It's not as clumsy or as random as a blaster. It's an elegant weapon for a more civilized -- yadda yadda. The iconic weapon of the Jedi Knight is certainly in the zeitgeist these days. In September, Darth Vader's screen-matched hero fighting lightsaber will go under hammer at Propstore Auctions, a first for any screen-used piece in this very special category. To herald its coming, David and Ryan are joined by the person who probably knows more about the lightsabers of the original trilogy than anyone, Lucasfilm expert and COO of Propstore Los Angeles, Brandon Alinger. In Part 1 of this long and chunky deep-dive Brandon takes the guys through all the lightsabers of Star Wars: A New Hope. Come into our dark cave of knowledge. Your weapons -- you will not need them. Cur·mudg·eon  [kərˈməj(ə)n]   noun           a bad-tempered person, especially an old one. We celebrate two legendary curmudgeons who brought the characters of Han Solo and Qui Gon Jinn to life: Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson. Both have been on the interview circuit lately, both have been looking back at their Star Wars careers, and both are sometimes grateful and sometimes salty about their experiences in a galaxy far, far away. We listen to recent interview highlights from the two to get their perspectives as now-older gentlemen. We report on fresh news about the casting of Matt Smith in STAR WARS: STARFIGHTER, shooting later this year, and we look forward to the 50th anniversary of STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE with news of a theatrical release happening in 2027. But what version will it be? Plus, listener feedback gets us looking at what and who are responsible for the Sequel Trilogy going “off the rails” and more!

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesWith the MCU's latest big screen offering now in theaters, as rabid fans, it only makes sense to look to the future, and apparently Marvel and Sony agree, as myriad fresh details surrounding the franchise's next film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day began hitting the internet all weekend. First, last Friday morning Sony released a 9-second video teasing features of Spidey's new suit, which was quickly followed up with a 23-second video with star Tom Holland, in suit, performing some minor acrobatics the next day. Finally, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the longstanding rumor that Mark Ruffalo is reprising his role as Bruce Banner/The Hulk for the film, while Better Call Saul actor, Michael Mando, was also announced to be returning as Mac Gargan/The Scorpion. The Fantastic Four: First Steps continued its box office reign, raking in $39.6 million its second weekend for a $368 million total global haul. While far from a defeat, the staggering 67% drop from the flick's first weekend presents a significant loss in momentum and is in stark contrast with expectations, which were largely fueled by positive reception and strong word of mouth among critics and fans. Elsewhere, Superman crossed the $550 million milestone internationally, and Jurassic World: Rebirth passed $750 million at the global box office after 5 weeks in theaters, becoming only the third film of 2025 to do so behind Lilo & Stitch and A Minecraft Movie. Amazon MGM's upcoming James Bond film being directed by Dune's Denis Villeneuve, is quickly coming together as Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has been hired to pen the script. Apart from Peaky Blinders, Knight has enjoyed a storied career on the small screen as a screenwriter, director and producer involved with projects such as Apple TV's See and Netflix's All The Light We Cannot See, while also co-creating Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? As far as big screen contributions, he wrote the screenplays for Eastern Promises and Spencer, which were both Oscars-nominated, and directed the films Hummingbird, Locke and Serenity, the 2019 film starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. Considering candidates for our new Bond, as if we could ever get enough of Tom Holland, the actor went on record to voice his reverence for the role as the “pinnacle” for British actors, while seemingly disqualifying himself by announcing another break from acting in 2027.Per Deadline, Matt Smith has joined the cast of Shawn Levy's Star Wars: Starfighter in a villain role, set to appear alongside Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth in the film set for May 28, 2027. The House of the Dragon star gets another shot at the Star Wars universe after previously being cast in The Rise of Skywalker but ultimately not appearing in the final film.John Krasinski announced he's returning to direct, write and produce A Quiet Place Part III, set for release on July 9, 2027; no cast or story details have been revealed.Disney and Lucasfilm announced Star Wars: A New Hope will return to theaters on April 30, 2027, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the film.Aaron Sorkin has his sights set on Oscar winner Mikey Madison and Emmy winner Jeremy Allen White to star in The Social Network Part II, with Madison potentially playing a whistleblower and White as journalist Jeff Horwitz behind the explosive Facebook Files exposé. While no formal offers have been made, sources say these are Sorkin's top choices for the sequel that will explore Facebook's role in various controversies rather than serving as a direct continuation of the 2010 film.

Somewhere around the mid-1970s, Hollywood studios realized that the summer months were the perfect launching point for their most-expensive, highest-profile projects. With kids out of school, families needed something to do. The prestigious Oscar-bait timeframe was half a year away. And people welcomed an opportunity to get out of the sun and into a dark, air-conditioned room to watch grown men get eaten by dinosaurs whilst using the toilet, and countless cars exploding for no discernible reason. Billions of dollars have been made by summer blockbusters, and even a few awards have ben won by them. Welcome to a new podcast series from the Holmes Movies Podcast titled: Fascism On Film! Each episode of this series, the Holmes Brothers look and review a film that has to do with fascism. During the episodes, the brothers look and see how the aspects and portrayal of fascism shown in the film relate to current and/or past events. On the first Fascism On Film episode Anders & Adam Holmes head back to a galaxy, far, far away to discuss Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and its Disney + prequel series Andor. Rogue One was released in 2016 and was a prequel to a New Hope. It showed how the Rebel Alliance stole the plans for the Death Star, which leads into the events of Star Wars: A New Hope. It stars an all star cast including Diego Luna who plays Cassian Andor. He would get his own series in the form of Andor which is set five years before the events of Rogue One. It looks at the origin story of Cassian and it shows what makes him the man we see in Rogue One. Andor also looks at the machinations and inner workings of the Galactic Empire and the beginnings and formation of the Rebel Alliance. It also has an all star cast which includes Stellan Skarsgård. Tony Gilroy who co-wrote Rogue One and oversaw reshoots on that film was the head writer and showrunner on Andor. A very grounded and realistic Star Wars show that tackles some very heavy themes. We hope you enjoy this episode and stay tuned for more episodes of this Fascism On Film series.

STAR WARS: How Much Would a DEATH STAR Actually COST?!?

Does It Fly?

“Now witness the power of this fully armed and operational battlestation!”Emperor Palpatine, shortly before nothing goes wrong for him whatsoever.Say it with us, “that's no moon…that's a space station.” One of the most quotable lines in the Star Wars saga actually tells you quite a bit about the central threat of the original film (now officially known as Episode IV: A New Hope but to anyone who grew up in the ‘80s or ‘90s, it will forever be known simply as Star Wars). The Death Star, the Empire's ultimate planet-destroying superweapon is the size of a small moon (or a large asteroid, as we'll get to in the episode) but is actually a mobile space station that can house and deploy thousands of troops, hundreds of small ships, and packs enough firepower to turn your home planet into multiple orders of space McNuggets. You'd probably assume that something like the Death Star would be completely out of the realm of scientific plausibility. And you might also make assumptions about the story logic or the vibes of the Death Star, especially since the entire Star Wars franchise essentially lives or dies by its vibes. Unlike, say, Star Trek (please don't make assumptions that we are biased simply because this is a Roddenberry production), which tries to lean heavily on the “science” part of science fiction, the Star Wars brand of sci-fi has always had a healthy dose of fantasy. Fortunately, we have Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi and Tamara Krinsky to explain how it all works for you…and also how much it might cost to actually build one of these things. We took a look at the entire history of the Death Star, from what we see in Episode IV, Return of the Jedi, the “Starkiller Base” evolution in The Force Awakens, and even the gritty military realism of Andor and Rogue One to find our answers, which might just surprise you.Don't believe us? (“That…is why you fail!”) Well, padawans, watch the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here and you might just be surprised at what we found!Watch the video version here:https://youtu.be/aE4vkGo-QfkSUGGESTED VIEWING Everything you really need to know about the Death Star (but were afraid to ask) is pretty much contained in Episode IV: A New Hope (we're still calling it Star Wars), Return of the Jedi, and the truly great Rogue One. But it's worth checking out The Force Awakens to see how the Death Star evolved into Starkiller Base. And while Rogue One prequel, Andor on Disney Plus has yet to tap into Death Star mythology…you really, really, really need to be watching that show. But Tamara also recommends the original The Making of Star Wars documentary which has some wonderful looks at how the movie magic of the Death Star was pulled off. Track it down!Tamara also points out a couple of classic war movies that were key inspirations for George Lucas for the assault on the Death Star: 1955's The Dam Busters and 1964's 633 Squadron.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do!MimasNo, not orange juice and prosecco! Saturn's seventh largest moon does look suspiciously like the Death Star, doesn't it? It's also about 1/10th the size of The Moon, which makes it much closer in actual size to the Death Star.Asteroid PsycheGiven the absurd cost it would take to actually build a Death Star, we're going to need to raise some capital. Fortunately, there's an asteroid in our solar system that may be composed entirely of materials “worth more than the entire world economy.”Dyson SpheresIn case you're wondering what it would take to power something like a Death Star, let's start with a Dyson Sphere, which could potentially channel the power of an entire sun. Hey, if you're looking to blow up a planet, do it right. Do they exist? Maybe! It Costs HOW Much?Never mind the price of steel and other building materials, get a load of how much firing a weapons grade laser costs. Now imagine that multiplied by how much it would take to destroy a planet! How Star Wars Almost Didn't Happen“I believe it was said at the time that no science fiction picture grossed more than $10 million dollars, and no picture with War in the title ever grossed more than six or seven million. So the idea of a sci-fi film with War in the title was a pretty deadly combination.”The article that Tamara quotes from can be found in full here, and it's full of fascinating info!Operation Plumbbob We can't explain it any better than the Atomic Heritage Foundation: “Operation Plumbbob was a series of 29 nuclear tests conducted by the U.S. military between May 28 and October 7, 1957, at the Nevada Test Site. It was one of the longest and most comprehensive test series in the continental United States, and became controversial after much of the operation was declassified. There were several objectives during Operation Plumbbob, including improving tactical weapon design, conducting bio-medical experiments, safety testing, and component and design testing for thermonuclear systems to be detonated in future operations.”They've got some pretty amazing videos of this as well.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?We've tackled Star Wars concepts before, so check out our episode on lightsabers right here! The new season of HBO's The Last of Us is currently giving everyone nightmares, so we told you why you maybe (?) shouldn't worry too much…for now.FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! QUOTE FOR REFLECTION“There is, then, a great gulf between the understanding that God accepts us because of our efforts and the understanding that God accepts us because of what Jesus has done. Religion operates on the principle ‘I obey—therefore I am accepted by God.' But the operating principle of the gospel is ‘I am accepted by God through what Christ has done—therefore I obey.' Two people living their lives on the basis of these two different principles may sit next to each other in the church pew. They both pray, give money generously and are loyal and faithful to their family and church, trying to live decent lives. However, they do so out of two radically different motivations, in two radically different spiritual identities, and the result is two radically different kinds of lives. The primary difference is that of motivation. In religion, we try to obey the divine standard out of fear. We believe that if we don't obey we are going to lose God's blessing in this world and the next. In the gospel, the motivation is one of gratitude for the blessing we have already received because of Christ. While the moralist is forced into obedience, motivated by fear of rejection, a Christian rushes into obedience, motivated by a desire to please and resemble the one who gave his life for us.”~Tim Keller, The Reason for God “I find your lack of faith—disturbing.”~Darth Vader, Star Wars: A New HopeSERMON PASSAGEHebrews 1:1-14 (ESV) 1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. 5 For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son;  today I have become your Father”?Or again, “I will be his Father,       and he will be my Son”?6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God's angels worship him.”7 In speaking of the angels he says, “He makes his angels spirits,          and his servants flames of fire.”8 But about the Son he says,  “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;  a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;    therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions    by anointing you with the oil of joy.”10 He also says, “In the beginning, Lord,  you laid the foundations of the earth,  and the heavens are the work of your hands.11 They will perish, but you remain;     they will all wear out like a garment.12 You will roll them up like a robe;     like a garment they will be changed.  But you remain the same,   and your years will never end.”13 To which of the angels did God ever say,“Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”?14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

Guest: Jason Kilar, former CEO & co-founder of Hulu and former CEO of WarnerMediaWhen Jason Kilar was a child, he was obsessed with Walt Disney — not just as a filmmaker or the creator of Disneyland, but as an entrepreneur. He started his career at the Walt Disney Company (where else?) but then got his first opportunity to help build something new when a young startup entrepreneur from Seattle visited his business school classroom. Most of Jason's classmates predicted the failure of this startup, Amazon.com, which elicited “this awesome laugh, the Jeff Bezos trademark laugh.” How a leader reacts to criticism or doubts, Jason learned, says a lot about their conviction and intelligence.Chapters:(01:08) - Bing Gordon and John Doerr (04:11) - Warner Bros.
