World Cup Group B PREDICTIONS
Since English fans first started singing “it's coming home”, it has never come home. In fact, football has only “come home” once ever, and that was way back in 1966. Since then, it has been poor officiating like in 1986 at the World Cup, hard luck like in 1998 and 2010 at the World Cup, and near misses like in 2018 at the World Cup and 2021 at the Euros. We could give all sorts of excuses for the lack of success at international competitions for more than half a century now, but they would hardly hold water because the simple fact is that the 3 Lions should actually be doing much better than they have been doing. And so many things could be blamed for these underwhelming outings; the FA, bad officiating, poor coaching, lack of zeal from the players, poor decision making on and off the pitch, lots of things. But what if the problem is actually with the country's local league – the Premier League? How could the Premier League be ruining the England national team, you ask? Well, come along with us.
If you're Mentally Tough you don't need to sleep you can simply push through… Wrong! The mentally tough person, as research suggests is more likely to deal with fatigue better than a mentally sensitive person however they do need to sleep. Being committed to your goals, making sacrifices, taking challenges head on and dealing with pressure requires a clear head, focus and perspective, as well as adequate rest and recovery. In this episode, I chat with Nick Littlehales, a well respected Sleep Coach to many elite sports performers. Nick goes on to share more on the topic of sleep, where he tells you about his experiences supporting Manchester United and Arsenal football clubs, as well as the England National Team. We also touch on other sports and the intricacies that need to be considered when you think of sleep and recovery. Key Learning Points: At Manchester United I was with the club and exploring myths and misunderstandings about sleep, where I looked to redefine their approach to recovery. Understanding your sleep chronotype is important. Focusing on circadian rhythms can be beneficial. Tracking and collecting data can be helpful but it can also cause anxiety and added stress. Napping is very helpful to remain fresh and focused, aiding your decision making and recovery. Consider your environment and think about light, dark and temperature exposure can improve your sleep quality. A message for parents, make sure your kids spend some time outside, away from the tech to improve their sleep quality. In this episode of the Yankee Football Podcast, Jack, Jake, and Connor unite for the first time ever, resulting in a level of football idiocy never before seen. Award-winning author Neil Humphreys discusses whether international football has lost its lustre and whether we should care about the England national team, despite their good World Cup run.
World Cup talk dominates the latest episode of the brilliant Allez Les Rouges podcast.Host Peter Hooton and regulars Kieth Culvin and John Nicolson discuss the Liverpool players currently representing their countries in Russia including Dejan Lovren, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah. The lads hope Salah will be rested for the final group game – and debate the lengths leaders and figures will go to use sport for political gain after Chechnya leader Ramzan Kadyrov made a beeline for the Reds hero at Egypt’s questionable choice of training base.Peter, Kieth and John were impressed by England in their opening match – and, unlike Martin Keown, particularly the performance produced by Jordan Henderson. That leads on to a fascinating and lengthy discussion about Liverpool supporters’ relationship with the national team.VAR, Emre Can, Jon Flanagan and Nail Fekir all get a mention before the focus turns to the Reds’ search for a goalkeeper – with a new target, who is in World Cup action, thrown into the mix. It’s another superb listen. The Football Hour was asked politely on Twitter @TheFootballHour (follow us now!) to do a podcast about how the England football team is so rubbish. Of Course we thought it would be a great idea. Players, managers, formations, the media, the fans, the FA & Wembley Stadium are just a few of the many things we discuss. When we talk (RANT) about England it always makes for a great listen, well, because they are so frustrating and this podcast is no different. If any issue is annoying you in football or there is a topic you want us to dedicate a podcast to, tweet us @TheFootballHour and we'll do a podcast about it. The England National Team has been remarkably un-boring over the last couple of weeks but in its stead comes one of the most stale manager appointments of recent times. We discuss Southgate for England, the Battle of the Slovs, the usual discussion on some of the worst performances of the week and we find out why Vardy took a bite out of Luis Suarez' wardrobe. In a week where our predictions of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s dismal failure and Liverpool’s meteoric rise to title contention look ropier Ryan Lochte’s Nobel Peace Prize chances, the team are back to vandalise the public bathroom that is football. Another of our predictions which is looking far from assured, is the imminent and dismal relegation of Hull City back to the Championship from whence they came. With no permanent manager, a threadbare squad and a number of important amateur voices in football writing them off it looked bleak for the Tigers. However, with two wins from two under their belt, including an opening day victory against the premier league champions, we ask: “Could Hull City ‘Do a Leicester’ and win the Premier League?” This week, the thinking man’s football pundit has used his phenomenal brain power to remember the email addresses and passwords for the most twitter accounts, and has thus won our talking point poll. He asks if the continuing professionalization of sports is making the playing field too level, and thus boring. Having survived for an extra week on the meagre scraps of the Premier League, at last we can once again feast on the buffet that is Serie A. I’ll be giving a brief round-up of the opening weekend, talking the race for the title and discussing some notable players who don’t play for Arsenal. Football punditry’s answer to a Walkman with a beard is back and he’s unsurprisingly doing his best to avoid talking about football. What’s not football and has loads of doping? The Olympics? Perfect! Paddy asks if Team GB’s funding model could be applied to improve the lacklustre fortunes of the England National Team. It’s also fallen on Paddy to come up with some slightly better organized fun this week so presumably we’ll be seeing who can name the most winners of the Norwegian Tippaleagen or something equally as cool and obscure. All this, and more besides in this week’s episode of A Team of John O’Sheas.
