“Day by day, however, the machines are gaining ground upon us; day by day we are becoming more subservient to them; more men are daily bound down as slaves to tend them, more men are daily devoting the energies of their whole lives to the development of mechanical life. The upshot is simply a question of time, but that the time will come when the machines will hold the real supremacy over the world and its inhabitants”. Samuel Butler wrote those words in the mid-19th century in his essay Darwin Among the Machines (1863). The somewhat satirical essay calls for the total destruction of all machines to save humanity from inevitable subservience to them. Starting with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, science fiction writing often fixes upon the fear that machines will surpass us, replace us, and even enslave us. Terminator, Mass Effect, The Matrix, and Blade Runner all deal with this existential fear. Now that AI has arrived in a mass use format through ChatGPT and Gemini, lawmakers around the globe are rushing to regulate this technology to prevent abuse while still enabling innovation. The EU has jumped out ahead in trying to regulate artificial intelligence and is hoping that its regulatory power will help set global standards for AI use; but will it? To discuss this complex and serious topic, we invited Ian Bremmer, Founder and President of the Eurasia Group, and Anu Bradford Professor of Law at Columbia University and author of The Brussels Effect (2020), and Digital Empires: The Global Battle to Regulate Technology (2023). The Fremen fight to liberate themselves and their planet from Imperial control under the messianic leadership of Paul Atreides. Aspects of Bedouin culture and lifeways as well as episodes from Bedouin history, such as the effects of resource extraction on Bedouin landscapes and Bedouin participation in the Great Arab Revolt, heavily informed the novels' themes and narratives. This is my favorite book at the moment. My favorite lines so far Pg. 5 - animal consciousness does not extend beyond the given moment…animal pleasures remain close to sensation levels and avoid the perceptual Pg. 6 - focused consciousness by choice Pg. 12- hope clouds observation Pg. 39 - a good ruler has to learn his worlds language, that it's different for every world….the language you don't hear just with your ears Pg. 40 - the mystery of life isn't a problem to solve but a reality to experience. Pg. 84 - every experience carries it's lesson Pg. 92 - the proximity of a desirable thing tempts one to overindulgence Pg. 102 - the descriptions of Gurney on this page show exactly why I love this book dearly Pg. 112 - Paul held himself apart from the humor (this was my absolute favorite line in the entire book)

He who controls the spice controls the universe!'Dune' by Frank Herbert is a sci-fi classic that is comparable with some of the other amazing fictional universes. The story takes place on Arrakis, a barren planet scarce of water but containing the immensely valuable spice. House Atreides suffers a catastrophic betrayal and so the young Duke Paul undergoes a quest for revenge and to restore his rightful inheritance. I summarised the book as follows. "It's a fun world and I can see why it has fanatical supporters. I found it easier reading than LOTR but also noticed myself skipping the poetry & songs. It's great for night time reading and to lose myself in the story, but I probably won't bother to dive fully into the whole Dune universe."I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world.

Her main character faces an impossible choice throughout the novel which makes Lorraine the perfect person to join this episode's discussion.    All characters must at some point make decisions - there wouldn't be much plot in a book if they didn't. But what happens when you make all a character's choices equally bad? How does this trope vary across genres and why do we find it so compelling? Join Jules and Madeleine as they dig into the many ways an impossible choice can be used to drive a story. This month's guest is Graham Zimmerman. Graham is a professional alpinist, filmmaker, and staunch climate advocate. Through the past couple decades of traveling around the world, prioritizing climbing over everything else, the red flags and telltale signs of a changing environment shifted to the forefront of Graham's mind. He decided to ramp up his commitment to climbing—and the environment. Graham's approach to advocacy is rooted in the notion of being an “imperfect advocate.” He acknowledges that he, along with everyone else, is imperfect. But that doesn't stop him from doing whatever is in his power to raise awareness about our most pressing environmental issues. Graham has used his platforms strategically this year to educate, inform, and ultimately get people out there to vote in the election. Graham shares his experiences and knowledge to give us that gentle nudge to get engaged, imperfections and all. As an immigrant to Britain, he educates me on the concept of Third Culture Kids and how to make friends anywhere. Both Nav and I suffer from this and when you learn to say no and be protective of your time to truly deliver at a top level on just a few focused projects things get a whole lot better ONLY DO IT IF YOU LOVE IT To succeed in the arts you have to just love the art that you are doing, whether it is writing, painting or music. it shouldn’t be about fame or other things because that won’t come instantly and you won’t enjoy yourself. you will constantly be questioned and challenged by what you're doing and if you don’t love it you will give up. I really liked his example that a banker doesn’t have to get tested to see if he can be a banker every week, but as an artist, you are constantly auditioning to even be able to do your job. This leads nicely into another important point about HAVE THE RIGHT GOALS AND METRICS OF SUCCESS When the choir were in a big competition and put in loads of work and hours they had an awesome experience and massively grew the profile of the choir, every person involved gained new skills and they made beautiful music. yet because they didn’t win the competition they felt like failures. if you removed the bit where you mention your in a competition and just say that your going to be in TV to millions of people and be awesome that sounds great and hardly something to get depressed about. So before you do anything it is important to remind yourself what is the real value from what you are doing and what you want to get out of it before you chase the wrong goals. BONUS TIP - NOMINATE SOMEONE FOR AN AWARD Being nominated for a BCA was one of the best things that happened to him and also thoroughly deserving. Similarly, with a previous guest Lisa Forte who was nominated for top 100 women in Tech it's great when someone who really deserves recognition gets it. So I’m pretty sure we all must know someone in our community that deserves more recognition. So just nominate them. Whether it's for a BCA or Top person in Tech or any other award. If someone has been making your day brighter give back and give them a nomination. If they are doing great work already they’ll be able to do twice as much if you give them a little bit of help. When developing gratitude they say you should write more letters to people deserving, but going one step further and getting them a nice award is five times better and I”m sure you will feel fantastic if your favourite local hero gets an award because of you. I’m not looking for something heartwarming, just something reflective of the cold weather and set during Christmastime if possible. The only book I can think of that is similar to the reading experience I’m thinking of is The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey. Thanks! --Kathleen   2. Just want to say I love the podcast and also love “All The Books!” too and listen to both religiously. My to-read list has now exploded exponentially so thanks. So much so that I’m considering taking a less interesting but better paid job just to fund my girlfriend’s and my reading and library building obsession. After a brief year or so hiatus from reading, my now girlfriend got me back into reading in a big way. I’m hoping to find a book for her for Christmas (or whenever) to inspire her in return. Her favourite books are: The Magicians Trilogy by Lev Grossman, World War Z – Max Brooks Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman And (of course): Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban She also really likes the look of quirky horror books like Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero and is really into books with realistic female portrayal and which aren’t washed with male only lead characters. Other than that she’s hoping to write a thesis on apocalyptic fiction, so obviously she loves that too! Thank you in advance! --Henry   3. I am looking for a book for my father in law and my father in law's partner. My father in law likes inspirational books that can also be applied to business. His partner is kind of a Cowboy, I was thinking of a book about the outdoors or a contemporary book about cowboys. If you could help I would greatly appreciate it, especially for the cowboy. --Gene   4. I am starting to look for book gifts for the holidays and need help finding a book for one friend in particular. She really loves jigsaw puzzles, so I'm wondering if there are any books you've enjoyed that include a female character who loves jigsaw puzzles. Something like The Friday Night Knitting Club but for puzzlers maybe? Does such a thing exist? Thanks! --Jeanne   5. I am a newish listener. I discovered the book riot podcasts this summer and I have been loving them. Recently I have been making my way through your archives. I love listening to your recommendations and always secretly hope to hear books I also recommend or have at least read. Finally my request. I have been meaning to do this request ever since I started listening to your podcast. If this is too tight of a deadline, I could always use your recommendations for next Christmas. As you might have guessed I am obsessed with books. I love sharing what I am reading or hearing about what others are reading. Christmas is a great time to share this passion. My dad and my twin niece and nephew are the ones that I have a request for. Dad: A lot of my conversations with my parents are around the books we are reading. My mom is part of a book club but I feel through the years my dad and I have sort have started our own informal book club. One of the times my dad visited me he borrowed one of my many bookmarks and wrote a recommendation list on the back, some of those books were "Trinity" Leon Uris, "Sometimes a Great Notion" Ken Kesey, "Dune" Frank Herbert, "Steppenwolf" by Herman Hesse, and "Bean Trees" by Barbara Kingsolver. One of our favourite authors is Richard Wagamese and we both admire Wab Kinew but my dad struggled with his memoir. He enjoys books that spark conversation and he has an interest in First Nations as he is living in an area that is dominantly First Nations (hence Richard Wagamese and Wab Kinew) but he is also interested in other topical issues. He has read Naomi Klein (found it a bit dense), The Best Laid Plans Terry Fallis andI got him Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari once for Christmas (he read it but had to take breaks). This year my dad is turning 70 (on Christmas) and I am getting him Richard Wagamese's final book but I am hoping through this jumbled paragraph that you might have another recommendation. The twins: The not as long list. My niece and nephew are 6 turning 7 late January. They are still at an age where I feel comfortable buying books instead of giving them gift cards for books. Last year for their birthday I gave them Iggy Peck, Architect and Rosie Revere, Engineer. They loved both these books. They love story time and interacting with the books (asking questions, making observations, telling stories). I was wondering if you had any other books along this vein with kids being creative and building or being artistic. My nephew likes to draw and has a vivid imagination. My niece likes to ask deep questions. Thank you for your amazing show --Jennifer   6. Hi I’m looking for some help, choosing a Christmas present for my Mum. She loves Patricia Briggs and Kelley Armstrong and has also really enjoyed Carrie Vaughn, Ben Aaronavitch, Kim Harrison and Rachel Vincent. Illona Andrews, Melissa Marr, Jim Butcher, Holly Black and Karen Chance got a meh reaction. JR ward and Laurel Hamilton are a no go (too much sex before you get any plot) Over the last decade I’ve also covered Cassandra Clare, Sarah J Maas, Charlaine Harris, Lilith St Crow, Rachel Caine, Julie Kagawa and Richelle mead to varying degrees of success. She has just spent August devouring Seanan McGuire’s Toby Daye series and has moved on to the Cryptozoology set for the autumn. In order to pay her back for introducing me to Anne MacCaffrey when I was 12 I’m looking for something that may have slipped under the radar that she will enjoy. Bonus if there are lots of back catalogue for the author. Thanks for your previous excellent recommendations for my Vegas trip. Fingers crossed you can help me find some new reads for my Mum. --Bex   7. I am looking for recommendations on what I call low urban fantasy. Stories where wizards and golems and all manner of weird things exist in the contemporary world, but rather than being a separate secret world with large-scale organizations, they exist in isolation and largely in secret on the fringes of society. The magic isn't some separate, arcane practice, but rather comes from or integrates everyday practices like poker or watching TV. The wonders themselves tend to be less spectacular and more like fudging reality a bit. The protagonists tend to be morally grey and less than savory. I've only found a couple of works that have scratched this particular itch (the work of Tim Powers, the roleplaying game Unknown Armies), and I would really appreciate any suggestions you could give. I would really like any suggestions that incorporate history into the magic (e.g. the death of Bugsy Siegel as an arcane ritual in Powers' Last Call). Also, books that do not feature straight white guys as the protagonist would be a nice change of pace. Thanks! --Alex   Books Discussed Gunsmoke & Glamour by Hillary Monahan The Voyage Out by Virginia Woolf Two Old Women by Velma Wallis Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield (tw: suicide, domestic violence, harm to children) Fledgling by Octavia E Butler (tw: pedophilia, sort of) Severance by Ling Ma Essentialism by Greg McKeown The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt The Death Safe by Edgar Wallace The Pattern in the Carpet by Margaret Drabble Grace for Gus by Harry Bliss Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice Touched by an Alien by Gini Koch Borderline (The Arcadia Project #1) by Mishell Baker (tw: suicide, self-harm) Half-Resurrection Blues by Daniel José Older Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge by Paul Krueger "Low fantasy" post
