hit on all of the major contenders while doing so. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood remains center stage, but we also hype up some more contenders like Harriet, Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Little Women, 1917, Jojo Rabbit, The Last Thing He Wanted, The Laundromat, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, & many more. We also talk about some major stars along the way like Brad Pitt, our friend Willem Dafoe, Helen Mirren, Kristen Stewart, and of course, Quentin Tarantino. The episode format leads to some fun discussions. Toy Story 4 seems like its in a two picture race for Animated Feature with Frozen 2. CATS probably has good make-up, Downton Abbey may have some pretty damned good costumes, and Sam Mendes movies like 1917 probably have incredible cinematography. But on the flipside, we also think John Litgow will wear a well-made fat suit, Little Women is one of many period pieces where the dresses will be sewn with impeccable taste, and the Harriet set photos are stunning. So again, we preview each of these races with points & counterpoints, and with our picks for frontrunners, likely nominations, and wildcards. Stay tuned for Part 3, where we’ll finish the Mid-Year Report and build up to an overview of the Best Picture category. We’ll also have a major announcement about another new weekly show on the next MMOW. Hint, hint - it’s gonna be Oscar related. So we’ll have a lot to discuss in the coming months regarding this fast approaching awards season, and we’ll be doing a lot of what we do best - break down the Oscars! On that note, we’ll be doing many more Oscar Sprint Profile movie reviews. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood hits theaters next week, and we also plan on covering The Farewell, The Kitchen, Luce, Where’d You Go Bernadette, and The Goldfinch. And those are just the next flurry of contenders coming out through early September. There’s a whole bunch more for us to cover throughout the fall and winter leading into red carpet season. As always, we want to know how you see the race. When reality sucks, keep watching movies with us. We’re Mike, Mike, & Oscar!
