We crown our third ever Hall of Fame Guest as Eric Dunn joins the show for his annual appearance! We present him his HOF Plaque and he's pumped that he's able to get in the elite circle of guests. A lot is new in Eric's world, as he's been traveling to a good chunk of Jags road games…but there's one problem - they haven't won on the road at a game Eric's been to since 2019. What is wrong in Jacksonville, what's different about Trevor Lawrence's game, and how has new head coach Doug Pederson changed the culture? We go into Contenders & Pretenders for some heated discussions. Finally, we finish with Eric's charity work with Head On Youth Impact , raising money for children who will have to spend the holidays in the hospital. If you'd like to contribute, please head to https://www.headonyouthimpact.org/ - any donation is appreciated! We're proud to present Manscaped as our latest partner! This month on the 11th, three people spend several days just sitting in one place. Watching. Listening. A cemetery in Virginia… a cafe in New York… a plaza in Mexico… It's inspired by the book An Attempt At Exhausting A Place in Paris, by French author Georges Perec, who wrote that “nothing is happening all the time.” But what's happening when nothing is happening? Something is happening, right? Exhausting A Place is an appreciation of stillness, wandering minds, and the power of observation.Special thanks to Chioke I'Anson, Emily Spivack, and Eric V. Head over to manscaped.com/house, or use the code HOUSE at checkout for 20% off AND free shipping on your order. Just in time for Christmas, too! Episode 69 (nice) features one of the OG guests and now a two-time recurring feature on our show, Eric Dunn. Some knew him from Vine & Snapchat, but now many more know him for his podcast “Dunn & Drew” and the content he's been creating for the Jacksonville Jaguars. We discuss the NFL scene, the fate of the Jags, the future of Trevor Lawrence, and debate if the Detroit Lions will ever win a game. We also catch up on Eric's new ventures in content creation & what's next. At the beginning of our show, we break down our recent trip to the happiest place on earth: Tree House Brewing Company. It's been a while since we took the trip up to the shining beacon on a hill in Charlton, MA, but it was well-worth it. We review the new “Julius 4-Ways” mixed pack, which features four different versions of America's favorite beer, Julius. Will takes us through his thoughts on Julius Mango, and Jake has nothing but great things to say about Creamsicle, making an outrageous claim at the segment's end. To finish the show, we give our predictions on Thanksgiving Football spreads and over/unders, and build our perfect Thanksgiving plates. Thanks for listening! The Trump Administration’s trade war with China has highlighted the risks of both doing business in China and investing the Chinese companies which come to America to raise capital. Yet this has been a long-known and outstanding problem in the anti-corruption enforcement world. The 2014 bribery and corruption case of GlaxoSmithKline PLC (GSK), which resulted in a $490 million fine for the firm, resonated across the corporate globe. While many questions are still unanswered, one that seems to be at the forefront of the inquiry was where was the GSK Board of Directors? This matter demonstrates that the role of a Board of Directors is becoming more important and more of a critical part of any effective compliance program. In a NACD Directorship article, entitled “Corruption in China and Elsewhere Demands Board Oversight”, Eric V. Zwisler and Dean A. Yoost note, “Boards are ultimately responsible for risk oversight” any Board of a company with operations in China “needs to have a clear understanding of its duties and responsibilities under the FCPA and other international laws, such as the U.K. Bribery Act”. Why should China be on the radar of Boards? From 2010-2019, over 25% of all FCPA enforcement actions derived from China, that’s why. FCPA enforcement actions have made clear that numerous Chinese businesses have proven adept at appearing compliant while hiding unacceptable business practices. A Board should be aware that a well-crafted compliance program must be complemented with a thorough understanding of frontline business practices and constant auditing of actual practices, not just a paper compliance program. This means that both monitoring and auditing should be visible to the Board. Three key takeaways: China presents the highest FCPA risk and after GSK, domestic law corruption risk as well. Chinese companies have been adept at hiding corrupt business practices from their western owners. A Board must be cognizant of these risks and enhance their risk management process in China and other high-risk jurisdictions.

Michael #3: Open AI Jukebox via Dan Bader Listen to the songs under “Curated samples.” A neural net that generates music, including rudimentary singing, as raw audio in a variety of genres and artist styles. Code is available on github. Dataset: To train this model, we crawled the web to curate a new dataset of 1.2 million songs (600,000 of which are in English), paired with the corresponding lyrics and metadata from LyricWiki. The top-level transformer is trained on the task of predicting compressed audio tokens. We can provide additional information, such as the artist and genre for each song. Two advantages: first, it reduces the entropy of the audio prediction, so the model is able to achieve better quality in any particular style; second, at generation time, we are able to steer the model to generate in a style of our choosing. Brian #4: The Curious Case of Python's Context Manager Redowan Delowar, @rednafi A quick tour of context managers that goes deeper than most introducitons. Writing custom context managers with __init__, __enter__, __exit__. Using the decorator contextlib.contextmanager Then it gets even more fun Context managers as decorators Nesting contexts within one with statement. Combining context managers into new ones Examples Context managers for SQLAlchemy sessions Context managers for exception handling Persistent parameters across http requests Michael #5: nbstripout via Clément Robert In the latest episode, you praised NBDev for having a git hook that strips out notebook outputs. strip output from Jupyter and IPython notebooks Opens a notebook, strips its output, and writes the outputless version to the original file. Useful mainly as a git filter or pre-commit hook for users who don’t want to track output in VCS. This does mostly the same thing as the Clear All Output command in the notebook UI. Has a nice youtube tutorial right in the pypi listing Just do nbstripout --``install in a git repo! Brian #6: Write ups for The 2020 Python Language Summit Guido talked about this in episode 179 But these write-ups are excellent and really interesting. Should All Strings Become f-strings?, Eric V. During this episode, Eric and I will discuss how he builds supports and advocacy within the school district, and how this work impacts vulnerable families in Pasadena, California. We’ll also discuss the role mentors have played in his life, and his work as a Liaison for the DeVos Urban leadership Initiative. Eric V. Johnson has served urban youth for over 40 years as a pastor/director/educator. He currently serves as the Director of Partnerships & Collaborations for Stars, where he is responsible for building support and advocacy within the school district around systemic issues impacting vulnerable families in Pasadena, California. Born during the “Jim Crow era” in our country, he is the son of a law enforcement officer, who with his partners were part of a notoriously abusive culture with no accountability. As a result, he endured tremendous physical and emotional abuse at home and later became a victim of molestation. Through his mother’s intervention, the church became a refuge and at an early age committed his life to changing that culture. “Pastors and mentors reached out to me as a teenager dealing with abuse and molestation. They gave me hope and let me see my God-given value. Ever since then my passion was to give that same hope to others.” This passion fuels his collaborative work which includes, administrating a Summer School on behalf of the local school district and serving as the Southern California Liaison for the DeVos Urban Leadership Initiative. Eric’s other passion is writing scripts for film, TV, animation and comics with his partners in their trans-media company, Blaqueink. “I love storytelling!! I love how this medium can impact people in a way that no pulpit can. I have no doubt that if Jesus was walking the Earth today, his parables would have been films and TV!” He pastors a house church with his wonderful wife, Ana Maria that reaches out to others in the industry. Eric and Ana currently live in Arcadia. They have one daughter, Daniella, who is finishing her Masters program at USC in order to teach Special Needs students.

It's a 'Nobodies in Toronto' 2018 edition and as teased in the previous episode's teaser, myself and Open Topic Podcast host Eric V. are/were hitting the mean downtown streets of Toronto, and actually encountered very friendly and helpful people, as well as friendly drivers on the road, who helped us at least get to the subway stations so we could begin our historical underground journey. And even though it did not turn out like we had expected or hoped, it was still an interesting trip full of hazards and mishaps and near misses, but all in all a good starting point for what was the basis of comparing an established subway and street car system to the one being built (finally) here in Ottawa, Ontario. This podcast episode is supplemented by some videocast videos found both on the Nobodies Are Somebodies Podcast Facebook page and Facebook groups - if you wish to see more of our journey into the subway tunnels and around the downtown of Richmond Street East in Toronto. You can also see addition footage and dialogue by checking out Eric's Open Topic Podcast on the below link: Open Topic on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1VAoTPSp1Q&feature=share Music featured on this episode by Matthew Johnston, featuring his original song 'There Will be Peace' https://soundcloud.com/user-234321408
This episode of the podcast is a preview of what myself Chad Vice and Eric V. of Open Topic Podcast will be doing when we visit the big underground streets and tunnels of Toronto, Ontario, Canada coming up in November 2018, as it's the return of 'Nobodies in Toronto' but with a different take on this year's feature. Instead of featuring guests from the city, we are taking the time to go on an underground tour of the city's historical subway and street car tunnels as well as visiting the famous underground shopping mall. That and who knows what else, and it will be captured via various audio and video clips that will make up the following week's podcast, as well as video to be found on the Nobodies Are Somebodies Facebook page and the SebCamCo TV YouTube channel Eric gives us a preview of why he wants to do this feature, what inspired it, who he's talked to about it, and his growing interest in the political and structure of his home city, right here, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, the country's capital city! Eric V. of @OpenTPodcast actually listened to one of my podcast episodes, I can't believe it! Well maybe he heard I was discussing the news and he, being active in his community and interested in the goings on around the world, thought I might have something important to say. That was false, but he did hear a few things come up about the city we live in, the city of Ottawa, Canada, and specifically the area he dwells in...the dreaded downtown core. Right now, there is a big battle going on between the homeless shelters and the downtown business over who belongs where, and both have valid points. Eric asked for this time to speak and comment on his recent conversation and podcast episode with Rideau/Vanier counselor Mathieu Fleury and was even kind enough to pass on a question, or more like a question/statement I had about the condition of our city streets. You don't have to know Ottawa or even like it to enjoy this episode, I mean, no matter what, it's good conversation on a Monday evening, right? And I enjoy giving my guests a platform to speak, and invite all to do so and all of you awesome listeners to do the same! Want to hear Eric's episode on Open Topic Podcast with Counselor Fleury? This episode will be a simulcast episode with my friend Eric's show, the Open Topic Podcast. We combined our shows for one special Monday and basically interviewed each other. And we covered all the cool topics like war, religion, gay rights, codes of conduct on a podcast, and last but not least, my family. Hope you will enjoy this joint venture episode and be sure to listen to both our shows...do it at the same time!!
Not for the faint of heart or ears, this solo interview with Eric V. (I mean, without his wife) has definitely got a good story in here somewhere, but reads like a random thought blog on the life and times of Eric Villeneuve, the man behind his ECV Photography business. Eric discusses more of his family drama and dynamics in this 1st of 2 part episode, it was so much that we couldn't contain it all in just one. Originally it was just going to be a one-off episode for now, as he was late for a meeting with a client and had to leave the studio, so we couldn't talk for long; however, Eric reached out to me after the recording of the show and asked to come back the following week and finish it off. How could I say no to that? So we recorded this over a couple of weeks, and Eric's commentary and opinions are all his and as biting as ever. We talk about his family and his time living on the streets and in a men's shelter, at the tender age of 15! His time living in a men's shelter has Eric discussing a shocking incident that occurred that nearly ended his life and has forever changed him. All this and more than you can stand, it is time for Part 1 with Mr. ECV
Eric V. drops by the Nobodies Are Somebodies studio to check in and help me celebrate my 10th 'anniversary' of the podcast, among other things and we discuss his "love" of opening introductions to the podcast. Then, the featured show: my first ever recording, first time ever de d'ever recording on a podcasting format, on this past Christmas day 2016, so I traveled to my mom's place about an hour or so out of town. she was having a tough day, emotionally, not being with family during the holidays, so this was just a quick chat that turned into to an insightful an interesting conversation. We kind of go back and forth on the stories and the details as she is trying to remember situations from back in the late '50s to the late '70s, and some interesting tidbits come up. This is a real and raw conversation, warts and all, and here it is
Views from the Penthouse Suite Interview with Anja Smit Anja Smit, Library Director, Ultrecht University, The Netherlands is interviewed by Erin Gallagher Director of Collection Services for the Eric V. Hauser Memorial Library at Reed College and Matthew Ismail, Director of Collection Development, Central Michigan University in November 2016 in an "Against the Grain" Penthouse interview at the 2016 Charleston Conference in Charleston, South Carolina. Anja discusses her career and international work experience. The interview moves on to Anja’s concepts of “a library without a collection” and “a library without a catalog.” She notes that future libraries will add value by offering consulting services, not serving as a gateway to content. The library role in assessing information and in teaching information literacy is also highlighted. The conversation turns to the disconnect between how researchers work and how librarians view research. Anja notes the need for librarians to be more familiar with researcher workflows and stresses the need for discipline knowledge. Librarians acting as consultants and their role as emissaries for content providers are then discussed. They discuss impacts of open access on preservation and the library’s role in data management. The conversation then switches to how librarians can learn the new skills & competencies needed to add relevant value. This moves the discussion to library education with Anja noting there are no library schools in the Netherlands. There libraries are recruiting people with the new skills and competencies. The conversation continues exploring several topics including the European and US approaches to OA, global collaboration, standards & standardizing, and discovery. The interview ends on a light note as Anja is asked what she reads for fun. Extinctions in Near Time: Biodiversity Loss Since the Pleistocene
Hello again. Like I said before, I’m Mark Valentine and I’m going to be talking about Megafaunal Extinction and how it affects present and future biodiversity. Before I begin, you probably are going to want to know what exactly Megafauna are. Megafauna are HUGE animals. This would certainly include animals like elephants and giraffes, but also lions, tigers and bears. All these animals, however, are relatively well known and still exist in the world today. What many people don’t know is that there were many incredible Megafauna that existed a few thousand years ago that are now extinct. Around 50,000 years ago, at the end of the last Ice Age, Megafauna worldwide underwent massive and widespread extinctions . Before then, there were all kinds of amazing and enormous animals worldwide: In Eurasia, there were wooly mammoths and saber tooth cats, which you’ve probably heard of, but in North America there were beavers the size of small cars and 9 foot tall Bison with horns that spanned over 6 feet , in South America there were 5 foot tall armadillos and Giant Ground Sloths the size of elephants , and in Australia there were wombats the size of Hippopotamuses . All these animals have two things in common: One, that they are absolutely massive, and two, that they have all contributed to the historical phenomenon that Megafauna are more likely to go extinct than smaller animals . So what caused these extinctions? There are two causes. We know that human hunting lead to the extinction of many Megafaunal species, like Steller’s Sea Cow, which was basically a 30 feet long , 20,000 pound manatee . Another major cause of these extinctions was climate change. A recent study showed that climate change had significant effect on many species, and actually may have been the cause of extinction for wooly rhinos, giant bison, and other Megafauna . So what does this mean for present and future biodiversity? It’s not good. The same two factors—humans and climate—are again playing a role in Megafaunal extinctions. As humans increase in population and expand outwards, more and more animals are being threatened, and since Megafauna need more living space than other animals they are more affected. Animals including pandas and tigers are already endangered because of this. We’re also experiencing global climate shifts due to global warming, which is already causing a decline in Megafauna like the polar bear . The continued global trend of a loss of large animals is clearly leading towards one result: a world overrun with the smallest kinds of animals which can live alongside humans, or in other words, a world overrun with rodents . But this does not have to happen. If we as humans can dramatically change the way we live to reduce climate change and preserve wildlife, we can maintain biodiversity, especially among Megafauna, for much longer. The only question is, can we change? ``` Wikipedia contributors. "Quaternary extinction event." Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia. Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia, 20 Nov. 2011. Web. 30 Nov. 2011. On the next episode of DivaTalkRadio, we will be talking "wine" with Eric V. Orange, founder of www.LocalWineEvents.com. Eric will be discussing how to host a wine fundraisers and wine tasting dos & don'ts. Eric has had a diverse and distinguished 20+ year career within the wine industry. After an enlistment in the Submarine Service of the United States Navy, Eric joined an ex-shipmate who was attending the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park, New York. He took a job at Millbrook Vineyards outside of Poughkeepsie and spent almost five years learning to grow grapes and make wine as the Vineyard Supervisor. Eric moved back to his hometown to attend college and took a part time job at a 105 yr old private club which quickly became a full time position as the Bar Manager/Wine Steward. That job led to a position as a Wine Representative for a local Wholesaler, which in turn led to a position as District Manager for Paterno Imports in Colorado. During five and a half years with Paterno, Eric attained certification from theCourt of Master Sommeliers (1st phase) and a Master of Wine Education certification from the International Wine Guild. He is a member of the Society of Wine Educators. He also served on the board of the American Institute of Wine and Food (AIWF), Denver Chapter. Finally, he decided to develop his idea for LocalWineEvents.com. Eric and his family currently live just outside of Philadelphia.
